Ovestin,VA, prolapse and Litchen scoliosis
« on: February 08, 2014, 10:37:21 PM »

Hi, I have been to see a lovely uro/gynae last week for a second opinion. The first one last year said there was basically nothing wrong, just rather tight vagina and dry, looked abit sore made me feel like I was imagining it. So found this forum, researched who I hoped would be good for me. She specialises in prolapses, menopause, pelvic pain etc.

Well I have three prolapses, Litchen Scolosis  and VA. She is sending me to a specialist physio on Tuesday, for " point of release massage " and pelvic floor exercise, put me on a course of "Clobetasol" for the LS and Ovestin nightly for eight weeks and then reducing it to twice a week, I asked her if this would be a temporary treatment with the Ovestin and she said she felt I would be on it for life. She did a vaginal swab to check for any infections , as she said it is easy to overlook the obvious and did a transvaginal scan to check everything was fine.

She will do a biopsy also of the LS. I am feeling a little blue I guess as I have never been on the pill, smoked, no antibiotics for twenty plus years, exercise well, eat well and I feel I am falling at the first hurdle with taking the Ovestin, but the uncomfortable Urethra and general low key soreness is a bore.

She only does surgery if it's really necessary regards the prolapses, and never has and never will use mesh, so I feel confident with her, and her passing words to me where " just because one route doesn't work, it doesn't mean we don't keep trying until we find something that does"

My only slight worry is I have to use Ovestin nightly for eight weeks, when all you ladies say two weeks.

I took a photograph of my Vagina on my ipad so I could point to exactly what was bothering me, she then got a cotton bud and touched these areas and I was hyper sensitive she said my Vulva was a typically "  atrophied " and raw. Thanks for reading.

Please don't fee that you have 'failed' yourself in some way by needing help with VA or anything else. These things are not dependent on a healthy lifestyle- every woman's hormone levels fall eventually.

I was interested in your comment that she doesn't use mesh. I had a prolapse repair - cystocele and uterine and slight rectocele-  20 years ago in my late 30s. It was done by the traditional methods and no mesh was used and I have wondered ever since if the new methods with mesh would have been superior. Why does she not use mesh?

I think the dose for Ovestin is variable depending on the extent of the VA. Certainly with prolapse there too it may well help to have a longer dose and it won't do any harm- it's a very weak oestrogen.

At least you have found someone who can help which is great!

Yes the Ovestin is as much for the prolapses.she said " that when mesh was first bought out, her and her team decided immediately not to use it, as the vagina is not designed for mesh, very different to a stomach hernia, and she said the problems are now starting to come through" she uses your own muscle for the prolapse, she is a great believer in exercise for the pelvic floor.

So your prolapse surgery has lasted along time ( may I ask how old you are ). I think the main problem with all these " problems " is accepting the new me and to be honest some days I struggle, think I need a physiatrist to add to my list. ;D

I am now almost 59! I had my repair at 36 -ish after my 2nd child due to the damage done by childbirth.
It was not a serious prolapse but I was uncomfortable. I was fortunate to have private health cover so could have it done that way. I had lots of physio first including electrical bits plugged into the pelvic floor, but to be honest once the ligaments have stretched and there is a lot of 'slack' exercise can stop it getting worse but can't cure it all in everyone.

I know that there can be problems with mesh if it rubs on delicate tissue or if your body rejects it, but this has been known for some time and I think drs make the best judgement at the time over what to use on each woman.

You shouldn't be downhearted- there is a lot that can be done to help.

Were you given advice about what NOT to do- such as lifting heavy objects and not doing high impact exercise like bouncy aerobics or running?

Yes I know this now!!!!! I am a florist and lifted a heavy bucket in the summer, and felt something give. I have had them for 27 years and although could be seen, I couldn't feel them and I have lifted heavy things for years, so I suppose it was a case of the " straw that broke the camels back", and the lowering oestrogen I walk five miles aday which helps everything , mentally and physically.

I can't remember what it is to look normal down there, as I had my children when I was 20, but married 30 years.
