Well this morning I woke up to a bleed on day 10 after trying my first month on 100 x12 days of Utrogestan instead of my usual 200 x 12 which has worked absolutely perfectly for me regarding bleeding etc, the only reason I cut down to 100 was due to terrible withdrawal migraines. Now what I would like to know ladies is 1. Do I stop taking the Utrogestan now after 10 days? I would've thought if I'm bleeding there would be little point in continuing  :-\ and 2. What do I do next month? Go back up to 200 x 12? I'm also a little concerned that the bleeding could've been due to the utrogestan not being absorbed properly as I posted earlier that I was having problems using my applicator this month and therefore alot of the Utro was dissolving and getting stuck inside the applicator & when I insert using my finger I don't think it's getting up high enough?? So it could've been this that has triggered the bleed? Any ideas or advice appreciated, thank you ladies, I'm off on holiday end of August and don't want to upset things.

What did you decide to do in the end? I would carry on and finish the course even if you start bleeding - usually best to take the whole course because while you are taking progesterone it stops the uterus lining from building up so much. Horrible re the migraine. I sympathise. I've got one this month :(. Woke up with it this morning after one night with no utro. If you put the utro in with your finger then it will defo go high enough. You really don't need an applicator and I've never been given one - although the licensed way is oral use. My packets never come with an applicator anyway.

Looking for advise on this, I was in Femoston for 2 yrs all ok but few stomach issues so GP and I decided to keep away from tablets and switch to oestrogel 2 pumps a day and Utrogeston which I thought would have been 200mg for 12 days but my script says 1  X 100mg a day for 14 days, is that too low or is anyone else on that? I had wanted this regime for a while but other female GP didn't know anything and this male GP I got was all for it so I was pleased, he did say he emailed someone in the know about it to double check it was right but everything I read says 200mg for 12 days, I'm 46 peri meno for four yrs now, periods were every 3/4 months then started hrt which brought me back to monthly cycle but had been back to every few months past 7 months don't think I was getting full benefit orally

Your GP is wrong. It is 200 mg for 12 days per 28 day cycle. So that is 2 x 100mg capsules. The confusion is because the 200 mg is no longer made except for fertility even though it is exactly the same! Here is the SPC (Summary of Product Characteristics) produced by the manufacturer. Can't understand why your doc got this so wrong. http://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/19895/SPC

If you are progesterone intolerant and under a specialist gynae then this dose can be varied under supervision - but best to start with recommended dose and take it from there.

Just wondering if anybody else has experienced a sharp increase in palpitations when using Utrogestan

During my last Utro use (100mg v-route x 12 nights) the palpitations were through the roof, day and night.  I'm highly progesterone intolerant so this new horrid side effect is most unwelcome!

Last year I had a 24 hour heart monitor re: palps - apparently I have extra heart beats.  Also low BP.

Assuming it's due to the drop in estrogen, also I've been under a huge amount of stress recently (father had a stroke).

Anybody else experienced similar re: palps/Utro?

It definitely makes me feel  more wired up so to speak, I feel like I have had a really strong cup of coffee at bedtime, so could well be from the Utro if you are esp sensitive yes.

Thanks Cassie - yes, I get the wired but tired feeling on Utro.

The palps must be due to the Utro negating the estrogen as they did lessen after I finished the course.

For anybody who may be interested re: palpitations - I found reference to 'York Cardiology' on a previous informative MM thread - very useful and reassuring videos from Dr Gupta, York Cardiology:

Hi all, I'm 53 and have recently started hrt - 1 X 1mg sandrena gel every day and 1 X 100mg utrogestan capsule from day 14-28. IT all started off ok, in that the flushes and night sweats stopped immediately, and I feel less flat mood wise, but 3 months in and I feel like I've ballooned in weight and my boobs are very tender - I must have gone up a cup size. I exercise everyday and eat a very healthy diet so don't really need to change anything there. Does anyone have a similar experience, and if so any suggestions on how to fix it???
I've also been reading about testosterone gel improving libido, anyone out there tried it? Would welcome any thoughts!!!!! X

LIZ:Try switch to continuous regimen....100mg utro every night (can take 3 day break for utro at end of month if needed- you can research this to discuss with your doctor).  It is a great diuretic and can keep weight down.  Unopposed estrogen for 2 wks every month cause estrogen-type changes in a female body like bloating, weight gain, increased breast, yeast infections, etc.  Cyclic regimens are popular for perimenopause and those postmeno who can't tolerate side effects from progesterone but there are many women who have no problems taking utro orally every night. Some even like it this way as evidenced by comments on this site. If you are post meno as your age suggests, you are a good candidate for continuous regimen.

I was once prescribed the equivalent of Sandrena (Divigel 1mg) with utro every night.  It caused me to have headaches so I switched to patches. Thus, I know it is a possibility to take HRT this way.

Hi Liz T

 :welcomemm:

In fact many women find the opposite to be the case from what andius says - which shows how different we are in reaction to added HRT and even our own (endogenous) hormones! Many women get bloating and fluid retention during the second half of the menstrual cycle when progesterone is present and high. I certainly do when I am on the progesterone phase of my HRT - I really bloat up, my boobs expand, I pee a lot and I am relieved once it has left my system and my body returns to normal!

As andius says - you don't know until you try a different regime which is best for you. I would have thought the side effects of oestrogen would have settled by now.

Re cup size - this is a normal part of taking HRT - after all oestrogen is responsible for the development of our breast tissue and what makes us female. Boobs tend to shrink and become floppy as oestrogen falls in menopause. Is there a pattern to the tenderness - because the only thing that is changing throughout the month is the introduction and then cessation of progesterone?

I use testosterone gel and I had a thread about it in private lives here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,27959.60.html

Do ask any questions on that thread if you would like - as it is of a personal nature and this is the public part of the forum! Also if you go to the home page of the forum and put "Testosterone" into the search box you will find some threads. Try to choose those with Testosterone in the title as it is mentioned in huge numbers of general posts.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Everyone!
I have an appointment next week with GP. I have been on Everol conti 50 (Im 5 yrs post meno and 49 and still have womb) since April but I did have to have a break from it after 6 weeks due to bad side effects. I have spoken to my GP about using the more bio-identical HRT and now I want to go armed with the info on which ones and dosage etc. Can anyone help? Also I would like to know if the testerone gel helps with libido (mine has been at zero for years) and which one of those to ask for if it helps? TIA Clare

The Utrogestan confused my GP. She found it under 'micronised progesterone'.

clare663, if you want bio identical, transdermal HRT I would ask for Oestrogel, Utrogestan (micronised progesterone) and Testosterone.  I feel very, very good on this regime and it the best I have used by far so that is why I would recommend it - it has taken me years to finally get there.

Why didn't you get on with Evorel and how well do you tolerate synthetic/artificial progesterone?  The reason I ask is because I only use 100mg Utrogestan vaginally for 7 days every 5 weeks and that is probably why I feel so good!  Any more Utrogestan than that would make this regime completely unviable for me and I would have to have a hysterectomy but of course you may well be different but it is worth thinking about depending on what problems you had with Evorel.

Hi Stellajane - That was my first post and I looked for replies / reaction but didn't see any until now. Clicking on the blue reply tab at the bottom of the page so hoping this works.

No spotting on this regime. No bleed and no spotting.

Hi folks - Really flummoxed about how to reply to the replies I got to my initial post - found on page 52. There must be a simple trick to it so please let me know.

Hurdity - I was in Switzerland when first put on Estrogel and Utrogestan in 2012. I have been back in London and on the NHS since September, 2013. I have continued with one pump of estrogel daily and 100mg of Utrogestan vaginally three times per week, spread out through the week. Lining still below 5 with the twice-yearly scans provided by NHS.

I am also in Dr Panay's menopause clinic at the Queen Charlotte in west London but have only managed to see him once. One member of his team tried to get me to boost Utrogestan to 100mg per day but I experienced instant bloat and massive breast pain on a one-month trial of this regime.

So I reverted to the Swiss gynaecologist's advice: one pump estrogel and three 100mg utrogestan per week. She (gyro) assured me that this was the protocol successfully followed in France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and Germany.

My only problem on it was initial weight gain - boobs up a cup size and all over chubbiness. That settled down initially but is now back with a vengeance, even though i'm working out (resistance training / aqua aerobics / pilates / yoga). The only thing I have changed, on the advice of a doctor at the meno clinic, is applying the gel to my inner thighs instead of inner forearms. My thighs are chunkier than usual and layered in cellulite. Could the local application of estrogel be the culprit?

Await your advice everyone with many thanks!
