Ectopics, palpatations and hrt
« on: December 06, 2013, 06:51:46 PM »

Hi ladies, i have posted before about ectopic heartbeats and after several checks been told nothing wrong.

I have discovered a pattern seems to be emerging as every few weeks i am very aware of them and feel every beat. They can last for a few weeks and then disappear as fast as they came.

Recently i have been getting palpatations at the same time which is awful. I don't really feel unwell but sometimes i get tired.

I am on evoril conti and have been for about two years. I started off on 1/2 patch and then increased to a full patch about one year ago. Does anyone think it would be wise to pop another 1/2 patch on as i am wondering if things are getting a bit haywire again due to needing an increase.

Any advice would be grateful. x

Hi jgr

Palpitations are listed as a common side effect of Evorel conti, but an uncommon side effect of Evorel 50 (ie the oestrogen only patch). This would imply to me that the norethisterone (the synthetic progestogen in this patch) or the combination of this with the oestrogen may possibly be the cause. I would want to investigate this first before considering an increase in dose.

Have you tried any other HRT type because I would suggest maybe seeing if a different product did not cause palpitations?

There is only one other combi patch - which is Femseven - but these are changed weekly so may be less reliable for sticking - I have no experience of these.

Otherwise you would need to go for separate oestrogen and progesterone - ie an oestrogen patch and ideally Utrogestan (micronised "natural" progesterone - in that it is the same compound as in our bodies). If this suited you, you would then be able to increase the oestrogen patch dosage if needed.

I can't remember how old you are and where in menopause?

Thanks Hurdity for your reply.  This is the first hrt i have taken and it seems to have been ok with very little problems. It was suggested i change to a patch for oestrogen and a tablet for the progestogen but i was reluctant to take anymore tablets as i am on quite a few and have stomach problems so don't want to overload the old gut.

I am 55 and have been going through the menopause for nearly 3 years now.
Was hoping to come off the hrt next spring to find out where exactly i am with it. x

Hi jgr - you could try Utrogestan which is micronised progesterone - it isn't a tablet exactly, and I don't know how it affects the stomach as I use it vaginally. I presume you would not want to do this if using it all the time because of sex? However it would not cause palpitations. You can get it in 100 mg doses which are taken daily.
