Menopause and high blood pressure
« on: October 28, 2013, 12:22:50 AM »

I have been on Amlodpine Besylate  5mg for 6 months for high blood pressure. My blood pressure is under control with it. I want to go on HRT and was wondering if this something that my doctor would use as a reason for me not being able to go on HRT. I will be 50 in Dec and have not had a period in almost a year. I have decieded that I want to ask my doctor to go on HRT. She has been telling me to wait. I want to have as much information as I can when I talk to her. Thanks for your help

http://www.rxlist.com/norvasc-drug.htm

looks like only pregnancy, breast feeding, liver or renal disease or allergy are reasons not to take this drug

doesn't say anything about HRT interference

see what your doctor says about trying estrogen patches which are bio identical (not oral).....then if she objects, tell her you read about this drug(make sure you did) and didn't see why it would interfere, and ask her why it interferes? Ask for progesterone (prometrium capsules) ,also bioidentical, to protect your uterus.  These are not as involved for body to process as they are most like the hormones we had before  when we were younger.

I suspect she will either be speechless or write the RX for patches and progesterone HRT....which you may have to take sequentially.  Make sure to ask for the progesterone and not get a patch with the estrogen and a synthetic progestin mixed together unless that is all she will give you.  At your age, she may want to put you on BCP's which I have never taken, but I think they might interfere with HBP.....you should read up on this also to to be prepared in case she tries to give you BCPs instead.  How many mo till it is 1 year since last period??????

I'm on 10mg of Ramipril for blood pressure and on Oestrogen, have been for long time. Just involves getting 6 monthly BP checks.

I take blood pressure tablets and HRT, have done for 2 years. No problems. You are only on a small dose of blood pressure tablet anyway, so I don't think the doctor would be able to say no.

This is what it says on this site re blood pressure ( hypertension) and HRT:

Hypertension
Blood pressure should be measured and, if high, should be controlled prior to starting HRT. Blood pressure measurement should be repeated 3 months after starting HRT and is then usually checked at annual review. There is a very small risk of conjugated equine estrogens causing a rise in blood pressure which resolves on cessation of treatment. In the presence of controlled hypertension, HRT is unlikely to worsen control; some recommend using transdermal (patch or gel) HRT.
Sage should be used with caution if hypertensive and St.John's Wort should be used with caution if taking antihypertensive therapy.

Thank you ladies. OMG you are so great. Since finding this forum I have been able to deal with things alittle better. Hearing that all of you are  or have been where I am right now, for some reason makes it better. Andius asked me when was my last period. In Feb. at the beginning of the month I had some lite spotting for 2days. It was not even enough for a panty liner, and nothing at all since then. I didn't even think of it as a period but that was the last time that there was anything that could remotely be called a period. So in Feb it will be a year and I turn 50 in the end of Dec. I am trying to wait until Jan to talk to my doctor but on some days I don't think I can wait until then. Thank you so much

Well, I do know how you feel!!!! If you can just wait until that January appt.....I think you may have some better luck getting HRT, but maybe some other doc would have pity on you and prescribe it earlier....it probably depends on which doctor you happen to see, unfortunately.

You shouldn't need to wait until January - if you feel you need it now because of symptoms - you should be able to have it!

Most of us start HRT before we have been a year without periods - we would struggle otherwise. No doctor should suggest you have to wait until post-meno before starting HRT - that is a weird viewpoint!

Hi Blue Goddess,
This time last year I had been off the BCP for 6 months.
No period / bleeding, FSH of 103 after stopping pill. Another FSH 6 months later read 108.
I had been feeling horrid (MS as well as meno).
I then asked if I could have HRT, oestrogen is recorded as helping MS.
One, nice female, GP said yes.
You have to ask, keep on asking
