Question on the body's hormone production.
« on: October 26, 2013, 12:51:18 PM »

Hi

I have another question, as I am still learning about meno.

When we take HRT, does this mean our bodies stop producing its own oestrogen/progesterone?

If the body stops producing its own hormones, how long after starting HRT pills does the body stop producing it's own, is it instant, or does it take weeks, months, etc??

Thanks

I don't think it stops, it just tops it up.

Thanks for replying but my doctor didn't sound sure.
Was hoping to get a more definite answer, but thanx for your reply.

Taking HRT does not stop your body producing its own hormones, it just simply tops them up as they decline. Eventually as you progress through meno your own hormones tail off but this can take many many years.

Some women on HRT find they get unexplained bleeding as the body struggles to produce your natural hormones. This can go on for years.
Sorry I can't remember how old you are but I remember you being peri which means you have decreasing but also fluctuating hormones.

Everyone is different in how long it takes to go through meno. Some women in their 80s still get hot flushes which means they are still having hormone production going on although it will be tiny.

HRT will not switch off any of your own hormones.....Just top them up.
