New Menopausal Treatment - Duavee
« on: October 08, 2013, 06:41:27 PM »

Hi
Have been googling today and found a recent announcement in the last few days with regard to a new treatment for Menopausal Symptoms which the FDA in America has approved  called Duavee (estrogens/bazedoxifene) - from what I can understand it is a form of HRT but can be used without Progesterone.

Not sure how long this will take or even if it will become available in the UK. but would be a godsend for someone like me who cannot take Progesterone due to a severe allergy and still struggling with severe hot flushes/sweats.

Remember reading about this years ago

There seems to ne renewed interest in Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators  Tamoxifen is one of them and used to prevent breast cancer cells.

"Some common side effects of DUAVEE include muscle spasms, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, abdominal pain, throat pain, dizziness and neck pain [1]. Estrogen agonist/antagonists (including bazedoxifene) and estrogens individually are known to increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), otherwise known as blood clots [1]. Patients should talk regularly with their healthcare providers about how long to stay on treatment with DUAVEE"

I guess it still wont be prescribed for over sixties then  :(

I just wondered if Dr Currie might be able to give us her opinion and some information on this, and also an idea if and when it will be widely available  (I read it will be available in America the first quarter of next year.)

There are natural SERMS Femarelle, ( who knows maybe Pharma has refined and changed and patented it)
we have had discussions in the past about it

I think you will still have to weigh up the pros and cons of DUAVEE  if it becomes available here.

The side effects look far worse than HRT which would concern me. I don't react well to a lot of meds but of course everyone is different.

I think that Duavee could possibly be a last resort option for those of us who are intolerant to Progesterone and are unable to take normal HRT.

There is such a limited option of treatments for those suffering severely with hot flushes and unable to take normal HRT - in all honesty HRT seems to be the only treatment that really works.

I am presently trialing Gabapentin  (again a last resort option due to side affects) in the hope of stopping severe hot flushes/sweats.

Hi

Sorry for late reply, but not been on forum for a few weeks - Gabapentin has definitely helped with my horrendous hot flushes and sweating.

Not stopped them  completely, but now experiencing two or three flushes a day which are manageable, rather than experiencing them every hour.

However, have had to take a higher dose than normally needed in order to gain any relief - 2 x 300mg morning and evening together with 1 x 300mg at lunchtime.

I am responding and realize this is an "older" thread.  Has anyone had any experiences since this time with taking Duavee??

Hi
Sorry for late reply as haven't been on the Forum for a while!
I am now actually taking Duavive (UK Name) and have been for 9 months.
After taking the Gabapentin for over 12 months, it gradually ceased to help the hot flushes and they came back with avengence.  I was experiencing around 15 flushes a day and each flush left me dripping in sweat - my quality of life was seriously affected as I shied away from socialising and became quite depressed.
I could not take HRT due to developing a severe Progesterone allergy and had tried every other alternative, but with no relief.
My GP referred me to a Consultant who basically told me that the only guaranteed solution is Estrogen, but that to take it without Progesterone I would need a Hysterectomy.
I then asked about Duavive/Duavee (HRT without Progesterone) which he admitted he had heard of, but knew little about.  He agreed that due to my Progesterone allergy I would be a prime candidate for this and agreed to find out more about it.

It took a few months for him to finally get back to me after speaking to Colleagues, but he agreed to prescribe it for me and by this time it was actually available in the UK.
As I said, I have been on it for 9 months now and my life has turned around - no more hot flushes, more energy and a general sense of well being, which I haven't felt in years.
I have experienced no side effects whatsoever (touch wood) and see the Consultant on a regular basis.
I have to pay for the private prescription, which I pay gladly as it has given me my life back  X
