I'd hoped to get by without it, but I'm so fed up! So I went to my GP this morning - the same one who gave me a fruit cake recipe last time I talked to her about it, along with a list of foods to include that contain phytoestrogens. She has a special interest in Womens' health, and is probably menopausal or post herself.
I've been getting hot flushes on and off for a couple of years. I last had periods in April and May this year, none for 6 months before that, 2 before that, 6 months without before etc. The flushes just started coming back after a longish absence. I ache all over. I feel like I need to pee all the time, a similar discomfort to having cystitis but without the pain, and also unlike cystitis, I do actually need to pee all the time. I'm getting up in the middle of the night to go to the loo, then again early morning, and often not getting back to sleep. This morning I got up at 5.30, cos I'd been awake since 5 and my alarm was due to go off at 6.15. I'm experiencing vaginal dryness too and my libido is really low. And my memory is appalling!
I did some reading and some thinking and weighing up the pros and cons and the risk factors (my sister has had breast cancer 3 times) and decided I would give HRT a try.
I managed to get an appointment for first thing this morning with the doc I wanted to see. She was lovely, spelled out all the options and let me choose which one I wanted to go with. She described it as an early menopause for me (I'm 48), said that at my age she calls it Hormone Top-up Therapy, not replacement, and that nature had 'diddled me' out of several years of hormones. She's fab!
So I now have a 3 month pack of Prempak-C, the lower dose. I've bitten the bullet and taken the first one. I'm really interested to see how they work for me.
