Hi there my name is Kerry and i have plucked up the courage to join the forum after many weeks of reading.  I have just turned 40 and been told i am peri which has been a bit of a shock all of a sudden feel very old.  I have over the last 10 months suffered most symptons but by far the worst is mood swings and anxiety.  I eventually resorted to taking hrt elleste duet last Wednesday by Friday evening had major panic attack lasted 3 hours and the whole weekend felt like I was going mad, spoke to the doctor on Monday who told me to stop taking it and I have got to go back and see him Tuesday to discuss a different brand, I'm just so scared now that the same thing will happen again, I am due to go on holiday next Friday and I am frightened to go now i have all this anxiety again. Any advice would be helpful side effects on hrt never seems to mention increased anxiety.

Many thanks sorry for the long introduction
Kerry :)

Hello there. I don't have your problems, but someone will pop by soon who can help. A number of the ladies on here have similar problems.

Hey Kes

Sorry to see you go so soon? Maybe you were hoping for a reply sooner. Sometimes posts do get missed and it's August so members are often away like I've been.

If you are reading this do consider re-joining as there is a lot of help and support on here! I am replying in case you are continuing to read the message boards.

I can imagine it must be a shock to be told you are peri-menopausal at 40. I presume there must have been a reason for this - for example having irregular periods as well as flushes and sweats. If your oestrogen levels are declining it is very important to take HRT to protect your bones at least until the natural age of menopause ie 52-ish.

There are different side effects of different types of HRT - but women seem to have most problems with the progestogen component of HRT, especially the synthetic progestins. It doesn't sound as though you have got to this point yet though? If your body has low oestrogen levels then it will take a while to readjust - and maybe you took too much too soon?

You didn't say which dose of Elleste you were given but tablets can give daily surges in hormone levels, and have to go through the liver too.  Personally I would recommend patches as these provide a steadier dose of oestrogen directly into the body.

Good luck with your visit to the doctor and if you feel like re-joining to tell us how you get on then you would be very welcome! Hope you manage to enjoy your holiday.
