Hi, I can agree with you sweatybet. I too suffer with dryness but the probe was very well lubed and it does just sit in the entrance. The lady doing it was lovely, chatting away and it was over really quickly xxx

I had this recently the same as sweatybet said - full bladder for the US scan and then quick wee and the transvag one. Not at all painful because well lubed - just felt a bit weird as they moved it about - that was all. Just like a smear - and my lady was very friendly too!

You'll be fine, and good that it's a quick appointment. My scan came through very quickly after my specialist appt -  just like yours, but then have had to wait quite a while for the hysteroscopy (next week) ie another month. I first went to the doc about the bleeding in early May so quite a long time ago and still don't have an answer!

Thanks for all the replies, not so worried now.....

Hurdity, hope your hysteroscopy appt goes ok next week, keep us  posted on the outcome.... I'll let everyone know how I get on after my appt a week today.

Btw.... did you manage to drink 2 pints an hour before the US scan, and didn't feel like wetting yourself!!!!??? I'm frightened I'll wet myself whilst they are rubbing the scanner on my tummy!!!!! hee hee!

I had both these scans a couple of months ago due to post menopausal bleeding and then had  to have a hysteroscopy as my womb lining was slightly thickened. The  transvaginal scan was fine - far less painful than a smear. I also had to have a polyp removed - it was done while I had the hysteroscopy under local and was over v quickly.  The thought of it all was far worse than the actual procedures!  Good luck - let us know how it goes xx

Hi everyone,

As promised, following on from this string of messages, heres what happened at my ultrasound and internal yesterday.... they were running 25 minutes late, which was almost unbearable with a full bladder, but they did apologise, and the lady who did the ultrasound and internal was very nice..... for the internal, she even asked if I wanted to put the probe in myself.... When I told her I was also on Vagifem for vaginal dryness, she immediately said she would put extra lubrication on the probe to hopefully make it easier for me.... and it wasn't as bad as I thought (as you ladies had previously said)... was a little uncomfortable when she was moving the probe around, and was getting a little sore, as she was having problems finding my right ovary on the screen (she actually never found it!!!! worrying!)....
Anyhow.... what she found...... I have a fibroid, which she said not to worry about as it is only 1.6cm long, and very common in women, and that could be whats making me bleed after 3 and a half years..... and she also found that I have a cyst on my left ovary (the one she could find!)... she said they are only concerned if you are menopausal and have them!!!! to which I replied I am menopausal (I had already asked her if she had wanted me to take off my HRT patch from my tummy (thats where I like to stick them), before she did the ultrasound)... 'oh' she said, that makes a difference.... she said the size and shape of the cyst will have to be monitored and I will have to go back for an ultrasound and internal (lovely!) every 3-4 months for at least a year.
I was told to make an appointment within the week with my GP to discuss the scan results (can't get in to see my favourite GP for 9 days though, which is fine) and to go from there......
As a parting quote, she said she looks forward to seeing me in approx 3 - 4 months! Deep joy!!!!!!

Anybody else been diagnosed with fibroids or a ovarian cyst, and can give me any advice? Do I need to do anything different, so just continue as normal.....?

Think when I see GP next week, if there is time, will also discuss my HRT again, and see if I am infact on the right one......am I post or pre menopausal!!!! God knows!!!!

Thanks ladies,

Hi mand

Thanks for updating us - sounds like you had a bit of an ordeal there!

Hopefully you will still be able to carry on with HRT as the fibroid is small - but of course they will want to monitor it. I'm not sure what they do about ovarian cysts? I presume the reason they couldn't find one of your ovaries I imagine, is because it is now so small - they had difficulty finding mine too. I think they atrophy to some extent once they are no longer functioning?

Sorry I can't advise and I don't think the sonographers are qualified to give advice on treatment. They just let you know informally what they can see.

In the meantime, if it was me I would just carry on, especially as you will see the GP next week.... when hopefully you will be able to discuss HRT options and maybe change to something different if you need to. I hope the GP knows what s/he is talking about!!

I had the same experience with an internal scan, they could not find one of my overies but were not worried as apparently its quite common, its because they are so small that they just seem to hide under something but again I was told that this is good as if they are small and not showing there is nothing on them etc.

Hi all,

Well went to my GP today to find out more about my results from my ultrasound scan and transvaginal scan last week..... well she mentioned the fibroid, and said it was nothing to worry about as only small, but said the cyst they found on my left ovary was a bit more worrying, and that they want me to go for a CA 125 blood test that apparently shows up any cancer cells!!!! Is this correct? I did, like more of us do, google it as soon as I got home, but didn't really get any useful information. As well as having a blood test for that, she said she wants me to also have another FSH levels blood test to check that I am indeed menopausal!!!!!! HELLO, I have been on HRT (different ones) for approx. 2 and a half years, on and off, and my FSH levels were off the scale last time they were tested. I suffered with terrible hot flushes every 20 minutes before going onto HRT and had to sleep on a towel due to dreadful night sweats, and am also on vagifem for dryness!
She only asked for this to be done, when I asked her if she had any ideas what caused the abnormal bleeding that I had, and when I said I had had 2 periods lasting 6 days, in the course of 3 weeks! She said perhaps my ovaries are working again!!!! Then laughed!
I also mentioned that I thought I could be on the wrong HRT, and should be on a pre-menopausal one and not a post-meno one, because of my history of being on the mini pill etc, and again, I was told she wasn't concerned about me staying on the post one I'm on.....I did mention that some hot flushes were starting to come back and I was a bit concerned, and she said that if it starts to really concern me, I can go back to her, and she can refer me back to the menopause clinic where I went 18 mths ago!
So, to cut a long story short, I have made an appointment for a blood test for the 9th September (earliest appointment they had) and will go from there!

Oh, almost forgot, the GP said the reason they couldn't see my right ovary was that I had gas in my bowel blocking the view of it!!!! How embarrassing!!!!! hee hee

This menopause nightmare journey continues!!!!

Hi mand

Thanks for the update - all sounds very confusing!

Good thing they are being thorough and to make sure they test for everything - better that than neglecting something important.

Fingers crossed all will be OK after your blood test and you can go to the menopause clinic (again) and really get sorted hopefully.

Take care of yourself in the meantime and try not to worry.

Thanks Hurdity,

At least they seem to be on the ball and doing everything that is needed......

I'm trying not to worry, but easier said than done, now every little pain or ache I'm thinking the worst..... as well as all this worry I also have a few work issues which I won't go into on this site, and both my parents have had falls in the last 18 mths, (mum, 18 months ago, dad, 2 months ago) and have been in and out of hospital, so just seems its all pilling up at the moment....
Its always nice to get feedback from this site, and to know that I'm not alone,
Thanks again,  I will keep you posted....

Hi Mand, ovarian cysts in post menopausal woman are a lot more common than we think. I also have one, its been lurking around for about 2 years. I go annually for a scan, the gynae said that it is tiny and they can usually see from the scan if it is fluid filled or something else, he also sends me for the CA 125 blood tests and if those come back in order, then they usually dont worry about it unless it gets bigger or the bloodwork changes. So, try not to worry about it, I know its difficult, but lots of women have cysts and they are usually almost always benign. x

Hi, I am pleased that you are sorted. I am just going through the same process. Had my biopsy before the scan , just worked out that way. Perhaps its because I went to a and e in my panic when I started bleeding after 3 years. Never had hrt. At a and e they took swabs ect, blood tests , not sure what they were for. Then 5 weeks later just had the scans. the scan person said nothing apart from , if you havnt had the results in 7 to 10 days ring up and ask. I am worrying myself to death. This meno thing has taken over my life. Had 4 years of horrible symptoms. Trying my hardest to be positive.  :-\
