Hello ladies
Am supposed to be heading off for romantic long weekend tomorrow to celebrate anniversary and yes guess what - a period.
Haven't had one for 4 days short of a year, and for the 12 months before that had been gradually tailing off so thought I was through it all.
Then 10 days ago had a bleed from hell, flooding everywhere. Trotted off to lady gp who prescribed Norethisterone for a week and said I was allowed 1 period in a year (whatever that meant). Sure enough everything stopped but now am straight back bleeding again
My question is:
Do i try to get to doctors again in morning before leaving for trip
Or do I hope it's just a mild blip
or do I pack a whole truckload of STs etc?
How 'normal' is this?
God I hate the unpredicabilty of it all.... I want to be a man!!!!! >:(

Forgot to say I'm 56 and never had any HRT or other medication. Had various other meno symptoms over past 2-3 years but these have all tailed off nicely and I was actually feeling 'normal' again for a few months :(

What a pain Redfaced! What your doc meant is that any bleeding within a year is ok but if you go more than a year without periods and then experience a bleed you have to report it to the doc so that it can be investigated.

The norethisterone will have slowed down the bleeding but once you stop taking it bleeding can start again if you have some womb lining still to be shed.

What meno symptoms were you having? Things like hot flushes and sweats can often disappear before a period starts. That has caught a few of us out - thinking "ah nice to feel better" before wham another period arrives!

Hopefully this will be your last one.

Hi Redfaced

These things happen, get back to your Dr and explain that you do NOT need bleeding for this trip.

Might be worth explaining to your OH what is happening, they can be surprisingly understanding as to what is going on.

I think  Norethisterone is a form of progesterone which is used to treat heavy periods, whatever, it isn't right for what you want to do at the moment.

Don't know if it's a blip, might be worth taking STs just in case.
Whatever happens, enjoy your anniversary

Hopefully, somebody will be along who knows what they  are talking about.

Hi Taz
Yes the flushes and sweats had stopped, and for some considerable time, 6 months or so. I also wasn't feeling anxious or 'not me'. I was back to 'me'.
This is so sudden and so heavy.
I'm just hoping it's just going to be one or 2 - or am I being delusional?

Hi limpy
All support gratefully received
I'll try for an appointment tomorrow

The problem is that your womb lining had obviously built up and then needed to be shed. By taking Norethisterone, which is a progesterone, the bleeding stopped but once you stopped it the womb lining began to come away again. It may be possible to get some more norethisterone from the GP to at least delay the rest of the period until you come home.

How long was the heavy bleeding going on for before if you don't mind me asking?

I've had a similar sort of experience, in that all meno symptoms tailed off and disappeared. I went six months, then had a period out of the blue, then two weeks and had another one. Both pretty light though, nothing alarming.   Not sure what to expect now.  Crazy isn't it? No-ones the same and you never know what will happen next.

Why asking?

Hi Taz
Just been reading some of your earlier posts. this week I've had terribling stomach griping, nausea and burps, now gone 2 days after norethisterone stopped, Coincidence?

Was so bloated looked 7 months pregnant, went to yoga and came out slimmer (only 5 months gone!) and thought some twists had relieved some wind but that was 2 days after norethisterone stopped too.

I go to weekly diet/ exercise class and was weighed at 2.5 pounds heavier than a week ago and I've hardly been eating.

I was thinking of asking for more norethisterone to stop bleeding, but not so sure now!

I'm thinking it's all

I only asked because I wondered why you had seen the GP and thought that maybe you had experienced a few weeks of heavy bleeding. Five days is not excessive at this time of our lives and it seems a bit quick for your GP to give you Norethisterone. Was it because you were worried about the bleeding - heavy bleeding can be worrying and it takes a bit of time to work out what to use to enable you to leave the house! Some of us use the night-time pads plus super plus tampons to give a bit more time before needing to change.

Yes progesterone can give the symptoms you mention. As to whether to ask for more it really depends on how you want to feel this weekend.

Think the gp gave me the norethisterone because it was a year since last period. I also had what we thought was a recurrence of diverticulitis. I now think whatever was going on digestively was more likely hormonal.  She has also referred me for blood tests and a scan. Only time will tell. Fingers crossed but is my last one (but no bets placed). Thanks for the support.
PS the 4 poster bed and 2 person shower have not seen the use for which they were intended unfortunately  ;) but at least Boots is back making money out of me.
