Painful joints
« on: May 07, 2013, 05:27:00 PM »

Hello, this is my first time here, and I have to say that it is a very easy site to navigate  :), right, here goes :- I am 51 years old and i was diagnosed with breast cancer January 2012, had two ops, chemo and then radiotherapy, I returned to work January of this year, before starting chemo, I'd had a few random hot flushes, but nothing major, however the chemo stopped my periods and kicked started the menopause with a rather nasty, hard kick, hot flushes have calmed down a bit now all cancer treatment has finished, but my knees and hands are very very painful, I've had blood tests for arthritis, they came back normal, so I'm guessing the painful joints are due to the menopause, has anyone else experienced these problems? If so is there anything that can be taken or done to help??

Hi bikerchic - welcome to the forum.

Well done on coming out of the other side of breast cancer and chemo - it must have been a horrible time for you. Although joint pain can be part of menopause your post rang some bells with me as I worked with a woman a few years ago who had treatment for breast cancer and then had crippling pains in her hands and feet. This was put down to the effects of the chemo and gradually got better after about six months - sorry it wasn't sooner!! She didn't suffer at all while chemo was going on.  Have you been told that chemo can cause this in some women? She managed her pain with anti inflammatories under guidance from her cancer specialist. I have found this after a quick search which may be helpful http://www.curetoday.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/article.PrintArticle/article_id/1802

You will find lots of support on here.

Hi Taz, reading your post did bring back the conversation with my oncologist in January, he did say that the pain could be a side effect from cancer treatment, I'd completely forgotten what he'd said, ( chemo brain ) that's my excuse anyway :-D. Hopefully the pain will start to ease soon, thank you for the help, it's very much appreciated.                       Toni x

Hi Toni and welcome,

Can I also add that my brother went through chemo for colon cancer. No trouble at all during but for about eight months after he finished treatment he had crippling pain in both knees and hands.

He's all good now though so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Take care,

Hi Claire, that's great news, your brother had the same painful joints as I've got, it started about a month after I finished radiotherapy, gradually getting worse, had me in tears the other day, but now I know it WILL stop I can deal with it, :-) Toni x
