Muscle jerks, twitches & spasms
« on: September 14, 2012, 05:03:34 PM »

Hello, I am new to the forum and wonder if anyone else experiences jerks, twitches and spasms?  I get them all over, particlarly my tummy and they make me ache all over.

My GP has said it is 'just' anxiety.  I know I have anxiety, I don't sleep at all well and I get panic attacks but I am convinced this is due to constantly fluctuating hormones. :'(

I am 48 and have been in peri for a few years.  I have had post menopausal readings followed by normal reading and everything inbetween!

Hope someone out there can offer advice.  I am thinking of discussing HRT with my gp and hope this may help?

Cheers, Sal x ::)

Hi Sal

Its always quiet on the forum around this time so dont worry there will be others along to help.

I have to say I have been on the forum for a good few years now and cant recall anyone saying they have this.

Could it be nerve damage/problems. Has the GP suggested any other causes?
We have a big forum and lots of people will see your post and will respond very soon.

Hi Honeyb,

Thanks for your post  :)

I have seen a neurologist who says there is nothing wrong and puts it down to over excited nervous system/anxiety.  I am sure it is anxiety related but I do think the anxiety is caused or at least made worse by fluctuating hormones.

Also we are world wide so if people post from the 'other side' of the Pond responses may seem slow.

I get a twitch in the corner of my eyelid when I'm tired, it seems to be hugely noticeable but it isn't.  I also get electric 'zaps' in my skull which make me wince because I am taking antidepressant medication.

Nothing is 'just' or 'only' anything  >:(.  Have you been lifting anything in recent months? where you could have pulled a muscle?  What has your GP suggested to help with the panic attacks?  I take a beta-blocka at night which has enabled me.

What other symptoms do you suffer with that suggests you should try HRT?  HRT can protect heart and bones etc. and blood tests are notoriously unreliable for telling us which stage of meno we are at because hormone levels alter every hour!

Hi Sal W. welcome to the forum. If your gp thinks anxiety, and you do too, have you been prescribed something to deal with it. My daughter had myclonic jerks in her legs and arms. Gp gave her propanalol, within days they were gone. It turned out for her it was Epilepsy. I am not in an way suggesting epilepsy but saying how well the beta blockers worked for her anxiety and jerks. Hope this makes sense. Eddie.xx

Hi Sal
I've replied on your other post.  :)
I developed awful anxiety with peri. Thankfully, it's gone now that I'm on HRT so, for me, it was definitely hormonal. My IBS also went into overdrive and one of the strange things I've always had with flare-ups is shaking/trembling and jerking legs, especially when lying down.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I was prescribed diazepam and was on never more than 6mg daily for 5 months.  It did not help a lot except in the early days and after tapering gradually I have not taken any for 4 weeks.

I have also tried a beta blocker but it made my insomnia worse and didn't really help.

I have improved a great deal with therapy and positive thinking.  I get very few panic attacks now, feel less anxious but am left with difficulty sleeping and the muscle twitches.

I have had hot flushes but these have diminished lately.  I had 6 months period free but had one last month and I have had gaps up to 3 months during the past couple of years.  My hair is getting thinner and my skin drier.

I am going to discuss options re HRT with my gp and take it from there.

My Mum had chronic osteoporosis, the complications of which led to her death.  I have osteopenia so I think HRT would be beneficial.

Thanks again for all your posts!

Hi Sal and welcome.  I take an AD for the anxiety cause by the menopause.  I have had some twitching mainly in my eyes and my legs.  I was on HRT but have had to stop it for a while.

Keep posting there will always be someone who will reply wth good advice and support.

Good afternoon SalW, and welcome!

There has been a recent posting from Dyan about "squeezing and twitching" in the pelvic area, and I responded by saying that I had exactly the same right from the onset of the symptoms that arrived all together in the space of a week! I also have some bowel/gastric disturbances that make my legs and bum twitch like popcorn popping under the skin! It seems to be worse just before I go to sleep. I also have twitching in the shoulder blades, sometimes a symptom of IBS. I freaked at first but now understand the weirdness of it all and just let it happen, nothing I can do. I do take low dose HRT which keeps anxiety and flushes at bay but allows some of the other symptoms to "carry on " in the background!! Feels like an alien force but seems to be very common!

MINNIE.

I have had this mostly when my anxiety was at its worst.  Magnusium is very good for this it really helps. I take a powered one as the tablets are hard to swallow.

I've had these muscle jerks at top of my outer thigh lately, usually at bedtime -  popcorn popping under the skin is a very good description of it Minnie.  Weird?!!

Hi Lesley - yes I do - it is a strange feeling when they subside but am full of other symptoms at the moment I just take it in my stride - I get them in my shoulders and tummy too and my other half said I almost bounce out of bed in my sleep - when I do sleep - I have been prone to anxiety for years and it is always worse then.  The strangest thing I did was nod off then my tummy jerked and the dog woke up (he was laying on my tummy) and barked at it!  Thank you for posting this!!!  I was feeling really miserable but this has at least brought a smile to my face - dont worry and thank you xx
