There is an air gap in the U bend in which they can shelter from the 'flush' of water - then they crawl up again in the night when the house is quiet - this was shown on Blue Peter or Tomorrow's World or some such programme many years ago

Whoops I mean, I wouldn't have a problem putting a beetle out, not Paul McCartney!
Scareythought that spiders come in at night! I haven't had the windows open since, just put up with the
heat! Everything plugged up in the bathroom

I hate the thought of creepy crawlies coming in at night through the window so I bought an insect screen from Lidl. You stick strips of velcro type stuff around the window frame and then cut to size a piece of fine mesh netting. Place over the velcro strips and ta da you can have the window open at night! One of my best purchases this year (only cost about £3 if that).

Has anyone tried putting conkers around the house to deter the beasties?
My hubby said he removed a BIG spider from the curtain in our bedroom last night. This was just before I was going to go up to bed......I wish he hadn't told me, and just removed it.....

My OH does the same thing. Always tells me about beasties he's found and got rid of. But worst of all he tells me about the ones that have evaded him.
Totally freaks me out.

Conkers make absolutely not difference! I used them for 3 years and had webs all over the nuts as well as a spider sitting on top
we have named our lounge spider "henrietta" - she was walzting around the room on Fri evening but NOTHING was going to stop me watching Fairport

Oh good heavens Ellie, I wish I did not know that! I haven't any more waltzers or critters in here since the windows have been shut. Thanks for the tip about velcro Catweazle. I walked straight into a web (from fence right over to lampost) this morning and nearly ended up inhaling and eating a beastie! Anyway after a lot of jumping about and batting in the air, no damage done!

If I put conkers in the corners then they would be eaten by the dog
Nothing lasts in corners long enough to get webs as I am a bit of a manic cleaner.....all my corners are done at least once a week....then I am a happy bunny

Apparently spiders aren't very keen on lemon pledge. Also they don't like hedge apples!

I love my spiders - there is a very patient one in the downstairs cloakroom at the minute. He has spun his web close to the floor in order to catch the occasional silverfish which wanders out from the skirting board. How does it know they are there? The cloakroom hasn't got a window so is dark most of the time but still the spiders seem to sense where to go. I am torn - I rather like my silverfish.

Definition of hedge apples
"The fruits of the Maclura pomifera tree are called Osage oranges or hedge apples. These large, green, bumpy fruits are inedible, but contain certain chemicals believed to have repellent powers. Many promote the use of these hedge balls to repel spiders."

Thanks for the info Taz. Do you know where these hedges are??!! X
It looks like these apples grow in Texas, so not something wind fallen in these parts!
Luckily I have some lemon pledge, which I have just sprayed under the bed and around the window sills, so no beasties in this household tonight.

I tried chestnut oil spray spider repellant around window frames and doors etc.
Stank to high heaven and I'm sure it attracted spiders!
At least lemon pledge smells ok.
