I remember the crowds coming doon the water for the fair fortnight. There were hoards of them. When I was little I used to watch them coming off the train with prams full of blankets and pillows and a bag of coal at the bottom of the pram with a couple of weans on top.
It was sight never to be forgotten  ;D

We will have lost our southern friends with this one CG  ;D

Nae doubt HB!

Them were the days, as they say. If you went doon the waater you were well off!  ;D. Heck I remember a holiday with my mum to Largs. Now considering we lived in Paisley at the time, it was luxury!  ;D My mother decided we should go by bus, much cheaper than train. I got excited when I saw water!  ;D Onwards a few years and we stretched it to Brodick. Loved that holiday, mum hated it. We were decanted from overful hotel to a bungalow up a very dark lane. So not my mother's style. She was used to posh. I've tried to persuade hubby to go ever since, but wasting my breath. I remember the row of fisherman's houses at Corrie, a different shaped window in each house that the wives put candles in all those years ago to guide their men home, or something of that ilk.

Or Rothsay.
They came in their hundreds to Ardrossan. All the tenement flats were full to bursting. All the wifies and the weans. Remember seeing them paddling with the dresses tucked into the stocking tops. Formidable women. The town was over run.
Corrie is still the same, not changed a bit. Still the same cottages. Stayed in one a few years ago.
Glasgow first then Paisley then Greenock. They still close stuff for the fair.

Some of the wifies were big women. Wouldn't have liked to come home with a broken packet. Their men always seemed wee compared to them.
Oh happy days watching them. It was better than a show.
The better off ones had prams the rest wheeled a bogie off the bus or the train.
Think they brought the contents of the house with them including the coal.

It's absolutely SOAKING in Lochinver!   Just as well I've got my REALLY waterproof bright yellow jacket with me, that I bought in Honfleur ten years ago - fisherman-strength weather protection and good for at least another ten years!   I'm not complaining, though.  We're relaxing indoors while looking out over the loch.   Am now bracing myself for a trip (in my yellow jacket!) to the village to get crisps, coke and cake.  Otherwise known as unhealthy holiday food but essential for a rainy-day lunch............. :)

It's what's required on a miserable day. I was planning on buying a cake too, but as I'm trying to budge last few pounds before holiday I managed to restrain myself.  ;)

As for the yellow jacket. I remember having one years ago, great things. Unfortunately I outgrew it.  ::)

I am told

There is no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothing.

Not sure I quite believe it  ::)

It's when it's horizontal, nothing keeps you dry then.

Alternating grey skies and sunshine.
Also had some noticeable rain. Been quite breezy but it's not cold so it doesn't hurt.

Cooler
Grey/white clouds
Blue sky
Washing blowing hard

It was the same in Kent - kids and mums came down for 'the picking' (hops) and Dads joined them at weekends. They lived in family groups in 'sheds' with out-door fires ……… it was there 2/3 week holiday.
