Ahh that's a shame CG.

I use to have house martins nesting (above our bedroom window) at my old house. It was great watching them with their little heads poking out of the tiny hole. We had to be very very careful not to open the window, otherwise the whole nest would break up.

Hopefully yours will re-build & produce another batch.

Think they've given up now. At least it saves me washing my front door step daily. Nest fell off couple of years back also. We have plastic cladding & I think that may be the root cause. Nesting materials not gripping well enough.

Could you buy some nesting arks? which screw into the brickwork?  [see one of the bird food sales catalogues, i.e. CJ Wildbirds or Ark]?

Hedgehog been seen regularly for a couple of weeks :-).  Birds in between nestlings ……. though still demanding live meal worms  ::).  Fish feeding well, layering on fat …….. 1st dragonfly 'pupa' left on the reeds so 1 has flown  :-*

I saw the item about the albino squirrel - it's still a tree rat  :-\

That's harsh! I like grey squirrels as well as red squirrels.  :-\

Sorry about your housemartins CG. I think that it is difficult to get the nests to stick to cladding especially in a dry spell. Not sure if you've been having rain or not.

I LOVE red squirrels.  They are totally different to the greys which were imported from the US bringing in a pox which devastates our native species  :'(.  They are what they are, like em or loathe em.

The poor grey squirrel gets such a battering over the "pox" but man played it's part too with over-hunting of the red squirrel (80,000 killed by The Highland Squirrel Club between 1890 and 1920!) and destruction of habitat. There is an informative article here written by Professor Acorn who is a grey squirrel http://www.grey-squirrel.org.uk/reds.php  Maybe a red squirrel will come along with the other side of the story  ;D

I think they had to send in their tails as proof they had killed them. Poor Squirrel Nutkin

"The third notable factor in their decline is human persecution. For many years, Red Squirrels were seen as pests and were targeted by gamekeepers. Lady Lovat was instrumental in getting red squirrel's re-introduced to the Highlands back in 1844, but by the early 1900s, their success was becoming a cause for concern among foresters and clubs were set up in Scotland for the pure and simple reason of killing or trapping Red Squirrels. With financial incentives for anyone who sent in Red Squirrel's tails, it wasn't long before a massacre occurred. The Highland Squirrel Club alone killed 80,000 Red Squirrels during the first 30 years it operated! This continued up until the end of the 1920s."
