New symptoms :-(
« on: July 15, 2015, 10:25:27 PM »

I've developed some new symptoms

I'm at docs in the morning as my optician has sent me to have vascular work up, thyroid and MS tests because of this double vision (6th nerve palsy) and continued blurred vision, hospital said its age related but optician disagrees saying 'something' has caused it and although we may never find the cause, it's definitely not age related or menopause

Anyway, the last few weeks I've noticed increased hair thinning/loss and also:

Gritty eye when I wake up (the one with the palsy) and I can't open it straight away
Itchy scalp (nothing re hair care has changed to warrant this onset)
Burning sensation on scalp - comes on, goes, comes back etc
Sensation on my scalp like I've left sunglasses on top - again this sensation comes and goes
I've got a mouthful of ulcers and sore areas of gum - this is probably the Burning Mouth Syndrome

Does anyone else get any of these ?

No, but I didn't mention it, I didn't think it was anything to be honest to begin with.  I'll mention it today at GP, after about 10-15 mins it's fine until the next morning

Annie, re the gritty eye, I've got dry eyes, one worse than the other, funnily enough the one that I get a lot of eye pain in and around (not sure if connected). My eyes often feel gritty and as if they've got dust in them.  Interestingly DD was told she's got dry eyes, one worse than the other and its because her eyelids don't close properly when she's asleep. Eye drops have really helped both of us. Has your optician tested you for dry eyes?

Hope you get some answers soon.

Gp asked if I get any pain around the eye/temple (which I don't) but might be worth you mentioning that you do ?

I saw a different GP today, I liked her and she only works the days I don't which is good although huge wait as in weeks for any GP, they even don't have blood test slots for a few weeks so hopefully tomorrow I can take a form to the hospital for a wait your turn one

Anyway GP agrees with optician that there has to be a reason for this palsy , she doubts thyroid because I was tested March this year but is going for lipid and vascular work up and is referring me to a neurologist

She said to book another appt for when results are back to discuss them plus menopause, she did seem to question my meno symptoms considering I got the classics 16 years ago but not getting this time round especially as I've been on max oestrogen all these years and oestrogen levels have always been good (700s)

So we shall see

Hi Annie, I get the sensation on my scalp as if I've left my sunglasses on my head. So pleased that someone else has this too as I kept thinking it's my imagination. Haven't a clue what causes it!

It's bizarre, and sometimes it feels like I've got a headband on (haven't worn one since a little girl!)

I'm sure She said these are peripheral neuropathy symptoms

Oh well I'll see what / if the bloods reveal

I get this feeling in my head and also strange feelings in my face as if an insect is crawling up and down my face or over my scalp and its due to damage to the nerves in my neck because I have a prolasped disc and bad arthritis.

Hmmm that's interesting, I had (can't remember what chiropractor said) in my shoulder blade, after many appts it's gone now

When the burning happens on my scalp it's also gone to the top of my left ear !

And every evening (I notice it while I'm relaxed) a muscle or nerve in my right forearm twitches

Strange things going on !

I've had the twitchy muscle thing for years, can be anywhere on my body but its most noticeable on my legs and arms and face particularly eyelids. I remember looking it up when I first had it and scaring myself silly until I read its yet another symptom of chronic fatigue which I was eventually diagnosed with. It's been very noticeable since being peri and I now wonder if cfs and peri with its major hormone fluctuations go hand in hand.

My chiropractor insists I have CFS, although I haven't read a connection of double vision with it, but that doesn't really mean anything, my GP said they may never know the reason behind the nerve paralysis in my eye

Hi Annie - just want to say that double vision is one of the symptoms of M.E./CFS. If you scroll down this link to "Dr Ramsay's definition" it's mentioned although it's called diplopia http://www.meassociation.org.uk/about/the-symptoms-and-diagnosis-of-mecfs/

Also the muscle/nerve twitching is extremely common plus the odd burning sensations. I often get a feeling like my left leg is pressed against a hot radiator - especially when I'm tired. I was diagnosed with M.E. but after a couple of years with me reading everything I could about it I went back to the GP and the diagnosis was changed to fibro. The twitching and burning are common in both illnesses.

Yes Diplopia is the medical term, eye specialist said its sixth nerve palsy , I don't know if everyone with Diplopia means its sixth nerve palsy

What treatment do you have for your CFS/fibro ?

I don't think that double vision is always caused by sixth nerve palsy Annie. Have you been given a reason for it? Sorry if I haven't read all of your posts. I have read on line that in adult cases where no cause is found the outlook for a full recovery is very good.

I was given amitryptiline for the fibro when I was first diagnosed in 1996 which worked well in terms of restoring my sleep quite a lot and also gave some pain relief. I only took it for a short while though as it caused water retention. Since then I regulate what I do and over the years it has got better unless I forget and overdo things.  I also had an MRI scan as some of my skin sensations were not thought to be part of the fibro and this came back as possible benign MS - benign meaning that it would hopefully stay the same and not worsen. I did try Co-enzyme Q10 for a while which helped with the brain fog and poor memory.

The hospital eye clinic said it was sixth nerve palsy causing the double vision and originally optician thought that then immediately referred me.  Hospital tested diabetes (negative) then said its age related (I'm 48), optician said its not age related it's caused by a condition and said to go to GP for tests (thyroid, vascular work up and MS), doc agreed it's not age related and has sent a request for referral to a neurologist and agreed on the tests bar thyroid, she said that test came back normal in March
