| Full Story | Many women suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) which can be a cause of great discomfort and misery. While it has been recognised for some time that menopausal estrogen deficiency can increase the risk of urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women, the role of estrogen to reduce the risk of infections is not widely recognised nor promoted. Recently published guidelines from the American Urological Association have recommended the use of vaginal estrogen, stating that "Vaginal estrogen therapy with no contraindications should be recommended to perimenopausal and postmenopausal women with rUTIs to reduce the risk of future UTI".
