Tinnitus
« on: September 18, 2016, 04:27:30 PM »

Hi ladies,

Yay a post that's not about my bowels!
About 2 months ago I developed what I presume is tinnitus.  An annoying hiss in both years sometimes with heartbeat. I went to GP ( locum who I've never seen since ) and he immediately organised a MRI of my brain,  the appointment is on Tuesday.  I'm not sure I want to go - firstly is it really necessary for tinnitus?  Was it an overreaction on the part of the GP?  I've had enough scans to last a lifetime.  I don't want them to find anything else wrong with me!
Has anyone had a MRI of the head for tinnitus and what are your thoughts?
OH tells me just go and get it done but I'm just having second thoughts about it all,  the tinnitus is still there but comes and goes .
Opinions please xxx

Go for it! MRIs are not easy to get and worth having to rule things out 😀

Hi Groundhog

Tinnitus and a degree of left side hearing loss was one of my first peri sympyoms back in 2012

ENT diagnosed the slight hearing loss and ordered a MRI, nothing could be found and I didn't ask what he was looking for but he discharged me saying it's consistent with a head injury (I hadn't had a head injury)

Tinnitus remains to this day, all sorts of sounds too, if it's mild you can in time learn to ignore it but a month or 2 ago I woke up with really loud drumming, fortunately it only lasted a few days but was sending me insane

Please go for your MRI, it's been offered and might give the answer to your tinnitus

Tinnitus is a nuisance at best and life changing at worst.  For me it's a sudden awareness of noises in one or both ears.  Or a sudden whoosh which recedes after a few seconds.  Or the feeling of my heart beating deep in my ear when I lay on that side  ::)

Can be caused by listening to VERY LOUD MUSIC when younger  ;D.  Right now my R ear is whistling gently, almost background.

Do let us know how you get on!

I never did listen to loud music, i think mine purely is menopause related

Mines so changeable, pulsating, machinery, high pitch, low pitch, it even switches immediately from one ear to the other

Hi Groundhog,
I have been diagnosed with T since 2011 & I had an MRI & also a CT scan.
I have eustachian tube disfunction, & a mild upper attic retraction in 2 pockets which is something which could lead to cholesteatoma. Both scans were all clear but I go to the E.N.T. department every year for a hearing test & a look/see in both ears.

Please go for the scan, what have you got to lose? I'm sure it is just a precaution, you don't want to keep "wondering" what it could be everytime it becomes a nuisance do you.

As oestrogen levels drop muscles become lax, this may happen internally too.  I have to wriggle with my finger the right ear to 'un-bung' it several times a day!

I've had tinnitus for years - the hiss is always worse when I'm stressed or on certain medications. Antibiotics are really bad at increasing my ear sounds! I have humming, hissing, banging all sorts of sounds going on. It is really difficult sometimes. I also find that it has increased as the slight arthritis in my neck (whiplash injury) has worsened.

It is good that you have been offered an MRI scan but I must admit I've never heard of this before "just" for tinnitus without first being referred to a hearing specialist. NHS advice here http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Tinnitus/Pages/Diagnosis.aspx I assumed it is a part of getting older to be honest. My husband also suffers from this plus other male friends as well as female. It will be interesting to see how you get on.

Thanks all.  Yes Taz I too thought it was a bit of an over reaction but I will go.  It's booked now and I'm not afraid of the test - when I have the small bowel MRI I'm in the rube for over an hour! - I'm just scared at what they find!  Hopefully all will be ok.  It's 6.10 pm tomorrow - strange time but I'm not complaining.
Il let you all know xx

I developed pulsitile tinnitus at the start of perimeno in my left ear. Because there is a very minute chance that pulsitile tinnitus can be caused by a brain aneursym they should always do an mri brain scan to check that you don't have one of these about to go bang.  Don't worry its incredibly rare but its good that your Dr is not taking the chance.
I had a brain mri plus ultrasound of the carotid arteries of my neck and all was clear.
8 years later I still have 24/7 whooshing in time to my heartbeat in my left ear, sometimes its also accompanied by a sound like someone banging a drum in time to my heartbeat but this is on and off.
I don't really notice it unless I think of it so I had not noticed it at all today but as soon as I read your post and listened then sure enough its still there.
Glad your having the scan and please let me know how you get on.

Sorry ladies I didn't update the thread.
Well I had the MRI and I was told it was fine apart from this lesion.  Now I've seen 2 GPS and my ENT consultant and no one is concerned about the lesion so I have to forget about it.  No further forward with the tinnitus but I'm sort of adjusting I think.
Thank you for your comments ladies xx

Deja vous for me- your post about finding a lesion when having mri for tinnitus!
This is exactly what happened to me about 17 years ago. I have lots of white matter across the top of my brain. At the time I was told I might have or develop ms and i had to be rescanned every 2 years. Eventually after 10 years I was told that they now know that this white matter that looks like demylienation is found on huge amounts of scans and means nothing. Phew.  The scanning at the time I had my first one was ahead of their ability to know what it meant ::)

I still don't have ms so you can be very reassured if they told you to ignore it.
