We celebrate our Ruby wedding anniversary later this year I'm already getting anxious :-\
I know DH wants to go to France and we have the camper and friends over there …….. :-X
-
Would you go on the Tunnel or by Ferry?
-
Same anniversary for us in November CLKD - may I borrow your campervan please ;) (http://;))
No seriously, which aspect is causing you the most anxiety when you think about it? My hubby is also struggling with the thought of what we might do - he would rather ignore the whole occasion! PN x x
-
Oh aren't we good! and 'they' said it wouldn't last
general anxiety - we had a lovely sunny time in Dornie nearly 10 years ago so don't want to repeat that
Chunnel ……. no Channel for me
what if ……….. :-\
-
well we proved them all wrong ;) (http://;)) despite getting married after only 6 months after we met!
What if's are horrible, they can drive us to distraction and stop us doing so many lovely things. At least you will be in your campervan and not some strange hotel you know nothing about. France is lovely and really not too far away.
Do you have coping strategies that will help you?
Which month is your anniversary?
PN x x
-
I think we may go back to the artists village we went to last year.
If your not happy with going abroad CLKD then don't. It's your anniversary too and I'm sure you and hubby could come up with other ideas that suit you both. I have stopped trying to please everyone and then I'm just miserable and make myself unwell. It's a holiday for two not for one and misery for the other.
Ok got that off my chest ;D
Honeyb
X
-
:thankyou: ……….. no coping strategies other than medication as necessary
August :-*
-
That does not make for a happy holiday though.
Have you told hubby how you feel about this.
Honeyb
X
-
Not yet. I found a spa hotel in Derbyshire, a place we love to visit but it's a bit arty farty/New Age for us ::) …….. so we dismissed that.
-
Well don't expect him to read your mind. Men are really not good at picking up subtle hints and signs.
I still have Xmas santas.....how do I get rid ?
Honeyb
X
-
If you could choose where to go, with no-one influencing you, where would it be?
Would it be in the campervan or not?
PN x x
All my Christmas hats have gone HB, it happened automatically ( with the help of Emma, no doubt ;) (http://;)) )
-
We are thinking of Guernsey this year, but struggling to find a suitable package from our neck of the woods. Will have to juggle a bit I think.
-
Mum flew to Jersey when she was 83. Her First Passport, her first flight ……. all for a man that wasn't my Dad :-X ……..
I would LOVE to go to the Italian Lakes and Milan
Camper van and self catering mix
Anxiety won't allow it though :'(
I stopped expecting Himself to read my mind long ago ;D :D
-
We're thinking about France or Italy in the late spring. I'd always prefer France, for lots of different reasons, including the language which I love, while Hubby prefers Italy. Speaking of French, anyone know the 60's song "Mille Colombes", by Mireille Matthieu? Love it....
Other than that, nothing planned, holiday-wise, unless I call my 4-day London organ course in July a holiday........? (I don't think so!)
-
Oh - a Course in July ……… that reminds me of when I used to go to a weekend College for music interaction etc.; great fun!
-
They are fun, CLKD! Everyone hopes they stand up well alongside the others, but friendships can be made on these courses so it becomes a bit of a holiday too.
-
Love it Dulciana :)
Here's another one that reminds me of late sixties early seventies France
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8JOi1q5ugs
-
:-* …….. that velvety voice ;)
-
Watching Richard Wilson driving around Derbyshire, my Fav. county …… he's now tasting bakewell pudding …….
-
Hopefully, we will stay with my son and his wife in the USA this summer. She's expecting a baby in July. Before then, it would be nice to have a weekend away at least to make up for messing up our holiday last year by being ill. Not sure what or where or even if we can afford it. We do have a few days in London in May as my husband is going on a course and I am let loose, walking, retail therapy...... ;)
-
Got two holidays booked already :) A week in April and a fortnight in September - both to our favourite place, Fuerteventura. Staying in two different villas, the April one is the same one we stayed in last year but the September one is a new one for us - looks lovely though and has a very private garden and pool, good for the "all-over tan" ;)
-
Think we might give up on Guernsey, too much hassle to get there & expensive. Could do a week abroad for less. Now looking at self catering in Scotland.
-
The last thing we did on New Years Eve before switching off the computer was book flights to Orlando.
As both our kids are getting to the age they don't want to come on holiday with us anymore we thought we'd push the boat out one last time and do the whole Disney and Universal theme park holiday. We've done it before and I can't wait to go.
Just got to book a villa, car and park tickets.
Galadriel x
-
Ooh how exciting Galadriel, I love Orlando. Liked Islands of Adventure the most. When do you go?
-
We rented a cottage : "Kilimanjaro" : 9 years ago, not far from Dornie. Quiet. Comfortable. Over-looking Loch Long ;) - not far from the Isle of Skye and Plockton.
-
Daughter & partner saving up for Orlando, hopefully in next couple of years if his health issues allow it. Maybe think of going with them, maybe........
-
Booked Guernsey for our holiday tonight after lots of price checking all day.
-
OOOhhhh lovely !
-
Hoping to book one holiday this week.
Also hoping to get a caravan weekend/short break when hubby is feeling better. I think he deserves a wee treat away. Just him and me and the dog.
Honeyb
X
-
Definitely HB, you both deserve a wee break somewhere, oh & the dog. :)
-
Sounds good everyone!
Never heard of Orlando - what or where is it? Country, town, attraction? Just googled to find it's a city in Florida but not what goes on there?
We're going to SE Spain in April on a (self-guided) walking holiday in some mountains in a natural park - hoping to see lots of spring flowers and interesting birds of prey and other birds.... also to Cornwall camping (in VW) in the summer as we usually do, and a few other shorter VW trips, and a couple of music festivals...well fingers crossed it will all go ahead.....
Hurdity x :)
-
Do you not take your VW abroad? DH wants to ::) ………. when we go to Bird Fair at Rutland Water there are 100s of holiday companies ….. all enthusiastic and I didn't have panic attacks we would be going all over the place/s ::) particularly those trips to the Italian Lakes by train …….. however :-X
-
Hurdity, I am so envious of you with your vw! Is it a splitty or a bay, which colour? We had an orange and cream splitty in the 70's , aah, those were the days! I love them! PN x x
-
There are loads of firms hire them out on a weekly basis PN so you could revisit your youth.
My holiday booked and deposit payed tonight. Going at the end of June back to the artists village in Dumfries and Galloway. Really looking forward to it.
Honeyb
X
-
Hurdity, Orlando is in Florida. Mickey & friends live there. Great place for a holiday with kids, but involves miles & miles of walking. I lost 7 lbs there a few years back, just with walking.
-
However Honeybun there are restrictions and we found them too rigid. Having to get the 'van back to the company by 11.00 a.m. and not being able to collect until mid-afternoon meant 3 days of the holiday gone ::). There is a Company locally who have tarted up 2 VWs for weddings, they look cute driving round all ribboned up!
-
I agree CLKD. Does not make any sense at all.
Have you made a decision about where you are going and have you told hubby you don't want to go abroad yet.
Honeyb
x
-
We're going at the end of July/beginning of August as we have to be back in the UK for A-Level results day :o
I love Disney's Animal Kingdom park, and Typhoon Lagoon. We are also going to Universal Studios to see the new Harry Potter park - Diagon Alley. We were last there when Hogsmede and Hogwarts opened... I had to be dragged out of the park by two tired teenagers ;D
Like you CG, I lost weight walking last time too ;D
Galadriel x
-
We're doing a river cruise this year. Burgundy, River Rhone and Provence in mid June.
Can't wait.
-
We haven't talked any more Honeybun - no need to worry yet :-X ……. we will look at the weather during the year and see how I feel on trips out ……….
-
GD I believe Harry Potter world is even more fabulous now. Wands which "cast spells" the train & walking through the pillar at train station. Son and GF going to Florida at end of April & spending first couple of days at Universal.
-
Don't need to go to the US, Harry Potter was filmed at Alnwick Castle ;)
-
Yes, but the way in which Harry Potter world at Universal has been built is amazing. Holograms of characters hiding in walls, oh & the ride on the broomsticks is amazing. I panicked before going on it, thinking it might be like a roller coaster ride, which I hate. It was so well thought out. If I ever go back I'd go to Universal in a heartbeat. They are moving on faster than Disney.
-
Oh - could you get a broomstick for my Mum ;) :-X
-
Behave CLKD! ;D
-
:whist:
-
Make that two ;D
I told my mother today that I had booked a holiday and that the kids were coming with us. Her reaction was typical mother.......oh you will not get a rest.
What she fails to understand is we have fun together and they are going to be there because they want to be there.
What I haven't told her is I'm also going in April and September....hey ho this is going to cause such a lot of bother ::)
Honeyb
X
-
 ………..
-
She can't say you didn't tell her then. ;D
-
Well I've told her about one......up till now ;D
Honeyb
X
-
Well you have to pace yourself. ;)
-
Might just send a post card ::)
The thought of going all the way till June without a break from mothers is enough to drive me nuts so hence another holiday.....probably a caravan. I love a caravan.

GD I believe Harry Potter world is even more fabulous now. Wands which "cast spells" the train & walking through the pillar at train station. Son and GF going to Florida at end of April & spending first couple of days at Universal.
OMG... now I really can't wait. We have 191 days, 5 hours, and 11 minutes till take-off!!! :bouncing:
HB - my grandparents lived in Dumfries and Galloway - we spent many a school holiday there. My favourite place is Port Patrick :) I agree with drip-feeding your mum information ;)
rosedbud57 - Your cruise sounds lovely... plenty of opportunity for wine tasting? DH and I are looking at river cruises for next year.
Galadriel x
-
Not last night though Honeybun - rain on the roof, 'van tilting in the wind ;)
-
My niece got married in Harry Potter world in Florida, she is a huge HP fan, has been ever since she was little :) I'm not completely convinced she is legally married ???
-
our holiday this year is to west sussex. This is somewhere new for us so looking forward to seeing the likes of Brighton, Eastbourne, Worthing and Hastings :)
-
Did they dress up HP style too Judith57?
-
Babyjane - it's one of our favourite areas! Brighton and Lewes for antiques and good food, Rye for architecture - inland to Petworth/House …… long walks on the Brighton Prom. …….. there's an anqurium and the Pavilion for rainy days
-
I think the husband wants to go to Rye as it is where 'Mapp and Lucia' was filmed and he liked the look of it.
Would welcome any suggestions for good places to eat. No rush, not going until June :)
-
Hi Cubagirl, I wasn't there so have only seen the photos but she was wearing a ballerina style tutu and he was wearing an Hawaiian shirt - a slightly unconventional pair to say the least ???
Babyjane, Rye is lovely, exactly as it appeared in 'Mapp and Lucia'. I loved that, their horrible rictus grins :)
-
Do you not take your VW abroad? DH wants to ::)
We've only done so once in recent years went to France in 2007. All our VW trips and holiday are in this country. We now go abroad somewhere in Europe usually for 7-10 days in April but fly as it's quicker!
Hurdity, I am so envious of you with your vw! Is it a splitty or a bay, which colour? We had an orange and cream splitty in the 70's , aah, those were the days! I love them! PN x x
purplenanny - how lovely - we have more than one - I'll pm you and bore you with VW tales!
I'd love to go to Scotland again - on a big road trip in the VW but a long way from Devon and my husband isn't keen these days because of the weather ;D
My neighbour has been on several river cruises and loves them...
Hurdity x
-
We had 8 fab days up North in September - 4 nights on Loch Lomond and 4 near Craster - no midges, quiet camp-sites, good shower blocks ;) ………. and if the weather 'turns' 1 can drive back towards Devon until 1 finds the sunshine ;)
-
The weather is not bad up here all the time ;D. We had a lovely summer last year.
We can't go that far from home but luckily there are some lovely places just a few hours drive away. As long as I am away from the routine of home then I will be happy.
Honeyb
X
-
that's all it takes - a few miles down the road, different scenery, local shops ………
-
Have a Google of Kirkcudbright. That's where we are off too. It's very pretty and lots to do and see. Hubby loves it as its the artists village and has a close connection to the Glasgow boys. For somewhere so small it has a really good atmosphere.
Honeyb
X
-
I may be Scottish but never been to Kirkcudbright. Actually sadly lacking in visits to many parts of Scotland. I suggested a road trip to hubby, but he has bad memories of driving all over Scotland one year to satisfy his parents holiday requests and he had to pay for all the petrol, so I've never pushed him too much as a result.
-
Kirkkudbright is lovely and well worth a visit.
-
We never take our fuel charges into account. We are going away and it's part of the over-all costs - if we didn't go away we would probably drive out from here.
As for that trip Cubagirl, maybe book somewhere 'central' where there is good public transport? Get there, relax, take days out ….. that's what we do in Brighton/Lewes, settle into B&B and take the train or walk.
The C&C Club book arrived yesterday - giving Himself Big Ideas ::)
-
Holiday booked. Also planning an overnight trip to see brother & SIL. No doubt a few trips to Notts too over the year.
-
You can wave to me on the way past CG. Are you going to drive ?
Honeyb
x
-
If you were given a free ticket to anywhere in the World where would you go? [no anxiety, no sea sickness, no worries about flying]
I would go to the Italian Lakes for 2 months - end of March to enjoy the Spring!
-
I'd go to New Zealand or Hawaii.
-
That is exactly what Himself suggested ::)
-
One of my favourite places is the Ile de Re, a beautiful island close to La Rochelle. It is so pretty, every little village has a cycle rental shop and the island is perfect for cycling, cycle paths absolutely everywhere, beautiful beaches on the Atlantic and lovely French markets and restaurants. It was always a dream of mine to spend a whole summer there. When my husband was ill in hospital, one of the things that kept him going was his determination to go back there one more time and cycle along a particular path next to the oyster beds, we did manage to do it although he was very unwell.
-
Not driving HB. Making use of Club 55 tickets. Just waiting for SIL to get back to me with suitable dates. Got a Groupon voucher for hotel, which is just around the corner from them.
As for where I'd go, around the world if I could. Hubby desperate to do that one.
-
Ooo Groupon. Still to do that although I have looked. My trouble is I checkmthem out on trip advisor ;D
Go where I wanted....can I have a time travel machine please.
Cornwall and back to the Menack Theatre.
The Norfolk broads.....hubby and I spent two weeks in a windmill and had the best time.
Paris, where we went on honeymoon
Not very exciting but special to me.
Honeyb
X
-
The point is to be able to go without anxiety etc. ;) [have you read the Minack Chronicles Honeybun?]
-
I would love to be able to do those places without anxiety. Just getting there would be a huge challenge but hopefully one day.
No I haven't read it CLKD. I will have a look though as that place has a special place in my memories.
Got your holidays sorted out yet ?
Honeyb
X
-
Nope. Days out though …….. as and when . Derek Tange wrote the 'chronicles' ;) - I have almost all of them. 'Ambrose', 'A Gull on the Roof' ……..
-
Froze in Paris for my 50th birthday. ;D Hubby had to buy me big jumper. ::)
-
Do you still wear the jumper?
-
No it's long since been recycled. I was told to pack for equivalent of a coolish summer day as trip was a surprise, so had a lightweight cardi & light jacket. Photo of me at top of Eiffel Tower I look frozen! I was! Found a local market under railway line on way back to hotel.
-
I have just booked a spring week for me and hubby and the dog. Just a caravan but it's brand new and centrally heated.
Back to the Trossachs, I just love the area and could quite happily live there.
So that's the spring one booked and the summer one......now how about an autumn one.
I do know that my mother will have a fit so I'm not even going to tell her.....hey ho it's about time hubby and I started to put us first.....selfish or what ::)
Honeyb
X
-
AT LAST ;D ……… will you be sending your Mum a post card saying 'wish you were …… ' ;)
-
NOT selfish! It's what you should be doing. No one deserves a break more than you two and I doubt you have a selfish bone in your body! PN x x
-
How's the cruise hunt going PN. Seen anything really nice yet.
CLKD how about you and this big anniversary. What direction will the camper van take.
Honeyb
X
-
;D …… yours? ………. we haven't talked about it since. It will depend on the weather, where we haven't been in recent weeks ……….
-
Let me know and I will get the kettle on ;D
Do you fancy Scotland again?
Honeyb
X
-
Thanks for asking HB. I did a huge amount of research , got mindboggled and overwhelmed, panicked I might not be doing the right thing and left it :'( (http://:'()
I am feeling a bit more positive now so might take another look. After all that's happened to us I am very nervous about rocking the boat (no pun intended ;D (http://;D) )
PNx x
-
I do understand, you both have to be happy with what you choose. If hubby is happier closer to home then there are so many special places in this country.
Do something that you are both comfortable with. You don't want to go away and then worry that hubby will be alright because then it's not a holiday for you.
So difficult when health is involved. I always find out (quietly) where the nearest doctors is and have the number if I need it. Probably not necessary but it makes me feel more in control ::)
Good luck with your search....let us know.
Honeyb
X
-
Thanks HB
The cruise is something hubby has always fancied doing and he feels ok now to do it.
I am the problem! I am letting my nerves/fear get the better of me.
It is a very special anniversary for us so I really should just book the damn thing!
I will post when I do ;) (http://;)) don't hold your breath ;D (http://;D)
-
I fancied a cruise a few years back but DH decided that he would bored ::)
My sister loves cruising, places to go; no driving, food/drink to hand …….
How about trying a small one from Southampton - she went up the Rhine recently getting off and onto a coach to go places
Ours will be a special year too ;)
-
I could never be bored being cooked for, driven everywhere, a different place every day! Bliss
Yes we shared our anniversary news on a different thread CLKD ;) (http://;))
Its also a biggy birthday for me this year. So I guess I better get on with booking it! No going back then ::) (http://::))

Go on......you know you want to ;D

Cruising information in the Telegraph and Guardian today - if anyone wants me to post copies?
-
Ooh yes please :thankyou: (http://:thankyou:)
-
send a personal e-mail during the week with postal your addy on ;) and I'll find an envelope …….
-
Yay. Just booked a lovely villa with a pool near the Magic Kingdom in Orlando.
Better get working on my bikini body ;D
Galadriel x

Oh my - that means FLYING :o ::)

Well walking would take a while CLKD. ;D
Sounds great GD and if it's a private pool then no one will see a less than perfect bod ;D

Skinny dipping then …….

GD has two teenagers CLKD......do you want then to disown the parents :o
Honeyb
X
-
It's 1 way of getting to spend their Inheritance ;)
-
We have skinny dipped before when they were little and used to have bedtimes much earlier than ours - no neighbours either!
There will be no skinny dipping this time as it's not so secluded and the teenagers are generally still awake when we go to bed ::)
That said - an all-over tan can be visually slimming ;D
Galadriel x

I don't think my two would ever recover from the thought or the shock ;D
Honeyb

 a form of bribery then …….. 'If you don't …… ' :whist:
-
:bang: (http://:bang:) Just checked the passports today - hubby's runs out next month >:( (http://>:()
Why are things never straightforward!
-
:o ……… trip to the Passport Office then?
-
PN - you can renew on line now. We did this for DD as hers runs out before we go on holiday. You just need to send the signed print-off and the passport - recommend doing Track and Trace. The current turn-around time is 3 weeks :)
Galadriel x
-
Last time we needed passports renewing we used the Post Office passport service.
Having first identified the Post Offices that did this function, we got the forms and filled them in. Next, we then took them to the PO where they checked they were completed correctly, they also did the photos there and then. The whole lot was given a reference number and sent to the Passport Office.
They quoted 3 weeks to us too, but we actually got them back in 2 weeks.
It was a really good service, the checking at the post office was thorough and helpful.
-
:thankyou:
-
Thanks Galadriel and Limpy, very grateful. I have printed the form off , just need to get photos now.
I do hope they send the old one back as it is something I would like to keep for sentimental reasons.
No trip to the passport office needed CLKD, thank goodness!
Also renewed the E111 health card, also online. I foolishly fell for a scam website last year and was charged. I did get the money back after a long fight. Got the correct website this time and it is free.
:thankyou: (http://:thankyou:)PN x x
-
Off you go then - photos?
-
We get our old ones back. Corner cut off but least you can keep them. X
-
I don't know if I would want my photo though :D
I booked a night away in the camper for mid-March …..
-
I go six weeks on Saturday......not that I'm counting ;D
Honeyb
X
-
Packed yet ;D
-
Not quite yet but give me a week or two.
I know it's early and the weather may be rubbish but its a break and I cant wait.
Are you going far CLKD ?
Honeyb
X
-
Photos done. Passport posted off
Where you off to CLKD and HB?
-
Peterborough Antiques Fair - about an hour's drive away and a very good camp site ;)
-
Woolacombe Beach voted in the top 5 in Europe
-
Is that for cleanliness CLKD or lots of things?
I wasn't that far from there on my mini-hol with my mum, but a bit further round in the very dramatic bit where (Devon) Exmoor just drops into the sea!
Good camp-sites are worth finding :)
Hurdity x
-
I didn't read the article ::) …….. we haven't been that far South for years.
-
It's for the whole experience I think. Top of UK beaches and fourth in European ones. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/uk/southwestengland/11419023/Woolacombe-Devon-named-top-five-beach-in-Europe-by-TripAdvisor.html
You should go CLKD - it's such a special area.
Taz x
-
I know Taz - so many places to visit, too little time ;)
How many weeks Honeybun :)
-
You could pop down for the day CLKD - like I do - well I haven't lately but must get back into doing that ;D
Taz x
-
Five weeks on Saturday CLKD ;D
Honeyb
x
-
;D we don't 'pop' anywhere we proceed in a ladylike fashion :D - we are too far from the Coast for it to be a day trip unless we get up very very early and home very late :'(
-
I am so upset! And very cross!
Hubby's passport came today, really quick.
But...... his old one wasn't returned. I thought they sent them back? I even put a message on it asking for its return :bang: (http://:bang:)
Really wanted to keep it for special reasons :( (http://:()
-
Will it come via separate delivery?
-
I think the old passport will be returned separately, as CLKD suggests.
-
;D we don't 'pop' anywhere we proceed in a ladylike fashion :D - we are too far from the Coast for it to be a day trip unless we get up very very early and home very late :'(
That's what I do! It's a 400 mile round trip but.. it's worth it. ;D
Taz x
-
Oh I do hope it comes. Would have been cheaper to put in same envelope though! Hopefully tomorrow then :-\ (http://:-\)
-
I can't get out of bed too early these days ;) - which is where the camper will prove it's worth during the warmer weather 8)
-
I think I would like a camper van, maybe in a few years. Would love just to travel for few days.
-
we were 6 years looking for ours - then we had a gap of 18 months before buying :bounce:
-
When friends of mine were wondering whether to buy one or not they hired one for two weeks before making their minds up Millykin.
Taz x
-
That would be a better idea in case I didn't enjoy :D
-
However: do read the Terms and Conditions before hiring - we thought about it but couldn't pick up the 'van until mid-afternoon and it had to be returned by 11.00 a.m. on the last day. It had to be hoovered completely and the fuel tank filled. So in a 7 day holiday that's at least 3 that can't be used! the first when picking it up from the Hire Company; then if 1 goes a long way a day is lost travelling back home in order to service/clean it before taking it back ……
Also it's not always easy to find a pitch in high season …… so booking ahead is important. We decided to 'go for it' as campers have a good re-sale value ;)
-
Milly....if you watch Groupon, there are special come up for camper vans. There is a place near us...PM me.
As CLKD says the pick up and return are not ideal but it would still give you an idea of whether you would like it.
My sister did this many years ago. What put her off was ...they got to the campsite...unpacked...got the awning up and the deckchairs out...next day kids wanted to swim in the pool in the next town....they wanted a run out....pack the whole lot up before they could move....drive to the next town and look for a space to park.... ;D...not many of them.
Then they considered a static van....going shares with us....site fees are just scary although I have always wanted one of those....hubby won't even consider it...he tells me I can have so many weeks away in a caravan for less than we would pay in site fees......guess what I'm staying in in five weeks...yep a caravan....central heating and double glazing though ;D
Honeyb

-
::) …… it's OK if you like spending holidays in the same area. We've done that as well as travelling around the UK …...
-
The passport office have confirmed my old passport should be sent within one week of receiving the new one. Phew! Thanks ladies x x
-
Thought they would send it separate delivery as it's no longer important ;)
-
They do send new one in a separate delivery - with us it wan't secure or signed for, even though that is what we'd paid for.......
-
Same here Limpy and I also paid the extra! >:( (http://>:()
-
I've a campervan addiction - bought my first VW camper in 2010 and it's bankrupted me ever since. I looooove being able to just jump in and go without having to pack, I just need fresh milk and clothing. The VW scene is good fun too, lots of festivals that are cheap as chips but with good company and entertainment. The only downside was getting to know all the AA / RAC men by name, nearly every trip ended up with a return journey on the back of a flat bed truck after a wait on a hard shoulder. :-\
I'm hoping to swap to a newer model this year, not quite the same charm but I'm looking forward to being able to drive without trying to diagnose the latest smoke or smell from the engine....
GG x
-
;D ….. my b in Law has his head under the bonnet of his VW often! which is why we went for something completely different …… I have a basket of dried foods/soups and another basket of basic clothing ready to be lifted into the 'van 10 mins. before we go. I would like something a little larger but our Hyundai model fits in the garage.
I know someone who is selling a camper but not a VW ;)

Reading this thread backwards (doh) and have just seen the post about E111 cards.... Please please don't use this instead of travel insurance but as well as. I run a holiday organisation and a number of people have fallen foul of this, one parent's child had an accident in France and it ended up costing her nearly £2k with things not covered. That included some treatment, but also incidentals like her extra accommodation so she could stay out with her son while he was in hospital, tickets to come home a shorter route later and a host of other things she hadn't thought of. For the sake of £20 or so on travel insurance she was kicking herself.
CLKD I was tempted to buy a vintage folding caravan last year whilst my VW was off road for a while and it's lovely, but just not the same. It'll be sold again this summer. I'm hoping to find a VW T5 (new van) somewhere this year and get it converted to my own spec - I'd give up my car if I had a decent van. I've had to promise my kids though that there'd be no flowers, my current van has a vinyl wrap covered with daisies - making me even more embarrassing for my teens than normal apparently ;D
GG x
-
When we were looking - it took 6 years to decide ;D - we went to Hillside in Derby who do T5 conversions! the only reason we didn't buy is because the handbrake was low - DH at 6ft had difficulty in reaching it so me at 5 nowt had no chance! They were really helpful and we went round the Workshop and I wanted the Red One ;D …….. the leisure battery was housed under the driver's seat which made it higher.
We bought lots of motorhome magazines. Lots and lots and ::) ………..
Is your business UK based or World wide ? How exciting!
-
Six years? I wish I'd done my homework that well, I saw I bought (egged on by the kids). A good buy really but anything that's so old is bound to come with problems...the reason we're all here in fact ;D
My business is mainly European, we arrange holidays for single parent families from camping through to 5 star all inclusive Med trips or Lapland adventures. Good fun, great people but sooo time intensive. The benefit of working for yourself is you can work as long as you want for as little as you want, and those 3am insomnia spots are put to good use :)
Where do you head to in your camper? I'm always looking for new sites...

We usually go to Croatia but cant afford it this year (well not at the moment), so are considering Tunisia as it is very very cheap.
Has anyone any tips on a good, cheap hotel & a nice area as we know very little about the place.
We want somewhere quiet that is not all for young families.
Thanks x
-
Yasmine Hammamet has some good hotels, we use the Iberostar Averroes (right on the beach) or the Belisaire across the road. Cheap and if you go out of school holidays they shouldn't be too overrun.
Croatia is one of my favourites, but the money just doesn't go as far.
Have you considered Bulgaria at all? We've been skiing there last week and it was so cheap! For summer resorts I'd suggest Nessebar or Sozopol, there are some good, all inclusive hotels available.
GG x
-
Bulgaria is up and coming apparently.
We go across the UK in our camper - using C&CC sites or small private fields with basic facilities. It is useful for over-nighters to antique fairs etc..

CLKD - Do you think you could cope with taking the camper to France?
You wouldn't need to fly, could use a ferry or the chunnel.......
-
Nope :'( - lots of people do, they buy left-hand drive vehicles and spend British Winters in Spain ……… I had to come home from Lewes in October which shook me to the core …….. I have to be 5 hours from home.
-
Well at least you've tried CLKD, Lewes ain't close. :great:
-
:thankyou: I had been several times. But it's knocked my confidence, now every time I think of returning I get the collywobbles :-X
It's an area we love to visit too.
-
A five hour radius gives you plenty of choice and you enjoyed your Scottish week last year.
So you don't go abroad....who cares...I don go either ::)
Honeyb
X
-
Honeyb is right CLKD, you DID get up to Scotland last year.
I seem to remember you enjoyed that.
-
:thank you: We did. That was in Sept. and I visited a family friend not seen since 1991: B4 the panic in Lewes ……. so could go back to Scotland/Northumbria without problems [probably] but down South :-\ and I know that's logical in case panic takes over again but it's restrictive :bang: ……. little steps ;)
-
CLKD - It will be nice to go back North again.
That's probably enough to be thinking about for now.
-
I agree. 2-morrow is another day ;)

Many thanks for the info GG, I shall do a bit of searching over the coming weeks.
-
We are due to go to on our holiday in 5 weeks time been trying not to think about it.
God hope I feel more settled than I have been :-\
It doesn't bare thinking about ,keep trying to rationalize it by saying might as well be in the sun as here ,at least will be with my DH every day so that's a positive :)
-
I'm sure you'll enjoy it dazned - nothing like being able to relax for making everything seem rosier - and think of all that vitamin D too!
Now you mention it have just looked at the date and realised that we are going away in just over 5 weeks too, so getting excited at the very thought :)
If it makes you feel any better I still (even at my age!) always worry about going away even though I want to, but always love it once I'm away :)
Hurdity x
-
Normal I love being away :)
Just hope all this anxiety and feeling like s...t settles down soon ! It's no where near as bad as it was last week though.
Fingers crossed where you off to ,we are going to Paphos which we do every year .x
-
Sounds lovely - we're going to Spain sort of East in the mountains near Alicante I think - a walking holiday (self-guided) hoping to see lots of wild flowers and interesting birds!
Hurdity x
-
Sounds far to energetic for me ! ;D
Good on you though. First time we will be trying a villa so hopeful putting the pool lounger through its paces ;D
-
I love holidays once I'm home - then I know if I've enjoyed myself ;)
-
Robson Green is in one of my fav. places: Warkworth Castle :-* ……. note to self - book more holidays :D
-
Anybody been to Pisa area?
-
Nope - apparently it leans a bit ;)
-
I love holidays once I'm home - then I know if I've enjoyed myself ;)
I recognise that feeling :)
I travel widely and yet there's definitely no place like home. Even more so in spring time, I'm sat working whilst looking out onto the crocuses and snow drops coming through and the sun trying to poke through. England really is quite pretty.
GG X

Hurdity - where'd you go ?

Three weeks now. ;D

I've been to Pisa littleminnie, although it was a few years ago.
Lovely town but as you can imagine very touristy.
Did not get to go up the tower as it was before they had halted the tilt, so it was closed.

Packed yet Honeybun :D
-
Resisting the urge CLKD ;D
Are you not off in the van for a couple of nights around Easter. ?
My son is off to Belfast tomorrow....he is getting about these days but not sure you could call it a holiday ::).....it's with work.

Glad DS has a job! it's the way to see the World!
We have an over-nighter at the end of the month ……. of course Mothering Sunday soon so we will be off on our Duty Visit from Thursday …. followed shortly by Easter ……. DH has been looking for camp sites around Whitby ;)
-
We're away for an overnight next weekend, visiting brother & SIL.
Few weeks later Nottingham, though not much of a holiday as babysitting the girls. Last two Easters have been pretty £&@#, so hopefully this one will be event free. Daughter is praying for a peaceful one!
-
Third time lucky CG, Easter Eggs and a ...ummm...relaxing time ;D
Oh heck Mother's Day....need to get that sorted. Not got a clue ::)
Whitby, I was there when I was about 14. NIce part of the country.

We're planning a trip to Paris fairly soon, possibly to include some organ adventures! (Fingers ever so tightly crossed!) ::)
-
Will be interesting to see how I cope with anxiety this time round.
-
Do you think the medication have helped up to now CG?
-
>wave<
In case I forget [as if ::) ] - we are off on Thursday (2-morrow) to do a Duty Visit as Mothering Sunday approaches ……. not much inter-net connection in that area so you may not hear from me until Sun/Monday ………
Off to choose a 'fixed grin' :-X :D
-
Littleminnie, yes it has helped. It is a low dose compared to most, but it has mainly stopped the knots/butterflies in my tum & feeling on edge. I'd got to a point where I thought I'd developed more food intolerances, got tests done back in Oct/Nov. Was given colpermin which made me very nauseous. Roll on January, was totally fed up trying to figure out why my tummy was always churning. Felt generally jittery too, so spoke with GP. Got Citalopram. Now all my tummy problems have disappeared :) Only get occasional anxiety blips, but I am managing to cope with them thanks to tablets and remembering to slow down my breathing through relaxation techniques.

Off to Peterborough Antiques Fair on Friday - site booked, camper cleaned out, washed: food sorted; weather ordered ;) - back sometime Sat. afternoon. Hopefully anxiety will STAY AWAY :bang: as we are meeting friends on Friday evening.
-
I presume you have a heater in it CLKD? We don't venture out in ours until first weekend in May - but our van is old school, very small and cold - no room to swing a cat! (That's a very strange saying? Why would anyone do such a thing?)
Have a good time :)
Hurdity x
-
'cat of nine tails' I think ;)
The heater is run off the diesal engine with a gauge so that we don't run out and leave us stranded on site! We have sleeping bags that are thick down to -40 ;) ………. ours is a Hyundai people carrier conversion so set up for most weather situations.
-
Easter approaches >:( ……. :P so we will be 'out of range' for several days, we plan to travel on Thursday. Anxiety allowing :-\

Good luck CLKD ,best foot forwards and all that !
When will you be back ,we'll miss you !
Hopefully the weather will stay fine and can get out with your mum better than being enclosed with her maybe, distractions etc. ;)

Our 2015 holiday is at the start of June :).
I am going to ask the GP if he can give me anything temporary to get me through the journey there and back :-\.
I need something to get me through a large, busy wedding in September too, to stop me dreading it and ending up not going and letting loved ones down. Sorry, not holiday related, will make another thread.

Count down has begun for our main holiday leaving on Wed,usually pack Tuesday evening but with my meno head will have start at weekend when hubby can help else all sorts will be forgotten! As long as I've got all my medication I don't really care ! ;D
I will take everything for every possibility,hrt,Ads,diazepam,antihistamines,paracetamol,mossie repellent,B12 vit,D3vit,blood pressure tabs,water tabs,statins,Zopiclone, so that's one case packed ! ;D
Anyone else think of anything ?
-
Dazned, kitchen sink xxx
-
Dazned - how about
Sunscreen, after sun milk or anything to ease sunburn, Imodium, Rennies, rehydration salts, plasters, Savlon or similar
-
Bubble bath ::)
-
Thanks Limpy and CLKD I can buy those sort of things there as they weigh quite a bit cumulatively !
Hopefully don't need the kitchen sink Claireylou as the villa should have one ! Mind you one never knows !
-
Take printed prescription of all your meds just in case you're stopped anywhere.
-
Oh do I need that, didn't know ! Well haven't got a prescription for some of it ,diazepam not on repeat and hrt was a prescription from private gynecologist so no copy of that either !
But they'll have to kill me first to take it away ! >:(
-
In that case take containers you received your meds in. Most times security don't bother, but best to be safe.
-
Hope you have a lovely holiday
I got stopped at the airport scanner with my epipen but luckily the box had my sticker on from the docs but this year I'll get a letter to go with it xx
-
Thanks Cubagirl I'll do that .

My son has to carry a letter with him for his meds.

Heavens dazned - you'll be rattling with that lot!!! Do really take all of those things?!!!
Don't forget indigestion tablets - I always take a few of those just in case (too much rich food and alcohol).
Oh I see Limpy has already suggested these - and Immodium - I always take this with me too!!
Where are you going? We're away then too but the weather doesn't look too brilliant where we are going (Spain).
Hurdity x
-
We are off to Cyprus ! Hopefully it should be sunny :)
I take estrogen, water tablet, blood pressure tab in mornings
Vit B12 and D3 and statin at night with meal ( probably stop D3 as hopefully the sun should now do it for me )
Bedtime AD.
Diazepam is only for emergency in case anxiety, palps, etc break through, hopefully won't need it!
Same goes for the Zopiclone, swapped that for the ADs :-\
Antihistamines are only incase I get bitten
So it's 7 in total, but 2 are vitamins. Hopefully this new regime works out then I will try stopping ADs.
The joys of all this meno lark ! X

When do you fly of to Spain Hurdity ?
We go silly o'clock weds morning .

I love going to cyprus, whereabouts are you going?
-
Peyia,near Paphos.
-
We go to paphos quite a lot, stay in universal area. We live in the country at home and need the car to go anywhere so we like the fact we can walk to either harbour area or up to the old town.
I was there at new year and it was dreadful got a photo of hailstones sitting on the outdoor furniture. went back in feb and it mostly rained just at night time which was good.
Enjoy your holiday the temp seems to steady around 20/22 most days, perfect for walking about.
-
We will have a car as out of the way a bit,got a villa out by the Sea caves. We go every year at this time. We got married at St.Paul pillar church if you know it ,behind Debenhams. Yes it should be warm ,don't do real heat. First time of having a villa so Glad we not in hotel this time as had a rough patch of late so if I don't feel like being around people I don't have to,likewise with eating.Do you always stay in same area? Where do you like to eat out ?
-
Hi we bought our own place in universal just over a year ago. Like you we were fed up of hotels and wanted to set up a base there for future plans.
I know st pauls pillar, we often walk thru there en route to the harbour etc. Our favourite bar is at lido area is called Alea bar very chilled, great staff, drinks and cafe bar food.
In the old town we like Boulevard Bistro as it great for watching locals driving about the girl that is always there is so nice and the food is presented really well. For fantastic food and views over the whole of Paphos you cant beat Muse.
As for restaurants we like Almond Tree we spent new years eve there and had a fab night. Also Zaza which is up a side street near alexander the great hotel the food is good and the couple who own it are very pleasant.
Oh all this talk makes me wNt to go back now. Lol

We also go to the Windmill just behind St. Paul's,traditional family owned ,try it if you get the chance. We have been going for 15 years,we too could have bought a place by now ! ;D
Not sure where Universal area is ?
As we will be out by Sea caves we will be trying out some new restaurants up that end as well as our favourite s . There is also a lovely restaurant by Adonis waterfalls, all you can hear is goat bells it's so peaceful in the mountains.

Glad you had a lovely break
We experienced tremors in Zante, I was on the balcony and my chair moved, thought OH was rearranging furniture inside ! But he was laying on a really heavy bed and thought it was next door, sounded like furniture being dragged along marble floor
A few miles away was my son and his friends, his friend was on a plastic chair on the balcony and the Tremor made his chair snap and he fell to the floor !

5 weeks on Thursday we go away :)

Glad you were safe on your holidays Annie0710
Enjoy yours Babyjane !

Where you off to ?

Hurdity how was your holiday ? 8)

Fantastic thanks for asking dazned! Walked nearly 80 miles in 8 days - some sunshine but not too hot, beautiful mountains, birds, flowers, great food and wine, lots of old ruins in the hills and almond trees, olives and cherry - these were in blossom. Lovely old villages clustered on the hillsides and lots of clanging bells ( kept us awake a bit!). Glad your was good too. Reality does hit quickly doesn't it but great to get away! Back here to glorious sunshine :sunny: for a week so that was a bonus! We are away again at w/e....

We are going to West Sussex, on the South Coast. We have never been to that part of the country before.

Nowhere very exciting! Driving up to Leics (miles away), camping at some godforsaken field and then driving to a stately home (in Leicesterhire) where there is a classic car show, parking up by the river and chilling out and then driving back to SW on Monday!

Glad you had a lovely, if short, holiday GHG. I bet it's been a shock to come home to cooler weather :o
CKLD - go you! Enjoy your days out with DH. Glad to know you are ok :D
I can't wait to go on holiday - just seen an article on the Beeb about needing to get some sort of 'code' just before we go to US so we can collect the hire car. Seems as though the paper part of the driving license is being phased out in early June... DVLA kept that one quiet!!! ::)

We plan to visit Brighton as I have never been there, husband has.
One week beginning of June, Worthing area :-)
-
Brighton - prepared to be amazed ;)
The advice from the Foreign Office is to continue carrying the whole of the UK Passport when abroad. This saves having to try to explain if stopped in the language of the country one is travelling in ;)
I had 4 lovely days last week without anxiety ………. :bounce: even DH noticed ;)

Hi Dyan wave
-
The DVLA's plans to scrap the paper part of the UK driving licence could cause chaos for people hiring cars abroad this summer, motoring groups have warned.
From June 8, UK drivers will be obliged to carry only their photocard licences. All the additional information currently held on the paper counterpart driving licence, including any points or endorsements, will be held on the DVLA's own database and will only be able to be checked online, by phone or by post.
If you want to hire a car, holidaymakers will have to register with the DVLA in advance by logging on to the DVLA website, entering their driving licence number and obtaining a code that they can then give to the car hire company instead of the paper driving licence.
However, that code is only valid for 72 hours so if you aren't picking up a hire car as soon as you get to the airport, you might have to log onto the website while you're on holiday to get a new code.
Motorists will also be able to download a printable PDF containing their driving history, but with the changes not widely publicised, it is not yet known how many car hire companies will accept this, if at all.
Mark Bower, of the car hire insurance website MoneyMaxim, told the Daily Mail that this could cause huge problems for holidaymakers visiting Europe: “Most people are simply unaware that these changes are on the way – and it is not just renters,†he said.
“I spoke to one big car hire firm in Portugal this week and they knew nothing of the changes. Six weeks away from implementation, the whole thing is very muddled.
“It is another thing you have to remember to do just before departure. Or you can do it at the desk with your smartphone if you can remember the website address, don't mind the data roaming charges, can remember your national insurance number and are impervious to the long queue developing behind you.â€
A DVLA spokesperson said: “There is up-to-date information on the website and we are working closely with the industry to ensure that their systems and processes are ready for the changes.â€
-
Never knew that was happening. So when are they planning on telling us drivers? Surely need to inform everyone by post or it will be utter chaos. Son had that bit stolen with his bag a few weeks back & he's been worried about it ever since.
-
It's been in the National Press for a while particularly in the car supplements at weekends! I don't even know where my Dirving Licence is ::)
-
I asked hubby who is more clued up in such things. Nope, he didn't know either. He doesn't read car supplements as he's not planning on buying a car.

Not Whitby but nearer Edinburgh. Can I help?

Don't live near Whitby, CLKD, but have taken more holidays and day trips in the area than I've had hot dinners! Tell us what you need to know.

Disneyland is booked! Just need to book Premier Inn for each direction (it's a long drive from Leeds to Paris in one day!), and the Shuttle crossings (don't do ferries). And we're going to go to Duxford on the way - sooooo looking forward to it. :) :)
-
Well Done Scampi! how long are you away for?
Looking for camp sites near Whitby - need to be able to walk into the town rather than using public transport ::) 1st half of the holiday near Huddersfield/Birds Edge is booked - site we used 12 months ago with lots of walking/sitting and a very good farm ice-cream parlour ;)

How far would you be prepared to walk CLKD? We saw one about five miles from Whitby last time we were there. It was Midwood or Middlewood - something like that.

I haven't had a proper holiday for a couple of years so I've been looking around to see if I could afford a cottage/apartment for a week in the school summer holidays. The prices are ludicrous!! Up to £1200 for a two bedroom apartment! The week before the summer holidays, of course, things are up to £300 a week cheaper. It's not like I earn loads of money being a teaching assistant and out of the thirteen weeks holiday a year off school I only get paid for four of them. Makes me so annoyed although I do love the thirteen weeks off.
Taz x

And if families can't afford the extortionate prices during holidays and decide to take children out of school for a week then they get fined. B***dy stupid.
We took our two out a few times, not to avoid the prices as Scottish holidays are different but because my hubby worked abroad a lot of the time and he couldn't always get time off during school holidays.
Ok rant over.
Have you thought about a caravan on a small site Taz. We did that just before Easter and it was really lovely. Did not have to make do and mend with anything.

It makes me angry too when prices alter. It's the same on camp sites but paying more doesn't give me any more than if I went at a different time of year :bang: - can't even guarantee the weather :-X
-
Not easy for teaching staff or parents though. At least we have a choice CLKD.

Even the caravan prices are high in the holidays in my favourite place. I've just had a look and it's £800 for a van that sleeps four (bit small) or £1,065 for one that sleeps six!! Much cheaper to go abroad! A special offer's just come up - a van that sleeps for "only" £959.00 ;D
Taz x
-
Heavens Taz that's a bit steep for a van. Maybe need to find another place to go. Have you looked at the Owners Direct site. They can be a weeny bit cheaper.
We had a brand new van....first people in it ...in the Trossachs for....£250. Guess where I'm heading back to later this year.

-
Was that in the summer holidays honeyb? I don't want to go anywhere else though but will check out the Owners Direct site although I would prefer an apartment to a caravan. I'm thinking of going in October instead. Prices drop by around £300 which is more affordable.
Taz x
-
The best way of getting affordable holidays (overseas at least) is to book flights as soon as these are released. Flights are priced in bands so the cheapest seats on the aircraft are always the first 20 or so, then they go up for the next 20, then up again. We always secure our flights as soon as the schedules are released, that's anywhere from 11 months before for a scheduled airline like BA, to around 6 months for Easyjet.
The same is also happening with hotel rooms, we have an allocation of rooms we bought back in September - these are nearly 50% higher in price now...
It's often difficult to know what our plans are a year ahead, but once you get into the swing of planning in advance, it does save you a fortune as well as give you the widest choice of accommodation.
GG x
-
Thanks GG - I never go abroad though. When booking holidays in this country it doesn't make any difference how far ahead you book as the prices are already fixed based on the next year's school holiday dates.
I've checked out the Owners Direct site and got all excited when it said £273!! Then I realised it was per night...
Taz x ;D
-
It was just before Easter Taz but for Sept and October it goes up about £150 which is still reasonable for what we got.
Maybe you should head north a bit as its much cheaper I think.

It's just the way prices jump during school holidays that gets me. Not sure that going somewhere else would be the same. Because I go on my own I do tend to relax better when I'm in my well known place. Did stay in Whitby a couple of times but that was expensive too. I'll just have to change my job!

In recent years our holidays have been late August/early September to get cheaper rates. However, we're going earlier this year as it was cheaper than our usual time. Holidays during the summer used to be a nightmare when our kids were little. Hubby was in police so juggling that in with school holidays was tricky. We did a lot of self catering in those days at fairly short notice. Now you have to book quite far in advance.
-
DH don't argue about much but these hikes in price annoy me! but he says that it's supply and demand and in fact, booking out of season is the discounted rate :-\
One way of booking is to go directly to the owner of the property ;) not through an Agency!
-
11 weeks until my holiday, not that I'm counting. ;)
-
Where are you going CG?
-
Guernsey littleminnie. Went 27 years ago, but we're going a bit more upmarket this time. Last time kids were young & we went to opposite side of island which had a great beach for them to play on.
-
Owners Direct are not cheap at all!! I've booked a week through them over Christmas as it is my husband's 70th then and it was eye-wateringly expensive - as any holiday cottages. Absolutely no difference in price - well not that would make any difference! I think the whole holiday cott thing is outrageous -and what people expect for their money too. Often way more than hotels. I'm going to come over all old now...when I was little we used to go on hols to farm cottages - from the farm holiday guide - and they were really cheap. Some didn't have water ( a pump). Defo no central heating ( we're talking 1960's here). Mismatched crockery. We took our own sheets etc, did our own cleaning, and they were really really cheap - and we had a fantastic time. Lots of happy memories. Everything is too sophisticated and plush nowadays - and those that profess back to basics simplicity, are even more expensive. Even camping is ridiculous (cost-wise) as everyone want s unlimited hot showers every single day even when on holiday, and people want electricity to power everything!!!!!!!!!!! Bah humbug! What happened to the simple pleasures in life and basic holidays?!
Hurdity x
-
I have done Owners Direct more than once and found them to be the cheaper option but it was in Scotland so maybe that's the difference.
I really think that we must be a good deal cheaper up here.
My sis is on holiday in Pitlochry for a week in August for just under £500. My daughter is going to St Andrews for a week in the summer and again just around the £500 mark. Both lovely cottages in beautiful locations.
Guess it all depends on where you want to go.
I was prepared to make do a bit years ago but not now. Why have a week away to something less than you have at home. I like my comforts these days. Must be getting old ::)

We pay £37.00 per year for C&CC Club. On top of that we pay site fees (from £12.50 per night) which gives us hot showers 24/7, flush loos, a small shop, electric hook-up if necessary. Some sites are more basic, others have Clubs/pools/games rooms …….. we haven't rented a cottage for a few years : (never paid more than £300.00 a week and I wouldn't pay extra for the :scottie:) : but always went directly to the owner and not via an agency. I would only book if linen was provided! although we took our own towels. Sometimes shower gel/washing up liquid was there, other times not ::)
We have used B&Bs or Hotels in recent years which usually charge around £50.00 per night for en-suite and breakfast.
-
We use VRBO, Airbnb, Holidays Lettings. Used them about about a dozen times now, never had a problem. Only used them for holidays abroad though, don't usually holiday in the UK anymore.

trying to work out where we can go for some sunshine for a week in July before the school holidays. Been googling for hours but of course everything nice has gone (surprise!). I think we might be in for one of those dismal grey summers in the UK.

Have a look at static.caravan.co.uk - I used it a couple of years ago to take my Mum away for a few days and we had a lovely van in Lowestoft, very well equipped and quite reasonable.
We use Owners Direct a lot, rented three times in Fuerteventura now and always had good experiences and prices a lot lower than some of the hotels. Used it here as well but it was a bungalow out of season so quite cheap compared to some.
I've just booked us a 4 day/3 night break in Aldeburgh staying on a camp-site. It's really a static van place but they also accept tourers. The pitches are more European style, fully serviced - water supply, waste drainage, lights all on your own pitch and an all inc price (to include awnings/dogs) of £34 per night. We're going the day after hubbys birthday as a treat for him - he will mostly be drinking Adnams, his favourite tipple :)

Hello everybody, we are back from our holiday week in Littlehampton. We were very lucky indeed with the weather, it was summer all week :)

Littlehampton - where else did you visit? There are so many lovely places here …….. un-packed yet ;)

Long weekend booked for beginning September in Symmonds Yat can't wait ! :yipi:

We were very lucky indeed with the weather, it was summer all week :)
Not on Friday it wasn't babyjane - poured with rain midday.
But you are right about the rest of the week.
Hope you got around to visiting Arundel/Chichester/Bognor & some of the other beautiful beaches in this area like Climping & the Witterings.
Glad you had a lovely time.
-
I like Arundel, great for an afternoon 'out' - Castle, Wetlands Trust, small shops in the town …….
-
I know ;D
But got other bits and Bob's to look forward to booked Silverstone classics for the Saturday so hopefully will see Status Quo rocking all over the world at night time! Then I was naughty and booked Fleetwood Mac again as they were so good and as DH said probably last chance due to their ages and mine ! :whist:
-
Cream Teas, Antique shops, river trips along the Arun etc.
Fantastic view as you drive along the A27. Castle & Cathedral all on the horizon - really lovely.
-
As well as Lancing College on the way …….. fab building!
The Classics is a good weekend, weather allowing!
-
Yes we did Arundel, Bognor, Chichester, Worthing. We liked Arundel best, all the little specialist shops and galleries and Harry Potter was serving in Belinda's 16th Century tea room ;)

A wave of the wand and a cuppa arrived then :D

do those wimmin's pee gadgets work?!! No foot floodage?! Rather alarming that am****on sells them with other frequently bought gadgets like 'emergency rain coat poncho' ;D
I was given a disposable paper one once, looked like a paper hat - far too nervous to try it.
Holidays - think I'm booking us on a flight to Bordeaux in early July. We can work our way down to see our sick friend and hopefully have a few days of sunshine.
OH has announced the Great Parental Duty Visit (this is definitely NOT a holiday) must be over Xmas to near Johannesburg, with a few days in the Cape as he wants to go and watch SA vs England test cricket. Save the pennies time then as it's twice as expensive airfare as almost any other time.

Yes they do! I always go behind a bush when out walking where there are bushes and not many people but at festivals bushes are in short supply and people are a plenty! England is more populated than Scotland generally. I always take mine to festivals and abroad if anywhere where there might be iffy loos! They work really well and it's incredibly liberating to use one and be able to pee standing up! The rows of shepee urinals are at Glastonbury
The ones you buy are much better than the disposable paper ones - they're made of a sort of rubbery stuff and siliconised so the liquid (!) runs off and they mould to your shape :o. Mine's purple!

……….. yep Taz :o

We have been a couple of times, it is a very evocative place. There are memorials to many organisations and events plus a special place for remembrance of babies born 'asleep'. Several interesting exhibitions about the various wars, a lovely chapel and a real atmosphere of peace and reconciliation. Plenty of parking plus cafe and toilets. There are lots of places to sit and reflect with flowers and a sensory garden. The wall of remembrance to service people who have died is updated every year(several names are people we knew from DH time in the RAF, including the best man at our wedding) and the scuptures are amazing and very moving. It's certainly worth a visit if you are in the area.

Off to my organ course tomorrow, after playing for the morning service. It won't be a holiday - far from it; we've got 5 hours of study on each of the 4 days. But I'm expecting to learn loads and I'm looking forward to putting it into action the next time I play the organ at church (which won't be until early September, as our instrument is under wraps at the moment while works take place in the church, meaning there'll be loads of dust and that mustn't get into the pipes).
Then, near the end of this month, we've got a week booked in Ullapool, in a self-catering cottage. My siblings are lined up to keep an eye on Dad while we're away. I'm just looking forward to a r----e----s----t :)

I was about 17 when I went to Ullapool. Loved it.

2 reasons not to go to Glasto then ;D - I did put my foot into a welly many years ago to find Small Kitten cuddled up at the bottom :-*
Aww! Sweet! :)
Well, I got back from my course a couple of days ago and it's been great. We all learned a lot and have come away with lots of helpful notes/info to turn into practice. We got to play on six or seven different organs, in churches at various parts of central London. And all went really well until the "Day of the Tube Strike" - I had to find my way on foot (without a map, although I had been given directions) from Leicester Square area to the Royal Academy of Music in Marylebone Road. It was hot, it was busy, the streets (which I didn't know and which seemed packed with huge, towering shops) seemed to go on and on for ever, and I was still trying to shake off a cold plus the remains of a broken foot. I wasn't half glad to arrive! At then end of that afternoon's session, I decided not to repeat the hiking exercise and I got a taxi back to Charing Cross Station - expensive but comfy, which I felt I deserved!! It was also great to stay with my brother, who I don't see very often. He cooked up a barbeque on the evening I got there, even though we ended up eating it indoors as it had gone a bit chilly by then. The week flew by and the others on the course were really nice - I'd like to think we might meet up again. I was shattered by the time I got back up north, but that's wearing off now. Oh, and I bought myself a nice skirt and cardi while I was there. ::)
-
Anyone else spend ages planning and looking forward to a holiday and then a week before you go start panicking and can't wait to be back home?
-
I normally do that 1-2 days before.
-
We were away last week Monday - Friday.
Left early on Monday and drove down to Duxford (from Leeds) - went and grinned like loons at all the wonderful, gorgeous aircraft there (well - DD and I did ... DH is interested, but not fascinated like us!)! Also, both Lady P and I have Douglas Bader as one of our heros (we know he wasn't perfect by any means, but still an inspiration in lots of ways) and to wander round the actual hangers and air-field from where he flew never fails to thrill.
Then drove on to Folkstone for an overnight - Shuttle on Tuesday morning to France. 3.5 hour delay due to 'issues' at the French side (!!) - but Eurotunnel's information in times of disruption is USELESS so we had no idea how long we would be delayed by .... their website was still advising of half-hour delays on the terminal when we had been sat in queue on the motorway, a mile from the terminal, with the engine off for an hour! We found out what was actually happening from the BBC news on the radio! Had we known the extent of the delay, we'd have gone for a ferry (I don't like ferries, hence the Shuttle - which I DO like - but it was flat calm, so it would have been fine). Finally got to France and drove 3.5 hours to Disneyland - yay!!
Came home on Friday - left Disneyland at 2.30pm French-time, and arrived home at 11.30pm our time (France is an hour in front) - so 10 hour journey! Hubby drove all the way with only a break for the Shuttle - he's a hero (I'd have driven once we were back in the UK, but he was quite happy).
It was a good holiday - probably our last as a family (DD is 23 and has now finished Uni) - but I'm now back at work and fed-up of the commute (done it once - this morning) and the whinging already!!!
-
Scampi - glad you had a good holiday. We love everything Disney. I thought our 25th wedding anniversary trip to Florida would have been our last family holiday, but since then they have been to Disneyland Paris with us and next week are going on a Disney cruise with us and they are 25 and 26 lol.
-
Got a while to re-acclimatise after my London jaunt, then we're off to Ullapool. Can't wait. We're going self-catering and although we'll have our wedding anniversary there, mostly we'll be cooking for ourselves. We'll buy in the best food and wine that we can find, cook it on their Aga, and just relax. Hills all around, the waters of Loch Broom right in front of us and interesting little shops to browse in. I am looking forward to it.
-
Crikey - makes me weary thinking about trekking across the Capital :o many years ago I went on several weekend music Courses and loved it!

Congrats Scampi glad you enjoyed France.

Just come back from a lovely long weekend in Aldeburgh up on the Suffolk coast. The campsite was great (we took our caravan), 50 yds from the sea and only a 5 min walk along the front to get to town. Some great walks for the hounds and a friend who lives nearby came to visit us on Friday with her two greyhounds as well - and yes, you can fit four greyhounds into one bed as we found out when they had all disappeared ;D ;D Next weekend (24th) I'm going down to London with my youngest sister for the weekend - it will mostly be spent eating, drinking and shopping!
-

Dazned it'll be well deserved! Our son has to wait until September to find out if he'll be made redundant. Bit like a headless chicken at the moment.

I booked a short break for the end of Sept. Back to the Trossachs. I really just wanted a stay at home holiday but that would not go down well with mother or sister. The attitude is if your at home things must go on as normal.....so given the fact I cannot contemplate not going till next year without a break from duties I booked another holiday.
Sad situation really, but on the other hand I get to go away again :)

This is way off the holiday topic....but.... ;D ....when has that ever stopped us.
It's my daughters 21st in November ...my mother has asked me if we are having a get together. I asked my daughter if that's what she wanted and I was told NO WAY ::)
Mother told me it didn't matter what my DD wanted ...it's what I decided. I dont work like that so I foresee a lot of digs at me nearer the time. It's my daughters choice.
Families......as far away as possible as far as I'm concerned.

It is nice as she's 88 and who knows ::) and to be fair, her and Dad gave us a Lovely Wedding :) ……. the 3 Valium the day before helped ;)
When first married they would travel to where ever we were living to take us for a meal …….. then time lapsed and we tended to spend it on our own, 10 years ago we went to Dornie and spent 4 lovely days on Skye. Birthdays are usually spent together alone ;)
We were engaged on my 21st and again, her and Dad gave 2 lovely parties - I remember having acute anxiety attacks that weekend though :'(
Your DD has made up her mind ……… maybe a meal out before/after?

Back after a rather eventful trip! We arrived at the rental house, or rather road it was on ??? in the dark, and the sign with the house number had fallen off the tree, so I spent 20 minutes wandering up random driveways with a temperamental torch until I found a house I recognised from a couple of pics I'd looked at weeks ago. DH amused himself testing out the car's turning circle :-X
Once inside the house was like a sauna and they had NYLON sheets on the beds!!!!! The best scenery of the weekend was viewed at 50+ mph as we dashed to meet someone, and the drive home today involved several traffic jams after we both had a restless night. Apart from that we had a great time ;)
Off to get the dog tomorrow - he'll ignore me when I arrive, then tell me all about his stay on the way home.

Once inside the house was like a sauna and they had NYLON sheets on the beds!!!!!
Glad you had a good holiday, getting_old - but nylon sheets!?! Guess what age those owners are NOT? ;D
-
I thought that nylon sheets went out with the Ark ;D
Maybe next time pack a couple of cotton ones in case :-\ : (note to self ;-) )
-
I always take sheets - trouble was that I have sheets for a king size bed and these were twins >:( Anyway managed to fold them up and use them, which helped with the "waterproof" mattress topper!
Oh, forgot to mention, there was no hot water the first morning because the owners insisted the cleaning staff turn it off to save money (it's rented every weekend!!!).
Will not be returning to that place!
-
We are off on holiday tomorrow and I am a complete stress bucket today. I know I have done it to myself, but I like to be in control. So I have taken it on myself to wash, iron and pack for myself, my husband and our 2 grown up sons (who live at home). It's been a little stressful. I just want everything to be right and I know things will be forgotten if I don't organise things. Going on holiday must rank amongst the most stressful things to do lol.
-
Have a fabulous, relaxing holiday 8)
-
Years ago I would pack months in advance in case I had a panic attack and was unable to face it :'(.
Now I have in my mind or on a list what is necessary to take and if we forget anything we can buy it ;)
We've had a few odd lets in the past ::) - 1 place which was let to students in Term time but holidays makers in busy season had the same bits of dog food under the sofa and Welsh dresser - I know because I had thrown them there the previous year ;D and my dog hadn't found them …….. plus the pork chop bone down the edge of the settee ……. so much for paying cleaners then!
-
Have a lovely holiday.
Yuck - did you complain to the owners about finding the bone and food?
-
Kind of. The response was they would tell their cleaners ………. ::) we never went back.
-
Don't blame you, but think about what else you might have found ;)
-
;D …….. it was a student let so we kind of knew what else might be there ::). Bedding was clean, bathroom was comfortable and we went there 3 times in all.
-
OK - so I have realised why I've had anxiety since Mum raised the question in April of 'what' we are doing for our anniversary next month. I got the same feelings as I do from Sept.,, onwards, i.e. the C.mas anxiety. Whilst I don't want to say 'no' as I can see the sense of Mum taking us out for a meal, it has made me quite depressed and anxious since April :-\. Even now thinking about it my stomach has tightened. It's even putting me off camping :'(
-
:bighug: CLKD
take one thing at a time maybe, cross one bridge before you think about the the next one.
-
In the day that's easier to do but that lurch of the gut as I drop off to sleep is un-controllable :'(
-
How horrible that feeling is. :-\
What does DH think about the best way to tackle it is ,or doesn't he know how you feel about it ? If you feel that strongly about it maybe tell mum that as its special anniversary DH wants just you two to be away together alone then have a meal with mum afterwards maybe .
-
Trouble is ……… the anxiety will still be there. I did think about that in April then thought it would be better to get it over with then ….. :-\ ….. have told her we will go over but not to book a meal …………..
-
Oh heck CLKD it's not good to think you've got to get it over with.
It's your wedding anniversary...........
Dazned has said lots of sensible things
What does your OH really want to do on the day?
Perhaps you could do something with him that you both want to do (that may be owt or nowt BTW) then meet up with your Mum later.
-
:thankyou: That's what we usually do, go our own way ::) but hey, Mum's 88 and currently healthy …….. so I'll ride the storm.
-
Hey CLKD - you do what you and your husband want to do on your wedding anniversary! It's definitely not a time for duty! For our 25th we went away just the two of us - no kids or parents or siblings. 30th we had a meal just the two of us. Sometimes one or two of our children come with us (for the meal) as it's in Aug and we're usually on holiday so if they happen to have joined us they come along too - but no big deal and no formality. No need to cause yourself any stress - as Limpy says - it is your anniversary and no-one else's :)
toffeecushion - hope you enjoy(ed) your holiday!
Hurdity x
-
I was wondering about Toffeecushion too :-\
I can't remember what we did for our 25th, found the cards from Himself last week :-* so suggested we ought to think about buying cards for our Ruby at the end of August, didn't we ;D : he gave me a look of surprise which means he's already bought or …………. ???
I want to be able to enjoy Life without anxiety clouding every plan.
-
Mine is riding high today CKLD - all of a sudden, the day before we go has arrived. I was fine right up till I woke up extra early this morning... now my brain is in free-fall trying to make sure I have everything on my list - what have I forgotten? Will I get everything done in time? Will we get to the airport on time? What if the flight is overbooked ( thanks Radio 2 for raising this new worry on yesterday's drive-time show!!!) and we get bumped off? How will I cope with driving on the wrong side of the road? The list is endless :o >:(
Whatever you do CKLD, I hope you and your DH have fun.
Galadriel (in a tail-spin) xxx
-
Galadriel airlines have always done that ,can you check-in online,if not just get there in plenty of time you will be fine . ;)
It's the ones who roll up one minute before check-in closes that might have problems! Have a great time away .
-
It's a nuisance. After all these years you would think that airlines would no longer over book >:(. If seats are unfilled well they've been paid for? so it means others can spread out!
-
They are greedy ,schedule flights will always overbooked where they can and hope for "no shows" that way they make more money !
-
I will wave at you tomorrow CLKD as we swim by you ! ;D
-
And no shows can mean.....an upgrade ;D
Hubby who travelled all the time usually business class got upgraded to first......he loved that ::)

-
Any upgrades we've had to pay for. :( Only did it a couple of times when going across the Atlantic. It was still mighty uncomfortable. First time there was a really tired toddler in front of us whose parents allowed her to swing from overhead locker above their seat!!! When we went to the Bahamas a few years back we upgraded & got more leg room & leg rests. Still couldn't sleep.
-
I can't sleep upright. The odd time we've had a seat that goes flat into a bed I've slept.
-
Yay! Checked in on line. Boarding passes on our smart phones (photocopies in case)
No queue to drop off luggage, no queues for security either! Amazing!
Now chilling in the departure lounge watching the planes and having a decaf.
Sorry for weird typing - tiny keyboard on phone!

Enjoy yourself Galadriel.
Have a smashing time.

Just back from a lovely week, self-catering in a great place in Ullapool. We didn't really do an awful lot and it rained half the time, but I've come back feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to get going again, and I think Hubby's the same. After a fracture, a cold, a course, work and ongoing Dad commitments, I really needed a break and I got it. Money well spent.
-
Ullapool is a trek from the Midlands too but I went aged 11 and loved it. Almost 10 years ago we went to Dornie, took 9 hours but once we got round Glasgow we felt we were really on holiday :-*
Enjoy Cornwall! Will you go out on the cruiser? I would be fine as long as I didn't need to find a parking space ;D
-
We're going off tomorrow for second main holiday - to our usual spot on Cornwall. Not looking forward to having to drive down towing the 17 foot sailing cruiser (me) while husband drives the VW. I really hate having to tow it - but have done it twice before - the VW is left hand drive otherwise I would drive that but have never driven LH drive vehicle and I can barely reach the pedals anyway as I am so short!Hurdity x :)
Hats off to you, Hurdity! Have a great time :)
D.
-
Have a fabulous time Hurdity - I don't envy you towing the cruiser but I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Getting excited about my holiday now. Leaving next Saturday from Southampton on the new P&O ship Brittania for a 7 night cruise - Guernsey, La Rochelle, Bilbao and La Carunna. Just been going through my wardrobe and pleased to discover that my cruise-type clothes still fit me, I haven't been on a cruise since 2012 so that is a good result as I have definitely changed shape since then. I was out shopping with my partner yesterday and said 'I really need to start looking for some clothes to take on the cruise'. He said 'I know where you could look - your wardrobe!' He was right.
-
;D
How lovely that you are excited! Have you done this trip before or is this new ground? My sister loves cruises down the Rhine etc.. Do you get to stop off at each Port?
-
Yes we do, I love cruises it is like being on a fabulous floating hotel and you arrive somewhere different every day. My favourite cruise highlights are sailing into Venice - I had never been there before and we could see it from a distance getting closer and closer and as we sailed in it was so beautiful that I started to cry. We were really lucky as we were able to berth right outside St Marks Square and we stayed there two nights. My other favourite cruise was a Baltic cruise to St Petersburg - one of the highlights of that cruise was sailing through the Swedish archipelago outside Stockholm, just stunning.
-
How lovely! Almost made a cruise booking several years ago as DH would like to see the Northern Lights - it was a no-fly trip. He decided that he would be bored :-X
-
No-one could EVER be bored on a cruise CLKD there is so much to do and see and you visit such lovely places. No-fly cruises are wonderful as you don't have to stress about luggage allowances. I need to go and move all the piles of clothes I have been trying on off my bed now and hang them up again and I have run out of steam, shouldn't have sat down!
-
Half the amount you think you will need? ;)
Then there's the shoes and bag to match and don't forget the sun hat ……….
-
I am going to try to take just enough ;)
-

Hello Judith,
We have just returned from a Baltic cruise with Disney Cruise Line, had a wonderful time. We have only ever cruised with Disney, but they are so expensive so next year we are thinking of trying someone else. Was it you who said they had sailed with P and O? We are thinking of the Ventura, I have read so many mixed reviews, have you sailed on her?
-
Well we are back from our cruise. Came back on Monday and have felt so tired since. Had a lovely time, I did feel as if I were living on my nerves waiting for something bad to happen. I now wish I had just relaxed and went with the flow as nothing bad did happen. I am so glad that our boys came with us, we had some quality family time and made lots of nice memories that will stay with us.
-
Hi Toffecushion, glad you enjoyed your cruise. I have been on one P&O cruise and it was wonderful, can't remember the name of the ship, it may have been Azura. I am off on Saturday on the new P&O ship, Brittannia, can't wait. I will report back.

My sister goes with Viking into Europe
Well I'm committed now :-X - DH has booked a table for 5 people soon …….
-
Began laying out my clothing and jewellery to wear for 'the meal' - ought to put shoes to 1 side too. Same shoes and handbag what ever I decide to wear …….. the choice is peach/cream or bright blue/pink ;D
Resigned now :-\ ……….. we are travelling next Thursday, eating on Friday evening (to get it out of the way ::)) then it will depend on the weather, how I'm feeling and whether Mum has any chores/shopping to do as to how we spend Sat. and Sunday ;).
We are booked into Ferry Meadows at the start of October for the antiques fair. We want to go to Brighton [long story short] soon. I also want to spend a few days at Carsington Water ……..
-
The day is dawning - off to pack the cases, try on some trousers not worn recently as I feel fatter and then ……. :-X
Still haven't sorted my jewellery ::)

Have a great time CLKD :) Can't remember where you're going and what meal?

Going to visit my Mum - haven't seen her for a while ::) - she's treating us to grub on Friday, once that's out of the way I can relax more.

Try and enjoy your weekend CLKD ,look forward to hearing all about it !
We are off to north Wales for long weekend :)
-
:thankyou:
North Wales is lovely in the :sunny: ;). We went to Llanberis on our 1st honeymoon 8). Cases packed. Need to write the card which I will give to Himself on Sunday :-*
-
Your "Himself" is hilarious CLKD ;D
dazned - hope you have a great time - I haven't been to N Wales since my early childhood - we used to go on hoildays there. It was always wet and we used to go on long walks with plastic macs and jiffy hats (these are the late 50's and 60's!!) - anyone remember those?
Hurdity x :)
-
I'm home. Flight there resulted in white knuckles. Hubby was ready to :sick02: I was feeling pretty ropey too. Stupid comments from hubby did nothing for my angst on way there!!!
-
Was it worth the home ward journey? :-\
-
Glad to be on Terra firma that's for sure. Way back wasn't great due to turbulence. When we arrived in Guernsey last week we'd already had a failed landing. We circled for an hour before they tried again. Hubby says, "This is how accidents happen!!!" I told him to put a sock in it, or words to that effect! ;) Some very relieved passengers.
-
Was Guernsey worth the visit?
-
It was nice, but you really need a car to see everything. We used local buses which don't really stop near main attractions. Buses only hourly & mainly stop at 7pm. Centre of Guernsey is dead at night. By time we'd had a meal we had to get taxi back to our hotel.
-
So that's ticked off the list then?
-
Won't be going back. Jersey is much better.
-
That means flying ? ???
-
Boats available too. But having watched them trying to enter harbour during the storms we had last couple of days.......
-
;D ……… I was born on an Island ;) ……….
-
I have in my hand 'go explore' by Caledonian macBrayne. Any experiences of travelling to the Islands ……. the worst that can happen? :beaurk: likely?
-
What time of year would it be?
-
Oh that's far too early to consider ::)
-
Cal Mak sail to all the islands near where we are. They also do the sailings from Oban.
I have gone to a lot of the islands...except the really remote ones...off the West Coast. Where were you thinking of going to and the time of year kind of dictates what the weather will be like.
Let's just say I wouldn't do a long trip in the winter but a lot of the sailings are an hour or less.
Arran....50 mins
Cumbrae ...10 mins
Bute .......35 mins
Dunoon.....20 mins
Mull from Oban ...45 mins
The rest I haven't done....
I'm not the best sailor but I'm fine outside in the fresh air.
That gives you a good choice.....by the time you are on and out of the car you are half way there.
Arran is my favourite ....Scotland in miniature ...absolutely beautiful.
Honeybun

-
Oh that's far too early to consider ::)
Best not go around equinox times - Gales more likely.......
-
Well.....
Mainland to Arran...50 mins in good weather....May till Sept.
My daughter came back in wild weather....not even green.
We were diverted.once ...2 1/2 hours and to a different port. ... ;D....I was fine but had to be outside.
Normally it's absolutely fine ...really it is, I see a good few of the ferries everyday, they are big boats and there is not a problem.

Until I step on board :D and we want to take the camper ……… good idea Limpy ……… this morning however, I can't even think about going away, queasy :'(. My 'uncle' who lives in Paisley often travelled to Arran, that's his suggestion when we speak on the 'phone ::)
-
On some of the smaller ferries you don't even need to get out of the car. You could sit in the back of the camper and pretend you were not even at sea.
Feel better soon

Do it, some of my best holidays have been in the Scottish islands. Take mozzie repellent though!
-
You're all making me well excited! Am off to the Highlands next Saturday - yippee!
-
I've been to Mingulay and a lot of the small islands round there and also Staffa. We went in June for mid summer.
-
Taking our friends who are over from Germany Wed to Symmonds Yat for long weekend this Friday hope the weather is drier than this !
-
Symonds Yat - you can watch peregrine falcons from there! we went in 2001. I couldn't look over the edge :o
-
We have a little weekend holiday this weekend at a luxury hotel for a wedding. We can play 'how the other half live'. The staff call everyone 'sir' or 'madam'. I don't really like that being a common pleb. I don't find it friendly knowing someone is being paid to be polite. I will probably get the giggles ;D
-
;D 'sir' and 'madam' are OK so long as it doesn't sound patronising >:(
-
BJ - It sounds like you've been to the hotel before.
If you don't like the way they do things why go back, will you enjoy it?
-
I cringe at "sir" & "madam." Our holiday hotel this year referred to us as Mr or Mrs which was much nicer.
I'd love to go on holiday to Arran, but hubby won't cross the water. I went at age 16 with my mum. One of the best holidays we had together. Boarded at Ardrossan & there in no time.
-
Maybe your Hubby and me will stay on the mainland: DH and you can go fishing ;D
-
Why won't he cross the water CG. Its not that far. By the time the ferry has reversed and turned around you are a quarter of the way there.
The only reason we haven't been for more than a day recently is because of mother. I need to be able to travel home without having to rely on a ferry.
You don't have to do the long crossing from Ardrossan, you can sail to Lochranza from The Mull of Kyntyre. That sailing is about twenty minutes and is very sheltered and almost always calm.
There is also a sailing to Campletown from Ardrossan these days....summer months only.
If anyone wants to visit the most perfect Scottish Island then Arran is the place.
Hubby and I were taking pictures of The Sleeping Warrior this morning. Absolutely stunning.
Honeybun

If you look at Arran from the mainland the outline of the island is of a sleeping warrior.

Just wondered if anyone had ever been to Italy, My hubby has suggested it as our next holiday destination but he doesn't know where in Italy, I have been looking on line and now im totally confused! He wanted a villa holiday, near the sea, with good restaurants close by but also a good location for sight seeing....... does anyone have any ideas of the best area to look? Thanks
-
Love Italy. Sorrento is lovely and lots of sightseeing nearby. Also love Venice.
-
Italian Lakes? :-* Milan for the day? Home of "the Last Supper" for which one has to book tickets these days, when I went we wandered in and stood …….
Maggoriare, Lugano, Isola Bella - have a look on line at the various regions tourist beeruous. ! Self catering, hotel over looking the Lakes [Como, Simonnee (sp)] ………
-
We have postponed our trip to Derbyshire - should have set off in the camper on Monday morning. Having suffered with early morning anxiety which means I have to dash to the bathroom, I decided it better to stay here and let the 40mg BB take effect; rather than having to struggle into jeans, wellies etc. to visit a toilet block ……… where there might be others ………
Bugga :-X
-
That's a shame CLKD :-\
Still as you are footloose and fancy free so to speak maybe go somewhere this coming week,or whenever the fancy takes you ;)
-
I had to 'pull' from next week or I would have had more anxiety, also the forecast isn't good ;) - add to that news of a sudden bereavement ……… better off here with 'days out'.
-
Sounds like a plan :foryou:
-
Sounds sensible CLKD. Absolutely no point in putting yourself through misery if you don't have to.
Holidays are supposed to be relaxing and not an indurance test.
Plenty of other weeks when you are feeling stronger.
Honeybun
X
-
Yep. I had anxiety when out and about yesterday but managed to contain it, I was in the camper watching wild-life.
Thanks - that's what I felt, let the BBs kick in again and gain more control ;)
-
Can't you pack the camper and go on on a day you feel good. Camp sites won't be full at this time of the year.
-
Robotwars we went to Lake Garda in 1979. Surrounding scenery is absolutely stunning! We weren't in the nicest spot, Bardilino, but other bits round the lake were lovely. My brother has also visited a couple of the other big lakes there & was blown away with the scenery.
Sorry HB never replied about why hubby won't cross the water. TBH because he's stuck in his ways & won't budge!
-
Tell him about the whiskey distillery tours...that might change his mind....oh or the chocolate factory or the cheese place. ;D

Littleminnie - we still need to book ahead …….. surprisingly sites are still busy ;) - better to stay here as the weather forecast is dire. Once I get my meds sorted ;)
-
Not a holiday exactly - we have a Funeral [his side] to attend so will be leaving on Thursday morning, have booked into a Hotel [can't remember where] so have to sort 'what to wear' …… don't know what the dress code is likely to be. DH has tried on his pair of black trousers and says they are tight :-\ - ish ……. so won't go shopping for comfy trousers >:(. So that will make me feel queasy especially if my anxiety is up.
-
The last few funerals I've been to I've worn black trousers, top and jacket/coat.
-
All black :-\. If anyone attends mine in black I'll haunt them ;)
I have sand colours with a pale lilac top ………. don't know how cold it will be in Church though so will probably drive by the previous day for a look-see.
-
Not all black, just the trousers. They look smart and are the part.
-
It may be worth asking about what to wear. The funeral is, after all, about the wishes of the dead person or the close family so it's polite to dress as they ask I reckon. I've been to far too many this year but it's been interesting in that the dress code has ranged from beach party attire to formal, all black.
What would make you feel queasy - DH's trousers being too tight or did I get that wrong? I probably misread it!!
Taz x
-
Unless expressly requested I don't wear black to a funeral. It's mostly grey that I wear but things are changing.
As Taz says, find out what is required.
It won't be that cold at this time of year. Do you have the reception or....purrvy as they say in Scotland....to go to. I hate that bit.....you never know whether you have to look cheerful, or mournful or what.
I'd rather come home to be honest.
On occasions I just go to the cemetery and that's it.
Honeybun
X
-
Knowing that DH's trews being too tight - might be too tight :o
The wake is about remembering. The fun and the sad. I'd rather skip the Church Service and head straight to the 'wake'.
As we are there for a couple and a half days, DH has found some antique shops to visit.
-
I must admit I always try to go to the Wake as it's a way of remembering the person and their life rather than their death. It gave me a warm feeling inside when I saw how many people came back for both my mum and dad's Wake. It was lovely to meet up with friends of theirs I hadn't seen for a long time and to hear stories about my mum and dad. Although it sounds strange we have some lovely photos of everyone together.
I hope it's not too stressful CLKD.
Taz x
-
:thankyou: we had a selection of photos when M in L died: from when she was in school and throughout - got people talking after the Service.
-
I hate wakes....some I have been too is just an excuse for people to get drunk.
Honeybun
X
-
Is that a habit North of the Border maybe ;)
At least that hasn't happened in any that I have attended - too much respect for those left behind ;) and as people have to buy their own booze …….
-
Think Irish....no disrespect to the Irish.....cross the sea a wee bit and then there are us.
Alcohol is generally provided up to a point.....as is the full sit down three course meal. Really don't like a wake at all.
I would rather just turn up and pay my respects....then leave.
Honeybun
X
-
Down here we tend to lay on a buffet-type 'do' - if not many people turn up after the Service we know we've got 'pack up' for the week ;). I wouldn't attend a full meal …….. because often here it's a Service, then Crem., then back to the wake so a meal would spoil.
-
It's done in a hotel CLKD.
I just think it's a thing for family to be honest but that a personal choice. It's nice for people to get together to celebrate someone's life.
It's just not what I've seen here.
Honeybun
X
-
For us, having moved far away, it's nice to see people at a wake [my parents were professionals so well known ::) ]. So lots of people come to pay their respects and catch up with my News ;-)
-
Guess it all depends on how old you are....I can't think of many of mothers friends that are still alive.
Quiet do I would think.
I actually don't want a do at all. ::)
Honeybun
X
-
Nor do I - a willow shroud, quick cremation, scattered …… then those attending can go and get on with Life ;): I will suggest that at the time of the Service those that can't attend should turn to the person they love and give them a squeeze …..
This is a bit of a meander ;D
-
And not sure what it's to do with holidays, except that's the permenant one ;D
Oh yes you are going on holiday to a funeral....or something like that ::)
Honeybun
X
-
I've been to lots of different types being a serial funeral attender or so it seems lately! The last one - I think it was the last one - was my friend who had mouth cancer. He was a great social person but his local pub (my local) was too small to hold the number of mourners expected so it was held in one of the other ones he frequented. The first drink was free and everyone was offered a glass of champagne or soft drink to toast him. The buffet was provided. There were 300 mourners at the crem and half of them came back to the Wake. We started there, obviously, and then after a couple of hours went back to "our" local and toasted him again there. I was driving so didn't have anything more than the champagne and a glass of wine. Others were more merry but not in an unpleasant way. It was a fitting tribute to a really happy guy. He planned it all himself of course having had a good few months to sort it out which gave it quite a poignant feel.
I want everyone to have a proper "knees up" when I go - the more the merrier. Definitely no cremation for me.
We digress from holidays!!
Taz x :cancan:

You need a 'service' of sorts though ……. or the wicker basket will begin to rot ;)

Burnham on Crouch apparently ……. have done a google 'walk', as you do: on the Coast then :-\. Hopefully being by the water will ease any anxiety ;) - it's a totally new area for me :o
-
We are off to Disneyland Paris on Monday - I'm so excited. Although I broke my tooth today so have dentist to deal with tomorrow before I can totally relax.
-
Ouch! was it nut crunch brittle that you were chewing on :-\ Enjoy!
-
It was a softmint (apparently not very soft)
-
Aaahhh - they tends to fight back - chew, stuck, un-chew, broken!
-
Away Honeybun? Weather?
We are out Wed. for a day trip in the camper and later this week for an over-nighter …… so lots of packing of warm clothing, grub, fresh water ::)
-
we had a week in Majorca in Late June and it was wonderful. this weekend I've been away with my elderly Mum and the weather was superb. Hoping to get a week in somewhere warm before Xmas.
-
Just back from a fortnight in Fuerteventura - idyllic as always 8). Off again next Tuesday to Antalya - hubby is on a works trip, some big cement show being held in a 5* AI hotel and did I want to tag along - er, yes please!!!
-
;D ;D
Nice one Pranja.
Honeybun
X
-
 A Cement Show :o :-\ ……… now that's what I call obsessive ;)
-
My hubby used to go to Plastic and Rubber events.
Now they were fun ;D
Honeybun
X
-
I went too Pranja......he was a plastics moulding design engineer so not as exciting as it sounds ;D
Mind you he was involved in making plastic speculums.....not his finest achievement ::)
Honeybun
X
-
That's exactly what I told him....an instrument of torture ;D
Honeybun
X
-
LOL to all the comments - he works for a company that makes infra-red cameras but he mostly covers the cement industry. The show is just one of three at the end of this year - I had the choice of Antalya, Cairo or India - chose the first one :)
-
Which is where exactly ? :-\
Camper packed, ready for the 'off' in the morning
I believe there's a Show for plastics and rubber but one has to be over 18 to attend :whist:
-
Wasn't that kind of show ;D
Where are you off to this time CLKD. Hope the weather holds for you. It's been great for us this week. Very very warm....and frost at night ::)
Honeybun
X
-
No frost yet. Off to an antique fair so an over-nighter in the camper. Meeting with friends 2-morrow evening …… we can walk to/from the Pub. so must remember to pack the torches!
Glad the weather's been kind :-*
-
Enjoy CLKD
I have taken the most wonderful photographs.....it's been stunning.
Off for yet another walk soon if my little legs will stand it .
Honeybun
X
-
Your legs will be fine - enjoy! Been to Luss yet ;) - they do a good meal down that street …...
-
I'll bet your photographs are stunning HB, you've had such lovely weather & the colours must be beautiful!
-
Luss on the way home CLKD, if it's not misty.
The colours are lovely CG, and it hasn't rained.....can you tell I'm quite stunned ;D
Honeybun
X
-
It won't be misty ;) ………. if it is, wait until the sun comes through.
-
It's been wall to wall mist every morning up until 11. Really thick stuff too.
Honeybun
X
-
OH cut with a knife-type fog :o - good excuse for a lay in then ;D
-
Got to be packed up and out by 10am in the morning mist or no mist. That's why we will decide what to do in the morning as we head back home.
Honeybun
X
-
I think that little food shop in Luss opens at 10.00 ;)
-
Hi.
HB hope you get to Luss, we used to stay few miles from there as kids.
CLKD enjoy your night away.
Thats me and daughter now in cyprus, while my husband is offshore. Although I'm enjoying myself, its a totally different holiday to when he is with us. So proud of myself for managing with hand baggage, that was a first. Nice to stroll out of airport without waiting for ages.
Linsey x
-
Crikey Linsey44 - :medal: some sun and Sangria will work wonders ;)
Home now.
-
Where in Cyprus are you Linsey44 ? We are off to Paphos in 3weeks. ::)
-
Hi Dazned
Paphos, universal area. Weather fab. Hopefully no earthquakes like what you had.
Where are you going next time?
Linsey x

Same villa out by the Sea Caves ;)
-
Home after an over-nighter in the camper
Need to plan the next stop over …….. Brighton here we come ;D
-
I love the Lanes ,plenty of bricabrac shops to rootle in CLKD ;)
-
Yep. Lewes is good for antiques too (that's where I had to run from 12 months ago :'( …… so I now have a mental block about going back :-\ )
-
Not logged in much in past couple of wks Now back again in uk. Landed wearing flipflops in only 2degrees. Note to self take shoes for return journey next time.
Hope everyone is well.
Linsey x
-
Cold toes then ;D....bet you have fluffy socks on now.
When are you off to Brighton CLKD, getting cold for the van ?
This time last year we were preparing to go off for a week for our anniversary.
Started looking for next year....just hate to think I've months and months without a break.
Honeybun
X
-
Because our friend is away and because we have colds/coughs and because thinkig about going to Brighton is causing my anxiety levels to rise :-\
Was your break 'good' Linsey?
Where do U fancy Honeybun?
-
Off to Wales next weekend for a flying visit to view 2 houses !
Then 2 days later fly to Cyprus not good timing me thinks !
-
I took a list of what I expected my new house to give me, i.e. wide windowsills. Let us know how you get on!

Where in Wales Dazned?
Enjoy Cyprus!
-
A little village just outside Caernarfon on the Beddgelert road. My nephew has already viewed them and deemed them Ok for us ;)
I lived in the same village many moons ago !
-
Hope it goes well Dazned!
Is it to be a permanent dwelling?
-
That's the plan in the next few years but for now just for as many trips in a year we can fit in. ::)
-

Sounds good!
-
Dazned, wales trip sounds exciting. Enjoy cyprus the weather was fab, sea is lovely and warm at this time of year. I'm trying to talk husband into going back in a couple of weeks just the two of us. Watch this space. Uuummm.
CLKD we had a great time thanks. Was lovely spending quality time with my daughter on our own without everyday distractions. She was as good as gold. Very relaxing. You been ok?
Linsey x
-
Did DD appreciate the sunshine? I do wish I could get up and go without anxiety, watching MotoGP at Philip Island this afternoon; blue sea, sunshine and Valentino :-X :P - we wouldn't have any money in the Bank ;D
Coughing Linsey, coughing ::)
-
Camp site booked for Brigton early November to coincide with Chris Macdonald's Exhibition …..
-
Coughing finished yet CLKD?
Dazned hope you arent in cyprus just yet, my neighbour from there texted to say on radio apparently 12inches of rain fell in 2hrs and stormy for few days.
Linsey x
-
Think Dazned will be in/heading for North Wales - where it's p--ing down at the moment - supposed to dry up later though.
-
It snows thickly in that area too but don't tell her ;)
Coughing still. Loose cough, no wheeziness or tightness
Anxiety up and we don't go for 2 weeks :'( - sometimes I despair when I can't do 'normal' things like booking a holiday, I ought to be looking forwards to it :bang: :bang: :bang: - we are going to collect a 40th wedding gift to each other that Chris Macdonald has made specifically as well as having a look-see at his Exhibition which starts next weekend.
Bugga ……… if I didn't have a loving DH I would bury myself under the duvet.
-
Maybe your hubby could book the next holiday then not tell you until the day before?
-
That sounds like a good idea LM.
What d'you reckon CLKD?
Your DH would never do anything he knew you wouldn't like.
-
You generally do fine when you get there CLKD. Remember Scotland last year....you loved it.
Keep telling yourself that as you pack your thermals ::)
My son has been in Brighton this week at a conference and is now in London with a friend. The confidence of the young.
Honeybun
X
-
I'd forgotten what it felt like being young ::)
There was one time when I was around 30, OH and I were in a Chinese restaurant using a payphone to book a skiing trip - leaving at 5am the next morning! :o
No way I could do that now - For so many reasons ::)
-
Oh just getting up and going. Hubby and I used to do some great road trips, just on the spur of the moment with no idea of where we would stay ::)
My son has met up with a uni "friend", I use the term sort of loosely as this young women may well become my daughter in law. They made a pact years ago if neither of them had met anyone by the time they were 30 then they would get married to each other. I have never been sure how serious they are......and they are 27 next year :o
Honeybun
X
-
We are returning to an area I fled from 12 months ago :'( and we have to meet someone to collect the Gift he's made us. Probably better to have the anxiety now ……..
 ……. you were wondering what to knit Honeybun ……. bootees springs to mind ;)
-
Good grief don't even go there ;D.
We are talking....well I don't actually know what we are talking about...but not children.
It had been a long distance relationship lots of times and it hadn't worked, but I fully expect him to come home and announce....something ;D
Honeybun
X
-
:o ……. you'll need a holiday then? ;)
-
Forming a list in my head regarding our trip to Brighton on Sunday. Busy until then - dentist, fishing, antique fair. Away until Wed., busy on the Thursday with a big meeting followed by Mum [89 soon] asking us to visit on the Friday for a few days :o - so I need to put on one side clothing that we will need to visit with Mum ….. meds. ordered to be collected 2-morrow, hope that they will be 'in'. Need to buy more Karvol …….. and sort meds to take away for the 2 trips. I think a list is required!
-
Sounds busy CLKD.....weather not exactly holiday like though. Hope it's at least dry for you.
Honeybun
X
-
Today is dull. Sunday was BeauTiful ……. would be nice to see the Coast in :sunny:
-
Don't hold your breath.....it's November ::)

We're closer to mainland Europe down here though ;) ……
-
You keep telling yourself that ;D......it's November. ;)
Fingers crossed though.
Honeybun

Sunday was LoverLY ;) …….. we're plenty warm enough in the sleeping bags (-40 degs) and have blown air heating if necessary. November can be warm ……….
-
Yes it can ;D
I'm sure you will have a great end of season holiday......wish it was me.
Honeybun

Anyone still going on holiday in 2015?
We have our last one over Christmas itself this year! My husband has a big birthday at this time so we are all decamping to Cornwall for a week - exciting but will take some organisation :)
Hurdity x
-
Sounds good.
We leave 30/12 for cyprus so just scraped into 2015.
Enjoy.
-
Does visiting his brother/wife and my Mum at C.mas count :-\ :D
-
Well only as long as its not an ordeal or a duty visit, then you might qualify.
-
:rofl: it's both ::)
-
Nope you dont qualify under this thread. Sorry
-
 :na:

That'll be lovely. Are you renting a house there?
This may well be our first Christmas staying in the local area since we moved here, and it's not by choice! I'm still considering heading to the holiday home on Christmas Day and sleeping on a air bed if the furniture place will agree to deliver the bedroom stuff on Boxing Day.
-
Well yes two holiday apartments (in a converted former old pub/hotel) in a small village overlooking the sea....
Sounds complicated getting_old - so you've moved house recently but you have a holiday home somewhere else that isn't furnished yet?
You win Linsey - we'll be back before you go - sounds lovely! Will it be sunny and warm in Cyprus then?

Oooh - walks along the beach on Christmas Day, then cosy fires in the evening - sounds wonderful.
Not quite - we're in the process of having a holiday home built (our choice) which should be completed in the next few weeks, and buying a place locally (not our choice!) which we should be moving into the week before Christmas. I'll need a holiday to recover!!!
-
Cyprus our favorite place . Whereabouts ? 8)
-
Been away from the forum for a while - but can I add my holidays that I've HAD this year? :D
(The hols seem like a long time ago now though......) We had a week in the Florida Everglades/on Gulf Coast, then 2 weeks at Walt Disney World in the summer, and had a week in Egypt - just the week before the jet came down ( :'( )
-
Dazned - universal area paphos.
Hurdity - weather could be a mixed bag, nice days / wet days. Last new year was torrential rain for 3 weeks. Still better than being in uk as there are good places to go and eat / have a drink in the bars or hotels etc.
Looking forward to it.
Hope you all have a great time,
X
-
Lovely we just came back 8)
-
Ive been there a lot this year.
Week beg jan
Week mid feb
4 weeks july
2 weeks sep
10 days new year.
I would be happy to stay there.
X
-
Hurdity - SNAP we are off to Cornwall as well, but for New Year. We are going to Nanstallan near Bodmin, a nice cosy cottage with a real log fire
-
Clovie - unpacked yet?
-
haha, yes just about CKLD!! ;D
-
Washing done ? :D
-
HAHAHA, yeah just about ;D ;D Need suitcases again in March though, so not much point putting them away LOL ;) :D
-
I have one set of clothing, washing kit, towels, T-bags, sugar, in the camper van, the rest in the house. Ready to take. I can now pack within 30 mins. in an emergency ::)
-
Impressive!
VEERRRY organised! :clapping:
'Have kit - can travel!' :)
-
Yep ;D
-
Watching Ainlsey with Len earlier they tried some Cypriot food ……… and I wondered what the language is so had a google as you do ::) …… seems Turkish and Cypriot are the main languages plus English 'cos we were there. Food - squid :sick02: and other fish plus lots of fresh fruits, nuts and veg.. I'd be OK with that ………. the Island has a huge history 8)
-
Very huge history in cyprus. Its much nearer the start if middle east than most people imagine. A stones throw from Syria. As there are British sovereign bases / army and raf personnel you feel safe enough.
Its the only occupied country left in the world i think, separated by the green buffer line that the UN patrol. Ive never been to the turkish part only the south.
The food is good, just my kind of thing.
Cant say im overly keen on the local wines, we usually buy chilean wine, much the same as we do here.
Oh you just put me in the mood to go back.
-
My friend was in the RAF over there.
-
I would imagine they enjoyed it?
-
I don't think so ……….. it was in the late 1960s.
-
Watched Alex Pollisi last night and Gino earlier this evening - it was like being on holiday from my arm chair ;D but oh the distances and it meant taking a ferry to Capri and Ischia :o
-
Didn't like Capri much. When we went we weren't impressed.
Could you do a ferry, it's not like being trapped on a plane.
-
I loved Capri 8)
Shows how different we all are. The Amalfii coast is breathtaking in more ways than one ;)
-
I loved the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento, just didn't think Capri lived up to the hype.
I was the same when we went to St. Tropez, I expected that to be stunning but it's a bit of a dump.
-
After the horrid 3 weeks we've been through we are taking time out ……….. shutting ourselves away once we've done the Duty Visit to recoup. Weather forecast is for blustery wind with heavy rain: again . Hopefully there will be lots on TV that we can sleep through!
Stay safe you all!
-
Enjoy as best you can CLKD safe in the knowledge you will be hibernating with Himself afterwards.
Linsey x
-
Can't wait - we have a 7ft x 6ft bed, leccy blanket and lots of blankets …………
-
Home ;)
