Bisphosphonates

Bisphosphonates are currently used as first-line treatments in postmenopausal women with proven osteoporosis who are not suffering from menopausal symptoms. Tablets should be swallowed with water, in an upright position, at least 30 minutes before the first food or drink of the day and at least 30 minutes before lying down.

Alendronate
(Fosamax once weekly)
70mg 1x weekly
Alendronate/vit D
(Fosavance)
70mg/2800iu 1x weekly
Alendronic acid (Fosalen) 70mg 1x weekly
Alendronic acid (Fostepor) 70mg 1x weekly
Alendronic acid (Osteomel) 70mg 1x weekly
Alendronic acid (Romax) 70mg 1x weekly
Alendronic acid (Tevanate) 70mg 1x weekly
Ibandronate (Bonviva) 150mg 1 monthly
Risedronate
(Actonel once a week)
35mg 1x weekly
Risedronate (Actonel) 5mg 1x daily
Risedronate/calcium
(Actonel Combi)
35mg/1250mg 1 Actonel followed by 1 calcium daily for 6 days, then repeat
