Title: Magnesium
Post by: Tracey E on October 24, 2019, 05:51:38 PM
I would just like to share how much Magnesium has helped me with my withdrawal of HRT.

Palpitations: Within 30 minutes of taking Magnesium palps have all subsided.

Hot Flushes: I've read a few studies about Magnesium helping regulate your body temperature and I'm pretty sure it has helped reduce my flushes. I only get 1 per day abd that's during the night.

Hormonal balance: Another positive of taking Magnesium is it's ability to help with hormonal balance and Thyroid function so a positive there.

Anxiety & Sleep: I do believe that Magnesium has not only helped with my sleep during HRT withdrawal but kept me chillaxed as well.

It is my wonder supplement, I'm taking quite a high dose 400mg but the benefits are definitely showing.:)

Just thought I'd share... X

Thanks for sharing, I'm trying to get off hrt too and I have thought of trying magnesium.
How long have you been using it? Also, has it affected your stomach at all?
Thanks Spangles

Hi Spangled, I've been on it for two weeks. I use Chelated Magnesium and it hasn't upset my tummy. I feel more relaxed and sleeping better to.

This is worth a watch from Dr Gupta;

I take Magnesium every night too! :) It's in a ZMA formulation, it's zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6. It helps with sleep. I also sometimes rub magnesium spray on my legs at bedtime if my legs are achy. It seems to help.

Hi Sammie I don't know about the hair regrowth to be honest it's a bit early for me to tell. I have my ovaries and womb, post menopausal about 3 years or so. X

i wouldn't be without magnesium! I also bath in epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) and I use borax too.

Hi Birdy, what is borax good for?

I'm amazed magnesium has stopped the pals, I've got a box of propanolol sitting here and they had little effect at all. :( X

Do you think it can do any harm me trying this?

I am on Femoston 1/10.

I was given beta blockers in May for physical anxiety symptoms.  They stopped working so I stopped taking them in August.

Tried Fluoxetine a fortnight ago - not for me!

Having had a good day yesterday and a good start to today, the palpations have kicked in worse than ever.  These are the worst thing for me, very scary.

Can trying a low dose of Magnesium have any adverse effects or is the worst case scenario that they just won't help at all?

Can anyone recommend a particular brand? Also I don't like big tablets? Are any of them easier to swallow than others?

Thanks.

How much magnesium are you taking daily?

300mg from the ZMA tablets, and lots from the foods I eat as well (turns out I eat a lot of high magnesium foods). Plus the magnesium spray. Not sure how much it contains but it is absorbed through the skin. I used to take higher doses but didn't really feel much difference.

Hi Ali, yes I would try them they've sorted out my palps where propanolol had little effect. I buy Solgar Chelated Magnesium but they also do a Magnesium Citrate too. You can get them via Ebay as Holland and Barrett have run out. They are quite big but you can snap them in half. Take one tablet a day and see how you feel. X

I guess there must be a lot of folk out there magnesium deficient. I don't understand how you can get to the age of fifty and then suddenly need magnesium, when you never needed it before. 🤔

It is my miracle cure for all my ailments, I will no longer be without it. X

Magnesium is a muscle relaxant which includes the heart muscle.  It is often used as a by doctors, in certain circumstances, for heart problems.

I've heard really positive things about magnesium so I tried it last year, mainly for sleep issues and stress. I used Floradix Magnesium Liquid as it was suppossed to easier to absorb, but it gave me lots of stomach issues, so gave up.  I did wonder about using it externally, what are others experiences?

Ali, hey Hun.
Do try the magnesium, it's good for aches and pains too.
I'm looking for something to take, cos I think I might stop the Fluoxetine as well  :(
And I've seen some recommendations for Inositol (sometimes referred to as vit B8) which is supposed to be good for anxiety.
I just need to order it online.

CG, it shouldn't make a difference, but I do think it can.
Also, saw a private meno specialist today (oh my poor credit card) and he said that ADs don't actually help anxiety or low mood that is caused by hormones.
So, do I keep going ? Don't know.
Hope you are having a good evenjng. x

For those that don't get on with tablets (I am ok with them) you can buy magnesium powder as well :)

My fear was getting the trots but the first thing I told someone in a health food shop was about my meno headaches and she went straight to Magnesium...

Types and their uses:
Magnesium Citrate - mild laxative, best for constipation
Taurate - best for cardiovascular health
Malate - best for fatigue
Glycinate - most bioavailable, non laxative
Chloride - for detox
Carbonate - antacid/reflux

Probably best to test your tolerance before you max out to 400g a day ;)

I've been on Chelated Magnesium and never had an upset tummy ir the trots. I take 400mg a day and it's definitely helped with my acid reflux and palps. Probably helped with the hot flushes too.

Where do you buy it from? Brand? Dose? Did you do your own research or was it recommended to you?

I will continue with the Magnesium spray for now but would like to know more about other options!

Thanks.

I did a little bit of research after reading a long post (article) written by a member on some anxiety forum
https://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php?64229-The-Inositol-Guide-PsychoPoet-Research-Initiative

It is very detailed!

I bought mine from myprotein, a 500g bag goes a long way. I started with about 1/4 teaspoon 2x a day then 3x a day then increase the dose every so often.  I felt a difference very quickly. I am now at around 1/2 tsp 2 or 3 times a day and that's been the same for awhile now.

I also use the magnesium spray at night, especially when I am very sore (FMS) and I take an oral supplement as well. I hope the magnesium helps. it seems to be helping a lot of people, but if it's not enough for you, then inositol might be worth a shot.

I see a Naturopath/Herbalist and she told me to take Magnesium.    It hasn't helped with my severe migraines (trying different things for these), but it has definitely helped with my restless leg syndrome at night.

These are the ones she said I should take.  I take 600mg a day.  I also take an Epsom Salts bath twice a week.

Evening ladies.....

I started to use the magnesium spray on Saturday, 5 sprays in the morning and 5 at night (which is 180mg total)....

I am a little fed up with the greasiness of the spray so have bought Magnesium Glycinate capsules, 100mg per capsule.

I have seen a definite reduction in my palpitations since starting the spray.... do you think I should try one capsule in the morning and one in the evening?

I should add that I feel I have also experienced a ‘shift' in my hormones this week (more ratty, achey etc) (I am peri) and so I am wondering if this has effected the number of palpitations I am having?

I will continue with the magnesium regardless....

Thanks.

Hi everyone. I'm new here.
Just wanted to say that's it's actually really easy to make your own magnesium oil. I made some back in the summer and it's lasted for ages. A much cheaper way of buying it. I'll dig out the recipe and post again.

I'm so loving this forum, I've been having a really rough time but it really helps to know you are not going through this alone xx

Magnesium is very important.  It's a muscle relaxant, helps with sleep, migraines etc....it's a mood enhancer as well.

My Herbalist told me to take between 400-600mg of Magnesium Glycinate - Glycinate is easily absorbed.

It has helped with my restless leg syndrome at night.

She also told me to take 3 x Epsom Salts baths a week, at least 15 mins in the bath.

Possibly not a good idea to use magnesium in the bath if you have VA as it may make the vaginal area too dry.

I am right in the middle of testing for my 8% premature ventricular beats. My magnesium and potassium were fine and so was my thyroid. There is no proof that supplementing magnesium does anything for menopause symptoms and palpitations. Magnesium can actually cause diarrhea, so people should be careful with it.

Proper medical examinations are the way to go along with a healthy diet and exercise. I have learned from experience, not to self diagnose or medicate with natural therapies that do not have any regulation or even proof that they work.

Anyway, just my thoughts. I am sure many will disagree.
