Lanzalover x

We are going to Mum's this week, weather allowing - hardly likely to be a holiday though ::)
-
I keep looking at Slovenia in September for a week next year.
Not sure if it will be warm enough though :-\ :-\.
-
How warm would you like it to be on holiday? Surely the travel brochures will give advice on temps. during the year, or hop over to a 'Slavenia' travel site so get an idea?
ApparentlY Croatia is lovely too.
-
Only one more sleep yipeeeeeeeeeee
Lanzalover x
-
Arrived yet ? ;D
-
Yes arrived approx 2pm
Lanzalover x
-
Weather then ? ;D

ApparentlY Croatia is lovely too.
i have been to both Slovenia and Croatia (2002 and 2003) and i am considering a return to Croatia this year combined with Montenegro https://www.explore.co.uk/holidays/walking-montenegro-and-the-croatian-islands
Both previous trips rank in my top 10 of recent holidays.
-
How's the day been Lanzarote?
-
Back home now :'(
Had a really good time but due to having DGD with us didn't really have time to visit the forum ;D
First couple of days were beautiful approx 22/23 degrees the next couple were warm but we had a few showers each day, last day warm and very pleasant. Pity we were only there for five nights cann't wait for retirement when we will be able to stay all winter 😎
Lanzalover x
-
Lovely to hear great you enjoyed, retirement is great ::)
-
I echo that - we haven't found anything wrong with retirement yet.
Off for a few days. Not a holiday though :-\
-
Hope aok CLKD.best wishes x
-
Enjoy the break CLKD.
Back to work today 🙁

Looking forward to our first holiday of 2018 in April .... only 3 months to go :) !
Hurdity x

Somewhere nice hurdity ?
-
Hi
Has anyone been to Rome ? If so any hints or tips would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
Lanzalover
-
Hi Lanzalover. Love Rome. Went about 2 years ago. One of the best cities I've been too. Didn't find it too expensive either.
-
Somewhere nice hurdity ?
Hopefully! France/Spain border....

Lanzalover
Well yes but 43 years ago!!! Stayed in a youth hostel! I love cultural city breaks so I am sure you'll have a great time. Have a look at Tripadvisor as there are always reviews of things to do. Also get one of those DK little mini-guides with fold out map? either the Top Ten or the Eye Witness guides. I always find them handy for places like that...
Hurdity x
-
Many thanks for the replies and helpful tips. My friend has a special birthday so we have decided to have a city break her birthday is next month but I think due to various things it will be April before we actually go but the weather should be a little warmer then. Looking forward to it ✈️ .

Having a weekend away next month staying overnight in Bath DH is running a 10k race on the Sunday and we are meeting middle son, partner and other DGD and staying with them Sunday night looking forward to seeing them.
Lanzalover x
-
Bath is lovely.
-
Yes it is we've been before but looking forward to going back.
Lanzalover x
-
DH has just booked a holiday to Lanzarote at the beginning of March we will be there for my birthday and also carnival week looking forward to it.
This has cheered me up while trying to get over the nasty chest infection which I have had for a couple of weeks now.
Lanzalover
-
Great news: packed yet ;D
-
No not yet but so looking forward to it a it's only about 4 weeks away as we are going on the 3rd cann't wait but do we do have our weekend in Bath before that.
Lanzalover
-
What part of Lanzarote do you go to Lanzalover?
-
Off to Suffolk for two nights tomorrow. Really looking forward to it. Hoping it will lift the mid winter blues.
-
Enjoy Suffolk Shadyglade.
Littleminne we are going to Playa Blanca we have been going here for over 25 years and have seen a lot of changes in the resort over the years.
When we went in January we went to Matagorda for change a really enjoyed the holiday DH said we may go back there later in the year.
Lanzalover
-
Sadly Cape Town will be having their water supplies switched off in 10 weeks. 3 years of drought have depleted the dams in the locality. Wonder how Hospitals will fare? Also the tourist industry :-\
-
Lanzalover - we used to go to Costa Teguise but it became like a ghost town.
I believe Playa Blanca is the place to go, might try there if we go back.
-
This is the 2018 Holiday thread! Not sure why another one was started!!! Counting down the weeks now to our post Easter holiday.....the first of the year.
Hurdity x :)
-
Hi Hurdity
Where are you going on your holiday ? Sorry if you've already said.
Lanzalover x
-
We are going to Lake Como Italy this year, very excited about it not been yet.xx
-
Lake Como is lovely I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Lanzalover x
-
Thank you LL it's a coach tour of Lake Como Maggiore and then Milan I'm sick of flying I wanted to try a door to door service which included hotels transport and tours so that's why so looking forward to it.we can both be lazy and sit back and enjoy lol xx
-
Sounds lovely I would be interested to hear how you get on as DH and I were thinking of doing a road trip in America next year when doing al little research there was a coach trip which took in most of the places we had on our list of places we would like to visit. But we are just a little unsure.
Lanzalover
-
We have booked To go All Inclusive to Gran Canaria in early June. Daughter and boyfriend are coming too.
-
Morning LL it's a silver travel service with Leger if you want to have a look at them online,I've always wanted to do the bulbfields so that's booked for Easter weekend then after that Como tour and I'm going to book oberamagoe for the passion play it's once every ten years and next ones 2020 so I'm dying to see that.becaus3 it's coaches door to door I don't feel so panicky about going away daft aren't I 😂😂
-
I hope your trip to the bulb fields includes Keukenhof gardens, it's spectacular, I went last April for the third time and I'm hoping to go again next spring :)
-
Yes that's it I'm so pleased you enjoyed I'm looking forward to it wanted to go for years but never got around to it.its great to get good feed back thank you xx
-
Lake Como and area is lovely - as long as the mist stays away ;D
Isolo bella springs to mind :) as does hot sunshine. The hottest place I have EVER been is Milan in 1976.
-
Thanks for the info will have a look when I get some time.
Count down now on only 5 more sleeps looking forward to a week with DH and some sunshine ☀️☀️☀️
Just got to get through this week don't like the look of the weather forecast for this week one little bit hopefully it won't be as bad as they are predicting.
Lanzalover
-
Lucky you Lanzalover!!! I did mention my hol previously but don't expect people to read back over everything - we're going to Spain near the French border. I just get excited as it is usually the only time we go abroad for a holiday - around Easter time, although I tend to have a weekend away on the continent later in the year also! I can imagine you will be looking forward to the sun :)
Hurdity x
-
Some people do trips across the US by hiring an RV - recreational vehicle that is LARGE motor home. Or they get the Greyhound between motels. Or a mix.
-
Yes I am Hurdity cann't wait for some sun it is bitterly cold here at the moment. It strange how we get excited at the prospect of holiday but it's nice to have something to look forward to.
Thanks CLKD we were going to hire a car and go on our own little road trip the advantage with this option is if we rock up somewhere we like we can stay as long as we want or just move on.
But a coach tour has the advantage in that things like accommodation are already sorted for you and someone else has to do the driving. I will have to do a little more research.
Only 5 more sleeps now yipeeeee
Lanzalover x
-
That sounds interesting Daisydot enjoy.
Lanzalover x
-
GO whilst you are able to! I can't due to anxiety. Have never flown. A friend dropped dead from a stroke B4 C.mas ....... focusses the mind a bit :-\
Postcards please ;D

-
Lovely. Nowt like that here right now ::)
-
Thank you two hoots I can't wait will be there for Easter hope weathers good.x
-
Hope that Lanzo got away :-\
Nowt planned. We've enough snowy scenery here to last a few weeks ;D
-
Yes got away with a one hour delay but boy there was a lot of turbulence from France nearly all the way to Lanzarote seat belt sign was on nearly all of the flight. And DH was starting to look a little green but he wasn't the only one.
Son,partner and DGD not so lucky although they were on one of the few flights out of Bristol but they had to first fly up to Manchester to get on a flight from there going to Tenerife with mainly cruise passengers who were picking up the ship in Tenerife they eventually arrived 12 hours later than expected but sem to be having a good time now they are finally there.
☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Lanzalover x
-
That'll be sunshine then ;D [another reason not to fly!, turbulence that is]
-
Away soon so will be out of wifi and mobile range ::)
Not a holiday though :-\
-
Where are you off to CLKD x
-

Hope you're having a great time! I absolutely HATE turbulence (and flying also) and always grip my husband's arm tightly whever it happens. We normally don't fly at very turbulent times of year nor long haul but I still get v nervous!
Hey CLKD - if it's not a hol or pleasure trip away, then how about on another thread to let us know how you're doing?!!! Maybe start an "away from the forum" thread or something for people that want to announce their comings and goings!! :)
Hurdity x
-
Having a great time thanks Hurdity.
Turbulence doesn't really bother me unless it causes me to spill my G & T ;D then it's a major incident :'(
Lanzalover x
-
I already have an alternative thread :-\
Home now :bounce:
Would like to get to Norwich and the North Norfolk Coast soon avoiding Easter
Would like to get to Alnwick area
-
Hoping to go to Majorca next month for a bucket and spade holiday with youngest DGD.
Just waiting to get the time off approved by work and then we can book (fingers crossed)
Lanzalover
-
Oh - will you buy the bucket and spade once you arrive?
-
Sorry CLKD only just seen your post. We will buy when we are there.
Although I still haven't my holiday request approved at work yet ! DH asks me everyday when I get home if it's been approved I'm fed up telling him as soon as I know he'll know but even I'm starting to feel hacked off now >:( just wish they would let me know one way or the other.
Lanzalover x
-
You don't look well from where I'm sitting ;) - get a self certificate ready?
-
;D
Lanzalover x
-
Is that hysterical laughter - you can get 2 weeks off if so ........... :whist:
-
Unfortunately I don't think I would get away with it and my conscious would bother me (I'm to honest)
The holiday request forms had moved yesterday from the bosses in tray to his desk so hopefully it may be done on Thursday when I'm next in (fingers and everything else crossed)
Lanzalover
-
Busy packing cases
Shutting down the house
May be back by Sunday or Monday ::) but wifi is hopeless whilst we are away >:(
ENJOY EASTER :bunis:
-
Rome for us next week.
-
Oh lucky choice!
-
We know a priest who lives in Rome and who would have gladly shown us around, but he's over in the UK while we're there, returning to Rome the day we leave!
-
Enjoy your hols ladies :tulips2:xx

We went to Rome a couple of years ago. One of the nicest Cities we've been to. Reasonably priced for a City too.
-
That's good to hear littleminne I'm really looking forward to it just have to sort out dates with my BF.
Holidays approved at work so we are all booked to go to Majorca myself DH and youngest DGD for a week although DH and I will probably need a holiday to recover when we get back ;D but looking forward to some warm weather ☀️

Just had a lovely Easter weekend in Amsterdam the weather was so kind to us,piddled down when on the coach then lovely and bright when doing our walking tours.loved the train station in Amsterdam had great shops and restaurants, the whole place was absolutely heaving with tourists.went to the cheese and clog tours and did canal cruise and then diamond factory tour but best was kaukenhof the bulb displays were just beautiful had nice restaurants and plenty going on outside, great play areas and petting farm for kiddies,we were exhausted as crammed so much in but was worth it,on the way home we stoped at a Belgium chocolate factory, very naughty but nice lol.
-
Thanks 4 the update Daisydot. Do you feel relaxed now, would you go again?
It wasn't a holiday for us ......... these visits get to become more of a chore each time :'( but we have Plans ;D
-
Hi CLKD thank you it was a lovely break with no incidents for a change for me lol.I probably would go back maybe on an overnighter to do the stuff I missed, there just wasn't enough hours in the day.Its one of the friendliest places I've been to and we did get our moneys worth no doubt.
As an aside you cannot buy hrt otc according to the pharmacist I spoke to,she said no hrt of any kind without a prescription.I didn't need anything but thought I'd ask as the chemist was right there in train station.
Sorry your visits are so heavy on your heart but that's good your making plans we all need to be able to do that xx
-
:thankyou: might do some of the things we thought about for 2017 this year ::)
-
Pleased to hear you enjoyed Amsterdam Daisydot.
Start planning now CLKD.
Love Lanzalover x
-
I'm planning - in my head :D
-
Thank you LL x

Any plans for 2018 (other than going to our caravan) are on hold .... because it looks like we are going to Disneyworld in 2019!!! It's my 50th birthday in August, but we've left it too late to decide to go this year - so next year it is! I'm sooooo excited - we both LOVE Disneyland Paris, and I've always wanted to go to Disneyworld but hubby wasn't so keen .... but he's relented and said we can go :D :D Looking out of the window and yet another cold, wet, grey day, I'm really looking forward to that Florida sunshine, even if I do have to wait 17 months for it!!
-
Oh how lovely! Packed yet ;D ? Do you use your caravan lots?
-
How exciting Scampi, you will love it. There is no comparison between Paris and Florida. The Florida one is much much better. Universal is just as good as Disney.
-
How lovely Scampi it's so nice having something to look forward to I'm sure you'll love it and do pay a visit to Universal we really enjoyed the park when we visited.
Lanzalover x
-
Daisydot, I'm so pleased you see ejoyed Keukenhof I've been lucky enough to visit three times and it never disappoints, the colours are fabulous. I follow them on Facebook so I saw the planting that had to be done for just a few weeks a year when the park is open :o
-
Ty two hoots it was a privelage to be there the flowers were astounding considering the challenges they must have with the bad weather, the facilities there were great we saw them smoking herring fillets in big barrels in grotty weather outside and cheese demonstrations the poor staff were soaking wet but so good humoured it really was lovely.the wedding displays were amazing in the orangery,I would so recommend it for a visit it wasn't anything like I expected it reminded me of a theme park it was lovely.xx

Just back from Rome yesterday. Absolutely fabulous place, steeped in ancient history and the church. Take really good walking shoes with you, as public transport is not what it should be and you have to do lots of walking, over large distances.
I don't think I'd advise visiting at this time of year - it was crowded and we were always concerned about carrying any money on us. I'd love to go there again in something like October or February.
-
I went to Rome 25 years ago and it was fab,we saw pope John Paul on the balcony and got blessed in the square it was a fabulous place to visit so much history as you say but god the feeling of intimidation by the pickpockets was awful you needed eyes everywhere,The style and dress of the city people was fab too so classy looking in every age group,I know over the years there's probably been massive changes but it's so worth going to.theres a lady at the coliseum and she gets a grant from the government to feed and look after the feral cats there as it keeps the rats under control it was lovely chatting to her,I'm cats mad as youll guess lol,yes as dulciana says definately go and like all the big cities now just be security concious.xx
-
How did you feel whilst away dulciana? I think that the Italians have dress 'sense' in a way that we have never garnered ::)
-
How did I feel while I was away, CLKD? Well, footsore and exhausted ::) - Hubby's style is to race around on foot absolutely everywhere, which is fine but he's tall and I'm not, so I had to take three steps for his every two (or two-against-three, in musical speak! :))!! That said, all that walking did wonders for my anxiety, kept the symptoms at bay, helped me to sleep better and enabled me to see a couple of changes that I need to make in my life. Thanks for asking.
And yes, the Italians have style in bucketloads!

Lucky you, Daisydot. :) We got ourselves tickets for the Sunday morning Mass with Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square. Well....we set off for the metro after breakfast in plenty of time. We had to change trains after one stop so we got off and went down the escalator towards the platform for our connection. At the bottom of the escalator, however, there was what I could only describe as a seething mass of people who we very nearly crashed into as we tried to step off the escalator. This crowd continued right over to the edge of the platform where our connection to St. Peter's was leaving from. I knew at that point that, with all my recent anxiety, there was no way at all that I could cope with this crowd and that the only thing to do was to cancel our planned visit to St. Peter's Square. Why were there so many people?? The flipping Rome Marathon, that's why!! >:( In the end, we went to Mass at another church, which was beautiful, but I did feel very disappointed. Oh well, at least we still have the tickets to say that we almost went!! :)
-
Aww that was crap dulciana after all that effort I'm sad for you as that would have been your highlight.your anxiety would have most definately been through the roof anyone's would but there's always next year lol.good excuse to go back.pope Paul came to Glasgow in 1978 in the famous pope mobile and he came to the park at BellaHouston opposite where I lived so I also had the luxury of hanging out my tenement window watching the crowds but Rome was the icing on the cake for me,funny thing is my husband and children are R.C and I'm Protestant but it meant so much to me I'd have been a great catholic
When we went to St. Paul's sq there were little shops there and I got a certificate that was blessed by the pope but it had to be sent to me and I waited about 5 or 6 months with everyone saying I'd been ripped off but it did come just in time for Easter, sadly it's been lost with all the house moves but I felt so special at the time lol.hope I've not bored you it was just a happy memory for me.

Home yesterday after 10 days in France, 7 days in our favourite apartment in Dinan Brittany where the weather started off mixed but ended with us being able to sit outside with a glass of cider :) then two nights in a hotel outside of Lille for us to watch the cycling on Sunday, once again a lovely sunny perfect day for being outside.
A night in a nice hotel for my birthday in a couple of weeks followed by a visit to gardeners world live/good food show in the nec Birmingham in June are my next trips ;D
-
It's great when the weather is kind to you two hoots isn't it makes the holiday so much more enjoyable, that sounded lovely and nec sounds a good day out enjoy ! Xx
-
We walked away from Lourdes :-\ - plastic cruicifixes, plastic Madonnas, along side flick knives for sale to the public. From front windows of houses closest to the 'baths'. Would never go again.
Nowt planned. Other than house clearing this week >sigh< can't fill my head with the thought of going elsewhere :-\
Was it Paris Rubeux [sp] Two hoots?
-
We have the passion play booked at Oberammergau in June 2020 its once every ten years and we booked the fairytale castles tour with it can't wait for that one, many years ago we were in Belgium and wondered what all the fuss was about the streets were heaving with people so we found a little pavement cafe and sat down to have a bite to eat and god we didn't realise we were slap the middle of the procession of the holy blood,we had unwittingly secured grandstand seats in the pavement cafe and it was fabulous watching it,all the priests in their coloured robes and guards with machine guns and of course the chalice with the holy blood in it carried high it was astounding,we really have been lucky, right place right time, same in Jerusalem we got to light a candle in Christ's birthplace supposedly,I don't know don't care it was just so special to me.My next wish list is Lourdes.thats quite achievable not so expensive as the others.told you I'd have been a great catholic
That sounds really wonderful, Daisydot. I'd love to visit Lourdes one day, too.
-
Yes it was Paris Roubaix CLKD, We watched the race in two places. When the race reached our second viewing spot the riders were very spread out and lots had already quit because of the early crashes. Better half and son went on the the velodrome to watch the finish but they dropped me at the hotel so I saw it on the tv after a lovely shower to was the dust off ;D
We enjoyed the day and then heard the sad news about the young rider, such an awful thing to happen :'(

I listened to the then Pope in 1986 on my first trip to Rome. I have been back to the Square since in 2012 when I had a room in a flat only 2 mins walk away.

Why were there so many people?? The flipping Rome Marathon, that's why!! >:( In the end, we went to Mass at another church, which was beautiful, but I did feel very disappointed. Oh well, at least we still have the tickets to say that we almost went!! :)
I listened to the then Pope in 1986 on my first trip to Rome. I have been back to the Square since in 2012 when I had a room in a flat only 2 mins walk away.

After not having had a holiday for 18 months and thinking sensibly that we shouldn't have one this year because we've just moved house and funds are a bit tight, we decided this morning to go away for 2 weeks in September and to hell with being sensible.
I am so excited !!!! Eeeek ! xxx
-
Hi tiddles
Good for you!,
We went to Majorca last August, only for 4 days.
It rained for 2 of them, ok the other 2 but not brilliant.
But it made us think about it this year, because moneys tight,
although I'd go somewhere, OH isn't so sure, so I don't think we'll
be going anywhere this year.
Oh well, I can always watch ‘the Durells ‘. :sigh:
So have a good time enjoy yourself.
Worry about next week when it gets here, life's too short to worry.
Jd x

What I would love is a holiday where I can relax and come back feeling refreshed. Instead, every holiday Hubby and I go on is spent rushing manically around, looking at as many famous sights and monuments (largely all Hubby's choice - he's a history buff) as we can fit in. When we went to Rome a few weeks ago, my feet and legs were completely puggled at the end of each day after doing this all the time we were there. Hubby has much longer legs than me so he can stride while I have to skitter along all the time! (bit like 2-against-3, in musical terms ;D!) It's not that I'm against seeing what there is to see, but the odd "just wandering locally"-plus-coffees-and-whatever day would allow me to unwind and come back feeling as if I've had a holiday - rather than come back feeling as if I need one! :o Anyone else, or do all your other halves let you relax on holiday? I'd love to know! :)

We have various types of holiday. Long weekends doing museums, walking, scenery. Himself likes fishing so days out: me in the camper dozing and watching wild-life, him casting all day long from a boat. When we had a :scottie: we had self-catering holidays which meant a lot of walking. In all kinds of weather. All around the UK.
I look at the various town information web-sites for accommodation ideas and places to go. We are fairly relaxed, even if we went abroad we would have a day off and a day site-seeing.

That sounds nice and balanced, CLKD!

We have to chill due to panic attacks. So can't plan too far ahead. We have ideas for both to enjoy and go with the flow.
-
Dulciana - your description reminds me of holidays with my parents in the years between stopping going away with my maternal grandparents and starting caravanning! They used to drag us at break-neck speed around sights (and sites!), up mountains (I have bad memories of a day up Snowdon!!), you name it! Hubby and I are much more chilled on holiday - we both work long hours, so holiday time is for relaxing. We do sight-see, visit places, museums, etc, but at a measured pace!
Could you suggest a couple of 'chilled' days by inserted into the itinerary of your next holiday? Or maybe a day (or even just half a day) when hubby does his sight-seeing thing and you stay at your accommodation and relax? It's your holiday too, after all.

Hi dulciana
Scampis suggestion sounds like a good idea to me.

Well, not exactly a holiday (we've had one of those already this year) but I'm going down to London at the end of July for a week's organ course. Going to be lots of playing and hard work but lots of fun (I think!). Leaving Hubby on his own-y-o to keep an eye on my Dad then coming back to bore him with all the chit-chat about the course. I'm getting quite exited because there are lots of amazing instruments in London! :)
-
Oh do enjoy it! I went to College on musical long-weekends when I was 15 and 16, loved it. Met people who were really talented - we came from all over Norfolk to meet up, practised for 3 days B4 giving a Concert to parents etc. who had arrived to collect us. I often wonder what happened to those really talented players :-\
-
Thanks CLKD - I will! Need to book my train.....
-
Do you get a cheaper ticket if you book earlier?
-
Do you get a cheaper ticket if you book earlier?
I have done, CLKD, yes, although even then it had gone up since I first looked into it a week ago.
-
Some people find that buying split tickets for a journey is cheaper: from station to station rather than straight through ::)
Been out 4 the day ;-)
-
Dulciana, I love the type of holidays your hubby does. I usually travel alone and have been all over. israel was a favourite.
-
Tickettysplit (sounds like a train ::) ) - my son used this all the time...ends up with a fist full of tickets! great if you're on a budget....
-
Tickettysplit (sounds like a train ::) )
It does, doesn't it Hurdity? Very onomatopoeic! :)
Well, I've got all my travel booked for my London organ course in a couple of months' time and I'm looking forward to it. However, I'm also a bit worried about several things - I'm hoping there will be people of all ages there and not just 20-and-30-somethings; I'm hoping I don't get anxious or unwell; I hope I have the stamina for this intensive week; if it's hot, I hope I can stand the heat (I don't like heat); I hope I can pal-up with other course attendees so that I'm not negotiating London on my own; and I hope we'll all be safe. (This is all because I can't hold Hubby's hand as he'll be back at home......!)
Dulciana
:)

1) buy a little hand held battery fan in case of heat
2) take a little first aid bag with you as a crutch I always do this.
3) The week of the trip rest up no food shopping stock up beforehand
4) plan a route before you go and write yourself a wee plan
5) if 1-2-3-4 fail you grab hubby and make him go with you he can go sightseeing as you said previously he likes that lol.
In any event go and enjoy and have fun life's too short for “what ifs†isn't it xx

Oh thank you, Daisydot, this is so helpful - you've given me some great ideas here.
Plan a route - yes, good point. We'll be visiting organs in various churches across the city, so it would help to know where these are and how to reach them.
And a small fan and first aid bag - yes indeed!
I'd love to take Hubby with me, but he'll be back up here keeping an eye on my Dad.
And you're right about going and having fun. I mean, this is a week doing something I absolutely love! :)

Hi I'm new here :)
I just spotted this thread and thought how lovely it is, my holiday to Lanzarote in 10 weeks is one of the things that is keeping me going at the moment. I've been struggling a bit lately but the thought of a week's total relaxation in a villa (our own private space, yay) is wonderful. ;D 8)

That's great GiggsC just keep looking forward and take your wee emergency kitbag with you for security, basic meds but remember in Spain the medics are superb and the pharmacies are so knowledgeable so don't worry about anything it can all be resolved very easily there.LanzaLover goes there a lot so I'm sure she'll answer any advice if you need to post questions, she knows it well .xx

GOOGLE Maps are SO useful. Put your hotel into the map and use the little yellow person to 'walk' the area. You can get an idea of how far apart places are too by using the 'destination' facility. Then make notes dulciana.
Have an emergency pack of biscuits etc. and eat B4 you are hungry. Even if it means that you eat less at proper meal times. It won't matter for a few days. Wear comfy shoes. Keep bottles of water to hand. Pain relief if necessary. If all fails, grab a Taxi back to your lodgings.
Welcome GiggsC - enjoy.

We are staying in Gran Canaria in very spacious bungalows at a hotel. Spotlessly clean, near a nature reserve, 5 swimming pools, very good food etc. We like to go in June before schools break up so its a bit quieter.
We usually go to Adults only hotels but this is a family hotel and to be fair its mainly babies and pre-schoolers although there are a handful of slightly older kids who have obviously been taken out of school.
It hasn't spoilt our holiday but OMG some people let their kids screech, run around in the restaurant and dont seem to discipline them at all. Theres a couple we often see with 2 little boys about 6 and 7. At mealtimes both parents are either texting or glued to their phones and the kids are left to run around and help themselves to the buffet and then play about with their food. There seems to be no family interaction at all and the boys are just ignored. I have to take my hat off to the waitresses as people just walk away leaving all the debris that kids make all over the table or on the floor and they clear the whole lot up.
I probably sound an old fuddy duddy but its been a real eye opener for me as we made sure our children sat down properly when we ate out and certainly wouldnt let them run around or make a mess.
I think we will be back to Adults only next holiday but we are having a lovely holiday apart from this. ;D

A few years ago we took Mum a set of cafes on one floor. Rooms can be made larger/smaller by using screens. We were aware that there was a party for a 9 year old with lots of similar aged kids there. One 'escaped' from the group and began pulling chairs around in the area we were sitting. He wanted to get to the double doors onto the balcony but it meant pushing by our chair/table ............ :whist: "Are you with the others in that room over there?" was my question. "Yep" was the reply. "So I suggest that you go back on your own room and ask your family whether you can be in here with us and bring your father with you" . He slowly wandered back, giving me a look ......... an adult arrived from that area so I shouted over "I think you have lost a child" ......... with all the protection legalities etc. ........
He began to wander back a few moments later so I half-rose from my chair ......... he skiddalled. I won't put up with other peoples' children. End of. If parents appear to be on their gadgets I make a loud comment ...........
-
Have a great holiday LL hope the weathers fab for you xx
-
We had a few days away, weeding in Mum's garden, taking her on trips 'out', meeting a friend not seen for 5+ years. PHEW! Feet up now that we are home ;)

Hmm...I would love to have heard what the child's father said about you!
-
At breakfast today the family on the next table consisted of Mum, Dad and two little boys . One was very small, about 2 and the other maybe 5. Father went and got the food, mother put a mini Ipad in front of each child, cut up their sausages and left them watching their cartoons. My hubby said “I have seen everything now.â€
My niece is the same though, she puts her two kids in their car seats and puts these mini Ipads on the seats in front. It seems that kids have to be constantly amused these days. I dont think it does any good though because they both have the attention span of gnats. They come to mine and they want TV on, I tell them if they dont sit and watch it goes straight off. A minute later they want their Ipads or electronic games on, then they want to go in the garden, then they want to go in the summerhouse .... they literally just cannot sit still for a minute. When theyve gone I go and tidy up my summerhouse as they move all the chairs, turn all the knobs on the radio and CD player and throw all the cushions around.
-
Snooze. The parents and other carers were in general, unaware. They were all in another room talking to each other, not keeping an eye on the children running in and out! In these days of 'protection' issues .......... my point also is that the parents paid a lot of money to hire that facility [I know what it costs on an hourly basis] and the children should have been inter-acting with each other, not looking to annoy others. We were not allowed to touch anything that belonged to Mum or Dad, we had to ask to go into each other's rooms and even now I feel 'odd' going into Mum's bedroom or when going through her items. Like she's there, watching over my shoulder ;D.
When Himself and I were in Butlins in the mid-1970s, kids ran in and out of the cinema - even then they didn't know how to sit still to watch a film!
-
When my kids were younger and we were eating out with them, quite often an older person would come up and compliment us on how well behaved our children were! I know that some people do prefer to be in 'child free' zones but it's not always possible.
Yes, most parents nowadays seem to give their very young kids ipads or whatever to keep them entertained but I think it's just the sign of the times. Each generation is different and unfortuately, my kids generation is the one of iphones/ipads/social media blah, blah.Kids don't seem to play out anymore either and are often anti social as they hardly ever interact anymore other than over social media etc. I would hate to have been young in this generation.
Often I feel parents do anything for a 'quiet life'. I know I have with my kids but I have never lived near family. I had to look after my kids 24/7. I couldn't send them to Grandparents etc for a few hours. When you never get a break from your kids, it is easy to give them something that keeps them quiet, but I would never have given my children ipads at such a young age. All mine had to wait until they were around 11/12 (and not ipads, a cheaper version!) but of course all their friends have the latest gadgets and they want to be like their friends but we don't have playstations or xboxes but parenting is hard work and I would hate to feel that other parents were judging me!
-
I was raised away from child care, i.e. grandparents. Mum stayed at home. Dad went out to work. Normal in those days. We had a sand pit with buckets and small spades; swings in the orchard; scooters, cycles, roller skates. On rainy days Mum would pull out the table and find large sheets, underneath we could have been anywhere. Kids seem not to have a sense of adventure in the same way, nor do they gain 'making up pretend game' skills.
No lego etc.. Lots of colouring books, magic painting ....... now, how did that work ;)
-
We were brought up the same but in those days, you could wander far and wide all day long out playing and our Mum had all day to herself doing housework etc without us under her feet.
I also stayed at home to bring up my children while my husband worked but we don't live in a particularly safe area and so I couldn't let me kids go off playing all day like I did. It just wasn't safe. As I say, each generation is different and each particular child can be more demanding than another. I feel we shouldn't judge other parents when we're out and about. I certainly don't and in fact I quite often give support when a mother may be struggling with the behaviour of her kids.
-
The problem now is both parents work and sometimes at the weekend too, they then come home to shopping, cooking and housework as well as full time jobs. Sadly there's not the time to entertain the kids so the tv and iPad compensate. Also it's not safe to just let them go out to play on the street unsupervised anymore. When I used to get home from school it was all done and my dinner on the table cos Mum was at home and I was lucky to be able to do this too until my three were older and I went back to work just part time. We can't wait for our holidays so that we can spend 24/7 with the kids on the beach, in the pool and no sign of a Tele or iPad.
-
I'm off to Benidorm On Wednesday again to the sol pelicanis where they film the tv show Benidorm,I can't wait sheer escapism for 5 whole days, better be warmer this time though.xx

I heard on TV today that its the start of the late deal bargains. Holidays any time in the next 8 weeks. I am going to try to persuade OH to take another weeks holiday in early Sept. Trouble is the person who sees to our horses wont be able to do it again this year and he wont trust them to anybody who we dont know is totally reliable.

Fingers crossed for you PF

DO check the times of the Chunnel. Due to the heat :o the air conditioning keeps failing, apparently it isn't designed to work over 30D!!!! 1 can cancel out-going tickets and get money back but can use the return ticket to get back to England. It means booking a ferry though and those are very busy anyway ::)
Scotland is lovely. Enjoy the break Lanzalover. Tnk goodness there is plenty to do in the UK ;-)
-
Oh Lanza,
How lovely,
We went to Scotland years ago, and before we left , England-and Scotland had a massive dumping of
snow, but we still went. Lol
We drove up to Inverness, stayed in a log type cabin, and it was -20 degrees. Lol
I've never felt cold like it......
It was only me and OH, and our dog. The snow was that deep, our dogs legs sank in the snow right up to her belly,it looked like she had no legs in photos......lol
But the mountains were something else. Totally beautiful.
Have a great time Lanza, you deserve it.......

But I do love having a nose around the shops. OH always says, how the bloody hell are we gonna get that back! Because I've bought something so big....lol
So now I don't bother, but I like having something from the country I've visited.
As a reminder......

4 weeks today I'll be leaving for Rome ,Pompeii and Capri for 9 days, very excited.no flying this time we've booked a luxuria coach trip with all the tours, these are my favourite kind of holidays, nice bit of culture and fabulous shopping 😂😘

Looks like we will be having a second holiday this year in September. Not sure when or where yet but it will be abroad.
-
How lovely PF!
That's because you aren't used to stay-cation Lanzalover ;)
-
Morning
I do like weekends away in this country if you could be guaranteed good weather we probably wouldn't go abroad as the UK has some really beautiful places for holidays/long weekends.
We are having a long weekend in Bath next month and Llandudno in October fingers crossed the weather is kinder.
Lucky you PF September is a lovely month to holiday in Europe.
Lanzalover x
-
Even with the hot weather here I still prefer to go abroad for the food, the more relaxed way of life at a much slower pace, the child friendly restaurants and bars and the clear warm blue sea. Also your money goes a lot further. 8)
-
I like to go abroad because the hotels are better, everywhere is cleaner, the weather is more guaranteed and its excellent value for money.
I have taken many breaks in this country and stayed in hotels and they really are not a patch on hotels abroad. I did enough holidaying in this country when the kids were small and money was tight!
-
We don't, complain enough ::). I don't think that we say 'thank you' to those in service industries either. We went to a Hotel in Brighton eversomany years ago and the on-line photos were great, think that they had nicked them off someone else's website 'cos the place was run down and needed several coats of paint plus a bit of organisation as the staff were Bulgarian. However. It was the most comfy place we had stayed in a long time ;D and on the back of that weekend we bought our Very Large Bed :D. I did have a chat to the Owner about the lack of organisation and he thanked me - they were new and he put my points forwards whilst we were having breakfast the next morning. Quiet civilised.

My daughter and I stayed in a hotel in Bournemouth overlooking the sea. the room we were given looked out on the car park. It was tiny. When you opened the bathroom door it actually hit the bed. Every single drawer was broken. The room stank of mould. The wooden window frames were rotten. the wallpaper was all hanging off around the windows. The bathroom was like something out of the 60s with the most ancient shower head you ever saw with just a trickle of water coming out. All the tiles were slimey and cracked. We complained and they said they had no other rooms. I sent photos to the coach company we booked with and by the next morning we were given a large room with sea view, cane furniture etc. It was by no means perfect but a lot better. I have never encountered poor quality rooms like this abroad.
-
Because mainland Europeans wouldn't put up with it. They would pack up and move to another hotel. I have done that in the past in the UK ...... can't remember why but we simply upped and went the next morning :-\. We have also done so abroad, when camping: if the stand over the hole in the ground loos weren't spotless :o, we moved to the next site !
-
Rome is definitely on our list for next year, or the year after ::). Have a lovely time.
We are off in 10 days to do a river cruise on the Danube. Fly to Budapest then down to Vienna and back again. Really looking forward to it but looks like the weather will be 30 degrees plus. Oh well should be used to it by now. Packing lots of shorts and tee shirts and the boat is fully air conned.
Love river cruising. Lots of scenery and no sea sickness. :sick02:
-
Enjoy your trips Girls :foryou:
>wave< Daisydot ............
No plans for us. TOO warm. Too much to do in the garden each evening, plus keeping the ponds topped up. We haven't been to Bath for 20+ years ......... so many places to see, so little time ::)
-
Hi all,
I'm new on here. Hope you all enjoy what ever breaks you have planned. We are off to Malta in September for a week. This is really adventurous for me as I don't like flying! and I am leaving the house under the care of my 19 year old son who has lots of friends who like to party! I had a good day back in March and thought I can do it!! My earliest memories are of Malta as my dad was stationed there. I'm just hoping my anxieties don't spoil it.
-
Fingers crossed for you, Shropshirelass! Maybe take a lavender bag along with you? (I do, for anxiety purposes)
Hope you have a great time - and welcome to the forum! :welcomemm:

I would be worrying about leaving a 19 year old home alone :o! Does your Insurance cover teen parties?
It's too hot even to think of going anywhere right now ::). Fortunately we have shade around the plot so we can get out of the :sunny:. If I went away and was unable to go out and about I would feel the trip was wasted ::). Next week however >:( :D
-
Goodness CLKD, 19 is a adult. I was married at 20. :o
-
Two weeks on Saturday and counting here we come Rome, can't wait to see how much of it I remember lol it's been years since my last trip there.last time I went I got talking to the lady who feeds the feral cats at the coliseum, the government pays her to look after them as it helps keep the vermin down,I wonder if she's still doing it ,that's on my to do list I'll load up my suitcase with stinky cat food lol I also got told you now have to pay to go into St. Peter's square so again be interesting to see if that's factual. We are going by legers luxuria coach this time,no flying, the coaches are just beautiful so well thought out for touring.very excited 😘/ Jeanie

She's still doing it! The sanctuary is called Torre Argentina Cats Sanctuary. I've got a sweatshirt from the shop. Website used to be www.gattidiroma.com. or romancats.org

I was in love by 16 ;D. Engaged at 21. Married 8 months later :-* :-*
However. Adult or not ............. I would be wary! OK in his own property :-X maybe leave him the phone number of a local cleaning Company ;)

He is good at feeding the cat though and at least I wont have to listen to his friends slamming the door as they go to the toilet until 5.00am three days a week when I'm not here. That's me being super positive!

Goodness CLKD, 19 is a adult. I was married at 20. :o
Haha, I had two kids by 20! Such a long time ago

Gosh, aren't we getting old. :-[

Off to Lanzarote next week, can't wait to see my family. There's seven of us going including grandchildren and staying for about 3 weeks. Stocked up on all my meds and will remember to keep in the fridge! I think it will actually feel cooler there with the wind and if not there's always the sea. 8)
-
3 weeks in Lanzarote that's my idea of heaven I'm sure you'll all have a great time.
Any room in your luggage for me ;D
Lanzalover x
-
Funny thing is Deirdre,
My OH, said today that he'd love a long holiday in lanzarote for about
3 weeks! What a coincidence..........lol
He loves that place, would love to live there permanently.
Maybe one day.....
Enjoy it, hope you have a great time.....
Jdx
-
My cousin does. Live there ::) but no fear of us visiting as we don't fly :-\
-
Can you 🏊 swim. ;D
-
As long as I don't have to shave my legs, then yes.
Will be away next week so probably out of Wifi range ::)
-
From the Devon BBC News
Dad 'marks' schools boss's holiday fine letter - worth a look-see. Me, I think it disgusting that the Education Authorities think it necessary to fine parents. After all, every day is a learning curve !
-
It's a pointless exercise. Even paying the fines parents still save money on the cost of a holiday.
Too much interference. 1984 springs to mind.
-
Yep. But if you said '1984' to anyone these days, they would wonder in the same way as they wonder what a red 'phone box might be ::)
It's about OFSTED reports in schools, not education. :-X . Instead of encouraging as much travel and out of school experiences as possible! Choosing the holiday destination; packing the suitcase; carrying passports and visas = organisational skills; exploring new cultures = geography and history; new foods = Domestic Science; weather changes = meterology .......... reading a book instead of being on a device due to no wifi ..... skin care after swimming and when in the sunshine = self awareness.
-
This subject is always a minefield. I believe that if it's seen as ok to remove children for holidays during term time then it should also be ok for staff to also take their holidays at any time. An LSA in a primary school will have to pay between £900 and £1100 for a uk apartment during the holidays which, on the 7th September, will drop in price to around £500. They also only get paid for 20 days holiday a year meaning they are unpaid for the other 9 weeks total holiday. The whole system needs reviewing.
Taz :-\
-
Good morning
Just out interest what's an LSA ?
Many thanks
Lanzalover x
-
I think it's a Learning Support Assistant, Lanzalover. :)
-
Yes. Sorry it does stand for Learning Support Assistant which usually means working one to one with a child. Teaching Assistants are also in the same boat re fairly low salary but only able to take holiday during the most expensive times.
Taz x
-
However. Teachers get a whole 6 weeks holiday ;)
As for teachers going into schools to be with pupils when they get their Exam results, what's that about! What's wrong with them receiving a brown envelope at home with parents to deal with the results?
-
Some people have jobs where there are restrictions on when they can take their annual leave. If that doesn't fit with school holidays what are they supposed to do.
It used to be the case that it was at the discretion of the school. Now its all super official with no wriggle room. Common sense gone out of the window again.
-
Teachers get paid for the 6 weeks though CLKD but support staff don't which was my point.
Taz x 😊
-

They say it's so they can support them, but my three boys would all rather have received brown envelopes at home. It seems to be a bit of a circus to me. They actually stage the pre-invited kids jumping for joy when they receive their fabulous results, no pictures of the poor kids who are in tears
-
If teachers didn't have to go into Schools etc. they would get the full holiday allotted to them! Our College Results were posted on a board in the corridor :-\. So everyone saw everyone's reactions >:(
My neighbour does support but I don't agree with it. Cheap labour .......... education authorities should pay full whack or employ teachers.
Will be away from wifi next week :-\
-
Thanks for the reply re LSA makes complete sense now sorry must still have been half asleep this morning when I read it as I just couldn't figure it out ;D

I know that feeling Lanzalover!

Off to East Sussex next month for 5 days staying in a cottage Nr Lewes with the out laws :).
-
Love Lewes. Lots of antique shops, the castle and if you like beer, the brewery.
The very first original Bills is there too. I can remember when it was just a green grocers with a cafe attached.
How times change.

Hi Daisydot,
Might be worth a trip to the docs, if it doesn't clear. Sometimes it can be a sign of infection. I had a persistent tummy problem once that turned out to be a kidney infection.
Better safe than sorry.

Off tomorrow to Wales for a few days for a sort-of holiday ::). I expect it will rain!

It might rain but Wales is beautiful and the rain means it's fairly unspoilt. Enjoy!

Back home from a Duty Visit :-\
LOVE Lewes and Brighton - train trip between the two doesn't take long as Brighton is such a bg to park in ::).

Who? Me? Enjoyable in parts [long story short].
-
Tnx. We did actually now you've jogged my memory. In between chores and visiting Mum we went out for a meal. One evening we had the main meal the next we had 'pudding' ;D. I had a lemon and lime cheesecake with white chocolate ice cream and a banana drizzle sauce. Far too much for me ....... tasty but filling.

For everyone going away have a lovely time.
Pleased to hear you managed to have some enjoyable moments during your duty visit.
Hope your Mum was ok.

We are going to Bath tomorrow for a long weekend.
Taking youngest DGD with us and meeting up with middle son his partner and our other DGD looking forward to seeing them and it beats work.
Unfortunately my friend now cann't make our planned trip to Rome in October so it's back to the drawing board with that one !!!! we will get there but at this rate it may be for her 61st birthday rather than 60th ;D

That's just brilliant daisydot.
Good on your behalf too, don't think I'd have thought to do that myself.
I would have sorted something out while I was there.....good one.
Can't wait for next year when we get to go away, it seems ages since we went and it was only last September, but mindyou, it was only 5 days In Majorca.(had to get back for OHs mother) and the weather was crap......
Never mind, roll on next year....lol
-
I am off to Italy (Bologna) for a week in September to join my Swedish friend for an Italian language course combined with holiday. At the end I also have a half day in Venice because Bologna airport is closed for maintenance for several days. I have to fly back from there. I am tempted to book another mini trip in October but haven't decided where yet. Probably only 3-4 days.
-
Daisydot - will you take emergency supplies in case ........
I would love to be able to speak Italian ::)
Nowt planned yet.
-
I usually have rich tea biscuits, ginger biscuits, bananas to hand when travelling. As well as a couple of bottles of Coke and of water.
-
You are very organised Daisydot.
Have a lovely holiday.

I'm getting really nervous about my Malta holiday a week on Monday. Don't usually do abroad (scared of flying and don't like the heat, why am I going?!) Haven't sorted anything. Daren't book any trips in case I don't feel up to it so am going to have to be more spontaneous than usual. I am a complete control freak who ultra plans everything.
My handbag is already stuffed full of snacks for just in case
Have a great time Daisydot
-
Take Rescue Remedy in your bag just in case you panic, glass of wine on the flight and you'll be fine. It's only a shortish flight.

Sounds fab Katejo- Bologna is a place I would like to visit - having seen one of Rick Sten's weekends there! I've promised my daughter we will do a long weekend there sometime! Course sounds great - you could start yourself off with a free online course eg Duolingo or Memrise?

I do all the booking Littleminnie. all he has to do is get on the plane! ;D
he says its too soon after our last holiday which was first week in JUNE! ::)

You'll have to book it PF and then it will be a fete accomplis. Littleminnie is the rescue remedy any good? Never tried that chardonnay is my go to anxiety relief!

Hi all im cutting my trip short, ive really struggled with the Ibs and the hotel has been fantastic catering for me while I'm here but last night was the worst night ever I had some vegetable soup and the pain all night was awful in my back and left ribs then horrible trots and nausea followed,I can't enjoy being away from my safe place when I'm like this it's so humiliating too.The one thing I wanted to do was Capri but that was today and there was no way I could manage it,never mind there's always next time I guess.my ibs tablets are not even touching it.
I've booked flights back for tomorrow so I'll just chill at hotel till then,we've enjoyed what we did do on the tours but it's time to call it quits now.😘
Oh dear Daisydot, what a shame! X
-
Oh daisydot,
What a shame honey.
I'm gutted for you .
But you know what's best for you, and if you want to get home then
you'll feel better and that will help YOU get better won't it....
Like you say, there's a next time.
So sorry daisy,
Take care babe,
Jdx
-
Our own bathroom. Our own bed. Best place! You got there, that's a start! Anxiety can make IBS etc. much worse :'(
-
Whereas me, I would be worrying about being on the plane ::) - how long is the flight?
-
One that you can write off in the big scheme of things ;). Expected time of arrival and how do you get home then? Cycling .........
-
Oh don't get me started on cats when owners are away ;D. Someone locally has a large ginger tom - and two small females. AND a cat flap. He came home earlier than expected recently, walked in to find every chair, window sill, table; filled with cats that weren't his own . Seems that Big Boy [the Tom] had invited his friends around 8). Apparently he got 'the look' ..........
-
It's the way Big Boy turned round, gave him 'the look' and then the other cats quietly left ..........
-
Sorry to hear that Daisydot. Hope you feel better soon and safe journey home x
-
Home yet?
-
Hi DaisyDot. So sorry to read you've had to cut your holiday short because of health issues. I totally understand where you're coming from and when you're feeling ill, all you want to do is be in the comfort of your own home. This awful hormone/stomach stuff has impacted every holiday we've had this year and on every occasion, I've been so glad to get home. It makes me very sad as I've always loved our holidays. As you say though, hopefully you will feel better when you next have the opportunity to get away.
I really hope you feel better soon DD.
Rosie xx
-
Glad your home safe and sound x
-
Welcome back.

In a way DD, I expect it would be a relief if it was a virus and not another little gem caused by hrt. I hope the dinner stayed put and you're starting to feel better.

Algarve on Tuesday :) :) :) :) :)

Back from hols in Lanzarote had amazing time, absolutely shattered it's hard keeping up with the younger family members but wouldnt have it any other way. I can sleep now I'm back! Had no problems whatsoever with atrophy while away which makes me now seriously consider an earlier retirement as my job sitting all day (even though I now have a custom built chair) is obviously the problem as well as the long hours, stress etc etc.sometimes 9 hours a day. Going back to lanzarote again in October so have a lot of decisions to make.
-
Feeling really anxious about our Malta hol on Monday.Deep breaths!
-
I know that feeling too well. We are having a day out on Wed. and my anxiety is up already :'(
-
Feeling really anxious about our Malta hol on Monday.Deep breaths!
Hope you got away ok? I leave on Sunday for Bologna so my usual pre holiday worries are back.
-
Hope everyone going away has a wonderful time .
Lanzalover x
-
Everyone have a great time while away,
Hopefully stress free.
You all deserve it, so enjoy.....
-
Why do we all stress now when going away, I know I worry about the taxi being late, I check everything in my bag about 5 times on the way to the airport, I worry about being ill on holiday blah blah blah. When we were younger none of this stuff even crossed our minds, ever, we just didn't care or we were more positive in our thinking. Why do we over think everything and usually negatively.. If this is being older and wiser it sucks.
-
I have always been anxious about any changes in the household :-\
-
Exactly Deirdre
Why do we keep worrying over silky little things.
It's an awful feeling.
I can't stop myself. ???
-
When we get there I usually have a great time and wonder why I was worrying, but then a day or two before coming home it all starts again. It spoils the excitement of going away and also the last couple of days of the holiday. I wish I could think more positively and not always expect the worst to happen because 9 times out of 10 it don't. I've noticed people that do think positive about everything seem to have more stress free lives, I'm going to try it.
-
I still wish that I could whizz through my holiday and get home, so that I know if I've been OK - then go back and really enjoy it [clear as mud?]
-
Couldn't sleep CLKD?
I often get funny tum when abroad (husband never does!) and don't go anywhere without my Immodium - always does the trick, along with my trusty indigestion tabs for when I wake in the night and can't sleep from too much rich food. It's all part of the holiday ::). I'm like a travelling medicine cabinet - fortunately don't need to use half of it but it's a comfort blanket to have it all there including the migraine tabs, various pain-killers, Lemsip, alkaseltzer, HRT (patches, Utrogestan, Tesosterone gel, vagifem) ) ;D
Seems a long time ago since my last proper hol.....(early August!!!). Not got another one until next year now and nothing planned except in July....

I'm back safe and sound. I was so anxious before mainly because of flying and worrying whether I would be well or not and how hot it would be. Well I hated flying though it was smooth, no delays etc. I played a 2 hour game of scrabble with OH on plane to take my mind off it so the journey went pretty quick. It was awfully hot, too hot for me and even OH who doesn't mind the heat found it too much especially as we are explorers rathers than sitters on beaches. Should have gone in April! My fault for assuming it would be cooler in September not 35 degrees! As for being unwell I felt great and Malta is a really beautiful, interesting place.
I feel just like you CLKD that I'd like to wizz through and know everything is all ok so I could really realax.
Have decided though, no more planes, unless really short flights. It's not worth acute anxiety for at least 4 days and there's so many beautiful places in the UK. Next year Edinburgh on the train (don't like cars either!!)
Hope everyone's hols have gone well
-
:thankyou: Shropshirelass - you get it!
Was the 'bit' in-between OK? We have a list of places to visit in the UK here somewhere ::)
-
Yeah the bit in between was pretty good, thanks, but it was stiffling. Having an evening meal by the sea was lovely as the temperature and humidity dropped down a bit
We plan to do Leeds as well as Edinburgh next year as I've never been. We'll also go to Harlech as that's one of our usual haunts. Any places in the UK you'd recommend CLKD?

I was supposed to be in Bologna now but didn't go due to being unwell, However my Swedish friend who is there has told me that it is very hot there too (30 C instead of the usual approx 24-26 which we have had in previous years). Last year it was cool and wet there.

Lanzalover x
My comment here was just meant to be about the hot weather rather than my health. I am feeling better now but that is just infuriating in a way as I should probably have gone on the trip! I may well book it again for next year. No good for this year because I already have a mini break booked in October.
-
You did what was correct 4 U at the time ;)
I have to go away on Sunday >sigh<
-
Off to Suffolk tomorrow. Staying in a National Trust cottage at Dunwich.
Not really in a very holiday mood at the moment, but am sure that will change.
High winds expected on Sunday so hope we don't get blown into the sea. :o
-
Have a good time.
The wind can be exciting, but don't get blown away!

I couldn't understand why a reporter was telling the public about the risks of these high winds: she was standing on the roof of a building ;D :-\ ........ no H&S there then!
Enjoy Suffolk. Hunker down in front of a wood burner with a glass of something ?

Have a lovely time Shadyglade,

How did you guess ;D .......... might. We are going to her house to do more clearing of the garden, taking advantage of the weather. If we aren't too tired to put up her shenanigans [sp] we might drop by but she is busy with the routine :-X

We're in Spain and my god I'm not coping with the heat this year, I'm spending most of my time in the shade as there's just no breeze.
Still loving it though :)
-
Oh, lucky you, Annie0710.
What part in Spain you at?
Hope you have a lovely time,
Have a drink for me,
Get in that pool n cool off.....lol........lovely...
Xx
-
Hi Annie0710
Sorry you are suffering from the heat I used to love it the hotter the better but find it more challenging these days. That's one of the reasons why we go to Lanzarote as there's always a breeze which is helpful. It is currently very hot in Lanzarote so it appears to be all over Europe.
Like you I find a place in shade and stay there you still get a tan but not the burnt crisp look which isn't a good look anyway and not good for your skin.
We also have a couple days out inland which is also cooler than the coast.
I also need a breeze or air com for a good nights sleep.
I suppose you'll just have to drink a lot but don't forget the water. ;D
At least your having a good time enjoy.
Lanzalover x

We go to our friends villa in Nerja each September. Today we're in Malaga as we're dropping my brother off at the airport. Definitely cooler today which will be nice
Villa doesn't have a pool so I've been sitting in the tiny Teeniest paddling pool on the balcony !
Been keeping fluids up with Bacardi and sangria lol x

I'll let you know when they have the Calima Lanzalover, my family live there.
-
What's a Calima?
-
Hi jillydoll
It's a hot, opressing dust and sand laden wind which blows from North Africa and the Sahara everything gets covered in a sandy dust and the wind can feel like someone is constantly blowing a hot hairdryer in your face.
Visability is considerably reduced during a Calima but fortunately they only last between one and three days. It can however cause problems for people with respiratory problems.
Hope that makes sense jillydoll.
It would be really helpful if you could update me Dierdre as our friends are returning home at the weekend so won't have Intel on the ground 😀
Lanzalover x
-
Is that all over Lanzalover, my cousin hasn't mentioned it.
Camper packed. Cases and food to put in early tomorrow.

As far as I am aware CLKD it affects the whole island.
How long are you away for ?
Lanzalover x
-
Yeah, that's great Lanza, now I know what it is. Thanx...
Have a safe trip CLKD.
Don't get locking anyone's cat in anywhere! Lol
Take care, xx

Off to Abu Dhabi tomorrow ladies. Ten years ago I would have been sooo excited. Now I am a bag of worry about not sleeping, panic attacks, being ill on holiday. I can honestly say I have not had one holiday in the last five years where I haven't had health anxiety rear its head. Any tips on how I can kick it into touch and just enjoy myself. I feel like a dog in a manger. :'(

I totally understand your worry because I worry every time I have to go abroad especially if I have to fly! It always fine once I'm there - and even usually once I've actually driven away from the house all packed up and have locked the door behind me!
Have a great time, go with the flow, enjoy the sunshine - you'll be fine when you get there! If you don't sleep one night - then sleep in the next or sleep in the day - you're on holiday. If you're ill you're ill but at least there is noweher else you need to be or do :)

Valium! for 3 days prior to the journey. Too late for this time though.
-
4 and bit sleeps (have to be up at silly o clock on Thursday for our flight) can't wait, and only 4 days work :)

-
Is it wrong that I'm envious? Even though I flew back from Spain less than a week ago after 2 weeks there !!! X
-
Rosenheath I completely emphasise with your health anxiety and being ill abroad, hope it all goes well xx
-
Off to Abu Dhabi tomorrow ladies. :'(
I have exactly the same problem so I hope you got away ok? I ended up cancelling 1 trip in September and then regretted it. I have another mini break coming up in 2-3 weeks from now and I am determined to get there this time. Going to Turin.
-
Fianaly ready can't wait for tomorrow

How's your day been so far LanzoL?
-
Home yesterday after a 12 night canaries and Morocco cruise from Southampton. Really really enjoyed it, Morocco was so interesting and the tour guide was so funny and informative, before we arrived there we felt a bit nervous because of things I'd read about the aggressive selling techniques but there was no need. A shame we left before the snake charmers turned up but we saw the fortune tellers getting ready in the square, it had been such a hot day the charmers don't turn up until the evening when it's cooler, and I don't blame them ;D
Our other favourite port was Madeira, very chatty shop owners and lovely coffee and Portuguese custard tarts ::) we also did a wine tasting in a vineyard in Galicia Spain, of course we enjoyed it ;) and had a scenic drive around the beautiful coast. The remaining ports were in Lisbon, Lanzarote, Gran canaria and la Corunna, all very nice and the weather was good apart from thunder and lightening as we arrived in Madeira but I enjoyed watching it from the balcony.
The worst thing is I now have a mountain of washing waiting and it's bowing a gale and pouring with rain, maybe I won't be needing my summer clothes for a while so I'm in no hurry to tackle it but if anyone would like to volunteer I won't refuse ::)
-
Two Hoots
Sounds very nice. Wish I was going on a cruise... :(
I love custard tarts.. :P
my OH, would love a cruise, but we can't get away. He loves the canaries.
Maybe next year or the year after....
Glad you enjoyed it, back to reality now I'm afraid.... :o
Don't you wish holidays would never be over..? Lol
-
Sounds lovely Two Hoots. Was there not a laundry service on board?
-
Love the Portuguese custard tarts.
-
I think the charge for laundry was $35 per bag, I have no idea if it's a carrier bag size or a bin liner size bag, I didn't look at the time but I'm still hoping for a volunteer who has better weather than me ;D
-
We probably have - a sheet went onto the line 30 mins ago and is now back on the bed, two wooden pegs broken in the process ::)
-
If your sheet was in the line here one if two things would happen:
1. It would be so wet and heavy you wouldn't be able to carry it. Or
2. You would have to go to Ireland to reclaim it in this gale.
::)
-
Pleased to hear you had a good holiday Two hoots I've always fancied Maderia one off these days.
If you send your washing over I'll have it done in no time 😄 Only joking.
The washing is the worst part of a holiday.

3 weeks today and I'll be back in Lanzarote yipeeeee

Hi LL... Ive lost track... arent you there now? Or are you such an addict you rebooked another holiday?? :yipi:
Do you have a place over there?
We're currently on our second annual visit to our villa in Spain.. but not stopped working (work from "home") so its not really felt like a holiday! Now the weather has turned... just my luck... lol
2019 we return in April then again in September...
Anyone got any other holidays booked for this year?
-
Off to York on Friday for 3 nights. Going for the BBC History weekend. Lots of time for shopping and sightseeing as well.
-
Hi Nikkisyard
I'm back in the UK now this last trip was just for 5 nights (last minute decision)but it was a really relaxing few days.
Our trip next month has been booked for ages as we always have 2 weeks in November.
We did own an apartment in Lanzarote but we sold it last year it was an ideal lock up and leave property but not big enough for the whole family (bought when we only had one grandchild ;D )
All the family are going for New Year as middle son will be 40 while we are there so we have rented two 3 bed villas next door to each other.
We may buy something bigger when we retire as we both would like to spend our winters somewhere warmer than the UK.
Enjoy your break.

-
1 sheet had to be pegged tightly in the wind :o but it was soon dry. No need to search for it though thanks Two Hoots for the offer ;D
Nowt booked - yet.

Oh that sounds great! Enjoy!!
LL I get it now :)
New Year sounds like it will be a dream... I adore big family do's. Our villa is a 3 bed.. fine for if some of the family come but no chance if the whole tribe descend!... We are hoping for that next easter... might have to look out for some z-beds!
CLKD whats your ideal vacation?
-
Enjoy shadyglade, have a great time.
-
In bed. Being waited on ........ lots of bubble baths ...........
I would love to go to the Italian Lakes but anxiety keeps me closer to home. It is simply a lack of time ......... we get plenty of enjoyable days out though ;) which means my own bath and bed each night.

Weekends away at some of the UKs beautiful Guest Houses and B&Bs are what I used to love when I had a demanding 9-5... get to explore some exquisite corners of the country... Splashing out on those with a lovely rolltop bath really topped it off for me...
Id like to explore the cities of the world now... totally need countryside/mountains but to dip into city life as a tourist is on my bucket list....
-
Several years ago we thought about selling up, buying a small flat so that we could spend 6 months in an area of the UK to really find out what was on offer; then moving to another area for 6 months: but I love my garden too much ;D
York is lovely. So much history, one could live there and not see it all. Chester is another place ........
-
Going to Llandudno Friday lunch time for the weekend. Although DH says it's going to be cold 😳 I'll have to look out my winter clothes !!!
Lanzalover x
-
Snow is forecast in Scotland ;D ......... have a look-see at the local weather forecast?
-
Don't know if I can pluck up the courage at the moment ;D but at least we won't have snow ☃ well I hope not.
Lanzalover x .
-
Oh go on, have a look-see ;D
-
Just had a look 10 Friday 8 Sat and 9 Sunday will need to wrap up.
Lanzalover x
-
Get those layers working then. Bright colours. Handbag to match?
-
Had a lovely weekend in Llandudno although it was very cold and windy.
The firework display planned for Saturday night was cancelled due to the high winds.
Plus DH bought me a pair of new boots and a handbag result.
Now looking forward to Lanzarote a week on Wednesday 😎
Lanzalover x
-
Glad that you went - was it cold?
Have to do a Duty Visit next week and again mid-November. Not a holiday though :-\
-
Yes cold and extremely windy.
But we had a good time
Lanzalover x
-
That's good. Haven't been there for over 35 years ::)
-
Sadly Venice is under feet of water after dreadful storms across Italy :'(
-
They have had very heavy rain in Italy. Hope everyone's ok.
A week to go until our holiday to Lanzarote yipeeeee and I'm off at the weekend so we were planning on going away with DGD for the weekend as we won't see her for 4 weeks :( however the forecast doesn't look very good for the weekend typical.

Lol Lanza, I can tell,
you called me Jillydot.........lol. ( Hic). :drunklaf:
-
........ but leave my books behind ?
-
Watching the BBC film of balconies being swept off hi-rise flats in Tenerife! :o :o
-
Yeah, that's what I posted about yesterday to Lanza....
She said it had missed them, so that's good news. 🌊⛈
-
Seeing it in reality never fails to amaze me as to the power of Nature
-
I know CLKD, it's just mind blowing.
You don't want to mess about with her.....😲
-
I'm off to Lanzarote in less than 3 weeks and lanza has promised me she's left the sun there for me.she def didn't bring it back here 😂😘
-
She certainly left it behind ::). R U packed yet ;D
-
If I'm honest yes I did start to pack but I've had a rethink and I'm removing half of it to swop with lightweight jumpers and jeans.i get so cold and the thought of trying to eat dinner when I'm chittering puts me right off lol.at least that way I can do layers if I'm cold and I'll be travelling in a fleece so I'll be ready for anything ;D.bikini can just be vest top and knickers I'm like a wee skinny Minnie now so ill get away with it lol.😘
-

Will be there the end of December, look out for p&o cruise ship, meet you for drinks 😄
-
Roll on the 28th December I'll be back in Lanzarote for New Year.
Although not happy as our flight has been moved from 6.40 am to 3.50 pm do feel like we have lost a day :'(
DH decided he would book the Escape room as you get free food and drinks and as we are going with family it would be cheaper than paying for lunch and a couple of drinks in a restaurant at the airport however you can't book for more than 6 people (I think to try and stop hen and stag parties) DH rang and explained we were family and had small children with us but was advised they couldn't accommodate any more large parties so we have made two separate bookings so we'll have to chance we can all sit together :bang:
Lanzalover x
-
4 anyone going away soon: ENJOY!
:foryou: Do it whilst you are able to. I have to do a Duty Visit from 23 and hopefully back 28th. Weather allowing.
I'm already packing in the back of my mind ::)
-
Virgin Atlantic on strike from 20th December :o
-
So that will be Scotland off our list then >:(. :'(
Their Government is in consultation about charging an extra £2.00 per tourist per night charge as a 'tax' . Well actually. Nope. We put monies into the local areas that we visit: either by paying for a hotel room/food, B&B, Guest House, Camping site ........ we tend to eat in cafes etc., buy post cards and other items .......... we eat breakfast where we stay and other meals when we are hungry. We pay car park charges already. We go to Charity shops for books ........
How will B&B etc. decide who are visitors and who are commercial travellers or people working in the area? I suppose those visitors from abroad/US will be totally unaware anyway but here, in England >:(
-
Aww sorry to hear that clkd ☹️
It does sound diabolical,I've not heard about this, how do they know who's a “tourist “ though?
-
I'm off to Lanzarote on 30th for New Year to visit family 🤗 The've just had another calima, strange for December but it's been hotter the last few days than in June, hope it lasts. 😎
-
Wow someone else away to lanzarote!! We should've timed this right ladies and all met up😄
-
That was our thought pattern. If I go for a day trip anywhere even into my local town, surely I'm a tourist ::). We love North of Chester and have plans to go into Scotland in 2019/20. Anxiety allowing :-\. Also, how will the powers that be share out the monies gained? Will it go into the Council pot, back to those supplying services; improve the roads for all ...........
-
Ha,Scottish roads the worst in the country, when I moved to lovely englandshire I couldn't believe how fab the roads were, hardly any potholes unlike Scotland 🤨
-
You didn't move south enough then ;D ....... plenty of pot holes around here! They have to be a certain dept in cm B4 the Council will arrange for repair.
-
In Kent they are still repairing last winters potholes.
-
Apparently if the Councils got together and began fixing pot holes across the UK, it would take 12 years to complete the jobs!
-
Wish they would fix them here in Birmingham,
I'm fed up with OH moaning about em.....😂
-
Well I've decided not to attempt Lanzarote in the morning my gut and ribs have flared up again and the thought of being stuck in a hotel bathroom again has lost it's appeal I'm afraid,i just cant face it.I thought I'd cracked it with this gut/rib pain but somethings obviously rattled it again so I think I'm safer to stay at home and hopefully it'll ease off again.i feel a selfish pig to hubby but what was the point in putting us under more stress with me ill and moaning about pain.ill beat this if it kills me.my gps are as usual bloody useless.wish I could find a Dr Chatterjee locally lol.hes brilliant.never mind back to the books DD😘
-
Oh DD so sorry to hear this so disappointing for you.
Hope you'll soon feel better
Take care
Lanzalover x
-
What a shame DD,sorry you're not feeling well but I do agree with your decision, absolutely no point if you're poorly.get better soon x
-
Thanks ladies more money down the drain.only thing I managed to claw back was my car parking at airport.ins won't cover me for holiday loss.
I've actually managed to get an online appointment with a locum this afternoon so you never know I may actually get a decent gp this time the partners are hopeless.my stomach actually feels fluey this morning so it may just be a bug that has flared everything up again I hope so.of course in my head as usual it's terminal lol.never mind lazy day in the frost for me today 😂DD😘
-
Do you feel better now that the decision not to travel has been made?
-
Do you feel better now that the decision not to travel has been made?
[/quote]
No I am glad but I feel rough.saw a nice gp today so unfortunately it's the hpylori again so it's back to a higher dose triple therapy to try and knock it out, if it doesent work this time then he said theyll do further investigations.this lot will probably knock the stuffing out me in not happy about it but no other choice really the pains so bad.never mind I'll just plod away again thanks every one 😘DD
-
Why hasn't previous treatment worked? :-\
-
::)
It hasn't worked because hpylori has become very resistant to most antibiotics so they have to try different combinations each time to wipe it out.its obviously very harsh on the body having to do this and for someone like me with recorded allergies to quite a few of the antibiotics it's difficult for any gp to get that right combination that's not going to damage me further.i find it very scary and a bit of a trial trying to get the timings right and because of the pain of the stomach ulcers this thing causes i have to watch my food intake so carefully, it's one of the worst problems I've had to deal with and really pulls me down so I really do feel for all these other ladies suffering gastric issues.I have quite a library of gut books now lol I'm determined to beat it but it does rule your life like it or not and I'm annoyed at losing my holiday as I had some naughty plans in mind for hubby 😉
-
Hello DD,
Sorry you're still struggling with this little bastard, but glad you haven't lost your excellent sense of humour. I hope you can get rid of it asap 🤗
Some exciting news on the H. pylori front.

So a drone/s has brought our country to a halt as well as disrupting Airports across the World >:(. Again the Government was caught on the hop as with mobile phone use whilst driving which could have been stopped at source.
-
:o
Australia lashed by 'catastrophic' hail storm
People in parts of Australia are picking up the pieces after summer hail storms wreaked havoc across New South Wales. 'hail stones the size of golf balls' .....
-
I didn't think it would be long once flights began that a drone would appear again :-\ ........ there are lots of anti-drone applications out there apparently, why not deploy them?
-
Six more sleeps (not that I'm counting :sunny: )
Lanzalover x
-
Im counting with you LL DD😘
-
7 till we come home :D
-
I've got to admit defeat. Cases packed. List of what to take from the fridge/freezer: by the kettle ready to read in the morning. Parcels packed, appropriately labelled ..... will be out of wifi until 27th :-\. I can't even drink to take the edge of the 'fesitivities' .......
-
Hear from you when you get back then CLKD.
It'll soon be over , and we'll soon be back to our normal selves.
Good luck.....🙋♀️
-
tnx. It's the feeling of not being able to change my mind ...... everyone puts so much work into preparations :-\
-
Don't think about now CLKD, focus on what you'll be doing when it's all over.

Back yet Lanzo.? Deidre? Jaypo?
-
I got back yesterday from Lanzarote, had a really relaxing time, weather was great too. Back to work tomorrow though not looking forward to getting up at 6am.
-
We only see 1 6 in the day - that's usually T-time ;)
Pleased you are back safely. Booked to go again yet?
-
Going for 3 weeks in August with family but might try and get a cheap flight in April and stay with family for a few days to rejuvenate again, feel so much better after being in the sun and getting some vitamin d.
-
It really does help to see a bright sky!
-
Hellooooooooooooo ladies,a very happy new year to you all.
Had a lovely cruise & canaries were warm, just perfect, unfortunately Madeira peed it down but were dry spells too so I could whizz round the shops, poor hubby 😆
My stomach played up a few days so that kinda annoyed me,I actually threw up at 5am new year morning, think it was coz I had champagne at midnight then went straight to bed, I'm such a wimp when it comes to being sick but I did feel better after and slept til 10.30!!!
Anyway got a ct colonoscopy on Wednesday morning, will determine if I've crohns or colitis,I'm still hoping I'm just intolerant to certain foods or drink, I did drink a lot of fresh orange juice as it's sooooooo nice over there,I'm guessing too much acidity bothers my stomach a bit.So tomorrow I've to eat nothing and take that horrid laxative stuff,so you can all picture me on the loo as I reply to some of the posts🚽🧻😂
Nice to have me back? I'm only here to lower the tone.Hope you are all ok
Xxxx
-
I missed you! Juice can be acidic. Let us know how you get on!
-
Missed you too clkd ❤️
-
Hi Jaypo, our cruise called in Madeira in October and it drizzled first thing but dried up later, if they didn't have rain they wouldn't have the beautiful plants ::) I hope the rain didn't stop the fireworks.
Good luck spending your day on the throne tomorrow ::)
-
Hi two hoots 👋 no,the fireworks were spectacular as always,it's a great vantage point from the ship,I'm always speechless by them,I'm sure I heard my oh say something about getting them for home😆
Thank you for your good luck message, I hop you will be thinking about me😳
