Hi
I've recently stopped hrt as it really wasn't agreeing with me one of the main symptoms was total loss of appetite and acid reflux. Since stopping it my appetite is slowly returning but in turn my acid reflux seems 10 times worse its so painful! It hurts in my chest and back and makes me cough I've also got a horrible bitter taste in my mouth! Can anyone relate?? I'm on omeprazole twice a day and have now stopped the hrt completely anyone know how long it may take for the acid to go back to normal?
Thanks for reading
-
Sorry if I've posted in the wrong area I'm really struggling how to post new topics I can't seem to find where to do it
-
Did you have acid reflux before starting the hrt, or are you thinking hrt caused it? What type of hrt were you on? Oral is possibly worse for reflux as it goes through your tummy, but it is also a really common symptom during peri and menopause in general.
How is your diet? You may need to go back to a really bland diet for the short term, avoiding potential reflux triggers like spicy food, citrus fruit, tomatoes, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, maybe even dairy. Important to find out what your personal triggers are as what effects one person might be fine for someone else.
I hope you feel better soon. Search through threads here, reflux comes up a lot!

Hi
Thank you for replying. I've never had acid reflux before starting hrt but I do have a hiatus hernia but it's never caused any problems!! I'm convinced it's the hrt that has triggered it! Maybe the progesterone I'm on 100mg every day plus I'm on a progesterone only pill 75mg!! I'm on oestrogen gel 2 pumps! Since starting it 8 weeks ago I've never been so ill in all my life!!! I stopped it 3 days ago and I'm already starting to feel like me again! I think my doctor really got it wrong as I didn't go to the docs for perimenopause I went about heart palpitations! I know they are a symptom but my bloods showed my fsh level as 8 which is normal reproduction!! Its been a nightmare. I really just need the acid reflux to settle now and I'll be back to being me!!! Thank you :)

What are everyone's symptoms of acid reflux/gerd?
-
Some have full on symptoms of heartburn, acid coming up etc, pain. I get silent reflux / lpr which is basically a burny throat, lump in throat feeling, mucous in throat and some burping. Mine defo started with hrt. And I don't even take utrogestan orally, I use it vaginally but it still bothers me.
I'm no expert but 100mg of utrogestan plus the progrsterone only pill seems like quite a lot of progesterone? It is known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, probably the last thing you need with a hernia!
Also, I started on 1 pump of estrogel as when I'd initially started on 2 it was far too much for me at that time.
Perhaps with you it was simply too much of everything in one go?
-
Yes I totally agree with you I think they overdosed me with progesterone and the 2 pumps were just too much. I get chest and back pains too! I really wish I'd never started the damn stuff as I didn't even go to the doctors with perimenopause in the first time! I'm just glad that I'm not feeling as awful as I was and since stopping the hrt I am starting to feel myself again
Thank you for your advice x

I've had indigestion since a small child = Milk of Magnesia worked.
In recent years I've had reflux - a nasty feeling of liquid coming up into my mouth to the point that I dribble >:(. Not a good look! I have to sleep sitting up.
A few weeks ago I was advised to stop the Omprazlol [long story short] = rebound cough and reflux. Awful. Back to the Milk of Magnesia when necessary. Some foods can trigger reflux . Also as oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains including the possibility of hiatus hernia.
-
I will just add, you haven't mentioned how long you have been taking Omeprazole for but it will take a month to start to take effect. Do another month and when you feel that things have settled down and are getting much better, decide for yourself if you think you can then reduce or even come of the Omeprazole.
If you have to take them for the long term, which I don't think you will, think about taking supplements to ward off any possible side effects.
As mentioned, there are loads of posts on here regarding the demon that is reflux!
-
I was starting to get acid reflux more frequently and switched to using the vaginal route for Utrogestan and so far (admittedly only a few weeks) I haven't had the problem.
-
What are everyone's symptoms of acid reflux/gerd?
I've had episodes of gastritis and acid reflux for decades, even an ulcer. I also have hiatus hernia. My symptoms have been worsening in the last few years. I had another endoscopy this year and was diagnosed with Barratts Oesophagus. I've since changed my diet. No acidy foods, no alcohol, small and often, no food less than 3 hours before bed. I saw a private gastric specialist and he's checking again next week, another endoscopy and biopsies as he's not certain. If you've got inflammation of the stomach lining it can take 8 weeks to heal but I'd get checked again if it doesn't improve. What dose of omeprazole are you on?
-
Thank you all
I'm on omeprazole but not been taking it for a month yet so will keep taking. Does acid reflux cause stomach spasms I can't work out if it's my anxiety or my reflux
Wish I'd never started hrt did nothing for me at all. I do also have a hiatus hernia so probably why its worse
Thanks for replying :)
-
As oestrogen levels drop a hiatus hernia is 'common' due to laxity of muscles.
My reflux becomes worse by night, as the gut begins to work. I had to sleep sitting up last night. Off to the GP during the week to discuss ::). I was taking Omeprazolol in the morning to line the digestive tract.
The rebound associated cough is annoying too >:(
-
Yes I get the cough too
The burning in the chest is horrible too. Also my stomach spasms which feels like anxiety So frustrated what this beast has done to me! :'(
-
It will pass. Do have a talk with your GP as Omeprazolol shouldn't be prescribed long term :-\. No1 told me that!
-
Thank you :)
Xx
-
Thank you I was going to give it a month and then go back if no better
Really wish I'd thought going on hrt through better! I was very niave and thought it was a winder drug which for some it is foe me it's been a beast x

.... and breath. I've been reading various reports this evening on Omeprazolol ....... quite interesting. 4-6 weeks of initial treatment is recommended ::). I need to ask our GP how long I've been swallowing it for.
Apparently bananas can ease reflux .......... as they are absorbent. It doesn't suggest when to eat them ::). I know that they cured my restless legs syndrome.

I feel as though I know omeprazole inside out having had stomach problems for decades. Gastric specialists told me taking an odd one is no good if you've a chronic problem so you're right. They always tell me to do 8 weeks double dose when i get a flare up, it can take longer if there's gastritis or ulcer. I'm normally on one daily. I'm off for another gastroscopy on Wednesday. I should be on their Christmas party list.

Jules is this with the specialist who thinks you may not actually have Barretts after all? I hope it goes well and that the first doc did get it wrong!

Yes. I'm sure the outcome will be the same. Biopsies were taken. He's basing it on the fact that the area of change isn't as large as they'd normally expect but change is change!

Ah yes okay I see what you mean. Although if it is less, then it means less area with potential too doesn't it.

I suppose so. It's changed how I approach food and drink and I'm conscious of every sensation.

Yes I can imagine it would. Hopefully you can get some reassurance this week. Sounds a silly question but can't they just treat the affected cells in some way? Zap them with something. Would they do that if it was private?

No. I just have to control the acid by omeprazole and diet. Obviously the worry around it, causes more acid!
-
This is purely anecdotal, I don't know if it will help others but for me taking a magnesium supplement seems to have completely sorted out any indigestion problems. Maybe worth a try/ exploring ?
-
Tnx. Years ago I tried high dose magnesium for a persistent cough after a cold that wouldn't shift. It cleared the cough after about 8-10 days, however, I needed to be near the loo ::)
I will take milk of magnesia B4 my bath an hour B4 bed which might mean that I can lay down to sleep!
-
My condition has been caused by chronic acid reflux. The acid has changed the cells at the bottom of my oesophagus. I knew it could cause scarring then tightening of the oesophagus. I didn't know it could cause cell change. Could have been like that for years. Id not ha an endoscopy for 13 years. Just taking omeprazole intermittently and gaviscon. Some nights i was up walking round the room feeling like i was having heart attack. Acid needs to be controlled
-
This is why I get a bit annoyed when friends and random people in the pub tell me that using a ppi longterm is bad for my health. I had severe ulceration of the oesophagus before I saw my GP and was told, after an endoscopy, that if it was left there was a high chance it would lead to cell changes and then cancer. I have a hiatus hernia so the acid goes where it shouldn't. Not much I can do to completely stop that happening. I hope you are ok Jules.

I also have a hernia. And I was told the same about the cancer but they just handed me a leaflet. I worry about what i can eat, and everytime I get a bit of indigestion that it's causing more damage, no way of knowing other than swallowing a camera. Hopefully I'll be clearer after this one

I up my omeprazole for a while (under gastric teams watchful eye) when I can't drink hot drinks without my throat feeling on fire which is my particular warning sign. Some omeprazole brands are better than others I've found. Good luck with the next endoscopy. Fingers crossed for you.

Good you'll find out what's what on same day, and hopefully in a kinder more helpful way than when a leaflet was handed to you. Is this appointment NHS or private?

NHS unfortunately but the professor I saw privately is doing it this time

Oh glad you have someone you know and are comfortable with. Assume he knows how you were treated last time. It may be worth saying something when you arrive about how you anxious you are, and what you would like to be different. I mean for me, its even small things like when I went for my first colonoscopy I was sedated and so utterly terrified beforehand that I asked for no mask on my face until I was asleep, and someone to tell me as soon as I was in recovery that it wasn't cancer. You have nothing to lose by asking for what will make you more comfortable.

Yes I will tell them. He knows how anxious I am. I didn't have cancer when they checked in April. I've recently had bloods and a FIT test too which were normal. It's just the whole thing, it's been going on all year and in the end, I'll get the same diagnosis I'm sure so it's just prolonged it all. Depending on the outcome, I'm going to make an appointment with a dietician for advice.

That's a good idea. It may help you if you feel you have some control over the situation in terms if positive steps you can take.

I had my endoscopy, quite stressful really. Diagnosis is the same as last time so I will be under surveillance and on omeprazole. I was being sent away with a report like last time so asked to speak to the professor and felt calmer after that. I'm going to try to get control of my diet with some help. He did say that nit being overweight, not smoking or drinking and eating healthy goes in my favour

:thankyou:

Good that you asked to speak to him and it helped. Do you take any supplements to line the esophagus? I've heard there are something things that can help like glutamine. Glad it's over for you anyway, how often is the surveillance?

I take glucosamine but I'll look into some extra bone protection. I think the biopsies will determine the frequency of checks but he said 2 or 3 yearly. I'd rather have yearly, 3 doesn't seem often enough but he said that's the recommendation

Hello Jules
It is good that you were able to speak to the Professor about your situation.
I eat a whole food plant based diet and don't suffer from acid reflux but I have no idea if the two are actually connected.
I understand however that meat and dairy put more pressure on the digestive system so a plant dominant diet may be worth trying.
Perhaps this something that a nutritionist can advise you on.
Take care..
K.

I'll see what the advice is. I eat very little meat.
