Morning ladies
Anyone had a really long but light period go on for weeks (3 weeks for me) and then end in a pinky/light brown discharge (1 week and counting)
Had a gap of 40 days this last time
I’m thinking I didn’t ovulate this last time so hence the really long, light, period and now the spotting at the end of it that’s just keeping on going
Will it ever end ??
Only just started to have longer gaps between
All change again, get used to one thing and then things change again :-\
-
It's The Change - does what it says on the tin. As oestrogen levels begin to drop there may not be enough hormone to empty the womb completely, this would happen to me every month. A heavy, clotty, very painful period of 8-10 days: 3 days without then a show of brown blood. Plus itching high up. Then 10 days without ....... when I got into peri I would miss months of bleeds, then have a few which were 'normal' but lighter.
How do U feel otherwise?

Thanks CLKD, I feel fine in myself otherwise
First time I’ve had a really long one and it’s worried me a bit as the ‘brown’ is still going a week later :-\
I suppose this is what happens ??
-
This was normal for me and is due to changing hormone levels. The gap between periods can also become really unpredictable. For three years mine varied from regular to months apart. Nine months was the longest between them.

Thanks again Taz for you advice. It really does help.
At what point did you decide to go onto HRT?
Apart from periods all over the place, the only other symptoms I have at the moment are trouble sleeping and anxiety (especially in the morning time)
Xx
-
Anxiety in the mornings can be caused by the cortisol [waking] hormone. My GP gave me propranolol to take at night as I would wake terrified in the early hours :'( :-\ .
Sleeping can be caused by many reasons, especially if the brain is whizzing - mine never stops ::)

Yes it’s the early hours and on through the morning that is the worst time for me.
I do have a lot of stress going on at the moment so my brain is non stop too.
Moving house soon and elderly parents and their health issues xx
-
Is there any1 that you can delegate issues to? The more we learn to say 'no' or 'find someone else' the easier it does become. Take it from one who had to step back .......
What support do the elderly parents have access to? Do U live close by which makes it harder to back off, whereas our parents were 2 hours drive from us so they had to use local facilities: GP, physio., local Church for lifts etc.. Despite the moans from my mother about how 'no one visits', I found out that actually, she and Dad had regular visitors. I was able to put a stop to that moan! ::)
All elderly [though what elderly actually means :o ] are entitled to a free Social Services assessment to see if they require extra aids.

I do have 2 brothers but they live 4 hours away and I’m 40 mins away so it all falls to me if they need anything
they are both physically quite capable of getting about the house, but both have suffered stokes which has affected their memory and ability to think clearly so it’s a worry that way. Like leaving the gas cooker on, things like that
They’ve not had an assessment with social services as yet xx
-
Get SS involved. Sooner rather than later gives everyone breathing space to consider what might be suggested. Sounds like they require a safety assessment if they are leaving things switched on. Mum found Oak Farm Foods or Wiltshire ready made meals useful, straight into the microwave from the freezer. Ordered by phone.
What advice has the Stroke Association given, do they get assessments from the stroke dept at the Hospital? If your parents are involved with a Church, maybe someone would pop in for 'a chat' when they could check what was left on etc.? As *we* age the more stressful issues might become, especially if the wrinkles are resistant to change even if they are aware that they need extra assistance.
MinL was left to deal with her parents, she would get them ready for when her 7 siblings visited so they never became aware of her struggles.

Thanks CLKD, it’s all too easy to just get on with it and not realise the stress it creates.
You are right, I should get in touch with social services, thank you
They are both awaiting memory tests and mum has an MRI appointment being sent out soon I hope. Her last stroke was only 3 weeks ago
That’s about all from the hospital
GP is quite involved and has them both in for review appointments regularly.
They both have lots of friends that visit so that’s good

It was my hot sweats (every 20 minutes day and night) rather than the bleeding that drove me to try HRT. I'd had the changes to period pattern for three years by then. I was 53. The sweats had gone within 48 hours.

That's good Curlygirl. The more care that you delegate the better you will feel in the long run: if U take on too much for your parents, the less help you are likely to get!

Ah right ok. I’m 54 in July. Don’t suffer with the sweats yet. They hit is yet to come I’m sure x

I had a few cold sweats after my evening bath for a few weeks. Skin itched for a few months. Don't anticipate something that might never happen ;-). Treat each day as 'now' ;)
We have a thread on the Forum about caring for elderly relatives: I'll bump it.
-
I’ve noticed that the spotting I’m having increases with exercise, even light exercise.
Is this due to the increase in blood flow to the uterus during any exercise
Just something I’ve noticed over the past week of spotting
Can be light brown and then after any exercise the colour changes to a darker colour

Aww thank you CLKD. You’ve been so helpful I really do appreciate it ❤️
-
CLKD you are right about thinking in the ‘now’. Thanks for that too ❤️
-
I would think it's exercise related, certainly when I had heavy periods, when I moved the clots would drop >:( :'(
-
Some women never get a hot flush/sweat. You may be one of those :)
-
However, many GPs still believe that a loss of periods and hot flushes are the main symptoms of peri ::)

Yeah that’s what I thought. Until last year I had very have periods then they changed to much more manageable x

They really do. Definitely not the case though as we all know xx
-
Well today the bright red light bleeding is back🙄
So started with 4 days of spotting, then 16 days light bleeding then a week of spotting again. Now back to bright red bleeding again :-\
What is going on ?? Is this the same bleed or is the spotting in between a ‘break’.
I have absolutely no idea what is going on anymore 🫤
-
I am really sorry this is still going on for you curlygirl. I understand how confusing and distressing it is. I think peri can be like this. You have spoken to your GP and they are not concerned so I hope that helps to reassure you.

Aww thanks Flossie
I am utterly confused at the moment
When I saw my GP it had been going on for 2.5 weeks. Tomorrow it will be a month of something continually
My next appointment is 28th April. I hope it’s not still going by then🫤
Hope all is ok with you ❤️

I find peri so changeable. One minute everything is stable and then something like this happens. I have noticed many threads with women bleeding like this on here. I understand it is concerning especially as you have health anxiety.
Hopefully it will stop soon. I know you will be hoping it is each day. I am okay thank you. :)

This is the first time this has happened to me and took me completely by surprise.
Only just started missing periods and this happens
It’s no fun at all🫤
Oh yes, the health anxiety has me ‘dying’ of all sort of things in my head
I do wake up each day hoping that it will have stopped, but hasn’t as yet. Been a few times I thought it might be, but no ……..
Glad all is okay with you
Much love and thanks again for the support ❤️

Still bright red but light bleeding this morning
Think I will have to see how it goes.
I’ve a feeling it’s all one continuous bleed, so might have to consider taking the Provera to try and stop it
A friend said to give it a week in case it might be a proper period and then take it if still ongoing
What do you ladies all think ? ❤️
-
Very little on a pad, but in the toilet and there when I wipe afterwards (sorry for TMI)
Feel like I’ve gone backwards a month now 🙄🫤
-
Never TMI!
HORMONES >:( ::) . It will settle. Eventually. The Change ::)

I think your friend makes a good suggestion. There is no pressure to use Provera. I think you just need to weigh up which you would prefer out of the bleeding or using Provera. :)

Well, the saga continues……
In the middle of the night this bleed got a bit heavier, more like a proper period and still is now.
I’m so confused :-\
Is this a proper period now??
I’ll be glad when this one stops
Thanks for all your help, support and advice ladies
Much love ❤️

I had that once. Bled for four weeks then it felt like another period started and I bled for two more weeks and then a lighter bleed for another three weeks. It's peri menopause and your hormone levels rising and falling switch the bleeding instruction on and off at strange times. That's how I think of it anyway!
If you took the Provera and still bled after at least you would be able to tell your GP that you'd done as suggested but were still having problems? You've consulted the GP and been given advice. If you have to return to the GP but haven't done anything to try to correct the problem then you might have to then take the Provera after all and wait even longer to see if you do need to be referred. What is it that you are worried about?

Exactly like I’m having now. I had 3 weeks of light bleeding , a week of spotting and then a heavier bleed now for the last few days and still going.
I try to tell myself it’s just hormones but it’s difficult when I suffer with health anxiety and have done since the start of all of this
GP didn’t actually suggest the Provera. I asked her if there was anything I could take and she said to take the Provera if I wanted to and gave me enough for 2 occasions
I suppose because of health anxiety I’m worried it’s something more serious than hormones but that’s just how my mind works right now x
-
Health anxiety is so cruel but tell it to be quiet. 😉The bleeding is a normal part of peri and your GP knows all about it. Hopefully the bleeding will stop soon and give you a break.
-
If it were serious by now you would have other symptoms ;)

Thanks Flossie, I do try and keep it under wraps as much as I can
I guess because it’s never happened to me before it’s got me worried it’s more than just hormones and I feel like it won’t ever stop
A week can feel so long when you’re bleeding :-\

Just wanted to update in case this may help anyone in the future
The bleeding stopped on Sunday after exactly 5 weeks.
The last week followed the pattern of a normal period (my new normal which is lighter than they used to be).
I guess if it happens again, I won’t be so anxious about it all now
Thanks to those of you who helped me through
Much love ❤️

This is wonderful news Curly! I am very happy for you. I hope you are feeling okay after all this. It was a very anxious time for you.
-
Hiya,
Just to say I’ve been having the same problem (though not as bad as you) ….two ten day periods, then one of five days, now on day 13 of one and still going!
I don’t mind so much per se, I use mooncup or period knickers so not costing me anything….and my flow is so much lighter than it has ever been plus no periods pains any more it seems (fingers crossed)
I went to GP about six weeks ago to ask advice. She examined me and said I had enlarged uterus, so I’m having an ultrasound Thurs to check that out. I do think I have at least one fibroid (felt by midwife after giving birth) though it’s never been investigated further.
GP said it was difficult to say if problem was mechanical or hormonal so scan would help.
Do you have fibroids or polyps that you know of at all?
-
Also I too am just at the stage where I am getting longer gaps (unless the gap is 16 days that is🤬). Hoping that they space out now more for me. I am 47 next week. Missed one entirely last autumn. Last gap was 35 days. Can also be 28 days ……frustrating!!
-
I went several months B4 they would pop up for a few 'normal' months, at least they weren't painful and less bloody.
-

Although it’s not nice to have these longer periods, it’s nice to learn that we’re not alone
My GP don’t examine me, she just referred me for a scan. Not received my appointment yet
Let me know how you get on ❤️
I’ve never been checked for fibroids or polyps so I wouldn’t know at the moment
My GP said she was still pretty sure it’s hormonal

I think the longer periods can come after longer gaps sometimes
I missed December (first one ever) so a gap of 55 days. January then was my usual 5-6 days long. Then nothing for 38 days which was followed by this long 5 week one
All last year it was like pick a number for the gaps in between. Anything from 14 days to 27. Now seem to be going longer, for now anyway
It is very frustrating :-\
Mine also are much lighter than they’ve ever been
I’ve been so worried and thought it would go on forever :-\
I’m 54 in July so hoping I’ve not much longer to go?
Hopefully won’t be so stressed about it next time, if there is a next time xx
-
I went several months B4 they would pop up for a few 'normal' months, at least they weren't painful and less bloody.
Mine are sometimes painful and sometimes not. I used to get the pains before the bleeding would start properly, but now if I get pains it’s once it’s started. They are much lighter though.
I used to have extremely heavy ones and couldn’t leave the house with huge clots
They’ve been so different for probably 18 months now
-
VanillaLover, what period knickers do you use?
I have thought about trying them but haven’t actually bought any as yet
Are you on HRT?
I’m not at the moment. Didn’t suit and tried most of the different ones xx
-
I use a mooncup normally which I love but I find after ten days of it it seems to irritate my bladder/pelvic floor so I’ve just been using the knickers. It’s only been spotting really tbh. I have always had dreadful heavy painful periods (to the extent I would faint) so to have lighter pain free ones is amazing. If only they didn’t go on so long….
I have tried several makes, Modibodi, WUKA and M and S. M and S are the cheapest. Best I have tried so far are the WUKA.
-
Sorry forgot to add - been on HRT 18 months or so. It’s helped my sleep, palpitations, hot flushes to some extent. Didn’t iron out some crazy fluctuations, but did help.
Went onto continuous on advice of GP as I was still getting my own periods (and no withdrawal bleed) on the sequential anyway. I quite like the continuous!
I do feel like I have entered a new phase of peri now. Used to get swollen sore boobs at odd times, now they have shrunk back to pre-HRT size. Symptoms much reduced this year (touch wood). Everything gone very dry. Periods very light now. I am on Evorel 50 patches and 100mg utro daily now.
I will let you know how scan goes. No idea when I will get results back, with it being Easter the day after the scan!
-
I couldn’t get on with any of the HRT.
Glad it’s working for you.
Yeah let me know how the scan goes 🤞
I might give the period knickers a go at some point as mine are only light these days, well at the moment xx
-
Well, I thought I might have a long gap again this time but no :-\
Went 10 days with nothing and now the brown discharge is back. Like I normally get before a period. See what happens this time then
Still not had my appointment for the scan I was referred for. I’m assuming that because the GP thought it to be hormonal, she didn’t do an urgent referral
This was the kind of gap I was getting last year 10-14 days of nothing and then another one starting up
Pretty certain it’s all hormones xx
-
Hi, just to update in case it’s relevant to you Curlygirl - had my pelvic and TV ultrasound just before Easter and while I haven’t seen the report yet, technician said she saw no reason for the prolonged bleeding and odd spotting. Also uterus normal size etc. I guess it must just be hormonal.
My last period was 15 days long …ended just as I had the scan.
Don’t know what the GP will want to do, I’m happy to leave it as is for now. She mentioned doubling utrogestan (I take 100 mg continuously) which I could do I suppose. Can’t see it will make a lot of difference. I’ll discuss when I speak to them.

Thanks for that Vanilla. Good to know that these things can happen and have no underlying cause.
I’m sure mine is hormonal but I get in a panic about it every now and then.
I have another GP appointment on 28th, probably still won’t have had a scan by then (maybe it work’s differently in Wales to England??).
I’m so glad yours was ok ❤️

Aw, sorry to hear this Curly. How annoying and frustrating for you. I hope you are not too anxious and that it stops soon.

Like I said it’s more like I’ve been used to for the last few years.
Periods every 3 weeks or less sometimes so only have a handful of days clear as I always have brown spotting at the beginning and the end.
I guess because I missed February I was expecting that maybe again, but no.
Have to see if it comes to a proper one or not.
Changing all the time so not sure what to expect and when these days
Hope you’re okay Flossie ❤️xxxxx
-
I’m actually thinking of giving HRT another go to see if it will regulate the bleeding to something more predictable.
What do you ladies think?
Should I wait for the ultrasound first before trying HRT again?
I have no idea how long the ultrasound appointment will take to arrive.
I assumed it would be a quick appointment, but it’s been 2.5 weeks and I’ve had nothing as yet
Xx
Xx

I think trying HRT is a great idea. Maybe you could call up to chase the scan and find out where you are in the waiting list? I would wait until you have the scan to try HRT. :)
