Who has Plans already?
I know where I would like to go :-\. MayB this Spring I'll get myself together and off we will go :bouncing:
-
We're sorted for this year, CLKD..
Hubby and I cruising for a week around the Canaries at beginning of March, taking my wee mum to a caravan in Oban for a week in June and we're off to Vancouver for 2 week Alaska cruise in July..
Cannot wait....
-
Sounds amazing Songbird.
We’re off to Florida beginning of March. Can’t wait.
Been before about 15 or so years ago, but a lots changed since then, so should be good. 🤞🏼
Then hopefully, off for next Xmas somewhere.
-
I'm off to Lazarote in March and also booked for November. Making the most of being able to go during term time now and not having to pay through the nose during school holidays. Might be going with the family and grandkids to Rhodes in August, that'll be hot!
-
We went to Florida last year. All the prices have gone up, take plenty of money Jillydoll 💰💰💰
-
We have no plans to travel, can't afford it really. I will renew my passport at some point this year...you never know, dh might win the lottery and then we're off to somewhere.
-
I love visiting towns and villages close by, especially Grave Yards where local history is laid out for all to C.

I have just booked my 1st return to Italy since Covid. 4 days in Turin which is new to me and then a return to Bologna for 1 week to meet up with my older Swedish friend. I am also looking into a shorter trip in March for my big birthday. Possibly Iceland.
-
Enjoy - my Dream (other than a bungalow with swimming pool off the bedroom ;)) is to visit Lugano, Lake Maggiorie as well as Milan.
-
Katejo - Iceland is amazing, I'd thoroughly recommend it.
Shhh... don't tell OH, I am learning Spanish as I'm planning to go to S America again, maybe Columbia and Ecuador but not decided yet.
-
Oh good luck with that sheila99 - I tried French about 10 years ago ;D
-
Hmm, it's a struggle. I have no natural talent for languages, French was the only exam I consistently failed at school and my brain is far less efficient now than it was then.
-
Same here - I did French in ballet lessons. Our school didn't teach languages, my parents spoke French and German but it wasn't taught in the home >:(
I think in general the English, having gone through many language changes due to invations over the Centuries, have decided 'that's it' - we know enough ;-).
-
Yes, we have a terrible to languages - we don't need to learn them as everyone speaks English anyway. Perhaps true in much of the world but unfortunately not in S America.

Thanks for that. This is just a 5 day taster trip. There is a longer one but it costs a lot more and I have my April trip soon after.
-
Yeah, we’ve been told everything’s expensive now over there LittleMinnie.
Was really cheap there last time we went.
Oh well, will have to buy cleverly this time. 😉
-
Are you doing the parks Jillydoll?
-
Hmm, it's a struggle. I have no natural talent for languages, French was the only exam I consistently failed at school and my brain is far less efficient now than it was then.
I've found that the Michel Thomas CDs are helpful.
-
That's interesting - we used those for a while. Finding time to listen was my problem ::)
-
Ohhh yes LM.
Must admit, I’m dreading the heat and all that walking. ;D
I’m told, there’s an I train or something 🤷🏼♀️ that takes you up and down International Drive.
There’s a seat with my name on it already. ;D
But we’ll see, no need to rush around, and trying to keep up with my OH is almost impossible. :-\
Did you enjoy it LittleMinnie? .
-
You’ll have a great time, Jilly, I’m sure.
We cruised from Miami so only had a little taster of Florida. Couldn’t believe how hot it was in February 🥵.
The only other experience we’ve had of the US was a week in Las Vegas! OMG, never again - it’s just not for me!
-
Any1 watch Jane MacDonald last night :o in Vegas ?
-
Ohhh no CLKD, I’ll have to watch that on catch up or something, we’ve been looking at Las Vegas.
What was wrong with it Songbird? ….too hectic, too hot, or just too flash?
-

Loved it. Have been a few times before so this time just did Universal. Harry Potter rides are amazing.
We didn’t do the parks last year but stayed next to the beach. But Did the parks about 3 years ago. Only did Universal but loved it. The Harry Potter rides are amazing.
-
Oh Jilly. What I should say is that everyone I have spoken to that has been to LV has loved it. It's just me I think! My sis in law was desperate to go. Gambling, lots of "tackiness", x rated ads everywhere! Nopes, not for me. However..
Fantastic shows at night and gr8 cheesecake ;D
And I considered myself fortunate to survive a Grand Canyon helicopter trip :o
I'll stick to cruising ;)

L V doesn't tempt me at all!

I loved Las Vegas. Not a place I would keep going back to but enjoyed it when we were there.
-
I’ve told OH it’s New York for my 60th. So not this Xmas coming, the next one.
He can’t say I didn’t give him enough time to gather up money then can he!
-
How soon does he need to book the tickets ?
-
Oh I'd love New York at Xmas Jilly. I might drop a hint to my hubby - my 60th is Nov next year and it's our silver wedding next year too. A wee double celebration 🍾
-
OHHHH  :party09:
-
Aww yes, it’ll be great if you could go.
C you there! ;D
-
;D ;D ooh lovely...
I'll be the one with the "Menopause Matters" badge on...

-

-
I'm off to Lanzarote Sunday providing the flights not cancelled because of snow forecast here. 🤞
-
Is that 'here' as in 'here' .......... or did I dream the weather girl stating it 'might snow' ;D. Enjoy!
-
Yes snow here next week, although they've been threatening the Beast from the East for weeks and nothing yet.
Couldn't have timed it better for 2 weeks in the sun.
-
Hope you have a lovely time, Dierdre. Hopefully the Canaries will be sunny 😎….
I’m just hoping my flight will go from Glasgow :o 🤞
-
We’re flying from Manchester. 🙀
Got to get there ‘in the snow’ if we have any from B’ham.
It’s already an early leave for us, might not get any sleep at all if we have to leave any earlier. 😩🤷🏼♀️
Happy holidays Songbird & Deidre. 🏖️🏝️✈️
-
Oh fingers crossed 🤞 Jill. You have a lovely time too 🍹😎
-
Thanx SB.
I’ve got my Miriam Margolyes book ready for the flight, so that should be interesting.
Only read the first couple of chapters last time.
Then hopefully I’ll 😴😴😴
-
Hope you both have a wonderful time too, jillydoll and Songbird. Forecast for the Canaries for the next couple of weeks is sunny 😎
-
Hooray 8)

Can’t wait to get some sun ☀️
-
Where you off to LittleMinnie?
-
Was hoping to go to Spain or Portugal but the weather isn’t great there at the moment so it will probably be the Canaries

-
Our neighbours just back from Gran Canaria and said it was perfect temperature ways, hope you all have a lovely time, not jealous or anything ::)

Nice and sunny here in Lanzarote and getting hotter. All my aches have gone already now I'm away from the damp weather in UK. Making the most of it.
-
Gr8 news Dierdre. Long may the good weather continue 🤞. A little bit of sunshine is good for aching bones...
-
Yeahhhhh Deirdre, good news. Get that viti D going. 👍 :sunny:
-
Bring some home in a bottle, U could make a fortune at this time of year ;D
-
Katejo - Iceland is amazing, I'd thoroughly recommend it.
Shhh... don't tell OH, I am learning Spanish as I'm planning to go to S America again, maybe Columbia and Ecuador but not decided yet.
I did book Iceland for my 60th birthday trip and I am flying early on Thursday 9th. Just 4 nights. Hope to see Northern Lights.
-
Northern Lights took a holiday and could be seen across parts of the UK last week ;-) Enjoy!
-
Been to Norway many times and never seen the northern lights, only time I've seen them was in Aberdeen of all places, back in my 20s they were beautiful :)
-
Northern Lights took a holiday and could be seen across parts of the UK last week ;-) Enjoy!
Yes I saw photos taken here but not the actual thing.
-
See you all later. 👋🏼
-
Me too 👋
-
:na: ENJOY!
-
How’s Florida Jillydoll?
-
She's home this weekend LM x
-
Oh she’ll be 😴😴😴 for a few days then.
-
Well. We paid the balance of our Alaskan cruise today. Blimey, I thought I'd need supplementary oxygen for hubby! It's not cheap and the travel insurance :o Blinkin fortune! As I said.......
"There are no pockets in shrouds". That really helped - not! ;D ;D
-
Go 4 it. Explain to DH that there are people, like me, who cannot go on holiday: even the thought of visiting friends in Devon brings on anxiety :'(. Tax man will take it otherwise!
-
Couldn't agree more CLKD. OH is someone who worked hard all of his life. He likes to maintain a healthy bank balance (to the point where there's a danger, I can see, that either a care home or the tax man will get it as we have no children!) It is difficult to strike a balance between enjoying life and keeping pennies for emergencies.
He has been exceptional at earning/providing for our retirement (mind you, I've done OK in that respect too) but I reckon I'm better at getting the balance right re what to spend, on what and when..🤔
-
My dream is to visit Lugano and the Italian Lakes :-\. That bus might be along B4 you spend it all ;-) .
-
Go for it songbird, none of us know what's round the corner, enjoy every minute.
Ha yes LM she arrives back in the U.K. this afternoon so it's an early start for her.
-
UK holiday village chain Center Parcs has been put up for sale by its owner, the Canadian private equity firm Brookfield.
The company is looking to raise between £4bn and £5bn from the sale according to the Financial Times.
Brookfield bought the business for about £2.4bn in 2015.
Center Parcs runs six holiday villages in the UK and Ireland which attract more than two million visitors every year.
The first UK location opened in 1987, at Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. It now has holiday villages at Elveden Forest, Longleat Forest, Whinfell Forest and Woburn Forest.
-
Never been to a centre parcs, don't know if they're good or not.
-
I've never been to a Center Parcs site either Jaypo 🤔...
I'm taking mum to Haggerston Castle in Berwick on Tweed at the beginning of June. She does love a caravan ;D
-
Aaaaaaarrrgghhh songbird I've been to Haggerston castle twice,my daughter loved it there, although one night, mummy got a bit sloshed and couldn't fine her caravan 🤣😂🤣
-
Center Parks are expensive!
-

Just off to the beach, then to the bar.
Lovely jubilee!! ;D
:sunny:
-
Jubbly even .......... ;D
Get plenty of sunscreen on your body! Wind can cause burning too. An excuse to drink plenty.
-
Noooo,it's because she's drunk ;D
-
She’s on holiday, it’s allowed 8)
-
It’s allowed 👌 - indeed it’s imperative :drunklaf:
-
Well,you know me,don't drink 😇🤐🤥🤣
-
Me neither. Love a nice glass of water
-
With some lovely ice and lemon - yeah, right :o
-
Oh yes LM & songbird, making me thirsty just thinking about that, omg I'm laughing even typing this ;D
-
 🍹👍 🚰 👎
-
Parts of Italy are flooded so avoid for this year :-\ :'(
-
Ooh I love Italy. Homemade ravioli and a nice amarone at the harbour in Portofino - heaven.
Anyone been watching Clive Myrie in Italy? It's quite a good series but if he mentions his "wife, Catherine" one more time, I'm witing in :o ;D
-
;D. hopefully he and Catherine are happy together .......
Apparently the region affected had 6 months rain in 12 hours :'(
-
Did someone mention Amarone!?! 🥴 🍷 ;D
-
Anyone been watching Clive Myrie in Italy? It's quite a good series but if he mentions his "wife, Catherine" one more time, I'm witing in :o ;D
Brace yourself Songbird ! I'm up to the 5th one on iplayer and you find out Catherines shoe size but Clive for all his talk can't remember it. Typical.
-
We're on catch-up ..... I"m watching for the scenery ;)
-
Oh no Minnie 😬. I can’t stand it! He mentioned the ‘C’ word 4 times last night ;D…….
Another symptom of the menopause - getting annoyed about nowt. No, hold on, I’ve always been like that
-
Just finished the dreaded packing! Home tomorrow.
Had a hot day on the beach today. The sea is freezing! 🥶 hence just a paddle. ;D
Iron Man competition here tomorrow, :cheer: all them men in lycra. I mean, who wants to see all that! :whist:
-
Oh I hate packing Jill. I leave that to hubby. Hope you had a lovely holiday 8)..
Men in lycra allowed as long as there is no beer belly on show ;D...
It's budgie smugglers that make me want to :sick02:......Nice boxers please ;D :o
-
Me! Me! Me ......... I love packing :-\ especially taking everything out on our return: I know whether I've panicked/not >:( or enjoyed myself 8)
I don't like boxers, prefer Y-fronts.
-
Awww Jill & songbird, don't get clkd started on men's knickyknackynoos ;D
Text me when your home Jill!!
-
Home.
Knackered.
Hungry. ;D
Omg, one bloke, a right beef cake he was, :o came walking towards us in just his black shiney SMALL budgie smugglers. ;D
Me and OH just looked at least other and laughed. OH said, WTF does he look like.
Then another bloke was laying on the beach with these multi coloured budgie smugglers on. I mean, he just stood out on the beach with all his colours. :o
I said to OH, wonder what you'd look like in those? ;D. Dont think so, he said! ;D
-
I prefer nudist beaches ;)
Laundry done?
-
Oh nooooooo, all that dangling going on 🤢🤣
-
;D not in cold weather ;D
-
I’ve never understood people that want to be completely naked in public :o What is the problem with covering your “bits” with a little bit of material? “Dangling”, “wrinkly”, “hairy” are not words that fill me with glee
-
I spent a few hours on Biarritz beach many years ago, totally naked. I was with 7 lads :o who were swimming, they left their belongings on the towels beside me. Watching the other residents I could see them trying to work out the relationship between me and the others ;D 1 was my husband :-*
The feeling of fresh air on the skin is soothing, swimming in water is freeing. As I worked in a hospital at that time I thought that I had seen all shapes and sizes: wrong 8)
-
Shocked and stunned, I am, CLKD ;D ;D
-
May the Force B with U ;)
-
:clapping: ;D
-
Me too Songbird. :o
All that sand getting into places where you not want it. :D
Talk about sand blasting! :o
-
Ooh I know. Sand is the last thing I want getting into my bits - not now the faaabbuulous vagirux has sorted out my horrible VA :o………
The very thought of gritty sand getting to where it shouldn’t be makes me clench my bits ;D
-
Oh gawd, couldn't think of anything worse, men's wrinkly bits all hanging about 🤢
-
It doesn't get into personal places if one is nude ;)
-
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The sun has been strong but beware this can cause fire. Make sure you keep reflective objects out of direct sunlight."
A car was badly damaged because sun glasses had been left on the dashboard!
-
Don't all rush at once ;D
Isle of Wight: New dinosaur species discovered. how large poo bags would 1 require ............... :whist:
-
Just had Oct/Nov holiday to Lanzarote disrupted for the second time. Provisionally book apartment a few months ago and bought flights, they were cancelled as no longer flying on that day so got refund, cancelled apartment. Now booked again and the return Wednesday flight has now been taken off. All the other days are extortionate prices as it's Oct half term, some days £400 each way.
Then they wonder why parents take their children out of school for holidays!!
The Wednesday return flight was only £113 and the flight was half full, so refunds, what's the betting this flight comes back on at a later date at double the price?
-
A letter to Watch Dog on the One Show ......... ?
-
I don't think Ryanair would bother one bit about that ;D
They get complaints all the time although up until now we've always been lucky and used them for years. The trouble is they are usually the cheapest so will always get the custom.
-
I was talking to someone yesterday who flies Ryan Air regularly, however: prices have shot up and now BA is £50.00 more expensive with more head/leg room etc.. So he's voting with his feet ;-).
-
Blimey Deirdre :o
Speak about daylight robbery >:(
-
Flights have really shot up in price with all airlines. We fly a few times a year and have really noticed a difference in the prices. We never book a package and book flights, accommodation and transport separately, everything has shot up.
But, we are paying more for a rental in this country in August than we did to go to Portugal for a week a few weeks ago and the Portugal trip included flights, accommodation and car hire.
-
Cost of fuel in the main
-
It's still cheaper to go abroad for accomodation and spending money even with the flights. We went on the east coast for May bank holiday weekend and spent more than going to Lanzarote for a long weekend.
£1500 a week for a caravan in Cornwall this summer!
We're paying €1200 (£1038) for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom villa with own pool, on the beach. We'll BBQ and have picnics on the beach and round the pool, much cheaper than UK, especially when sharing the cost. Going outs cheaper too, €3 for a glass of wine compared to £6 here.
Definately get more for your money and the good weather, although it's been good here lately but it don't last.
-
What's the difference between Euros and Pounds :-\ - not that I drink alcohol ;-). I can be at my destination in England in the time it takes those that fly to get onto the plane especially when they have to be at the airport so so early ;D
Also I can get home ASAP if necessary :-\
-
It's €1.17 to the pound at the moment.
It actually would take us longer to go to Cornwall than Lanzarote (4 hour flight) even with the 2 hours at the airport. My son went to Cornwall a couple of weeks ago for half term and it took him 10 hours, that incuded stopping for half hour to recharge the car. They were crawling along the motorway at 20mph a lot of the journey. They had a lovely time but journey home took just as long.
I couldn't drive that journey anymore, I usually have a long nap when flying ;D
-
How was the journey in an electric vehicle?
Cornwall is out for us too ........ far too long a journey :-\
-
Agreed Dierdre. I would love to stay in Britain for my main holiday but the “touristy” areas need to rein in the prices. There has to be a balance between the venues/accommodation etc making a bit of money and the tourists feeling they aren’t being ripped off - can’t help feeling it’s a bit one-sided here (and it’s not with the tourist) so I’ll continue to holiday abroad….
-
Yep me too, this country does nothing to make me want to stay here for a holiday, when you go abroad and see what other countries do,there's no comparison
-
Do U not think that tourists are taken for a ride abroad :-\. What I object to here are the tourist charges, i.e. a % on B&B/Hotel accommodation for tourists. Having said that, in Guernsey there are two rates for property: 1 for locals or families moving onto the Island who have 1 member raised there and another for incomers. Properties have to be offered to locals first.
-
I think it depends where and when you go both in the UK and overseas, and also want you want out of a holiday, so it's difficult to make a direct comparison in terms of cost. Holidays everywhere seem more expensive to me these days.
We don't have children so never plan to holiday anywhere during school holidays, not just because it's more expensive but because it's so much busier. I know many people don't have that choice.
I' think I'm unusual in that I'm not that fussed about a beache (or pool) holiday, although we discovered Northumberland earlier this year and it's a stunning coastline. There are lots of beautiful places in the UK the problem is the traffic and the popular places get rammed.
We are just back from another French road trip and it never ceases to amaze us how much space there is over there. It has it all ....cities, countryside, mountains, lakes, beaches.....and easy driving. Probably on a par costwise as the UK but without sitting on a motorway car park for part of the holiday. Well not until we get off the ferry in the UK ;D I love the ferry. You can sit in the bar or communal areas or disappear to the peace and quiet of your own cabin. But again the prices of ferries have shot up, like everything else.
We've travelled all over the world and I used to really love flying but now the whole airport experience puts me off. I hate being treated like cattle. Plus a seemingly "cheap flight" becomes less cheap once you factor in paying for luggage, an allocated seat, airport car parking, transfers the other side etc etc. Im not saying I wont fly, I just don't enjoy it like I used to and its always more expensive than it initially appears.
Anyway, wherever you all end up I hope you get a good deal, have safe travels and have a great time doing whatever you enjoy X
-
When the weather is nice, I don't think you cant beat the UK. But I always plan a Xmas trip to sunnier climes to keep me sane and well - SAD is a blight in my life and these mid-winter breaks help so much
-

I think you are taken for a ride here more. If you want somewhere with a pool in the summer, it’s mega money.
-

That's our main holiday, over Xmas and new year,a cruise round the Canaries and Madeira, the weather is just perfect :)
I agree LM,the effort they make abroad for tourists is second to none.
You must all come to Scotland, scenery is gorgeous and the welcome warm, especially on the islands, take midgie spray though ;D
-
Love Scotland though still lots of it to discover. My friend got married on the west coast on Thursday and her wedding photos on the beach in the sunshine are amazing.
-
What we have in the UK is history - that can be seen. Unlike much of France where the Revolution removed a lot of furniture etc. so the Chataaux are a bit bare ::). We went to Chinon to see where The Girl of Orleans met the Dauphane. It was bare except for 1 chair ::). The Loire is lovely: we swam in clear water and the sand was SO hot we had to run into the water ;D.
What we have in the UK on fine days is a smaller version of mainland Europe. Mountains; hills; water falls; rivers; beaches; historic buildings - always look upwards because roof tiles tell a lot ! - as do windows and those blanked over with bricks due to the window taxes. Various languages as well as local dialects. Well dressing in Derbyshire, we always 4get to go :-\. Roman flooring on the Ilse of Wight under a fabULUS barn to protect it all. Hadrian's Wall ....... I could go on ;D
I want to see the Italian Lakes B4 I die, try to get into the Chapel in Milan to see The Last Supper; not appreciated when I was there aged 18. What we lack are acres of sunflowers ;-)
-
Charente-Maritime - large earth quake in the region, 5.5-5.8. I suppose that due to lack of foundations many buildings have been damaged :'(
-
I agree there are a lot of beautiful and historic places in the UK and plenty to do. I live in North Wales which is stunning and quite rightly attracts visitors from all over the country and world, although the A55 from a Friday to Sunday is rammed. Growing up my parents would never attempt to go anywhere during the holidays, especially a bank holiday. Maybe that has stuck with me and my dislike of sitting in traffic.
Nowhere is perfect. One of the differences I like between France and the UK is the size and space. The population of the UK is now the same as France.
As a cyclist it is far more enjoyable to cycle over there. Not only do most of the French drivers respect and even prioritise cyclists, the infrastructure (& space) focuses on providing safe bespoke roads and paths specifically for cyclists through both towns and countryside. It just makes it a far more enjoyable and safe experience than in this country, having been knocked off twice here. Thats one of the the things I love about it.
This year we were impressed by the stained glass that was developed centuries ago in the town of Troyes and also in Bayeux saw the Bayeux tapestry based around events in the 11th century, along with seeing William the conqueror's tomb. We saw more recent history in the Normandy museums relating to WW2. Last year we were amazed by the mushrooms grown the Troglodyte caves along the Loire due the the ambient temperatures in them. So much history in the Abbey Fontevraud which was originally built in the 12th century and experienced lots of change over the centuries. Just so much to see.
There are so many beautiful places in the world which we naturally appreciate more or less depending on our interests.
-
I do wonder whether we have more history than any other Country?
-
I think we have more history than most but other countries have too. Love Rome and all the history that has to offer. The Vatican is amazing even if you aren’t religious. Also loved Pompeii.
Monte Carlo is also fantastic place to visit (expensive though :o).
As well as history I love beautiful beaches.
-
My friend from Australia came and stayed with me a while back and I took her round Loch Ness and on to Fort William, she was literally crying at the beauty of the mountains and views etc,she was beside herself at all the castles lol
I'm not one for lying sunbathing but also not that interested in walking round ruins etc (sorry) but I do love to find out about the countries I visit, culture etc and like visiting non touristy spots and get a feel of how the locals really live
-
Half a day on a beach is OK unless we have done the touristy bits in previous visits. We often return to areas that we like to relax ....... Northumberland is FabULOUS! It depends on the weather too as to how much we do. I'm happy reading or watching 📺 if the weather is bad.
-
big article in yesterdays Times - about lack of staff in Europe after the pandemic means that some Hotels can't fulfil holiday bookings and cafes will need to cut down on how. many people and for how long they can serve. So it ain't all Brexit ;-).
I going abroad I suggest taking plenty of tea-bags, marmite and Marigolds - "I'll wash up if you serve good food" ;-)
-
The owner of a llama is being sought after it was seen wandering in an Aberdeenshire field.
The Scottish SPCA said the llama was spotted near the new Pitsligo area.
The animal charity said it went out to investigate and found the llama but it was difficult to catch.
-
I reckon Larry Llama could give you a painful kick if he took it upon himself - not to mention the dirty habit of spitting :sick02: Approach with caution methinks :o
-
Yep. That's why llama are used for proectecing chickens etc., due to their backwards kick, front legs forwards towards anything that don't like and that vomit/spit :o
Hopefully this 1 will be reunited with the owner. If someone can pass a microchip machine over him .........
-
I remember a while back whilst driving home in Wiltshire all of a sudden a llama walked across the road,so phoned the police and started by saying......now I've not been drink driving but there's a llama in front of my car ;D
-
Brilliant Jaypo ;D
-
Was there a reaction ;D
-
Yep,she was killing herself laughing, said she believed me as there had been another call ;D
-
;D
-
There U go ;-)
-
From my sun lounger on the beach in Turkey, hello everyone. So glad I've got this forum as it gives me something to do rather than look at the depressing news. Never been a forum member before!
No llamas here, although lots of cats and kittens!
-
It's chucking rain down here :-\. Chillier. Lots of cats/kittens - they will survive ;-). Don't bring the home! Cats survive well with a little local TLC. Dogs probably less so but roaming in packs enables them to hunt and find food.
Who looks after any pets while you are away?
-
I hope to go and stay with my son and family in the USA on my own in November. Currently my son is touring by bike Denmark with his wife and children, 5 and 7. They will be in Europe for a month. We get daily updates, photos and videos. Looks wonderful. I’m having an armchair holiday!
-
We have an excellent dog walker who also boards dogs in her own home, max of two small to medium dogs at a time, so they get a home from home experience. They even get to sleep with her and go to the pub with her, she does it because she loves dogs rather than it being about making money.
I'm not going to bring any cats home, I'd love a couple of cats but too many go missing or end up run over where we live, and I'd be worrying all the time
The ones here don't look starving at all. There are a lot of kittens though, which is sad.
-
Ju Ju, I love seeing pics of friends and family on hols, especially the first hols people got to go on after lockdown, I celebrated with them even when stuck at home myself!
-
It's why I watch le Tour, a holiday across Spain and France this week without moving from the sofa ;D
-
Did you watch the three Race Across The World series? We've just finished them, wasn't so keen on the Canda one but the other two were great and inspired lots of good conversations with the kids and really opened my eyes too. Hoping to go inter railing next summer, anxiety permitting!
-
My neighbour aged 28 is inter-railing Europe - she had 3 weeks earlier this year B4 there was a problem over there, can't remember what. So she had 3 weeks home, earning money to prop up the next trip, beginning in Germany.
-
We recently took alpacas walking lead by a handler with a llama. All a bit touristy I know but an experience for us & grandchildren and we all learnt something from it. At a gentle pace too which was ideal.
-
No spitting hopefully ?
-
No spitting hopefully ?
I managed not too on that occasion :D

Apparently less foreign tourists are booking holidays in Wales - not surprising really with a tourist tax being muted. [March2023].
Soon there won't be anywhere to visit in the UK - with taxes on visitors, fuel and food costs going up, parking machines mobile phone access with no alternative to use cash ......... >:(
-
It's a shame isn't it? Wales, like Scotland depends on tourists. Wales is such a beautiful place, especially west coast,we've toured all over that country in the RV and sadly a lot of it is run down, ghost towns a plenty :'(
-
It's the various taxes that will stop us travelling in the UK. We have plenty of day trips as long as we can pay for parking. Otherwise it will be Zoos etc..
-
We used to love going to Edinburgh, once a year in September for three nights, due to my family history, love it there. Can't afford it now, even though we can still get there cheaply, accommodation costs are ridiculously high.
-
I don't know if hotel prices are up because of taxes though, or just general cost of living. We're going for a weekend to Bergerac in September this year instead, three nights hotel and breakfast for cost of one in Edinburgh.
-
I object to being taxed because I will be putting monies into the area anyway >:(.
Bergerac - le Tour has been in that region we didn't like it. :-\. Went to 1 campsite where they were playing Bridge, 100s of people at tables for 4, the toilets were dire :-X
-
Did you try any of the wine? We're not camping, couldn't do that on a romantic weekend 🤣
-
Local Wine was delivered to most camp sites at 5.00 p.m. often on a very old trailer pulled by an even older tractor ;D. This was 198?? and we bought cassis from the road side. The Loire was lovely, swimming in the river as it was SO hot. Bergerac area camp sites were awful, we found 1 run by a Dutch family eventually which was clean and well managed and, they spoke English ;D. Bergerac was the 1st City where I saw: ' can't remember the name ' : growing in pots outside. Hibiscus in deep purples and pinks
At the time we had an A frame tent so could turn it round if the wind changed. We went by road ......... down as far as Pau the 1st time, the 2nd to Strasbourg all work related.
-
We always used to stay overnight in Southampton the day before our cruise,it was always cheap and cheerful, rooms clean etc,for A BED ONLY now,you can be in excess of £100,so we've found somewhere else which includes breakfast for just a few £s more plus it's a 4* hotel,I think some companies just take the P,all jumping on the bandwagon to extort as much money as they can from us all
-
All costs have risen though. Cleaning, power, linen collection services .......... it pays to shop around then let the other companies know!
-
Sorry, should've said,it's a Premier Inn, I just don't know how they can justify more than 50% hike in their prices for a bed!! I think it's an excuse with some companies. >:(
-
It's the same with some foods, prices have shot up - due to transport costs, less workers = delays in deliveries, animal feed prices increasing.
Happy here today, it's drizzling hard ;D
-
oooh Holidays!!
Holidays are our 'thing' !!!
This year so far we have had - a cruise around the Canaries
A trip to Disney World
A cruise around the Mediterranean
In September we are off back to Florida again
Then later in the year we will go back to Spain on a road trip and continue our scoping out of areas (as we are in the process of preparing to move out there when hubby takes early retirement in 18 months)
-
As a child I wanted to visit Spain. Desperately. I think that I was drawn to the :sunny:; Flamenco dresses and the horses. Of course. Do check how your Health Care will be provided as well as paying of Taxes so that you don't get caught paying twice: here as well as abroad. Go for it? Finca, or town house? Countryside or in the middle of shopping/bars etc.? Beach front .......... I watch the various buying homes here and abroad ;). Will expect photos once you decide ;D
R U every home Clovie? :D
-
We're offon a cruise on Sunday Clovie ,back to Norway :)
-
You've kept that quiet jaypo :-\ :D. Packed yet?
-
Haha, wasn't sure I'd manage until a couple of days ago, nasty flare up of diverticulitis >:( just finished packing, early start tomorrow, driving to Southampton
-
What's early with you? We have to be up at 6.30 ish >:(

We do go away a lot! ;D But it is our weakness. No fancy cars, designer clothes and shoes etc - just travel! ;D
And yes CKLD we have all the finances etc sorted out, taxes, visa, health care etc etc.
Right now we DO do fancy our own place inland half hour max from coast with our own pool - but are aware that our needs might change as we get older - so it all could change...
-
We're offon a cruise on Sunday Clovie ,back to Norway :)
Fabulous Jaypo!
It's one cruise we've not done yet, the Fjords. You must recommend it as you are going 'back'? Who are you sailing with? :)
Have a fabulous time!
-
Go for it Girls . Anxiety keeps me house bound at times though we do get out and about spontaneously. 8). I've booked to go away at the end of the month, not telling anyone else so that we don't get asked here, there and everywhere. We are going to a place where we are likely to bump into people we know >:( - long story short ;D.
I'll be first in that pool Clovie, skinny dipping :o Have U made provision in case you need to return i.e. a small flat which U could rent out initially?
Someone I know, his Aunt sold her house much to her kids' disgust ;D and bought a small flat in Southampton. which they get to use. She sails regularly, now in her late 80s she has everything she requires on board: Dr., Spa, pool, shops, scenery if she wants to go on trips ......... cheaper than a rest home ;) 8)
-
Probably about the same time as you clkd, long way to Southampton.
Definitely recommend the fjords clovie, stunning,I was nearly in tears the first time I saw Norway, just breathtaking. We sail with Cunard :)
-
Ooh Norway I am envious! It is my dream to go on the Hurtigruten from Bergen all the way up to the arctic circle and go to the cathedral there at midnight. Waiting til the kids are older, it'd be wasted on 9 year olds. Do you know any of the places you are stopping at, are you going to do any excursions? Lol I am excited for you!
-
We've been quite a few times Penguin so don't do the tours anymore but we have done, loved looking at the blue ice glaciers, did a walking tour of Bergen, that was good, always great when it's a local telling you all about her town. Ooh that sounds fab what you are wanting to do,that's my kinda thing too.
-
Such a good time to go isn't it, with the midnight sun. Do you reckon Bergen is somewhere it'd be good to spend a couple of days? My Norweigan friend says the train journey from Oslo to Bergen is beautiful, about three hours. I can't wait to go, have money put aside already for when my husband says we can't afford it 🤣
-
Yes Bergen is nice, busy place, lots of shops and bars etc so come on Mr Penguin,Mrs Penguin wants a holiday ;D
Wonder how songbird's cruise is going, she was off to Alaska but hasn't there been an earthquake? Just heard something briefly on the news earlier
-
:o. certainly the world news reports the possibility of a tsunami in the region so hopefully the Cruise ships will be diverted.

I wondered whether, in order to get to Italy, that hiring a private driver/s with vehicle might be the way to get from UK to Milan :-\.
There's a niche in the market for European-speaking private drivers with a vehicle with loo to hire! All the buses are for 35+ people if 1 wants a loo on board :-\.
Nope :'(

Find a student to act as chauffeur, they drive your campervan, you pay costs.
-
The student would have to be at least bilingual/ fluent in Italian in case of accidents etc.. What I need is a MotoGP rider when they have a break ;-). Fluent in at least 3 languages, them :D
All Motorhomes have shower rooms and loos Puggles. Some campers [like ours] have a portapotty - others which are longer have a small shower room/loo. We aren't able to drive ourselves it would freak me out these days to get into Europe.
Trains; planes are completely out for me, can't do trains/coaches in the UK :-\

:thankyou:

When I first joined this forum years ago,it was because of anxiety and at the time I didn't know what it was,we were due to go on our Xmas cruise,it was all bought and paid for and the dread I felt was horrendous, just did not want to go,in fact, I hated even leaving the house, I just didn't know what to say to my OH,he'd be devastated but knowing him the way I do,he'd have been understanding,we go every year, always have and I love it but when this bleepin meno hit, everything went haywire but after joining the forum and all the lovely women on here who explained what I was feeling, I felt so much better, soon after the anxiety lifted and we got our cruise. It still recurs but at least now I know what it is. Bless this forum and all the amazing women on it ❤️❤️

Jaypo that first time, when you were dreading it and still went, how was it once you were on the cruise? Sometimes I get dreads before trips and at times have cancelled them. Did you end up enjoying yourself?
-
I really did penguin but then I'd come out of the anxiety by then,it started about July time and I couldn't fathom what was wrong, anxious tummy, just a feeling of dread and doom, come October I read about menopause and thought, this might be what was up,joined this site and everyone was so helpful. I've been cruising for years but this one time, blimey, I REALLY didn't want to go but yes, I did and loved it,as usual.I'm the same when one of the neighbours invite us over, I absolutely dread it and really have to force myself but after the event, I just keep thinking......that was ok actually 🙄
If you're still thinking about cruising penguin,do try it,if,when on it,you feel things getting too much, just to your cabin, for me,it feels like a safe haven, like my bedroom at home ❣️

See, I think I'd love it and be fine with it. But would need to go without kids. Took then on overnight ferry newhaven to Dieppe this year and 9 year old daughter hated it, felt sick, didn't like not being able to see land etc. We had a nice cabin, outdoors, upper deck, but she just isn't a fan of boats. Perhaps I need to try a weekend from Southampton with hubby first and see how we go
Really glad you ended up enjoying that cruise, and that you were over the worst of the anxiety by then. I have cancelled trips before, but when I've made myself go, I have always been glad I did. I am the same with anything that involves going out in the evening or involves lots of people. I am keen when its far away, dread it in the run-up but then invariably end up enjoying myself!
-
I always want to rush through the week, get home: to see whether I enjoyed the holiday/not :'(
-
I always want to rush through the week, get home: to see whether I enjoyed the holiday/not :'(
Hmm, not sure I understand. Do you mean you want to get home so you can look back and then decide if you enjoyed it?
-
What are we like?🙄 bloody anxiety 😡
Do try it penguin,I'm not a fan of the huge ships BUT you would barely feel it moving, get a balcony cabin, then you can stand outdoors,if you did feel nauseous,I always start taking stugeron a couple of days before we sail, because I can feel sick on the first couple of days but then we go on the smaller ships,so they do tend to get buffered by the wind.
Life is so short not to do the things we want but I completely understand what anxiety can do :'(
-
That's exactly it Penguin ......... working my way through the week and in general, most days are OK.
I can't face the sea incase it's ruff. DH has been through the Chunnel, even that freaks me out :o
Pity that we can't Teleport. [is that the word :-\ ]
-

Yep! Or magic carpet!!

Oh ........... I'd be hanging onto the edges for Dear Life
-
Actually yeah that might be worse than being on a plane.
-
Not the Smartie tube shaped plane ............ why would any1 ?
-
Had a lovely break in York and Newcastle. 3 fabulous meals and my new favourite cocktail - pornstar martini :o - lovely jubbly - however, slightly embarrassed asking for it ;D…..
I was also “in the dock” yet again in the York Dungeon - it is such a laugh but mightily scary in places 😱. This time I was accused of being a witch, running naked through the local park ;D . Just a normal Saturday night for me then
-
 I did wonder in the early hours of Sat morning how U were enjoying your break. U fitted a lot in!
World Tourism is being hit by all the upheavals going on :'( :'(. We have sat at the front of the house in sunshine, with a lolly each: I mentioned that it would nice to hear the sea rolling on pebbles: it was pointed out that the County would be in real trouble if the C was this close :o :D
-
So good to hear you had a great time songbird, well deserved.
Trust you to enjoy that drink ;D what next? Sex on the beach? ;D
-
Skinny dipping by moonlight .........
-
Is that a cocktail?? ;D
-
Could B - what would you mix ? I've never had one :D
-
;D. ;D
The only thing is, the cockapoo seems to have developed separation anxiety :-\..
He had been licking his paws a lot apparently! He was eating and drinking OK mind you - he seems to miss us though..oh dear, major guilt trip!
The pornstar martini has passion fruit and vanilla vodka (with a cheeky prosecco shot on the side) 😋🍸
-
Lots of pets worry when left in kennels. Did U take his usual blanket etc., was he fed his usual food? Don't make too much fuss of him as it reinforces his feelings: difficult I know ::). Go back to basic training every few hours and gentle commands to regain his focus, he'll be OK in a couple of days. Pets can make us feel guilty - our two cats would run to greet us on our return, then run into the garden to sit with backs turned :D.
Kennels are a totally different environment: noise, smells, new people ....... make sure that he doesn't have mites between his toes or a grass awl: was he on a concrete floor? Perhaps put something sticky on his paws for him to work at so that he doesn't damage the skin. i.e. honey ;-). Healing all round. Our JR would constantly lick her front paws until they were a kind of pink colour, turned out that there was a mite in her skin.
Vodka - spoils a good vanilla IMO :-X
-
I must admit, I treat him like a child (the Cockapoo, not OH ;D).
There are quite a few useful tips there, CLKD 🤔.
He’s used to being with us all the time and he is walked 4 times a day. It’s such a big change for him going into kennels- he’s not getting the same level of attention. Honestly - men! :o
-
Let us know how he gets on. It's a huge shock for a pup/kitty to be left and out of routine. No guilt though, needs must!
-
My little poodle x chihuahua would actually die if I put her in kennels, when she was in the vet hospital for 4 days, they told me to come and take her home as they couldn't get her to eat anything and as she'd eaten poison they were worried she wouldn't make it,so if my daughter stops looking after them then that's my cruise holidays over
-
Is she likely to stop looking after them ......... :-\
-
If she moves away at any point 🤷♀️
-
She can be paid to return to do dog sitting duties ;-)
-
Iceland volcano: Emergency declared over volcano Fagradalsfjall eruption concerns
Another country off the list and what about any cruise ships close by ??? :o
-
I think cruise ships stop sailing to Iceland,Norway etc around September/October time
-
What about going to see the Northern Lights? [which were evident over most of the UK last week but no one woke me >:( ::) ]
-
Hurtigruten continues all year round but I think doesn't start in UK, maybe Bergen. Planning that for retirement or at least when kids old enough to be left at home!
-
Get it booked penguin ! I don't do flying and being at sea leaves me cold .......... seeing a volcano in the raw might be exciting :-\ ;D. DH watches Stromboli and Etna on cameras ...... Stromboli has been off line for a week :o
-
Yes the Southampton ones all stop,Hurtigruten go to all the waaaaaaay out of the way places don't they?
-
Yes the Southampton ones all stop,Hurtigruten go to all the waaaaaaay out of the way places don't they?
Yes, I want to go from Bergen all the way to the artic circle and back. They stop everywhere along the way, sometimes just for a few hours. I just love the idea of it, can't wait.
-
I'd love to do Alaska but it's mostly fly cruises and I don't DO planes.
-
Ooh hadn't even thought of Alaska!
-
Beware there's a bear on the loose :
A skier just missed hitting a bear on the slopes of Lake Tahoe, California, when it quickly crossed the ski path.
No one collided with the bear and Tao Feng, who filmed the close encounter, says he saw the bear reunite with its mother on the other side of the trail.
-
Oh damn it,I'll have to cancel my skiing trip to Lake Tahoe now 😂
Blimey,me? On skis? I'd be more dangerous than the bear lol
-
Did U watch the clip? No one seemed phased, it all happened so fast! I've never been on skis .......
-
The bear is, however, seeking compensation from the reckless skier ⛷- he’s having to attend counselling following the dreadful incident. Blimey, it’s a repeat of the Gwyneth Paltrow carry on ::) ;D
-
 put some food in a closed vehicle, the bear will feel much better when he's destroyed the inside ;)
-
Off to Lanzarote on Thursday to spend Christmas with family. Can't wait to get in the sun and away from this damp climate and aching bones.
-
Hey Dierdre, come to see me,we're stopping in Lanzarote on boxing (I think) on our cruise 😀
-
My cousin lives there ............ but will be here from tomorrow ::)

Hope you have a great time, do you dock in Arrecife or Playa Blanca? A days not enough really.
-
Arecife,Jillydoll was saying there's a new ship terminal at playa blanca (I think) but no word of going there.
Hope you have fun too xx
-
Off to Jordan in Jan :). Not quite Colombia (last year's plan put on hold because OH had a new hip) but still lots to see - Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jeresh. Flying back from Sharm el Sheikh.
-

I like Arrecife best at night going to the tapas bars, do you have to be back on board before night time?

I'd love to do something different like that but wouldn't dare on my own. Have a great time.
-
It's always blowing a hoolie there when we go Dierdre,in fact last year, the ship couldn't dock and we ended up in Gran Canaria instead but yes, back on the ship by 5pm usually,we love sitting at the little marina where the bars and cafes are and people watching lol

That's brave Sheila with the unrest in that part of the World. 'card in the post' please ;-)
Day's out suit us thus far.

I do Europe on my own but never ventured further. Lanzarote is like my second home and I have family there so go there alot. Thought about doing cruises to see more of the world but you usually only get to stay a day and then off to the next port of call.
-
Dierdre there are a lot of solo passengers on cruises,so you'd not be alone, depending on the cruise, you sometimes stay over for two nights or at least one full day,it's a wonderful way to see places you'd never normally go to,especially Norway,Iceland etc :)
-

Do you have to dress up for dinner? That's the thing that puts me off. Are there other eating places on board where you don't have to glam up every night? I'm tempted to do a northern lights one next year.
-
Depends what ship you go on penguin,we like Cunard but it is usually "smart attire" then gala nights are posh frocks but other ships are less strict, just casual, like P&O etc you can dress up if you want but no strict dress codes, even on Cunard,if you don't want to dress up,then you can eat in the lido restaurant which has no dress code. Is it Norway you were thinking of?

Yes, Norway, I've wanted to go to the fjords for years! I like the idea of the Lido restaurant, I didn't realise that was an option. I am so not into dressing up these days, although perhaps I would feel better if I did 🤷♂️
-
Lido + swimming pool = nudity ;D
-
Norway is stunning, you really should try and go,first time we went there, when I opened the curtains in the morning,I was reduced to tears,I'd never seen scenery so beautiful in my life before......GGGGOOOOOOOO lol
Hey hey,no nudity clkd, you'd have to be careful not to spill your tea ;D

It does sound ideal, my son and wife ask me to go this year with them but i dont fancy the small inner cabins for singles, do they do the ones with balconies for single rooms?
-
MayB look at family suites Deirdre with an interconnecting door?
-
Oh don't do inside cabins, especially for the fjords,I'm sure some lines will do single balconies, off on our cruise tomorrow, can't wait 😁
-
Wrap up warm when you get to Lanzarote, been raining and cold since I got here yesterday! Hopefully sunny tomorrow and rest of week but temperatures lower than usual.
-
That's just typical Dierdre, been waiting for some warm weather for weeks now. We're just off the coast of France and it's blowing an absolute gale, the ship is a rockin and rollin
-
:beaurk: :barf: :sick02:

Been sunny today and warming up now, have a lovely time and Merry Christmas everyone xxx
-
It's a beautiful day now,no idea where we are lol I'm guessing off the coast of Spain. Merry Christmas!!
-
Christmas dinner might stay down then :)
-
😂 the alcohol helps Sheila
-
Hopefully jaypo the Captain will be aware of where the ship might be ? :-\
-

Welcome back Jaypo. Sounds like you had a lovely time 🍤🍹. And you treated yourself. Quite right too ::)
Cadiz is a lovely place. Mind you, we have a strange relationship with it as that's where we were put off our ship in 2014 when mum had a stroke onboard so mum and I had 2 weeks in a Cadiz hospital :o
-
Aww blimey songbird, what a shame, must've been scary for everyone :'(
Last time we were in Cadiz the bloody ship was in dry dock for 3 days 🤨
Least we got to Lisbon this time, they are definitely tidying up the place,it was very run down last time but it's looking much better.
Oh yes clkd walked round the ship, did it once, got bored ;D
-
Yep Jaypo, Lisbon is much improved now. We were there last year - an obligatory nata tart to start with- yummy - and then a rickshaw tour with a local - fab 👍.
-
I was taking a pic of the arch in the square and this policeman came up to me,thought omg, what have I done (not a guilty conscience at all 🤣) but he said (i think) you and husband together and he took our photo, lovely people
-
Now you'll be on some data base across Europe jaypo ............ ;D
-
"Has anyone seen this dodgy looking couple? Large reward on offer"
Just a wee joke 🤭. That was nice of him ::)
-
 were you given a copy or did U have to pay, we were caught in Butlins many years ago when a photographer wandered round the Tropical Bar taking snaps. I though that they were free :o
-
No,he took my phone and did it,wasn't going to say no,they carry guns there 😳😂
