:'( hi ladies I've been reading your posts lately for help of ideas. Bit of long story. I'm 62 and last period was around 9 years ago. Had usual hot flushes but nothing major. About 4 years in started with bit of dryness with sex and was going to start treatment when husband was killed in traumatic accident. I was put on antidepressants and menopause went on back burner. Now suddenly at 62 I started with a discharge and itchiness. I'm not sexually active. Had swabs taken and pain was horrendous. Ive had smear in 2019 and that wasn't as bad. Swabs negative but trace of blood on urine dipstick no infection. I was given canestan which helped a little. Have been given estriol cream but not started yet. I have been told I have perineum atrophy I feel as if I'm going through menopause again hot sweats weepy etc. Is it possible for symptoms to come back. I don't know if this atrophy has just got so bad that I've just started feeling it. I think it could be genitourinary menopause syndrome as also lose bit of wee if sneezing ect with full bladder. Sitting is sore. Feeling so alone with this and think I'm going mad.
-
Not going mad! U have had a lot of stress and grief to deal with. Often hormones can be upset when grieving, in that periods stop completely then begin as the years go by. It may be that your ovaries shut down for a while and have now begun to reactivate = symptoms.
Start the vaginal atrophy treatment. One dose this afternoon and another at night. Then every night for at least 2 weeks. I use 'ovestin', which have you got ? 'vagifem' is also useful, some find that they require that as well as ovestin on the outer labia or a moisturiser such as 'yes' or 'sylc'. I find that KY Jelly is enough for me.
When I get the need2P niggles I swallow two Nurofen tablets every 3 hours. That ease the nip as the spincter shuts off the urine flow.
:bighug: ........ CRUSE can be useful if you need to talk about your husband's sudden death, or MIND charity - they helped me when a friend died suddenly.
Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary useful to chart progress.
-
Hi we had just become grandparents for first time so had to support new baby and depressed daughter at the time then have lost 5 other close family members and friend in short period of time as well
I did wonder if I'd suddenly had a huge dip in estrogen as that what it feels like as if the reserves in my tank had just gone.
Gp has prescribed estriol cream 0.01%. Every night for 2 to 3 weeks then x 2 weekly. I'm due to go to London next week so hesitant to start this as need to wash out applicator but feel so unwell.
-
Get it up there Girl ;-). If necessary take a separate sponge bag with a thin brush to use privately. Warm soapy water and air dry should do it. Whoops cat jumped through window wanting his food, be back shortly ::)
-
Back now. He's not even our cat ::)
Be kind to yourself! What support is DD and GS getting now?
You will find that vaginal symptoms ease once you get the treatment started. It won't improve without.
I haven't been to London for over 25 years ........ :-\ don't know whether to say enjoy yourself ::)
Each box of ovestin has an applicator ........... I could do a good black market trade ;-)
-
Hi
Dd and ds are just managing things as they go along now. Ds is currently buying a house so it will just be me and my lovely labrador Alfie. I just have 1 tube of cream and 1 applicator. I feel so rubbish for want of a polite word don't understand what's happening. Perhaps if I'd been sexually active I would have clicked things were not good before now. Being a widow in menopause just exacerbates everything. Been on a zoom call with work which is mental health services but kept feet up which feels better
-
Sorry just seen you meant gs. He is 5 now and is OK. He refers to grandad as a star in the sky
-
Sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. It sounds very like VA, i used to find it difficult sitting down too.
Keep the treatment going, you may need to use it more than twice a week when you are on a maintenance regime. I never managed on twice a week.
-
As I am so sore any advice on coating the applicator with something to help or do I just grit my teeth. Also I have read on here about not washing area with soap does anyone use anything other than water. Sorry so many questions. Any ideas on what to take for the flushes. I've read about members taking? Seabuckwheat.
I've tried bicarb of soda half teaspoon in water which got rid of sting but gave me awful diarrhoea anyone had similar experience
-
Everything feels worse when you are under immense stress, symptoms do get worse that's for sure!
My experience with Vaginal Atrophy is the symptoms progressively get worse, never better, therefore the sooner you start the treatment the better because it can take months to take full effect. My symptoms became so chronic it was impossible to sit down, the burning was intense and the non stop peeing.
My regime is Vagifem pessaries, Ovestin cream used locally and very important, a feminine moisturiser, I use Sylk, this is now my daily routine.
These symptoms have all calmed down now and I am back to feeling normal again, getting that sorted will help you to feel calmer about the other issues you have with the menopause.
-
Thank you for all your help. The sylk is it just for outside area or is that internal as well.
-

You can coat the cream applicator with some Sylk, and also apply some to the vaginal entrance to aid insertion. For washing the vulva you can use an emollient such as Epaderm or Hydromol mixed with water between your hands. Cetraben cream is also good. You can buy a little pump dispenser from Boots.

-
Sylk is perfectly safe, I just slather it on the outside and inside.
There are other moisturisers if you don't like Sylk. Yes is another popular one but they are so important in helping Vaginal Atrophy symptoms.
I forgot to add I use Aqueous cream for washing but as Joaniepat has mentioned there are other options.
So many things to remember, its a new way of life!!

Hello AlfieBo,
I've recently had a similar problem to yourself, very dry, itchy and sore down below ( I have not been sexually active for many years ). This problem came as a bit of a shock ... anyway I was prescribed the Estriol cream same as you. I have not used the applicator - I didn't feel as if I would be able to insert it without a lot of pain, so I have VERY gently being applying a little on the outside and slowly and carefully inserting some more into the sore spot and going a little higher if I think I can take it ( just using a blob of cream on clean finger). This has helped a lot ...after about 3 applications. In fact after a few weeks of doing this I now feel fine. This cream has been fantastic and I've had no problem with it.
I hope you get as much relief as I have using this.
Best regards
Katie
-
Thank you Katie. Being suddenly widowed I've not been sexually active for around 5 years I've been meno for about 9. So like you this has suddenly reared its ugly head without my realising earlier. Unfortunately it's come with other meno symptoms ie hot flushes and anxiety not wanting to leave the house but think it's as I am so sore. Just feel like staying in my bed with hot water bottle and Alfie my lab. Luckily I can work from home. I've got the cream just need the confidance to use it scared it will make it worse. :-\
-
I did notice on another post meno stream that a couple of ladies in their 60s have oral HRT I thought this, wasn't allowed or is it up to Gp and health risk history
-
AlphieBo....I can't answer your question about oral HRT as its not something I have ever taken. I can understand you being nervous about using the Estriol - I was too.
What I did the first time I used it was just squeezed a little ammount on my finger and just dabbed it on ( I didn't rub as I was so sore).... I did feel just a tiny stinging and a warm feeling but it quickly went off and almost straight away it made me feel more comfortable and the 'prickly' feeling began to ease off pretty quickly after a few applications.
I would say just take it slowly and be gentle with yourself. There are some lovely ladies here with lots of great advice....please don't feel alone. X
-
Well Katie I've done as you've suggested and started with a fingertip just now. So will see. Thank you so much for your support I feel so alone. I've just told my daughter this evening what's going on. This menopause thing sucks from beginning to end. I am going to get some sylk tomorrow to moisturise outside bits.
-
Did you manage to get some Sylk AlphieBo?
How are you getting on with the Estriol?
If you can't get hold of any Sylk, I also tried a little bit of Coconut oil which soothed the area....this didn't sting at all.
-
I'm so sorry about your husband. If you have meno symptoms other than VA you can still start systemic hrt, there is no age limit now. Transdermal is safer than oral so patch, gel or spray would be better. If your gp won't help you can ask for a referral to an nhs meno clinic. Have a looked at the Advice for Husbands pinned post, there are many symptoms you may not have connected with oestrogen deficiency. A small amount of oestrogen is produced by the adrenals and in the fat cells and this can decline after meno, it also takes a little time for the ovaries to die completely once your periods have stopped.
-
Thank you for your support. Daughter has just been with some sylk and flowers. I'm beginning to wonder if some issues I've had in last few years which were put down to grief and treated with antidepressants have been menopause and everything colided. Now the tank is empty and no antidepressants meno symptoms are rearing up again. Felt I was well and truly going mad. Took Alfie my lab out forced myself to go as getting a bit agoraphobic and hot flush in the park occurred felt an old fool. Will try more of the cream tonight
-
With appropriate treatment VA can be eased ! Some require 'vagifem' nightly. If the area is sore and stingy, break the pessary and apply gently onto the areas that need it. Put the finger in as far as is comfy for a couple of nights, then increase as symptoms ease.
Let us know how you get on.
-
Thank you its cream so I can use small amount at first. I've just read the advice for husbands as suggested. I'm giving it to my son and daughter and taking it to work tomorrow.
-
Well have decided to be brave and try some cream in the inserter thingy. I put some sylk around it to help. And now ladies I feel as if there is a fire going on down below. I've taken 2 paracetamol but so tempted to get in the shower and wash it out. Is this normal. Does it get better :'(
-
Oh AlphieBo, I'm sorry you've had this problem...hope you feel a bit easier this morning?
I hesitate to give advice as this problem has been new to me too, and so I can only say what's worked for me.
When the soreness began I only used coconut oil ( a solid block in a jar from a well known health shop), this did not sting and soothed but did not clear the problem.
The Estriol cream only stung on the first and second application but only very slightly and quickly eased off. I have only used a clean finger to apply and not used the applicator. In time I may have to insert the applicator but at the moment I want to take things slowly and this seems to have worked for now.
I did once use Sylk and it stung me ... this is such a sensitive area and what works for one may not work for someone else.
I hope you can get some relief soon.
-
Apparently Its very common for the cream to sting when you first use it, the recommendation is to mix with the moisturiser until your body gets used to it. If you eventually decide the cream is not suitable try the Vagifem pessaries and use Ovestin cream around the vulva area alongside the moisturiser.
It’s all one great big faff until you find the regime that suits you but it will work eventually, it all needs time and patience but you will get there!
-
Thanks ladies. The fire feeling did go off a bit. Have used sylk this morning. Have had to come into work so trying not to sit too long. Washing after using the loo and using creams takes such a long time but hey ho. Wondering if my pelvic floor is playing up tbh as got awful lower back and nder carriage ache.
-
You shouldn’t need to wash every time you use the loo, not a good thing to do anyway as you might be washing away the treatment which is the last thing you need.
-
In so much discomfort have had to come home from work.
-
If this were me I would stop the Sylk and try using just the Estriol cream for now.
Perhaps a good idea to knock off from work early and have a quiet weekend.
Is there something nice you could treat yourself to?
Ps. When my problem was at its worst I wore a dress/ skirts and no underwear.
-
My experience with Vaginal Atrophy is the symptoms progressively get worse, never better ........
Whereas when my GP diagnosed VA and prescribed appropriate treatment, I had relief within a couple of weeks. It was like razor blades :o up there >:( until the cream got to work.
I wouldn't use anything other than the VA treatment as too much too soon could aggravate symptoms. If the vaginal area is dry = thin skin, there may be some ultra-sensitivity initially. A little amount 3 times a day followed by a full dose if the vagina is less sore the next night. For however long it takes to ease symptoms. Some require 'vagifem' nightly as well as 'ovestin' or moisturisers.
Some cultures wash after every toilet visit ;-).
-
Hi ladies I'm home now luckily being a med sec I can work from home. So lap tops warming up and I've got feet up. Just want to have a good cry. This is pants to put it mildly. Frightened this could be something else I feel so horrible and no one apart from lovely lab Alfie to give me a hug. I'm going to have to hit the painkillers but have to watch my ibs doesn't flare.
-
U have a good cry. It will do you good!
Get a cushion with the middle cut out to rest the bum and give the vaginal area some space.
If you have IBS, could your Surgery give U pain relief patches? 'nurofen' never upsets my IBS, slow transit >:(. Occasionally I get heart burn if I take capsules then lay down to sleep.
I doubt if your symptoms are anything serious. What could it be ? A little knowledge and all that ::) ::) and we have a thread about diagnosing everything under the sun.
-
Surgery are not very good. I had colonoscopy last year had to beg for that it was clear but 10 days later emergency ct scan which showed diverticular disease so i take 10mg amitryptaline for that along with usual ibs stuff given by gastric consultant.
-
Hello AlfieBo. I have just read this thread. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I am glad you have Alfie. He sounds adorable.
For me personally, I never heard of vaginal atrophy until I joined this forum and realised I had it. It took me a while for my symptoms to improve so if you are not feeling better now please do not think you never will.
A menopause Dr told me that washing in water will dry out the skin and suggested I apply E45 cream before a shower, wash it off and after the shower to reapply.
Sylk is a very gently lubricant and hopefully you will not react to it. I use Ovestin cream which is applied using an applicator. I am unable to insert it without Sylk cream.
I know this is all very overwhelming and confusing but please be reassured you can ask anything on here. Never apologise for asking questions as we are all here so support each other.

Hi I've taken antihistamine and trying to keep calm but anxiety is through the roof and palpitations

Hi I've taken antihistamine and trying to keep calm but anxiety is through the roof and palpitations
The antihistamine will kick in soon. Although hives are uncomfortable, they should go soon. Think of it like this, your skin is saying 'I do not like this'. The hives are a way of letting you know. They will soon go. Maybe applying some soothing cream to your skin will help you to feel more comfortable too.
-
Hi gp just rung she's asked did I think it's stress :-\ I said don't do this to me everything I get since hubby died is stress
She's going to speak to a colleague and ring me back. Could it be body reactibgvto oestrogen or reaction to the fillers on the estriol. Anybody had this reaction.
-
I would think it's a reaction to the preparation or the fillers. Seems that your GP is keen to put everything down to stress :-\. Hopefully she will phone back. Do let us know.
-
That is a very annoying response from your GP! I agree with CLKD that it could be the fillers. If you stop using it and the hives go then you would know if it is that.
-
I am so scared a I am physically shaking. Trying to keep calm but all she was asking was about mental health. So annoyed as this stuff was helping so much.
-
There is nothing to be scared of AlfieBo. An allergic reaction is not nice but it will pass. It is a shame you reacted to this but there are other forms of vaginal atrophy treatment. You need not think this means you cannot take anything else. Once the hives go then you can try another treatment. This will pass. Carry on posting so we can support you.
-
Hi gp rang back can't see today. She said stop the estoril.will see me tomorrow. Anxiety is awful shaking and weepy. Son has collected Alfie the lab and taken him out. Feel so low
-

Would you like to say more about what is causing the anxiety? It is nice your son is taking Alfie for a walk.
-
Since we turned life support off on hubby I've had awful health and general health anxiety. Lost 5 family members not including hubby in 3 years. The Alfie my lab got cancer. Then son and I got covid before vaccines were around all with menopause circling. Now just when I feel I'm coming out of the fog va rears it's head and the cream was working and now hives it's just too much.

I can understand this. I think when going through as much as you have, it will mean any stress triggers the anxiety. Perhaps you are feeling everything will go wrong again. Maybe it would help to tell yourself this is not the same as the other things you have had to deal with. This is a horrid reaction but it will pass. This time next week this will all be over with and the hives should totally go.
I know how awful it is to feel overwhelmed. You have had so much to cope with.
-
Well it's nearly midnight and I'm in bed with cold flannel on my bits and urticaria all over. Palms of hands bit swollen trying to hang on for gp appt tomorrow morning as don't want to go to a and e. So frightened and anxious which isn't helping. :'(
-
Alfie, are you still taking the sea buckthorn? Could it be this what's caused the hives?
I have reactions to many medications including herbals.
Just a thought.
I hope you managed to get some rest. x
-
No not taking it since Monday. Been up all night. Hands in water so itchy. Got the shakes
-
Just re reading thread... you have appt. to see Dr. today? What time?
To put your mind at rest why not ring the health line and ask for some advice/reassurance, just until you get to see GP?
Keep posting and letting us all know how you are doing.
I have to go out soon but other ladies will be around I'm sure....
Will check back in with you later today .x
-
I am sorry to hear you have had such a bad night. You must be exhausted. I hope you are able to go to the appointment today and your Dr is helpful.
-
Hi Kate thank you for checking in. I did a, 111 on line it said see gp today. So i I've had a, shower to cool down my son in law has taken Alfie for me today. Appt is at 10.30. Trying to keep calm as anxiety makes this worse. Doing some deep box breathing. Hands have come down a bit since antihistamine at 6. 30. Daughter is away and son at work at the hospital. I was stupid taking the hrt cream and the herbal thing. Although it does say hives on estriol. :'(

You are not stupid. You could not have known you would have a reaction. Deep breathing is a very good idea. I do not know if this helps but before your appointment maybe you could try to listen to something to distract you. Maybe relaxing music or the radio.
As you have allergies you may want to take an antihistamine daily. I have to do this myself.
-
I may have to carry an epi pen. 20 years ago ended up in hospital severe allergy to metronidazole. The in 2020 came out in similar rash query reaction to lanzopeazole. That lasted 3 weeks and post viral fatigue followed it. So gp thinks that was a virus and called it erythema multiform but we can't be sure. Have had some toast as didn't eat much yesterday. I am exhausted .

I also have to carry epi pens with me due to a severe allergy to sesame seeds. It does sound like you may have a virus if you have had similar before. I hope you manage to keep the toast down. Maybe you could have a nap after your appointment.

Hi waste of time. She chopped and changed her mind initially oral steroids abd stronger antihistamines then came looking for me to change her mind to betnovate gel which is quite strong. I asked her how did she expect me to spread this over my entire body. I've come home hot and itchy have put a bit on my wrists.. Had a shower first to cool down. If it gets worse ill have to go to a and e. She then had the nerve to say have a nice afternoon >:( :'(

How frustrating! Does this mean you cannot use the HRT any more? I looked up the condition you mentioned and it seems it is treated with steroid creams.
-
She wouldn't discuss the meno issues as well as the urticaria so have to go back but definately not with her. The prob is its large areas of urticaria and you can't use betnovate on large areas :-\ any way I've put on wrists and behind ears. I'm so tired and now waiting for this va to kick off again

The Dr sounds so unhelpful. Both of the issues are connected so they really should have discussed both. I really hope you can find a new GP. Does this mean you do not know if the estidol cream is causing the reaction? If it is the condition the Dr mentioned then would it be okay to use the cream?
-
She wouldn't discuss it so I don't know. She said don't use it over the telephone yesterday. I'm going to try and get this urticaria under control and then ask for an appointment with gp interested in menopause because she clearly wasn't she wanted to know my hobbies and said have a nice afternoon as I itched my way out. I have thought about gettibg an appt wit Dr Newson privately. I'm so fed up. For all I know this could be a virus.

I can understand your disappointment. To ask you if you have any hobbies is dismissive. Just to let you know, you can ask Dr Currie a question via email. She is the person who set up this forum. She charges £30. Here is a link

Hi Alfiebo,
It seems that hives can be a symptom of Covid- 19! (And diarrhoea, which I think you’ve also mentioned.)
Here is the info about hives:
https://casereports.bmj.com/content/14/3/e241793
Hope this might help!
-
What a carry on. So sorry to read what happened this morning, Alfie.
I was hoping you would have been sorted out by now.
Are you still in as much discomfort?
Please let us know how you are getting on.
Sending very best wishes. x
-
Hi the hives are coming up and down this evening and I feel awful so expecting another sleepless night. :'(
-
Hi the hives are coming up and down this evening and I feel awful so expecting another sleepless night. :'(
I can imagine how uncomfortable that is for you. Have you looked up urticaria to find out how others manage the symptoms? I saw there was information on the NHS website.
-
AlfieBo, it sounds like some kind of histamine intolerance or mast cell activation syndrome issue to me. Have you looked into that?
Google the words 'Tina Peers estrogen histamine intolerance' and then basically google Tina Peers and read/watch everything she has to say.
She also has her own private menopause clinic which specialises in HRT and histamine intolerance. If I need estrogen again I will try to see her or someone at her clinic next time, instead of Newson. Because my Newson doctor was useless with my estrogen related side effects, even after telling her I'd been to A&E....

Hi well got about 3 hours sleep. Spots worse but now looks like erythema multiform which I had 2 years ago. Its horrible and can be a reaction to a virus or medication. Looking at estriol side effects one is erythema multiform. Takes weeks to go and can make you feetl very tired. So I've rung in sick and done an e consult with gp to ask for second opinion from one given by the unhelpful gp yesterday daughter is coming to take Alfie out as I need to keep out of the sun. Feel poorly and anxious. Alfie is tired as he was wondering why mum was in the shower at 3 this morning. :'(

I really am sorry to hear this. Are there any specialists in erythema multiform? I wonder if a specialist needs to monitor any medication you are on so you do not have this reaction again. I hope you hear from the GP soon and they are more helpful. Maybe you could ask to be referred to a specialist.
-
Hi yes I'm going to either dermatology or immunology. Alfies back from his walk. I feel so anxious and waiting for va to strike

I hope you get an appointment soon. I can understand why you are anxious about VA flaring. Do you think it would help to find a support group or similar? Maybe the women on there could share tips on how they treat their VA symptoms.
-
Hi maybe but at present keeping with you lovely ladies at least until I get proper diagnosis.
-
Hi maybe but at present keeping with you lovely ladies at least until I get proper diagnosis.
It is lovely to read you are finding the forum helpful. :) The hot weather will be making you feel worse too. It is very draining.
-
Hi have you been covered from head to foot in hundreds of urticaria splodges asxwell? In my hair down below swollen hands. As not sure what I'm reacting to think I will wait until I get 2bd opinion from Gp practice. Who still haven't responded to my e consult I sent at 5 this morning. Did a bit more researching erythema multiform can come from Thrush and I'm just wondering if I had that at the start of all this. This heat isn't helping.
-
Hi Alfie, just a little note wondering how you are coping in the heat today and hoping you have managed to get some rest.
Katie x
-
Hi Katie. Spurs reducing its definately erythema multiform as the red torn to purple then brown look like someone's painted all over me with brown fingertips. Gp thinks it's viral and said wait till its gone then try a tiny bit of estriol. I'm so wary of this but will find out for sure that way I suppose. Soreness and dryness coming back. Been off it 5 days today. Thank you for checking in its much appreciated. Hope your still getting on OK
-
I'm fine Alfie, thank you, just wish you had been able to get the same relief.
I never used the applicator filled up with cream....I just put a bit on my finger (about half inch) and I've been lucky in that's all I seemed to need because it worked for me.
What you describe sounds awful, I have had reactions to medications and creams in the past but nothing like you've had with this....that is IF it has been the Estriol.
Once you try again you will know for sure one way or the other....I hesitate to write this as I don't want to frighten you but it may be an idea to have someone with you when you do try the cream again....perhaps one of the other ladies on here with more knowledge than me could give you some reassurance/ advice.
I hate to think of you alone and having another reaction.
This may NOT happen at all, it may just be me over thinking.
🤔
Katie x
-
Hi yes I thought that myself.
-
Hi ladies.
Well the spots have gone and just slight hyperpigmentation left. Gp advised restarting estriol small amounts at a time so started last night. If rash happens again we know it was that. So wish me luck
-
Good luck AlfieBo! :)
-
