Title: Random bone pains
Post by: KAH on October 27, 2020, 07:20:59 AM
Hi ladies,
I just wondered if anyone can relate?
I’ve been getting random bone pain for the past few months, mostly in my legs, either in my knee or shin bones. It’s not constant, in fact it can come and go in a few minutes or sometimes it aches for hours. It moves between those areas so doesn’t stay in one spot although my left leg, particularly my knee is the worst.
At the same time I’ve had what feels like a pulled muscle in my back, mid way down on the right side, that too isn’t constant but hurts when I twist certain ways and sometimes when I sneeze or take a deep breath.
I’m so fed up of worrying about all these aches and pains, my night sweats have come back with a vengeance, I’m wondering if they’re more anxiety based than peri but of course my brain is saying Night sweats + bone pain = bone cancer! I did see my gp about a month ago and he said if it was anything serious the pain would be much worse through the night, which it isn’t, in fact it rarely hurts when I’m in bed.
So fed up, please let me know if this sounds familiar, just so I can stop my brain going crazy! Thanks xx

Hi kah

Yes, I can totally identify with this. I had it about this time last year, and it's come back again. It sounds the same. My calf ached so much last week too, I thought I might have a DVT. But, it's not as bad, and I get it in my other calf too.

The other thing is what feels like bubbles moving about in my calves

The bone aches can be in my shins, my ankles, my thigh bone, and sometimes my elbows and wrists!

Sorry to hear you’re feeling the same but also nice to know I’m not alone!
Funnily enough my calf was hurting yesterday too, it didn’t last long though and has gone now. I wonder if it’s the weather, strange that you had it this time last year and again now. How long did it last last year, please don’t say all winter 🙈

Hi KAH,

This  is me I get bad months where the pain will move around my back, arms, legs, ribs, face, hands, feet. The pain is always changing places. Some days are worse then others and like you I’m fine in bed. Some times the pain can be long, other times sharp like someone sticking a pin in me?

I’ve been to the doctor plenty off times (had this for two years now), had X-rays, MRI see specialist like a rheumatologist. It can get worse for weeks or months then it gets better then comes back again?

I now thinking it’s menopausal related. I live in Australia and I find the worst time of year for me is the last 4 months of the year? About the same time my menopause started.

I’m living for the day where I have no pain or complaints again.

Yes this has been really exhausting for me for a few months now, unfortunately mine seems constant but easing at night so maybe a tension thing also? I get it elbows, wrists, knees, ankles & shins too. Sometimes a dull ache then some days it’s feels tingly cold?! The worse which has set off my health anxiety is this burning/stinging back ache which is also constant paracetamol doesn’t help at all  :'(

The flushes are definitely a symptom of low oestrogen, the aches could be but there are causes too. Are you on HRT? I would start by increasing oestrogen and see what happens. I had to add testosterone too to improve muscle tone. I had pain in my hips and repeatedly pulled muscles which has been cured by hrt.

I can’t go on HRT as I had breast cancer last year. I can actually cope with all the aches and pains as long as I know that’s all they are! It’s the anxiety they cause that’s the problem ☹️

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Do read the threads on vaginal atrophy too!

Good footwear is essential
Check how you sit whilst driving, typing, at the table, watching TV
Gentle stretching of all the muscle groups twice a day but not enough to cause cramp
The back stinging may be a nerve at the surface of the skin which is tender

I’ve had the burning back pain, I’ve found it to be tension related. As soon as I’ve relaxed and not held my body so tensely, it’s eased off

Sorry you can't try hrt, it's likely to be meno but I don't think you can tell without adding oestrogen. I thought my hip pain was the joints wearing out and hadn't expected hrt to help. I really don't think it's bone cancer though. My dog had it (probably still does but so far still alive). It's extremely painful and only in one place, and there's a lump on the bone. She's normally good natured but nearly took the vet's hand off when he poked it.

It might be worth seeing a physio about your back. We can get away with poor posture and lack of exercise when we're young but sadly not as we get older (not saying this is the cause, just that we need to be aware of it).

I thought that about bone cancer, I imagine it would be constant, very painful and just in one place, mines the opposite in every way......it comes and goes, is bearable pain wise and moves around! It’s amazing what the menopause can cause isn’t it! Things you wouldn’t imagine could be caused by low oestrogen, it’s the most bizarre thing!

Anyone remember growing pains, particularly affecting thighs and shin bones  :-\

I think my burning back could well be tension, but some days back in August I was so exhausted I would just stay in bed for days & also didn’t eat much so not sure if I’ve weakened my back? Been trying to do some gentle back exercises to try & strengthen it up. I’ve also Dr. Googled bone cancer incredible what health anxiety does to you, but because the general aches seem to move around different joints I doubt it is. Maybe it is like growing pains but in reverse  ;)

Dr Google knows what exactly  ::).  Better if you must google to look at NHS web-sites ;-).

Better not to google all all, but ask on here  :-*

I’ve learnt the hard way and do not google anything now. Problem is at the height of my health anxiety I googled pretty much everything so I have so much info in my brain that always points to the worst possible scenario 😟

I’ve come to the conclusion I’d of been dead months ago according to Dr. Google  ;D doesn’t make health anxiety any easier to live with though. As my doctor says health anxiety is very real & very debilitating  :'(

It’s good that your doctor has that attitude, I’ve met plenty that don’t 😖

My husband never asks why I feel like I do, he accepts even though he can't empathise.  To find a GP with that attitude is important: one that listens, takes on board that the person can't alter how they feel and treats accordingly rather than what he thinks should be the answer.

KAH
my first year of menopause my back pain was every day all day for a year. As I said saw specialist and doctors and had scans.

I truly believe it was menopausal related, but it took to the end of the year and something my doctor said to realised I didn’t help the problem.

July 2018 I had a hysterectomy still got my ovaries, four months later I started first with virginal atrophy and by Christmas back pains. When I had my operation I was told not to lift heavier then 10 kilograms. I took this to far and for too long. Which course my upper back to become weak. So then I went you YouTube and did all these exercises, and hurt my rib :o more pain.

My doctor put me with a exercise physiologist who gave me the right exercise to do. I recommend Pilates, it’s changed my life and stopped being a baby and started lifting and carrying stuff like I use too.
I still get my random pain but not constant and I can work (cleaner) with taking pills.

When I have a bad day, I continue like normal 15 minutes of Pilates every morning and 30 minutes walk. I just keep going, I’m scared to relax as I don’t want to go backwards again.

As my doctor says strong core equals a strong back.

It’s so easy to become too scared to do anything for fear of making yourself feel worse! I am fairly active, I walk the dogs for an hour every morning and then am on my feet all day (I’m a baker). IVe just re-started doing some gentle exercise in the hope it’ll help. At the moment it’s making the pain in my back slightly worse but I’m hoping once my body gets used to it again, it’ll help. I’m a member of Davina McCalls fitness program and there’s so many different exercises to choose from, I’ll focus on the core strength ones I think, sounds like it makes sense!

The great thing about core exercises as well as helping your back, I have abs  :)

In a month time you should notice that you’ll will feel stronger and be able to hold a plank for longer.
A plank is the best exercise you can do to build a strong core, I’ve been doing them for years.

At the start of the year it was recommended to me to do a side plank. I started with my knees still on the ground and couldn’t hold for long. When I good at these I did the next step side plank on toes and elbow. Would wobble everywhere and could only how for seconds. I’m now about 20-30 seconds each side and do this two times each side.

You will slowly get stronger and your body will benefit

When I first read this I wondered why picking up bits of wood would help  ;D
My exercise involves sheep/cow/horse poo and a wheelbarrow so I'm not on the right wavelength.

Ha ha, sorry about that if you google Pilates plank that should help you.
A good YouTube site or you can google Kalm Pilates. Nice slow Pilates. Be careful I did a YouTube Pilates with some young girl, it was full on and way to fast (I was jumping around in every direction) and damage my rib.
