Title: Lockdown ends [What to do during the crisis]
Post by: CLKD on March 17, 2020, 01:19:33 PM
I found a dark cobweb and dirty window sill at the weekend  :o.  So that is job number 1 - when I can be bothered !
Lots to see on TV that isn't virus related
Radio if necessary

Weeding.  Feeding wild birds and pond fish.  Shopping when necessary.  Planting seeds when the weather warms up.

Reading - probably charity shops will close what *will* I do then  :o
Magazines and daily papers

I have unwrapped DVDs to catch up on from C.mas as far back as 2017  :D

Just been sent log in details for my DC's school work, so looks like i might be a teacher for quite a few weeks  ;)

I am going to write a very big list of all the little jobs that need doing, but no one ever does and stick it on the fridge. That way, when my DH starts getting on my wick, i can point hime to the list. Either that or lump him with a heavy object :-\

;D same here.  I have 5 baskets to sort through: some is my stuff, some is from Mum's property 1 not touched since it landed here 14 months ago.  In a corner. Collecting dust.  Trouble is, once I sort I have to find places for stuff  :-X

I cleaned the mirrors in my bedroom today.
Plus I dusted and polished the bedroom furniture too. There must've been 10 inches dust at the back of the mirror on my dressing table.  :o   ;D
Then I cleaned my fan that sits by my bed. Dropped it, dust off the front everywhere. 😡 😆 it's amazing how much dust a fan can hold.  ;D I think most of it comes off my dog! 😆
As for the oven. 🤷‍♀️ Can't decide yet if I want to do it. 😆 if I do, I?ll buy that Astonish product that's advertised on tele.  See if that works like it says it does, 🤷‍♀️.

JD I bought that astonish oven cleaner (yep the advert worked on me 🤣) its bright orange and comes with its own sponge and it did a really good job of my oven and it didn't stink and no burns like I got off that other oven cleaner.

So go on you know you want to clean that oven sooooo badly 😁 x

Well the oven didn't get cleaned! I blame my daughter who set us up to Netflix and introduced me to an Australian series called Offspring. It says it's mature watching, so my daughter thinks I qualify. it's a bit um naughty......so I won't suggest it to my mum, who seems to zoom in on any swear words etc in books I lend her, so I have to go back to books to see what was so offensive. Fern Britton, you have offended my mum! Tomorrow is another day for potentially cleaning my oven. I shall celebrate when I've done it!

I was going to clean the oven, honest! But my excuse was toothache! I had to see my dentist. He produced a fetching mask for me to wear in the waiting room, as I am apparently vulnerable! Not for he was checking my teeth! Funny how everyone gave me a wide berth once I put it on!

i was watching the local news tonight and they had an ?expert? advising parents how to keep kids amused now schools are closed.   God knows how I got through bringing up my kids without having an expert tell me how to occupy them!  ;D ;D

We had a big dressing up box, we had a 'treasure box? full of bits of fabric, toilet roll middles, cardboard, coloured paper, pipe cleaners, silver paper, paper plates etc.   I can honestly say we were never bored, never.  We all discussed this over tea tonight and both my adult kids were here and they remembered making stuff and going out to feed the ducks and collecting acorns, bird feathers etc.

I HATE the word 'expert' - suddenly we have them about this new virus  >:(

Mum was a teacher.  Dad refused to have a TV whilst we were growing up but there was 'listen with Mother' at 1.45 B4 Womens Hour.

We had a gate leg table which was often used as a tent/wigwam/cave - a large blanket was put over to hide us up.  We had hours of fun under it either inside or on the lawn.  Card games.  Piano practice  :o.  Sand pit in the garden.  Small patch of garden as well as mustard and cress on a flannel [no kitchen roll then]; or a hyacinth or broad bean in clear glass so that we could watch the roots growing.

Scooters.  Cycles.  A tin bath on very hot days with warmed water tipped in.  Chasing butterflies.

Magic painting books?  messy though.  Flour dough to make shapes?  Messy.  If it was raining we often had as many as 5/6 kids in Mum's house playing.  Plastacine.  Fuzzy felts.

The  best thing i ever bought for my two was a double swing set. DD was 2 and DS 1 at the time, and 12 years on it is still used. They go up there and have their little chats (moaning about me probably), and even i have the odd swing on it when nobody looking. Apart from that, it was always a huge cardboard box that they had the most fun with. Simple things.....

He gave the mask to me so that people would keep away from me!

He thought the pain was caused by trauma, not that I was aware of causing that. We?re going to see if it settles down. I wouldn't have gone so soon, but was worried about leaving it and not being able to get treatment. I'm reassured and if it doesn't settle I can go back as they will provide a service for emergencies, even if they have to shut.

I've attempted to clean the oven today. I need to remove the glass from the door in order to screw the door handle on as it is very loose. Done it before, but the screws won't budge. DH had a go too, then said my daughters partner can do it for us. No he can't says I, we are in isolation! It will have to be used with great care.

Yes tried that. Leaving it overnight, see if we can unscrew it or heat it up and see if that helps. Tomorrow is another day! I've left the shelves soaking in cleaning stuff in a bag and stuff inside the oven overnight. I consider cleaning the oven, the shower cubicle and the gutters the worst jobs. Go on like this and the house will be cleaner than it's been for a long time! And no one to appreciate it apart from me and DH.

I can't seem to settle to anything.  I knit, crochet, read and sometimes paint but I feel ?on edge?.  usually I crave peace and quiet to do my hobbies but right now I am worried about how my Mum will cope without me visiting so often.  They phoned yesterday and said the GP was prescribing a very low dose of something (can't remember name) so that they can give her some when she gets upset and anxious.  I think that's a good idea.

I am going tomorrow to take her some lavender soap, shower gel and body spray which she loves (Woods of Windsor) and a lovely purple primrose.  They wouldn't let my brother visit yesterday so he will probably just pop a card through.

It is eerily quiet on the roads here but I have  noticed lots of different faces in the village as people are coming to their second homes to get away from crowded cities.  Trouble is they are buying all the stuff from our local shops.

But that's what the tourist trade needs PF - Wales is complaining about visitors but seem to forget that tourism is what keeps many shops
open  :-\.  Now that everyone has panic bought and your shops are re-filled what's the problem ?

Keeping apart is important.  Not touching others is important.  It is less likely to be transferred by air droplets than by contaminated surfaces.  Eateries should have good cleansing practices anyway.

Oven cleaning.   :o ........

Well when watching the Italian Medic on Channel 4 News this evening, who has had the virus ..... she is insistent that people should remain inside unless absolutely necessary.  But she wasn't able to say why they have such a high level of deaths  :-\ so in some parts of Italy isolation simply didn't work.  I wonder what the UK Government will suggest tomorrow?  People need sunshine, fresh air, communication with others ...... maybe they have gone out in their droves to support small businesses  :-\ : what's the difference to my walking to our village shop to buy the Sat. paper earlier  :-\.  We were out about 20 mins. in all.

The Staff were busy loading shelves, why they didn't do that B4 people arrived - they open at 5.00 to accept the paper deliveries - we spoke to 1 person behind the Till and a lady who kept her distance.  It's those who are carrying the Bug that are the most dangerous which could be any 1 of us.

What are you talking about ?your shops are refilled??   We can't get eggs, sugar, loo rolls, pasta, tea bags etc.    There are people staying in caravans who are like a crowd of locusts in our local shops.  They obviously leave their homes full of tins and packets and frozen food and then come down here and use up all ours!    Norfolk doesn't need them and Cornwall has also asked them to stay away too.  They are coming for purely selfish reasons because since pubs and restaurants are closed so they are not spending money, only on food in shops.

I wouldn't dream of going away from home at a time like this. I've pushed back our UK break to September and can change it again further along should the need arise.

There's a weird sense of people not yet accepting reality and viewing the school closures as an opportunity to have an extended break! Its actually deeply concerning. No-one should be out and about except for quick trips to buy essential goods or walking in open areas.

Australia and America have had to close beaches because of people's complete stupidity acting as though it's life as normal.

Shops round here aren't fully restocked yet by a long stretch. I have NEVER yet seen any hand sanitizer (nor loo rolls or tissues for over a week now).

Same here stellajane. Forgotten what toilet rolls look like.  We have 2 rolls left and then we will be using blue workshop rolls which my OH found in his workshop.  Same with hand sanitiser.

PF I am more worried about they are bringing rather than what they're taking. If you want a way to spread it round the country this is it. If you have enough for a couple of weeks all these d*cks will have worked out they've bought a load of food they're never going to eat and things will go back to normal.

All tourist areas need visitors.  What they don't need is people buying, but that's where the shop managers come in!  They have to take some control.  What happened to printing large signs with Rules?  Nor does any area need the bug being carried ........ but as isolation in Italy hasn't stopped the death rate  :-\ and we should be getting a dose of fresh air ....

PF - which shops in particular?  I know that Norfolk is hard to get to with no motorways [that coast road is slow at the best of times!] but surely there are farm shops with supplies? I wouldn't use blue rolls, preferring newspaper.  Seriously.  Granny never had toilet roll as she couldn't afford that and a newspaper had more uses.  My BinL in Hunstanton hasn't mentioned any particular shortages ........

Today I will be weeding.  Probably shivering as well but needs must.

In north Wales they don't want second home or caravan owners to visit not because they will empty the shops but because if the fall ill the local hospitals won't be able to cope with the numbers.

Apparently snowdonia was packed yesterday, they are saying stay away today  ???

What numbers?   It happens in the Summer of a normal year but the public aren't aware of how many beds are taken up by visitors and how many ops are postponed/cancelled due to the usual influx  ::). How many critical care situations do Wales foresee?  There will be accidents that have to be dealt with immediately across the UK which is why the Government have suddenly found more beds ......... and the private sector are helping out which means those operations will be cancelled.  Whether there will be enough staff to cover the extra beds?

I've nipped inside  ;D can U tell, it is COLD out there.  Another layer required!

We have no idea how many are carrying thousands are carrying the virus. It only takes one person to start and epidemic in a 'clean' area. EVERYONE should be staying at home. It isn't only about hospital beds, many people won't survive it even with medical care.

We are doing mainly local walks.  Usually only come across a few people so no problem.  The worst is the supermarket as even if you try and keep a distance others don't.

I think we need a strictly come dancing backwards if people invade personal space ;-)

So what consists of 'necessary' travel?  What about those whose employers who insist the workforce continues to go to in?

Our village is having a bear hunt: anyone with a cuddly bear puts it in the window and the kids tick off which house.  Same with painted stones.  Lots of ideas on various Facebook sites even if one doesn't join in.  Some are putting books/jigsaws in boxes with lids, well wiped - for others to pick up, use and put in another box around the village.  If any of you have a telephone box that has been decommissioned? it could be utilities.  Church has a ribbon tree in the garden - OK as long as everyone doesn't arrive to hang their prayer ribbon at the same time!

Lots of pubs etc. are offering take away - ring up, put in the order early enough and either collect or it will be delivered.  LOTS of people are buying live chickens  :-\ ..........  :o at this time of year when Mummy fox is busy !!

Maybe a group could do a crossword: pick a daily paper, each do as much as possible then ring the friend with 1 clue to get the answer ........

Chickens take a few weeks to get going though - so will the RSPCA be expected to pick up the pieces when owners get fed up waiting?

It's a question of holiday home owners using up the limited shopping and medical facilities. The idea is to leave them for the locals. Boris said staying at home meant in your primary residence.

These fee issues need to be put on the back burner.  No one could anticipate this crisis and Park owners etc. will need every penny right now to keep the sites afloat?  Better to not ask yet what they decide to do and have a site to return to?  Trouble is, it's over the main Summer period  :'(

I think it's more to do with the strain on local health services.

Also it risks further spread.  That's what happened in Italy when the lock down was due to be extended.  40,000 people in Italy have been fined for not sticking to the rules.  They are not in a good place now.

Having watched question time  tonight it's very obvious if we keep bending the rules this lockdown will last much longer ( it's was suggested 11-12 weeks and radio 4 apparently said could be 6 months) Wuhan is still in lockdown. We have  to have a new mindset going for a non essential drive food or medical appointments etc that's it unless a key worker.

The government have sent out warning shots ( like they did before ) if we don't comply and keep trying to bend the rules they will get tougher and we could end up like other countries where lockdown really is lockdown.

Going for a drive risks an accident, or breakdown both of which are at there maximum capacity regards services, & if everyone goes off for a drive to the countryside then 🤦‍♀️we are being watched & they now have powers to stop you in the car asking where your going & they have drones out for dog walkers who are pushing the boundaries.

I hate it all as much as everyone else & not seeing my granddaughter most days who lives around the corner has had me sobbing today so we just have to do as we are told or have it forced and all freedom taken away and paperwork required to leave and get shopping etc.

My eldest is in lockdown in New Zealand.

Exactly this.

One car journey per week if necessary for essential food shopping.

One hour of exercise a day, only from your own door.

No physical contact with people you're not already living with - except caring responsibilities.

I'm working from home - lucky to have one of those jobs.

Walking to my allotment - allowed as it's just up the road.

Writing a book with my husband, who's a philosopher - Nietzsche.

I am working from home (since end of last week) and have only been out for food. The amount of work I can do at home is limited but we were issued with laptops and additional software to give us remote access.
Really missing my usual exercise. Just walking to the station and later to work gave me 30 minutes brisk walking each day plus I went on frequent weekend walks. Hope to do a local one tomorrow or Sunday.

Have the worry of my elderly and disabled dad. He pays for carers and people to clean his house and enjoys their company. Now the agency has withdrawn the cleaning service completely and reduced the care support. I can't go there anymore because I would need to cross London on public transport. My younger brother lives close and he has had to visit to do some cleaning and clothes washing for him.

Title: Re: What to do during the crisis

At a time when cleaning is essential.  :-\ I would want a written letter from the Company explaining exactly why?  If it's to protect their workers from your Dad well that's taking it to extremes; has he been anywhere?  If it's to protect their workers my response is that they aren't doing a particularly good job over all then! if they are worried about contamination.  What happened to the human aspect?

I will say again:

Use BOILED water with a mix of laundry powder and domestos: wipe all surfaces regularly allow to air dry.  BOIL the clothes used.

Wipe under taps, under Council bin lids, handles and where anyone else may have left the Virus.  It doesn't like boiled launder water.

Metholated spirits will work.  It breaks down the fat on the outside of the Virus, therefore drowning the little blighter .  If gloves are worn and in my opinion these are dangerous as they rarely get washed often enough and will end up in landfill: taking them off correctly is important.  Having worked in clean rooms my DH has been explaining to anyone wearing gloves anywhere  ::) the protocol.  One-use gloves are worse than even Marigolds which can be boiled after use.

Katejo - tell your brother to carry out good cleaning regime, including the car doors/boot handles, steering wheel and gear stick if he drives between places.  Wipe the door handles at your dad's place going in and on the way out - backwards as it is.  Maybe provide your Dad with a bowl of water/laundry powder and a cloth so that he can wipe as he goes along ?  Don't forget the handle of the hoovery-thingy, dustpans, brushes etc..  Also the telephone and door bell where appropriate.

My parent's cleaner is not allowed to come and clean any more and they are not up to doing anything more than the basics. Neither can push a Hoover around. Dad's worrying about paying people money when they do the shopping. The nearest atm is not working, which means a trip. He won't listen to me. He won't do online banking. I keep telling him most people have apps and can photo a cheque. it's so hard for them.

I'm afraid I haven't got the energy to do all this cleaning and disinfecting. I struggle to do normal housework. I have eczema badly on my hands from hand washing and I think from stress. Normally it will only get like this in really cold weather. My energy was used up going to the pharmacy today to get my medication. They were out of stock for 2 items the other day and I still have to go back for one of my asthma meds if they can get it. I got my hrt patches. The pharmacy is 10 miles away, but they are the only pharmacy who can get patches and answer the phone. Unnecessary journey? The nearest pharmacy hasn't got hold of patches for months. Never had a problem with asthma meds before. it's stressful just getting basics. At least it wasn't raining and queuing 2 metres apart outside was strictly observed. DH is getting the shopping, as I'm vulnerable. We do go walking, but avoid my favourite narrow pathways where you can't pass  by people safely.

Can't be bothered going out today, I'm sick to death of walking along suburban pavements! It will have to be exercise DVDs.

Just had a long chat with my sister on the phone. She only lives 5 minutes walk away too! She was saying her husband who's 60 has declared he's not going to retire for a long time having had this taste of life at home lol!
re. your husband: The difference is that, in normal circumstances he would be able to use his time and get involved in activities away from home. i still want to retire in my early 60's but hopefully healthy enough to do things.

I might venture into the attic and sort things out. Bit scared of heights. But my grandson proudly announced that there were no monsters up there when he went up with DH, so I?ll be ok! Decluttering is fun. I've got some old coins to sort out to see if any are of value, including some Belgian ones from the WW1 that my grandpa gave me. No point in keeping things I never look at. Keep me busy doing the research.

Just back from M&S Food, which worked very well.  Short queue and well stocked.  Am boycotting Waitrose as takes ages to get in and you have to clean your own trolley.  Miserable security guard at the door and stock, although improved, still not brilliant.

I won't go in Waitrose again unless things improve. They were letting all and sundry in and social distancing inside was impossible. I prefer the one in one out policy operating in M&S.

Our stores are shutting earlier to replenish shelves in the evenings/overnight which was what the Plans were passed on anyway - that all restocking had to be done overnight  :-\

Also some stores aren't getting 'variants' back, i.e. 5 types of sausage rather than 17  :o

Stellajane - I know how you feel. Yesterday was the first day I felt truly fed up with it all and started to miss my usual activities.

Even going for a walk is tiresome if everywhere is deserted and the necessary shopping trips are becoming tedious and extra dull.  If this continues I will have to turn to drink lol!

Take care ladies.

He is having to grow lots more from seed at the moment, for obvious reason.  The result is that the house is slowly turning into a greenhouse.  Enough is enough though and he has to buy something to put them in outside.

I thought we had it cracked, of the 3 that don't like their second lamb that's the only one that stands quietly while it feeds (while I'm supervising). So I thought I'd try leaving it with mum. Get cash in a box under the bed?

Coronavirus will hasten the decline in the use of cash as people make a long-term switch to digital payments, experts say.

The lockdown has led to a 60% fall in the number of withdrawals from cash machines, although people are taking out bigger sums.

Payment card use has risen with online shopping, particularly for groceries.

Experts say the long-term future of cash could be at risk, before the UK is ready to cope with the change.

This could leave behind an estimated 20% of the population who rely on cash, they say.

My 95 year old dad is going out early on Saturday to get cash, when no one is about. Not happy unless he can pay by cash. He won't bank online. The only other time he goes out is to the surgery twice a week to have the dressing on his head changed. All the staff know him now and call him by his Christian name, even the receptionists. They seem to have got very fond of him. He drives himself.

According to Robert Jenrick Stay alert means stay at  home so why change it !!!

Boris is only going to be on for ten minutes tonight so I can't see any big changes and most of it seems to have been leaked already if it wasn't so serious it would be funny.

So locals can return to work if they can drive or cycle ......... so it will be watching to see where the spikes are likely to be.

But at least we can go out all day if we want  :ola:

I don't see how you can be out safely all day and social distance quite honestly. Maybe in very sparsely populated areas but in a town or city? Before the lockdown it was like playing dodgem cars round here, weaving in and out. Are we all to have hands in pockets and not touch any surfaces, faces etc all day? If I sit down on a bench how do I know someone's not just coughed or spat on it? People spit in the street a lot here.? Maybe I'm being over cautious but if your children's lives might be at stake.. At any rate I'm in another 5 weeks at least and I think there'll be another wave by then.
I agree Teresa- I think I?ll carry my little camping chair out with me, definitely not chancing sitting on a bench.
I'm hoping to carry on as I am until September, unfortunately the college I work for will probably have a different idea.

I'm a more in the moment person anyway - planning things makes me feel anxious as I overthink all the things that can go wrong  ;D
So, for the time being I'm just making the most of slouching about at home, doing work as I need to and watching box sets.

A family has been dressing up in creative ways and using props to put together a unique online photo album.

The Skinner family, from Rushden, Northamptonshire, created the first picture as the "kids were a bit bored" during the coronavirus lockdown.

Each image sees their children choose a specific colour which they will all dress up in.

This family has been so inventive !  :-*

Bicester Village re-opens: however:

More than three thousand people have signed a petition calling for Bicester Village to temporarily close after hundreds of people were pictured at the shopping complex.

Pictures on social media appear to show people struggling to maintain social distancing at the designer retail outlet in Bicester, Oxfordshire.

The petition is calling for it to be closed until changes are made.

Value Retail, which runs the complex, has been contacted for comment.

All shops in England are now allowed to open, but with strict safety measures.

Laura Wicks, who launched the petition, wrote she was "disgusted to see hundreds of people squashed into the street like Coronavirus never happened" and called for the complex to keep their staff safe.

Re-open UK airports  :-\

London City Airport has reopened to the public after it was closed for nearly three months because of Covid-19.

Commercial and private flights stopped operating on 25 March due to travel restrictions and a collapse in demand.

Government agencies and the military have been using the east London airport instead.

On Sunday, the first commercial flight to restart the airport was from the Isle of Man, which landed at about 18:00 BST.

Initially flights will be restricted to those within the UK and Ireland
.

I read this on the Isle of Man news not anywhere on the mainland.

Because they need the trade.  I think that many of those visiting UK hot spots probably go abroad .......... but there is NO excuse for the amount of rubbish left behind  :bang: :bang: :bang:  I think that the worst most will catch is sun burn!

When we walk the beaches late at night after the tourists have gone, we find all kinds of expensive stuff: brollies, sun shields, small plastic spades, buckets, rakes : when we began our Summer we would have a kit each and that was it: plus flags to stick in the sand castles, anyone remember those?  We each had a bag so it was each child's responsibility from the age of 5 to pick up our own items and the elder children had to make sure that the youngest had their bags filled.  There were 2 of us of similar age: then my sister 6 years younger; followed by another girl 18 months younger and a boy 18 months younger than her. So a bit spread out and if we added cousins as well as the family of 8 'from the corner'  ;D.  We never lost anything as we knew we wouldn't be given a 2nd set and would not be allowed to share with the others.

I still wouldn't be going to a beach yet.

Ridiculous isn't it? Too dangerous to send your kids to school or go to work but perfectly safe to join thousands of people on a protest or cram onto a beach. Perhaps it's time to stop the support. If they had to go to work they wouldn't have so much time to behave like d*cks.

:'( - those concerned should be chained together and made to rebuild every brick etc.. and their parents should also be changed and made to rebuild every corner stone and window - GradeII - will take years to get clearance for a re-build  :'(

A car smashed through the front of a pub hours before it was due to open for the first time in nearly four months.

The owners of the Swan Inn near Ashford in Kent were woken by a "terrible bang" at about 02:00 BST as a Land Rover crashed into the grade-II building.

Landlord Ray Perkins said he was "distraught," adding: "We just don't know why we had such bad luck".

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and taking a vehicle without consent.

The teenager and two other 17 year olds were treated at hospital for minor injuries before being discharged, Kent Police said.

Mr Perkins said: "We spent weeks getting the pub ready to open today and eight hours before we are due to open, this happens. How much bad luck can we have?"
