CLKD gave me the idea. I'm a spender but recently been thinking that I should cut back as retirement is getting nearer.
-
I'm a bit of both, like to know there's enough money before I spend it all ;D
-
:thankyou:
I love saving. My sister - money slips through her fingers ::)
It gives me a sense of achievement ;). As a married couple we have been in the lovely position of never not being able to afford anything.
-
I'm a bit of both really...
I do like a spend up, but I like bargains too..
-
Oh I like a bargain too. I know someone who ‘makes do' with everything and hardly spends a bean.
-
How does that work, one has to buy needles and thread :D
-
If I want something I will research the price and wait for an offer, I love outlet villages but not at this time of year ::)
I like to know there is money in the bank, you never know what's around the corner.
-
I don't buy for the sake of it because I don't want to get more cluttered up. I used to be a big kitchen gadget fan but never used most of it so now I stand there asking myself if I really need it after 42 years of marriage and cooking. The answer is always no.
I do like quality though and always buy the best shoes and boots I can afford and I would rather buy quality clothes in charity shops than cheap stuff in places like Primark.
Very occasionally I go shopping with a friend and she spends a small fortune on absolute rubbish. She never has any money left at the end of the month. She tells me she has no savings but she has no children or grandchildren and her partner has a skilled well paid job. She has retired now and gets a works pension on top of her state pension but never has any money left.
-
PF - what's 'rubbish' exactly? We have stuff which Mum calls clutter but it's all got a value.
-
I'm a saver. Always have been. To the frustration of my friends. I just dont soend and I'm not materialistic, so I don't feel like I'm. Issing out.
Examples ... my saucepans came from my grandad's house, when he passed away. I don't know how long he had them, but he passed 21 years ago.
I have a hand me down washing machine from my parents. I've had it at least 12 years, they had it for at least 15 before that. She leaks and doesn't always spin. Other than that, she's great !! A bit like myself ;)
-
My Dad used to say 'There is no pockets in shrouds'.
I like to spend but within our means. Particularly holidays and experiences. We don't know what is round the corner so enjoy it while you can :)
-
My Mum used to say that, and also 'You can't take it with you'. She saved all her life though, and was a careful spender, but had enough for her old age and liked to enjoy some of the good things while she was still able to.

All my spending is within my means. About to have a new bathroom but have saved it all first. My cc is paid in full every month. I wish I could persuade myself to spend a bit more on holidays than I do but I get this feeling that I am spoiling myself...

No, go for it. When we get to old to travel at least we will have happy memories. I'd rather have that than stuff. Books being the exception. ;D

cheap shoes and sandals that either fall apart or she can't walk in. Tacky ornaments. cheap towels that get plucked and threadbare in weeks. Junk makeup that doesn't do the job she wants.
She ends up binning most of it. it's her money so it's up to her.

Do it why you still can. There might come a day when you are too frail to go on holiday.

Go for it Girls! If that bus creeps up behind tomorrow :o
Go for it Girls! I can't due to crippling anxiety the moment I think about booking tickets to the Italian Lakes :'(
AH PF - that's it. A bargain that ain't in all probability?
Reminds me: when I was about 6 I had crazed my Mum for a pair of sandals. It was black lace-ups otherwise and a small pair of pink/silver party slippers. So off we goes to the shop and I picked a pair of white. With straps. Which broke within hours :'( so back we went. I can't remember what happened ........... :-\
-
I need to re-energise the looking after elderly thread :-\
-
I'm not hanging around to go into a care home.
-
No, I don't fancy that either.
-
Maybe one day, we'll have no choice in the matter! 🤷♀️
-
Maybe we'll all be in there together ;D
-
;D how will we recognise each other :P
What other choice will you have? Unless we live in a very cold environment .......... and as I don't fly, I can't even save for a one-way ticket to an ice-floe ::)
Have spent a tenner on sweeties for Mum for her C.mas gift from a cousin. No room for any more pot plants in her room :o. I have a nice tin and they all fit in it. Nice bow and label, job done.
We tend to spend well on day's out or holidays away. We can save when we take the camper van as pitches are from a tenner to about 25 per night. DH bought a Lottery ticket today, watch this space ;D
-
I'm not hanging around to go into a care home.
I think you all missed my meaning. My 'not hanging around' I meant that unless I'm totally incapacitated, I will choose when I pass. My sister and I both made this decision after watching our parents struggle.
-
I didn't miss it. I will probably spend my money on a care home and be a bit of a bothersome biddy ;D

Ahh I see. It will probably be a lot easier further down the line than it is now.

Hello ladies
Shadyglade - I understand your meaning and agree with you. When my SIL was terminally ill she was hoarding drugs but events overtook her and she died in hospital. She was fifty six.
Wishing everyone well.

My NYs resolution- save more money.
-
As a slight meander: when I want bird food, shoes, books - I buy. When we want something larger: i.e. washing machine, DH research it to the Nth degree >:( .......... we were 6 years looking B4 we bought the camper van ;D
-
My NYs resolution- save more money.
Mine is have fun. Life is too short and getting shorter. ;)
-
Bit of both, go through phases but never big, unnecessary splurges!! x
-
When the children were small I was a saver if hadn't been we wouldn't have had a holiday or been able to afford Christmas plus I had an emergency fund for any unexpected emergencies like big car repair bills etc.
But over the years that got lost along the way but have recently started started trying to save something for retirement.
I dread to think how much money we spend on holidays over the course of the year but we can afford it
and we get time to spend on our own ( well most holidays ha ha) just relaxing and doing what we want to do when we want to do it without all the time restraints of home i.e. work, grandchildren, parents etc
DH said it's a trail run for retirement 😂
Lanzalover x
-
Yeah, good on you Lanza,if you can afford it,life is for living and you must enjoy holidays etc
I struggled for years as a single mum, only lived by my means, nothing on credit cards as I knew how dangerous that can be but now?well, life is good and we can afford nice holidays and our lodge etc but I still calculate everything in Tesco to the last penny 😂
-
B4 retirement DH kept a spread sheet ::) 4 two years to see what we spent. Then he worked out what savings we have and the Financial Advisor agreed - so we have good savings, our Shares have done well over the last 15 years and at the time of retirement:
1 27 year old female friend with a baby of 3 months died from a brain tumour
A male friend dropped dead aged 36
A male friend of 65 got senile dementia
Another had a serious road accident and is paralysed from the neck down :'(
So we went for it! I live half a day at a time and try not to look too far ahead. Mum has savings which she is using for her care home. Once her property sells we will invest that on her behalf ........ we have enough behind us for private surgery if push comes to shove. Otherwise we buy what we like as most of it is saleable.

Oh I totally agree. I'm just going to cut down on things I actually don't need.
-
Yep,enjoy every day like it's your last,we spend too much on our holiday but we both love it so so much, that's our extravagance for the year
-
Same here holidays are our big expenditure, but we love going :)
-
Yeah and why not,we've another two booked too ;D
-
'too much' is true if one has to go without necessities ;)
-
I'm vowing to stop spending on things I don't need. Ie...clothes, shoes ect..
My wardrobes are full to the brim already and I don't need half the stuff let alone wear them.
-
Definitely a saver. I hate shopping which makes it so much easier ;D so I tend to buy only what I actually need. My definition of need may be a bit different though as it includes a horse and a dog 🐎 :scottie:
I love travelling rather than luxury hotels so usually go somewhere I haven't been before, use cheap accomodation and spend the money on car hire and experiences. £12 to take the train from Cairo to Aswan, 800km. Wouldn't get far in the UK for that!
-
I have to go the shops, get what I require then leave B4 anxiety sets in :-\ so shoe shopping is fraught ::)
-
Hadn't realised how bigger the dog is than horse ;D Looks as though it's going to eat it.

This is my problem, however there's no one I want to leave any money to (all planned to go to charities) so why shouldn't we enjoy a few treats along the way. As the saying does "you can't take it with you". If we need care we can sell the house and it should cover a few years, then we'll probably be too out of it to care.
-
That's one way of looking at it Getting- Old....😆
We should set up a swap shop...😉
-
But jill,I wouldn't want your tweed skirt and brogues :D ;D
-
You can leave it to me 'Getting Old' ... I would give it a very good home ;D
Swapsies sounds like a great idea. I like a tweed skirt me. :P
-
Mine wouldn't be worth much, thread bare and worn out ........ clothes not much better ;D
