Hi everyone, I've had to stop HRT because of various side effects to Estrodrial. I'm 5.5 weeks on now in my journey and just wanted to give everyone an update on my current menopause symptoms.
Over the last few weeks most of my side effects have diminshed, ie: acid reflux, palpitations, aura migranes and hot flushes. My hair has stopped shedding too, I did have a couple of anxious moments along the way but they seem to have settled. It took the full 5+ weeks though for them to get better.
I still have VA, which I know I will have for life, for that I'm taking Vagifem daily and Yes products. At the moment these seem to be keeping it at bay. :) I'm booked in to see the menopause specialist to see if there are any other additions that may help the VA symptons. No idea how long that will take!
I have found taking up daily Yoga extremely useful over the last few weeks.

This along side my magnesium spray for the dreaded palps (what a brilliant product). :)
I would just like to say, there is hope after stopping HRT, it's not for everyone and there are other products/alternative therapies out there that may help you. I struggled on for 1 1/2 years thinking it was the progesterone component of my HRT that was to blame for my symptons when in fact it was the Estrogen.
So good luck to anyone thinking of or attempting to leave HRT regime. It is a ma~oossive step but it is a conquerable one. Stay positive! ❤

Hey Tracey, it's great to hear that things are getting better for you. I was thinking about some of your previous posts and now I see this. As you might remember, I am on my second trial of HRT, started in July and altho I feel calmer, no hot flushes, I started shedding so much hair that it is starting to distress me, I also have a few side effects I could live without. So like you, I am thinking of stopping taking it altogether again.
-
Good luck Tracey E - I stopped cold turkey for varying amounts of time and seemed to be fine up until the 2/3 week mark when mood dipped drastically and I got palps. Didn't have day sweats or flushes but a few night sweats. I'm down to a 25 patch and happy on this but may reduce further soon. My body just seems to be intolerant to higher doses of oestrogen and that's only happened recently, so I wonder if there's a point, post meno, when your body just doesn't want the same level of hormones. Never thought I'd be here as I used to love my oestrogen but we must listen to what our body is telling us.
Please keep posting with your findings, I'm interested to know how it's going.

Hi, it's a serious decision to contemplate but I felt worse on it than off it. :( I was fine in the beginning taking Estrogel and then things gradually got worse. :( Whatever your decision I really hope there's some light at the end of the tunnel because it can be a long journey.. X

Hi Kilted, maybe there us a point of no return for some. I'll keep you posted on what the memo clinic advise. Maybe it's a common symptom of HRT or maybe as the doctor says 'You're a complex case'. Take care. X

Thanks, I know it is, I didn't take the decision of going on HRT lightly either, I was quite against it to begin with. But things got so unbearable last year, I gave it a try and it got better in some ways, but worse in others and that wasn't a trade off I was happy with so I stopped and things went downhill again not long after.
I am not that hopeful things will get better with HRT. I have a phone appt tomorrow with the GP who has special interest in menopause at my surgery, I emailed her and she said she'd ring me at lunchtime. We'll see what she has to say. She said before that I didn't have progesterone intolerance - she has not met me in person, so I don't know how she would know that, but I felt awful whilst on utro and not long after my last pill I started feeling like a heavy weight had lifted. I have more energy, but I have other problems other than hair loss, like slightly raised BP, GERD, constant spotting and I am only on 1 pump Oestrogel too. So hmm. Maybe I am just not meant to have hrt at all. Who knows. We'll see what she suggests.
I hope you keep feeling better! :)

I had GERD whilst on HRT, originally thought like everyone else it must be the Utrogestan, until I realised I still had it after only taking Estrogel alone for 3 weeks. Utro made me have the worse PMT symptons ever, worse than when I was ovulating. When your bad days outnumber your good it's time to rethink. You could always request an appointment with the meno clinic Coldlittleheart. :)
-
TraceyE - very positive. If side effects have diminished after 5 weeks I'd say you'll be ok. Its when they keep getting worse as the weeks go by its not such a good outcome!
Hi Stella, I hope so although I don't want to count all my chickens yet. It's a weird one but I had more hot flushes on HRT than off it. I don't understand it at all, maybe the memo clinic will shed some light on it. :)
-
Tracey E - I get sweats when trying to increase hrt, both oestrogen and prog. I think it's quite common, and really confusing!
-
Utrogestan makes me very hot for the first 5 days of taking it, especially at night. Its a different heat from hot flushes though - more a boiling up but without the sweating!
The joys of hormones ;D
I've just pretty much paraphrased that in another post! I think ladies need to be aware that utro does this and not blame it on low E. It's more like a heat from a fever than a flush though.

I had a good conversation with the doctor today, as I have a hard time tolerating most medications, I am a little tricky to treat. The utrogestan made me so tired I could barely get out of bed most days, when I stopped it to induce a bleed, it took no time for some energy to come back. So it seemed clear that I am sensitive to that. I explained that what made me decide to contact her was that I am seeing more scalp and this shedding business has worsened in the past couple days, yesterday, I ran my fingers through my hair and 30 hairs - I counted them - came out :/ That was it. I messaged her and she gave me a phone appointment today. She suggested that I stop HRT for now and see how that goes. She mentioned tibolone but I am not that keen on trying that, it seems to have a fair few side effects. She said she could refer me to the menopause clinic, but as I have intolerances to a lot of medications, she wasn't sure that they would be able to help, although they might have some ideas. She was very positive ad sympathetic though and said that maybe my symptoms wouldn't come back as bad or even at all, which I doubt but that would be nice, and that this won't last forever. I am just dreading the crazy feelings I had before, it is a tricky one!
-
Hi Coldlittleheart, it might be worth attending the menopause clinic, as you know I'm waiting for another appointment. I guess some of us are more sensitive than others to HRT and I'm hoping they may have a trick or two left up their sleeve. Stay in touch as we appear to be in the same boat... X

Coldlittleheart - 1 pump oestrogel is a low dose. I'm so sorry, I can't find your info as I'm using my phone, how old are you and where in meno? Have you had a full set of bloods recently including sex hormones, thyroid, ferritin, b vits? These all affect hair growth and mood/energy.

Hi KiltedCupid
I'm 57 so about 5 years in, thing is, I had problems with hair loss for several years, but stabilised it about 2 yers ago. My ferritin was very low and I managed to bring it back up. My last blood tests were fine for thyroid, ferritin, D and B vitamins (there were other things that my GP checked I forget what they were). All was fine. They didn't do my sex hormone profile because NICE guidelines say not to. I realise that one pump is a very low dose but my hair wasn't falling out until I started HRT last year, so as it made me more anxious and depressed I stopped it after a few months. Not long after, the shedding stopped and I saw new growth. Then I put up with my low moods and anxiety and other symptoms up until this past July where I couldn't cope anymore, so I was put back on HRT and my hair started shedding again not long after. Also utro was making me really tired so I discussed with GP and decided to try to go on a cycle. After I stopped utro to induce a bleed, the fatigue lifted, but then the shedding got much worse. I spoke with my GP yesterday and she suggested that I stop the HRT for now and see what happens. We both agreed that it seemed unlikely to be a coincidence that both time I tried HRT, my hair started shedding loads and she thought that maybe my body doesn't like the extra hormones. Also hair loss is one of the side effects of Oestrogel.

I will stay in touch, I'll see how I get on without the HRT and see if I still need the menopause clinic. I know it can take awhile for an appointment. I'll keep you posted and please keep me posted too. Feel free to pm me :)

Stellajane, it did get better last year after I stopped my short stint on HRT (first one was kliovance with norethisterone, then I changed to femoston but that didn't control any of my symptoms and the shedding carried on). It got better, then it got bad again when I started estrogel and utro, but got even worse without utro. I know what you mean about the stresses, but it just seemed too coincidental that both times I tried HRT, the shedding went crazy, but then they also say that HRT does stress our bodies too as it causes hormonal changes. We'll see how it goes in a few weeks time.
-
Coldlittleheart - if you're blood tests are adequate I still think you should push for sex hormone tests as it's likely your oestrogen is low. I've previously shed hair on both norethisterone and oestrogel but in the gel case, it was probably non absorption. Have you tried a patch? Non absorption or even low absorption of E would have an effect on hair and I imagine cycles might too as you're adding and withdrawing progesterone and so causing fluctuations. Have you used a conti method without hair loss? Conti is much more stable and I've found in the past that I shed more when stopping prog on a cycle.
I'm the same age as you and have defo lost some hair from the top and front of my head, it's not noticeable but I notice it and I shed a lot but I'm on a low dose so I imagine that's part of being late 50's and well post meno. Do you take biotin and and B vit supplement? I've been doing that for a while and I think it helps a bit.

Thing is I was not losing much at all off HRT only started really shedding after I started HRT. I only did two very short stints of HRT. As I said the first was last year, with kliovance which is norethisterone, then switched to femoston which is meant to be more hair friendly as it's got Dydrogesterone. The femoston didn't do anything for my symptoms but my hair kept on shedding. So I stopped. Both were conti. I can't do patches because I have an allergy to the adhesives. Then since last july I have started off with progynova 2mg plus utro daily, then my GP changed the progynova to oestrogel but I stayed on utro daily. That really didn't work too well for me, the progesterone made me really tired. That's why I went on a cycle, I was wiped out and felt like crap with utro. My hair started shedding about a month and a half this time around but more once I stopped utro. Why would my hair shed like mad if I am not absorbing but it didn't shed when I wasn't on HRT? I don't understand. Plus I must be absorbing because my anxiety went down, my hot flushes went away, no more night sweats. so I was getting some estrogen in my system.

I do eat nutritional yeast every day which is full of all B vitamins. Thing is in my case it started in my 50s, but I had very very low ferritin, and that with perimenopause, my hair thinned. But I had managed to get my ferritin levels up and the shedding stopped, I saw a lot of new growth. The shedding this time has been really worrying, nothing like I experienced before. I wouldn't be surprised if it stops soon.

Just thought I'd give an update 6 weeks after stopping HRT. My morning achey feet, legs and fingers have gone since I came off HRT. :) Acid reflux and palpitations appear to have now disappeared. Eyebrows are now growing back and hair has definitely stopped shedding. Aura migranes now gone. Hot Flushes still around one a night which is bearable.
I was very similar to coldlittleheart in the fact that my iron levels were fine, as was thyroid function. I was absorbing my Estrogen too. Doctors could find no other causes for my issues other than HRT specifically Estrodrial.
I'm hoping my post will give some hope to folk that are considering coming off HRT. I spent the good part of 18 months changing from one progesterone to another when in fact the culprit was Estrodrial. I realise that is a hard fact to swallow as Estrogen seems to be the answer to all of our woes. For me it was not it was just the beginning...
-
Thank you for the update Tracey. Brilliant news that you are still seeing improvements. Xx

Hi Tracey, I came off HRT cold turkey 8 weeks ago and feel much better apart from VA that kicked in really quickly but I'm taking Vagifem for it and that seems to be helping. Early days for me and I would consider it again if needed. I was on it for 15 months and it did help with the insomnia and hot flushes. I'm guessing that the hormonal fluctuations have abated and the HRT did the job when needed but no need now. The VA has been a horrible shock though as I had no idea that menopause could cause that. I will watch your story with interest.

Great to hear thatnyou're still feeling better. I'll be following your updates! :D

Hi Honey, I'm on Vagifem daily at the moment for VA it seems to be doing the trick (touch wood). How are your hot flushes now ? I'm hardly getting any flushes 6 wks off HRT. :)
-
I have maybe one or two very very mild flushes a day Tracey. Really just feeling a bit hot, nothing like the flushes I had earlier in the menopause really. Also my legs feel better, no more crampy feeling and no more silent aura migraines. The VA has been a shocker though but it is ok on the vagifem. I'm a bit reluctant to feel out of the woods yet though. Are we ever out of the woods!

I was having aura migranes too. :( I hope we can get out of the woods at some point Joney or at least see a glimpse of daylight..

From the varying posts on this thread, it really does seem that some ladies are better without hrt. I know from my own experience with feeling unwell on higher doses that I'm personally better with low dose, possibly even ultra low dose. This is a really useful thread for those ladies who are confused about feeling worse on hrt but might be a afraid to reduce/stop. I certainly felt afraid to do so but am glad I persevered. It's important, particularly when gp's are giving uninformed or unsuitable advice that we have these discussions allowing women to consider all their options.

Hi,
New to posting anything on the forum. I went on Everol Conti last July for low moods, energy levels and brain fog. Felt really good on it for a while. Then started suffering from really tender breasts, dry brittle hair which was shedding more as well as a really itchy scalp. Asked to switch to another patch but due to shortage was put on low dose of Femoston Conti pills in Oct and then switched to higher dose. Since being on the Femoston I have suffered really badly with anxiety and insomnia to the point I am on sleeping tablets at the moment. Never had this problem before. Body feels all over the place. I have decided to come off HRT all together. Please tell me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!! Dr has suggested ADs which I am loath to take but in the middle of a house move so wondering whether to give them a try if they help with sleep.
-
I have just stopped HRT as of today. I started it in October 2017. I've tried various formulas from patches to tablets and gel. I was so upset when my hairdresser showed me my scalp last week where my hair loss is visible in gaps. I don't know whether it is the testosterone therapy I have been on for 6 months which can cause male pattern hair loss or the Provera which lists hair loss as a common side effect affecting 1 in 10 women. I have been under the care of an NHS menopause consultant who has been very good. I did ask her about hair loss with Provera and she said this is not the case. I am not so sure as something is causing my hair loss. My brushes get full every week.
I decided I can't be in any worse situation by stopping. I did check my menopause books by Kathy Abernethy and the guidance in that about stopping. It does say symptoms can reoccur but I think I would rather put up with hot sweats and brain fog than have bald patches. I did try Nordic hair volume gummies but all they did was make my fine hair even softer and less manageable. If anyone has any advice in hair loss I would be very grateful. I am seeing my own Dr on Tuesday. I am waiting for NHS consultant to respond to my message. It is really distressing to be in this situation. Please can anyone advise. Thank you.
-
I am coming up 5 months off hrt. I also had excessive hair loss on hrt, the last one of which was premarin and provera. Now off my hair is growing back. Even at a month off i could see lots of new growth as could my hairdresser. I also feel much much better off hrt. For me it caused anxiety, worsening depression and frequent migraine with aura. Cant believe i stayed on hrt 4 years feeling like death. I tried every preparation available too. X
-
Thank you so much for your replies. I did have my thyroid checked recently and tests came back ok. I also give blood 3 times a year so I think any issues like that would show up.
Alua thank you so much for your reassurance that your hair started to grow back after 1 month off Provera. That gives me hope. Did you use any special products for hair loss.
Best wishes.
-
I always had a good crop of hair but on hrt i think inprobably lost half a head of hair. Ibused no products at all. The hrt was like poison for me in the end.
-
Thank you again for your advice.

Hi I know this post is really old so not expecting ans answer but I've just stopped cold turkey as I have never felt so ill on hrt. Since stopping f I feel a lot better in myself but have development awful acid reflux. I'm taking omeprazole for but was wondering how long you had been on hrt and how long it took before feeling better! Many thanks
-
Hi

-

I'm taking omeprazole for but was wondering how long you had been on hrt and how long it took before feeling better! Many thanks
I've developed acid reflux or LPR while on bhrt, now needing to taper down as cold turkey will sent me over the bridge. Also have ibs and gallstones. A remedy for acid reflux is to take HC Betaine with pepsin with meals see Youtube The SAHD Life - How to Treat Acid Reflux (GERD) for Good! this guy is full of tips and information. Unlike popular belief it is probable you have low acid and ppis will exacerbate. He has a test in his video to see if you do. As for the rest i'm suffering tremendously and regret starting this hrt that never gave me any positives except some vertigo seems better. HOw to taper now and avoid more damaged of ibs, acid reflux and gallstones. best wishes

I’m five months cold turkey and five months since any bleeding. I wasn’t feeling good on HRT and didn’t know where I was naturally- my withdrawal bleeds were hit and miss for a few months before. I’ve felt great and more like myself. Less anxious, less dizzy, less palpitations etc etc. Motivated enough to lose a couple of stone. Tip-top form.
Until this morning, when I’ve suddenly started bleeding and I feel absolutely meh
I should have known it was too good to last….. :-\
