How warm would you like it to be on holiday?  Surely the travel brochures will give advice on temps. during the year, or hop over to a 'Slavenia' travel site so get an idea?

ApparentlY Croatia is lovely too.

i have been to both Slovenia and Croatia (2002 and 2003) and i am considering a return to Croatia this year combined with Montenegro https://www.explore.co.uk/holidays/walking-montenegro-and-the-croatian-islands
Both previous trips rank in my top 10 of recent holidays.

Had a really good time but due to having DGD with us didn't really have time to visit the forum  ;D

First couple of days were beautiful approx 22/23 degrees the next couple were warm but we had a few showers each day, last day warm and very pleasant. Pity we were only there for five nights  cann't wait for retirement when we will be able to stay all winter 😎

Well yes but 43 years ago!!! Stayed in a youth hostel! I love cultural city breaks so I am sure you'll have a great time. Have a look at Tripadvisor as there are always reviews of things to do. Also get one of those DK little mini-guides with fold out map? either the Top Ten or the Eye Witness guides. I always find them handy for places like that...

Enjoy Suffolk Shadyglade.

Littleminne we are going to Playa Blanca we have been going here for over 25 years and have seen a lot of changes in the resort over the years.
When we went in January we went to Matagorda for change a really enjoyed the holiday DH said we may go back there later in the year.

Sadly Cape Town will be having their water supplies switched off in 10 weeks.   3 years of drought have depleted the dams in the locality.  Wonder how Hospitals will fare?  Also the tourist industry  :-\

Lanzalover - we used to go to Costa Teguise but it became like a ghost town.

Sounds lovely I would be interested to hear how you get on as DH and I were thinking of doing a road trip in America next year when doing al little research there was a coach trip which took in most of the places we had on our list of places we would like to visit. But we are just a little unsure.

Lucky you Lanzalover!!! I did mention my hol previously but don't expect people to read back over everything - we're going to Spain near the French border. I just get excited as it is usually the only time we go abroad for a holiday - around Easter time, although I tend to have a weekend away on the continent later in the year also! I can imagine you will be looking forward to the sun :)

Some people do trips across the US by hiring an RV - recreational vehicle that is LARGE motor home.  Or they get the Greyhound between motels.  Or a mix.
Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: Lanzalover on February 26, 2018, 07:02:47 PM
Yes I am Hurdity cann't wait for some sun it is bitterly cold here at the moment. It strange how we get excited at the prospect of holiday but it's nice to have something to look forward to.

Thanks CLKD we were going to hire a car and go on our own little road trip the advantage with this option is if we rock up somewhere we like we can stay as long as we want or just move on.
But a coach tour has the advantage in that things like accommodation are already sorted for you and someone else has to do the driving. I will have to do a little more research.

Only 5 more sleeps now yipeeeee

Yes got away with a one hour delay but boy there was a lot of turbulence from France nearly all the way to Lanzarote seat belt sign was on nearly all of the flight. And DH was starting to look a little green but he wasn't the only one.
Son,partner and DGD not so lucky although they were on one of the few flights out of Bristol but they had to first fly up to Manchester to get on a flight from there going to Tenerife with mainly cruise passengers who were picking up the ship in Tenerife they eventually arrived 12 hours later than expected but sem to be having a good time now they are finally there.

Hope you're having a great time! I absolutely HATE turbulence (and flying also) and always grip my husband's arm tightly whever it happens. We normally don't fly at very turbulent times of year nor long haul but I still get v nervous!

Hey CLKD - if it's not a hol or pleasure trip away, then how about on another thread to let us know how you're doing?!!! Maybe start an "away from the forum" thread or something for people that want to announce their comings and goings!! :)

Just had a lovely Easter weekend in Amsterdam the weather was so kind to us,piddled down when on the coach then lovely and bright when doing our walking tours.loved the train station in Amsterdam had great shops and restaurants, the whole place was absolutely heaving with tourists.went to the cheese and clog tours and did canal cruise and then diamond factory tour but best was kaukenhof the bulb displays were just beautiful had nice restaurants and plenty going on outside, great play areas and petting farm for kiddies,we were exhausted as crammed so much in but was worth it,on the way home we stoped at a Belgium chocolate factory, very naughty but nice lol.

As an aside you cannot buy hrt otc according to the pharmacist I spoke to,she said no hrt of any kind without a prescription.I didn't need anything but thought I'd ask as the chemist was right there in train station.
Sorry your visits are so heavy on your heart but that's good your making plans we all need to be able to do that xx

Any plans for 2018 (other than going to our caravan) are on hold .... because it looks like we are going to Disneyworld in 2019!!!  It's my 50th birthday in August, but we've left it too late to decide to go this year - so next year it is!  I'm sooooo excited - we both LOVE Disneyland Paris, and I've always wanted to go to Disneyworld but hubby wasn't so keen .... but he's relented and said we can go  :D :D  Looking out of the window and yet another cold, wet, grey day, I'm really looking forward to that Florida sunshine, even if I do have to wait 17 months for it!!

How exciting Scampi, you will love it.  There is no comparison between Paris and Florida.  The Florida one is much much better.  Universal is just as good as Disney.

Daisydot, I'm so pleased you see ejoyed Keukenhof I've been lucky enough to visit three times and it never disappoints, the colours are fabulous.  I follow them on Facebook so I saw the planting that had to be done for just a few weeks a year when the park is open  :o

Ty two hoots it was a privelage to be there the flowers were astounding considering the challenges they must have with the bad weather, the facilities there were great we saw them smoking herring fillets in big barrels in grotty weather outside and cheese demonstrations the poor staff were soaking wet but so good humoured it really was lovely.the wedding displays were amazing in the orangery,I would so recommend it for a visit it wasn't anything like I expected it reminded me of a theme park it was lovely.xx

Hi dulciana

Im hoping to go to Rome later in the year with my friend as we have both had our 60th birthday recently. So I would love to hear how you got on together with any hints or tips you may have.
Do let us know how you get on and have a lovely holiday.

Still waiting for my possible holiday next month to month to be authorised going to kick some ass today when I get into work or at least try 😉

Lanzalover x

Just back from Rome yesterday.  Absolutely fabulous place, steeped in ancient history and the church.  Take really good walking shoes with you, as public transport is not what it should be and you have to do lots of walking, over large distances.
I don't think I'd advise visiting at this time of year - it was crowded and we were always concerned about carrying any money on us.   I'd love to go there again in something like October or February.

I went to Rome 25 years ago and it was fab,we saw pope John Paul on the balcony and got blessed in the square it was a fabulous place to visit so much history as you say but god the feeling of intimidation by the pickpockets was awful you needed eyes everywhere,The style and dress of the city people was fab too so classy looking in every age group,I know over the years there's probably been massive changes but it's so worth going to.theres a lady at the coliseum and she gets a grant from the government to feed and look after the feral cats there as it keeps the rats under control it was lovely chatting to her,I'm cats mad as youll guess lol,yes as dulciana says definately go and like all the big cities now just be security concious.xx

How did I feel while I was away, CLKD?  Well, footsore and exhausted  ::) - Hubby's style is to race around on foot absolutely everywhere, which is fine but he's tall and I'm not, so I had to take three steps for his every two (or two-against-three, in musical speak! :))!!  That said, all that walking did wonders for my anxiety, kept the symptoms at bay, helped me to sleep better and enabled me to see a couple of changes that I need to make in my life.   Thanks for asking.

And yes, the Italians have style in bucketloads!

Lucky you, Daisydot.   :)  We got ourselves tickets for the Sunday morning Mass with Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square.  Well....we set off for the metro after breakfast in plenty of time.  We had to change trains after one stop so we got off and went down the escalator towards the platform for our connection. At the bottom of the escalator, however, there was what I could only describe as a seething mass of people who we very nearly crashed into as we tried to step off the escalator.  This crowd continued right over to the edge of the platform where our connection to St. Peter's was leaving from.  I knew at that point that, with all my recent anxiety, there was no way at all that I could cope with this crowd and that the only thing to do was to cancel our planned visit to St. Peter's Square.  Why were there so many people??  The flipping Rome Marathon, that's why!!  >:(     In the end, we went to Mass at another church, which was beautiful, but I did feel very disappointed.  Oh well, at least we still have the tickets to say that we almost went!!   :)

Aww that was crap dulciana after all that effort I'm sad for you as that would have been your highlight.your anxiety would have most definately been through the roof anyone's would but there's always next year lol.good excuse to go back.pope Paul came to Glasgow in 1978 in the famous pope mobile and he came to the park at BellaHouston opposite where I lived so I also had the luxury of hanging out my tenement window watching the crowds but Rome was the icing on the cake for me,funny thing is my husband and children are R.C and I'm Protestant but it meant so much to me I'd have been a great catholic
When we went to St. Paul's sq there were little shops there and I got a certificate that was blessed by the pope but it had to be sent to me and I waited about 5 or 6 months with everyone saying I'd been ripped off but it did come just in time for Easter, sadly it's been lost with all the house moves but I felt so special at the time lol.hope I've not bored you it was just a happy memory for me.

We have the passion play booked at Oberammergau in June 2020 its once every ten years and we booked the fairytale castles tour with it can't wait for that one, many years ago we were in Belgium and wondered what all the fuss was about the streets were heaving with people so we found a little pavement cafe and sat down to have a bite to eat and god we didn't realise we were slap the middle of the procession of the holy blood,we had unwittingly secured grandstand seats in the pavement cafe and it was fabulous watching it,all the priests in their coloured robes and guards with machine guns and of course the chalice with the holy blood in it carried high it was astounding,we really have been lucky, right place right time, same in Jerusalem we got to light a candle in Christ's birthplace supposedly,I don't know don't care it was just so special to me.My next wish list is Lourdes.thats quite achievable not so expensive as the others.told you I'd have been a great catholic

That sounds really wonderful, Daisydot.  I'd love to visit Lourdes one day, too.

Yes it was Paris Roubaix CLKD, We watched the race in two places. When the race reached our second viewing spot the riders were very spread out and lots had already quit because of the early crashes. Better half and son went on the the velodrome to watch the finish but they dropped me at the hotel so I saw it on the tv after a lovely shower to was the dust off  ;D

We enjoyed the day and then heard the sad news about the young rider, such an awful thing to happen  :'(

Hi tiddles

Good for you!,

We went to Majorca last August, only for 4 days.
It rained for 2 of them, ok the other 2 but not brilliant.
But it made us think about it this year, because moneys tight,
although I'd go somewhere, OH isn't so sure, so I don't think we'll
be going anywhere this year.

Oh well, I can always watch ‘the  Durells ‘.   :sigh:

So have a good time enjoy yourself.
Worry about next week when it gets here, life's too short to worry.

What I would love is a holiday where I can relax and come back feeling refreshed.  Instead, every holiday Hubby and I go on is spent rushing manically around, looking at as many famous sights and monuments (largely all Hubby's choice - he's a history buff) as we can fit in.  When we went to Rome a few weeks ago, my feet and legs were completely puggled at the end of each day after doing this all the time we were there.  Hubby has much longer legs than me so he can stride while I have to skitter along all the time!  (bit like 2-against-3, in musical terms  ;D!)  It's not that I'm against seeing what there is to see, but the odd "just wandering locally"-plus-coffees-and-whatever day would allow me to unwind and come back feeling as if I've had a holiday - rather than come back feeling as if I need one!  :o   Anyone else, or do all your other halves let you relax on holiday?  I'd love to know!  :)

We have various types of holiday.  Long weekends doing museums, walking, scenery.  Himself likes fishing so days out: me in the camper dozing and watching wild-life, him casting all day long from a boat.  When we had a  :scottie: we had self-catering holidays which meant a lot of walking.  In all kinds of weather.  All around the UK.

I look at the various town information web-sites for accommodation ideas and places to go.  We are fairly relaxed, even if we went abroad we would have a day off and a day site-seeing.

Dulciana - your description reminds me of holidays with my parents in the years between stopping going away with my maternal grandparents and starting caravanning!  They used to drag us at break-neck speed around sights (and sites!), up mountains (I have bad memories of a day up Snowdon!!), you name it!  Hubby and I are much more chilled on holiday - we both work long hours, so holiday time is for relaxing.  We do sight-see, visit places, museums, etc, but at a measured pace!

Could you suggest a couple of 'chilled' days by inserted into the itinerary of your next holiday?  Or maybe a day (or even just half a day) when hubby does his sight-seeing thing and you stay at your accommodation and relax?  It's your holiday too, after all.

Well, not exactly a holiday (we've had one of those already this year) but I'm going down to London at the end of July for a week's organ course.  Going to be lots of playing and hard work but lots of fun (I think!).  Leaving Hubby on his own-y-o to keep an eye on my Dad then coming back to bore him with all the chit-chat about the course.  I'm getting quite exited because there are lots of amazing instruments in London!  :)

Oh do enjoy it!  I went to College on musical long-weekends when I was 15 and 16, loved it.  Met people who were really talented - we came from all over Norfolk to meet up, practised for 3 days B4 giving a Concert to parents etc. who had arrived to collect us.  I often wonder what happened to those really talented players  :-\

I have done, CLKD, yes, although even then it had gone up since I first looked into it a week ago.

Some people find that buying split tickets for a journey is cheaper: from station to station rather than straight through  ::)

Tickettysplit (sounds like a train  ::) )

It does, doesn't it Hurdity?  Very onomatopoeic!  :)

Well, I've got all my travel booked for my London organ course in a couple of months' time and I'm looking forward to it.  However, I'm also a bit worried about several things - I'm hoping there will be people of all ages there and not just 20-and-30-somethings; I'm hoping I don't get anxious or unwell; I hope I have the stamina for this intensive week; if it's hot, I hope I can stand the heat (I don't like heat); I hope I can pal-up with other course attendees so that I'm not negotiating London on my own; and I hope we'll all be safe.   (This is all because I can't hold Hubby's hand as he'll be back at home......!)

1) buy a little hand held battery fan in case of heat
2) take a little first aid bag with you as a crutch I always do this.
3) The week of the trip rest up no food shopping stock up beforehand
4) plan a route before you go and write yourself a wee plan
5) if 1-2-3-4 fail you grab hubby and make him go with you he can go sightseeing as you said previously he likes that lol.
In any event go and enjoy and have fun life's too short for “what ifs” isn't it xx

Oh thank you, Daisydot, this is so helpful - you've given me some great ideas here.
Plan a route - yes, good point.  We'll be visiting organs in various churches across the city, so it would help to know where these are and how to reach them.
And a small fan and first aid bag - yes indeed!
I'd love to take Hubby with me, but he'll be back up here keeping an eye on my Dad.
And you're right about going and having fun.  I mean, this is a week doing something I absolutely love!   :)

Hi I'm new here  :)

I just spotted this thread and thought how lovely it is, my holiday to Lanzarote in 10 weeks is one of the things that is keeping me going at the moment. I've been struggling a bit lately but the thought of a week's total relaxation in a villa (our own private space, yay) is wonderful.  ;D 8)

GOOGLE Maps are SO useful.  Put your hotel into the map and use the little yellow person to 'walk' the area.  You can get an idea of how far apart places are too by using the 'destination' facility.  Then make notes dulciana.

Have an emergency pack of biscuits etc. and eat B4 you  are hungry.  Even if it means that you eat less at proper meal times.  It won't matter for a few days.  Wear comfy shoes.  Keep bottles of water to hand.  Pain relief if necessary.  If all fails, grab a Taxi back to your lodgings.

Welcome GiggsC - enjoy.

We are staying in Gran Canaria in very spacious bungalows at a hotel.  Spotlessly clean, near a nature reserve, 5 swimming pools, very good food etc.  We like to go in June before schools break up so its a bit quieter.

We usually go to Adults only hotels but this is a family hotel and to be fair its mainly babies and pre-schoolers although there are a handful of slightly older kids who have obviously been taken out of school.

It hasn't spoilt our holiday but OMG some people let their kids screech, run around in the restaurant and dont seem to discipline them at all.  Theres a couple we often see with 2 little boys about 6 and 7.  At mealtimes both parents are either texting or glued to their phones and the kids are left to run around and help themselves to the buffet and then play about with their food.  There seems to be no family interaction at all and the boys are just ignored.  I have to take my hat off to the waitresses as people just walk away leaving all the debris that kids make all over the table or on the floor and they clear the whole lot up.

I probably sound an old fuddy duddy but its been a real eye opener for me as we made sure our children sat down properly when we ate out and certainly wouldnt let them run around or make a mess.

I think we will be back to Adults only next holiday but we are having a lovely holiday apart from this.  ;D

A few years ago we took Mum a set of cafes on one floor.  Rooms can be made larger/smaller by using screens.  We were aware that there was a party for a 9 year old with lots of similar aged kids there.  One 'escaped' from the group and began pulling chairs around in the area we were sitting.  He wanted to get to the double doors onto the balcony but it meant pushing by our chair/table ............  :whist:  "Are you with the others in that room over there?" was my question. "Yep" was the reply.  "So I suggest that you go back on your own room and ask your family whether you can be in here with us and bring your father with you" .  He slowly wandered back, giving me a look ......... an adult arrived from that area so I shouted over "I think you have lost a child" ......... with all the protection legalities etc. ........

He began to wander back a few moments later so I half-rose from my chair ......... he skiddalled.  I won't put up with other peoples' children.  End of.  If parents appear to be on their gadgets I make a loud comment ...........

At breakfast today the family on the next table consisted of Mum, Dad and two little boys . One was very small, about 2 and the other maybe 5.  Father went and got the food, mother put a mini Ipad in front of each child, cut up their sausages and left them watching their cartoons. My hubby said “I have seen everything now.”

My niece is the same though, she puts her two kids in their car seats and puts these mini Ipads on the seats in front.  It seems that kids have to be constantly amused these days. I dont think it does any good though  because they both have the attention span of gnats.  They come to mine and they want TV on, I tell them if they dont sit  and watch it goes straight off. A minute later they want their Ipads or electronic games on, then they want to go in the garden, then they want to go in the summerhouse .... they literally just cannot sit still for a minute. When theyve gone I go and tidy up my summerhouse as they move all the chairs, turn all the knobs on the radio and CD player and throw all the cushions around.

Snooze.  The parents and other carers were in general, unaware.  They were all in another room talking to each other, not keeping an eye on the children running in and out!  In these days of 'protection' issues .......... my point also is that the parents paid a lot of money to hire that facility [I know what it costs on an hourly basis] and the children should have been inter-acting with each other, not looking to annoy others.  We were not allowed to touch anything that belonged to Mum or Dad, we had to ask to go into each other's rooms and even now I feel 'odd' going into Mum's bedroom or when going through her items.  Like she's there, watching over my shoulder  ;D.

When Himself and I were in Butlins in the mid-1970s, kids ran in and out of the cinema - even then they didn't know how to sit still to watch a film!

When my kids were younger and we were eating out with them, quite often an older person would come up and compliment us on how well behaved our children were! I know that some people do prefer to be in 'child free' zones but it's not always possible.

Yes, most parents nowadays seem to give their very young kids ipads or whatever to keep them entertained but I think it's just the sign of the times. Each generation is different and unfortuately, my kids generation is the one of iphones/ipads/social media blah, blah.Kids don't seem to play out anymore either and are often anti social as they hardly ever interact anymore other than over social media etc. I would hate to have been young in this generation.

Often I feel parents do anything for a 'quiet life'. I know I have with my kids but I have never lived near family. I had to look after my kids 24/7. I couldn't send them to Grandparents etc for a few hours. When you never get a break from your kids, it is easy to give them something that keeps them quiet, but I would never have given my children ipads at such a young age. All mine had to wait until they were around 11/12 (and not ipads, a cheaper version!) but of course all their friends have the latest gadgets and they want to be like their friends but we don't have playstations or xboxes but parenting is hard work and I would hate to feel that other parents were judging me!
Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: CLKD on June 09, 2018, 08:54:58 PM
I was raised away from child care, i.e. grandparents.  Mum stayed at home.  Dad went out to work.  Normal in those days.  We had a sand pit with buckets and small spades; swings in the orchard; scooters, cycles, roller skates.  On rainy days Mum would pull out the table and find large sheets, underneath we could have been anywhere.  Kids seem not to have a sense of adventure in the same way, nor do they gain 'making up pretend game' skills.

No lego etc..  Lots of colouring books, magic painting ....... now, how did that work  ;)
Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: Snoooze on June 09, 2018, 09:19:50 PM
We were brought up the same but in those days, you could wander far and wide all day long out playing and our Mum had all day to herself doing housework etc without us under her feet.

I also stayed at home to bring up my children while my husband worked but we don't live in a particularly safe area and so I couldn't let me kids go off playing all day like I did. It just wasn't safe. As I say, each generation is different and each particular child can be more demanding than another. I feel we shouldn't judge other parents when we're out and about. I certainly don't and in fact I quite often give support when a mother may be struggling with the behaviour of her kids.

The problem now is both parents work and sometimes at the weekend too, they then come home to shopping, cooking and housework as well as full time jobs. Sadly there's not the time to entertain the kids so the tv and iPad compensate. Also it's not safe to just let them go out to play on the street unsupervised anymore. When I used to get home from school it was all done and my dinner on the table cos Mum was at home and I was lucky to be able to do this too until my three were older and I went back to work just part time. We can't wait for our holidays so that we can spend 24/7 with the kids on the beach, in the pool and no sign of a Tele or iPad.

How lovely,
We went to Scotland years ago, and before we left , England-and Scotland had a massive dumping of
snow, but we still went. Lol
We drove up to Inverness, stayed in a log type cabin, and it was -20 degrees.  Lol
I've never felt cold like it......
It was only me and OH, and our dog. The snow was that deep, our dogs legs sank in the snow right up to her belly,it looked like she had no legs in photos......lol
But the mountains were something else. Totally beautiful.

I like to go abroad because the hotels are better, everywhere is cleaner, the weather is more guaranteed and its excellent value for money.

I have taken many breaks in this country and stayed in hotels and they really are not a patch on hotels abroad.  I did enough holidaying in this country when the kids were small and money was tight!

We don't, complain enough  ::).  I don't think that we say 'thank you' to those in service industries either.  We went to a Hotel in Brighton eversomany years ago and the on-line photos were great, think that they had nicked them off someone else's website 'cos the place was run down and needed several coats of paint plus a bit of organisation as the staff were Bulgarian.  However.  It was the most comfy place we had stayed in a long time  ;D and on the back of that weekend we bought our Very Large Bed  :D.  I did have a chat to the Owner about the lack of organisation and he thanked me - they were new and he put my points forwards whilst we were having breakfast the next morning.  Quiet civilised.

My daughter and I stayed in a hotel in Bournemouth overlooking the sea.  the room we were given looked out on the car park. It was tiny. When you opened the bathroom door it actually hit the bed.  Every single drawer was broken. The room stank of mould. The wooden window frames were rotten. the wallpaper was all hanging off around the windows.  The bathroom was like something out of the 60s with the most ancient  shower head you ever saw with just a trickle of water coming out.  All the tiles were slimey and cracked.  We complained and they said they had no other rooms. I sent photos to the coach company we booked with and by the next morning we were given a large room with sea view, cane furniture etc.  It was by no means perfect but a lot better.  I have never encountered poor quality rooms like this abroad.

Because mainland Europeans wouldn't put up with it.  They would pack up and move to another hotel.  I have done that in the past in the UK  ...... can't remember why but we simply upped and went the next morning  :-\.  We have also done so abroad, when camping: if the stand over the hole in the ground loos weren't spotless  :o, we moved to the next site !

Rome is definitely on our list for next year, or the year after ::).  Have a lovely time.

We are off in 10 days to do a river cruise on the Danube.  Fly to Budapest then down to Vienna and back again.  Really looking forward to it but looks like the weather will be 30 degrees plus.  Oh well should be used to it by now.  Packing lots of shorts and tee shirts and the boat is fully air conned.

Love river cruising.  Lots of scenery and no sea sickness. :sick02:

Hi all,
I'm new on here. Hope you all enjoy what ever breaks you have planned. We are off to Malta in September for a week. This is really adventurous for me as I don't like flying! and I am leaving the house under the care of my 19 year old son who has lots of friends who like to party! I had a good day back in March and thought I can do it!! My earliest memories are of Malta as my dad was stationed there. I'm just hoping my anxieties don't spoil it.

Two weeks on Saturday and counting here we come Rome, can't wait to see how much of it I remember lol it's been years since my last trip there.last time I went I got talking to the lady who feeds the feral cats at the coliseum, the government pays her to look after them as it helps keep the vermin down,I wonder if she's still doing it ,that's on my to do list I'll load up my suitcase with stinky cat food lol I also got told you now have to pay to go into St. Peter's square so again be interesting to see if that's factual. We are going by legers luxuria coach this time,no flying, the coaches are just beautiful so well thought out for touring.very excited 😘/ Jeanie

She's still doing it! The sanctuary is called Torre Argentina Cats Sanctuary. I've got a sweatshirt from the shop. Website used to be www.gattidiroma.com. or romancats.org

From the Devon BBC News

Dad 'marks' schools boss's holiday fine letter - worth a look-see.  Me, I think it disgusting that the Education Authorities think it necessary to fine parents.  After all, every day is a learning curve !
Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: Shadyglade on August 10, 2018, 04:40:53 PM
It's a pointless exercise. Even paying the fines parents still save money on the cost of a holiday.

Too much interference. 1984 springs to mind.
Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: CLKD on August 10, 2018, 06:18:47 PM
Yep.  But if you said '1984' to anyone these days, they would wonder in the same way as they wonder what a red 'phone box might be  ::)

It's about OFSTED reports in schools, not education.   :-X .  Instead of encouraging as much travel and out of school experiences as possible!  Choosing the holiday destination; packing the suitcase; carrying passports and visas = organisational skills; exploring new cultures = geography and history; new foods = Domestic Science; weather changes = meterology .......... reading a book instead of being on a device due to no wifi ..... skin care after swimming and when in the sunshine = self awareness.

This subject is always a minefield. I believe that if it's seen as ok to remove children for holidays during term time then it should also be ok for staff to also take their holidays at any time. An LSA in a primary school will have to pay between £900 and £1100 for a uk apartment during the holidays which, on the 7th September, will drop in price to around £500. They also only get paid for 20 days holiday a year meaning they are unpaid for the other 9 weeks total holiday. The whole system needs reviewing.

Yes. Sorry it does stand for Learning Support Assistant which usually means working one to one with a child. Teaching Assistants are also in the same boat re fairly low salary but only able to take holiday during the most expensive times.

However.  Teachers get a whole 6 weeks holiday  ;)

As for teachers going into schools to be with pupils when they get their Exam results, what's that about!  What's wrong with them receiving a brown envelope at home with parents to deal with the results?

Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: Shadyglade on August 11, 2018, 03:58:44 PM
Some people have jobs where there are restrictions on when they can take their annual leave. If that doesn't fit with school holidays what are they supposed to do.

It used to be the case that it was at the discretion of the school. Now its all super official with no wriggle room. Common sense gone out of the window again.

They say it's so they can support them, but my three boys would all rather have received brown envelopes at home. It seems to be a bit of a circus to me. They actually stage the pre-invited kids jumping for joy when they receive their fabulous results, no pictures of the poor kids who are in tears

If teachers didn't have to go into Schools etc. they would get the full holiday allotted to them!  Our College Results were posted on a board in the corridor  :-\.  So everyone saw everyone's reactions  >:(

My neighbour does support but I don't agree with it.  Cheap labour .......... education authorities should pay full whack or employ teachers.

Hi all im cutting my trip short, ive really struggled with the Ibs and the hotel has been fantastic catering for me while I'm here but last night was the worst night ever I had some vegetable soup and the pain all night was awful in my back and left ribs then horrible trots and nausea followed,I can't enjoy being away from my safe place when I'm like this it's so humiliating too.The one thing I wanted to do was Capri but that was today and there was no way I could manage it,never mind there's always next time I guess.my ibs tablets are not even touching it.
I've booked flights back for tomorrow so I'll just chill at hotel till then,we've enjoyed what we did do on the tours but it's time to call it quits now.😘

Back from hols in Lanzarote had amazing time, absolutely shattered it's hard keeping up with the younger family members but wouldnt have it any other way.  I can sleep now I'm back!  Had no problems whatsoever with atrophy while away which makes me now seriously consider an earlier retirement as my job sitting all day (even though I now have a custom built chair) is obviously the problem as well as the long hours, stress etc etc.sometimes 9 hours a day.  Going back to lanzarote again in October so have a lot of decisions to make.

Why do we all stress now when going away, I know I worry about the taxi being late, I check everything in my bag about 5 times on the way to the airport, I worry about being ill on holiday blah blah blah. When we were younger none of this stuff even crossed our minds, ever, we just didn't care or we were more positive in our thinking. Why do we over think everything and usually negatively..  If this is being older and wiser it sucks.

Why do we keep worrying over silky little things.

When we get there I usually have a great time and wonder why I was worrying,  but then a day or two before coming home it all starts again. It spoils the excitement of going away and also the last couple of days of the holiday. I wish I could think more positively and not always expect the worst to happen because 9 times out of 10 it don't. I've noticed people that do think positive about everything seem to have more stress free lives, I'm going to try it.

Couldn't sleep CLKD?

I often get funny tum when abroad (husband never does!) and don't go anywhere without my Immodium - always does the trick, along with my trusty indigestion tabs for when I wake in the night and can't sleep from too much rich food. It's all part of the holiday  ::). I'm like a travelling medicine cabinet - fortunately don't need to use half of it but it's a comfort blanket to have it all there including the migraine tabs, various pain-killers, Lemsip, alkaseltzer, HRT (patches, Utrogestan, Tesosterone gel, vagifem) )  ;D

Seems a long time ago since my last proper hol.....(early August!!!). Not got another one until next year now and nothing planned except in July....

I'm back safe and sound. I was so anxious before mainly because of flying and worrying whether I would be well or not and how hot it would be. Well I hated flying though it was smooth, no delays etc. I played a 2 hour game of scrabble with OH on plane to take my mind off it so the journey went pretty quick. It was awfully hot, too hot for me and even OH who doesn't mind the heat found it too much especially as we are explorers rathers than sitters on beaches. Should have gone in April! My fault for assuming it would be cooler in September not 35 degrees! As for being unwell I felt great and Malta is a really beautiful, interesting place.

I feel just like you CLKD that I'd like to wizz through and know everything is all ok so I could really realax.

Have decided though, no more planes, unless really short flights. It's not worth acute anxiety for at least 4 days and there's so many beautiful places in the UK. Next year Edinburgh on the train (don't like cars either!!)

Hope everyone's hols have gone well

Yeah the bit in between was pretty good, thanks, but it was stiffling. Having an evening meal by the sea was lovely as the temperature and humidity dropped down a bit

We plan to do Leeds as well as Edinburgh next year as I've never been. We'll also go to Harlech as that's one of our usual haunts. Any places in the UK you'd recommend CLKD?

I was supposed to be in Bologna now but didn't go due to being unwell, However my Swedish friend who is there has told me that it is very hot there too (30 C instead of the usual approx 24-26 which we have had in previous years). Last year it was cool and wet there.

My comment here was just meant to be about  the  hot weather rather than my health. I am feeling better now but that is just infuriating in a way as I should probably have gone on the trip!  I may well book it again for next year. Hi Annie0710

Sorry you are suffering from the heat I used to love it the hotter the better but find it more challenging these days. That's one of the reasons why we go to Lanzarote as there's always a breeze which is helpful. It is currently very hot in Lanzarote so it appears to be all over Europe.
Like you I find a place in shade and stay there you still get a tan but not the burnt crisp look which isn't a good look anyway and not good for your skin.
We also have a couple days out inland which is also cooler than the coast.
I also need a breeze or air com for a good nights sleep.

I suppose you'll just have to drink a lot  but don't forget the water.  ;D

At least your having a good time enjoy.

Title: Re: Holidays 2018

Hi jillydoll

It's a hot, opressing dust and sand laden wind which blows from North Africa and the Sahara everything gets covered in a sandy dust and the wind can feel like someone is constantly blowing a hot hairdryer in your face.
Visability  is considerably reduced during a Calima but fortunately they only last between one and three days. It can however cause problems for people with respiratory problems.

Hope that makes sense jillydoll.

It would be really helpful if you could update me Dierdre as our friends are returning home at the weekend so won't have Intel on the ground 😀

I totally understand your worry because I worry every time I have to go abroad especially if I have to fly! It always fine once I'm there - and even usually once I've actually driven away from the house all packed up and have locked the door behind me!

Have a great time, go with the flow, enjoy the sunshine - you'll be fine when you get there! If you don't sleep one night - then sleep in the next or sleep in the day - you're on holiday. If you're ill you're ill but at least there is noweher else you need to be or do :)

Home yesterday after a 12 night canaries and Morocco cruise from Southampton. Really really enjoyed it, Morocco was so interesting and the tour guide was so funny and informative, before we arrived there we felt a bit nervous because of things I'd read about the aggressive selling techniques but there was no need. A shame we left before the snake charmers turned up but we saw the fortune tellers getting ready in the square, it had been such a hot day the charmers don't turn up until the evening when it's cooler, and I don't blame them  ;D

Our other favourite port was Madeira, very chatty shop owners and lovely coffee and Portuguese custard tarts  ::) we also did a wine tasting in a vineyard in Galicia Spain, of course we enjoyed it  ;) and had a scenic drive around the beautiful coast. The remaining ports were in Lisbon, Lanzarote, Gran canaria and la Corunna, all very nice and the weather was good apart from thunder and lightening as we arrived in Madeira but I enjoyed watching it from the balcony.

The worst thing is I now have a mountain of washing  waiting and it's bowing a gale and pouring with rain, maybe I won't be needing my summer clothes for a while so I'm in no hurry to tackle it but if anyone would like to volunteer I won't refuse  ::)

If your sheet was in the line here one if two things would happen:

1. It would be so wet and heavy you wouldn't be able to carry it.   Or

2. You would have to go to Ireland to reclaim it in this gale.

I'm back in the UK now this last trip was just for 5 nights (last minute decision)but it was a really relaxing few days.
Our trip next month has been booked for ages as we always have 2 weeks in November.
We did own an apartment in Lanzarote but we sold it last year it was an ideal lock up and leave property but not big enough for the whole family (bought when we only had one grandchild   ;D )
All the family are going for New Year as middle son will  be 40 while we are there so we have rented two 3 bed villas next door to each other.

We may buy something bigger when we retire as we both would like to spend our winters somewhere warmer than the UK.
Enjoy your break.

Off to York on Friday for 3 nights. Going for the BBC History weekend. Lots of time for shopping and sightseeing as well.

Oh that sounds great! Enjoy!!

LL I get it now :)
New Year sounds like it will be a dream...  I adore big family do's. Our villa is a 3 bed.. fine for if some of the family come but no chance if the whole tribe descend!... We are hoping for that next easter... might have to look out for some z-beds!

CLKD whats your ideal vacation?

In bed.  Being waited on ........ lots of bubble baths ...........

I would love to go to the Italian Lakes but anxiety keeps me closer to home.  It is simply a lack of time ......... we get plenty of enjoyable days out though  ;) which means my own bath and bed each night.

Weekends away at some of the UKs beautiful Guest Houses and B&Bs are what I used to love when I had a demanding 9-5... get to explore some exquisite corners of the country...  Splashing out on those with a lovely rolltop bath really topped it off for me...

Id like to explore the cities of the world now... totally need countryside/mountains but to dip into city life as a tourist is on my bucket list....

Several years ago we thought about selling up, buying a small flat so that we could spend 6 months in an area of the UK to really find out what was on offer; then moving to another area for 6 months: but I love my garden too much  ;D

York is lovely.  So much history, one could live there and not see it all.  Chester is another place ........

Plus DH bought me a pair of new boots and a handbag result.

Roll on the 28th December I'll be back in Lanzarote for New Year.
Although not happy as our flight has been moved from 6.40 am to 3.50 pm do feel like we have lost a day  :'(
DH decided he would book the Escape room as you get free food and drinks and as we are going with family it would be cheaper than paying for lunch and a couple of drinks in a restaurant at the airport however you can't book for more than 6 people (I think to try and stop hen and stag parties) DH rang and explained we were family and had  small children with us but was advised they couldn't accommodate any more large parties so we have made  two separate bookings so we'll have to chance we can all sit together  :bang:

So that will be Scotland off our list then  >:(.  :'(

Their Government is in consultation about charging an extra £2.00 per tourist per night charge as a 'tax' .  Well actually.  Nope.  We put monies into the local areas that we visit: either by paying for a hotel room/food, B&B, Guest House, Camping site ........ we tend to eat in cafes etc., buy post cards and other items .......... we eat breakfast where we stay and other meals when we are hungry.  We pay car park charges already.  We go to Charity shops for books ........

How will B&B etc. decide who are visitors and who are commercial travellers or people working in the area?  I suppose those visitors from abroad/US will be totally unaware anyway but here, in England  >:(

No I am glad but I feel rough.saw a nice gp today so unfortunately it's the hpylori again so it's back to a higher dose triple therapy to try and knock it out, if it doesent work this time then he said theyll do further investigations.this lot will probably knock the stuffing out me in not happy about it but no other choice really the pains so bad.never mind I'll just plod away again thanks every one 😘DD

Why hasn't previous treatment worked?   :-\
Title: Re: Holidays 2018
Post by: Droopeydrawers on December 13, 2018, 11:54:21 PM
 ::)
It hasn't worked because hpylori has become very resistant to most antibiotics so they have to try different combinations each time to wipe it out.its obviously very harsh on the body having to do this and for someone like me with recorded allergies to quite a few of the antibiotics it's difficult for any gp to get that right combination that's not going to damage me further.i find it very scary and a bit of a trial trying to get the timings right and because of the pain of the stomach ulcers this thing causes i have to watch my food intake so carefully, it's one of the worst problems I've had to deal with and really pulls me down so I really do feel for all these other ladies suffering gastric issues.I have quite a library of gut books now lol I'm determined to beat it but it does rule your life like it or not and I'm annoyed at losing my holiday as I had some naughty plans in mind for hubby 😉

Hellooooooooooooo ladies,a very happy new year to you all.
Had a lovely cruise & canaries were warm, just perfect, unfortunately Madeira peed it down but were dry spells too so I could whizz round the shops, poor hubby 😆
My stomach played up a few days so that kinda annoyed me,I actually threw up at 5am new year morning, think it was coz I had champagne at midnight then went straight to bed, I'm such a wimp when it comes to being sick but I did feel better after and slept til 10.30!!!
Anyway got a ct colonoscopy on Wednesday morning, will determine if I've crohns or colitis,I'm still hoping I'm just intolerant to certain foods or drink, I did drink a lot of fresh orange juice as it's sooooooo nice over there,I'm guessing too much acidity bothers my stomach a bit.So tomorrow I've to eat nothing and take that horrid laxative stuff,so you can all picture me on the loo as I reply to some of the posts🚽🧻😂
Nice to have me back? I'm only here to lower the tone.Hope you are all ok
Xxxx
