I would definitely say meno has a smell - well for me anyway the odour my body gives off has changed - in spite of a strict hygiene regime, just more musky, heavy - armpits and "elsewhere" - it was much worse on HRT though.  But that's just me.

Have tried all sorts of deodorants - Mitcham, crystal and the one without alcohol - don't seem to make much difference though.  Just another symptom of "the change" ...

Yep - that smell is definitely musky. My OH loved it!! Since I went on HRT I have lost "that" smell - something that I think is great but he thinks is a shame  ;D

Post by: CLKD on August 11, 2009, 11:04:36 AM
An anti-persperant might work more efficiently than a deoderant ........ anti- gets rid of the sweating and deoderant deoderises, huge difference in what they are designed to do.  Off to put on yet another T-shirt !
Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: Night_Owl on August 11, 2009, 11:17:53 AM
which deodorant do you find most effective? - none of them seem to deodorise me!  Mitcham seems to block the pores a lot and create a nasty barrier.

Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: CLKD on August 11, 2009, 11:20:00 AM
I only use an anti-persperant if we go to an event or if we are with a lot of people in a small space.  Otherwise I bath each evening and once dried put talc as and where necessary.  I tend to smell of old beds on waking but it's not unpleasant and Hubby can't smell me .......

Post by: Hotnbothered on August 11, 2009, 11:37:20 AM
i use amplex, I get it from Superdrug, seems to work for me  :) I haven't got a very good sense of smell, so I think it works  ;D ....think hubby would tell me if it didn't & daughter certainly would  ;D
Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: Taz2 on August 11, 2009, 11:39:34 AM
My musky smell came from all over though - back, breasts, legs etc - it was exuded by the whole body and not something that a deodorant could hide

This thread kind of typifies exactly why I love this forum, and have missed it whilst I've been on hols!  ;D

Where else can we discuss everything without fear of being seen as outcasts? LOL

Seriously though,I have become aware of a slightly more pungent aroma 'down below',and as a result usually shower twice rather than once a day now.
Another thing I do....and this won't suit a lot of you because of allergic reactions etc.,....but I use a lot of soaps/bath bombs/massage bars from Lush, and I store them nestled amongst my knickers. The fragrance gives me a little lift, and hopefully helps to counteract that 'old lady' whiff that Lee Evans so hilariously talks of in one of his shows.....

When Nan is dancing at a party and lifts her skirt, there is a waft of unpleasant air,and you reach for the Glade !  ;D ;D ;D

Nice to have you back Jilly and I'm really glad that your hols went well.

As for the whiff - I would love to use Lush but you are right about the allergic reaction. Though they use natural ingredients it is the sulphates that cause me to itch apparently - like the sulphites in white wine! Funny that - have managed without the Lush but put up with the itch from the wine  ;D ;D ;D

I put those scented sheets for the tumble dryer in our drawers [name escapes me begins with B] to give a little 'lift' but not in the pillow case drawer or I am unable to sleep  ::)

As for 'old lady whiff' that's urine not menopause  >:(

OMG...lol, I dont want to smell whiffy but I don notice my armpits have became a lot more sticky!  I dont use antidepressants as I prefer to use organic deodrants and carry a small pack of wipes in my handbag to keep any unpleasant odours at bay  :)

Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: CLKD on August 14, 2009, 10:16:17 AM
Remember: anti-perspirants stop perspiration - it's the bacteria in the sweat at it dries that causes the BO

Deoderants purely deoderise ....... doesn't make any difference if they are organic or not, they are still chemicals  ;)
Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: dinkydo on August 14, 2009, 10:35:52 AM
CLKD the reason I choose to use Organic is because I dont approve of animal testing, no parabens are used and also the alum used in antispirants cloggs the pores and has had a lot of negative reports.  Its all down to personal choice and my being health conscious but I understand this wouldnt be everyones choice.   :)

I use talc under my arms 'cos it smells pretty ..........  :-* I used to use 'femfresh' down there when a teen, dad used to say "why not smell natural like the French girls do "  ... I nearlly killed him, I had left an aerosol in my waste bin and in those days he burned rubbish, the can exploded knocking him off his feet .........  :o
Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: Taz2 on August 14, 2009, 11:21:13 AM
I don't use talc very often but I think it's because I read somewhere that it's not that good for you. It's definitely had some bad press when used down below.

Some talcs are purer than others; when I had radiation I was told to use only Johnson's baby powder as it doesn't contain zinc; and no talc at all when having mammograms

This is what I read http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1063040/Cancer-alert-talc-Women-using-powder-day-risk.html  but it's to do with "between the legs" as they so eloquently put it! Deodorant has been linked to breast cancer of course so it looks as if we will just have to gently "hum"

That's very interesting Taz.....I have always remembered that years and years ago (I was only a teenager at the time!),one of my mum's friends developed ovarian cancer and her surgeon told her after the op that analysis of the tumour had found grains of talc.He said that this wasn't uncommon, and that he firmly believed that talcum use should be severely limited by women, and never used in the genital/rectal area.

She sadly died at quite a young age,and it's something that has always stuck in my mind. I only ever powder my toes, and then only sparingly. And I never used talc on my daughter's nappy area either for the same reason.

My mum used to pay for a 'newsletter' type thing each week for a charity & I remember when i was young I read on it that they believed talc could cause cancer. I only put talc on my daughters tummy- Johnson's & not very much of it either.

Until I hit Peri, I never used to sweat anywhere unless I'd been really active in the garden or something, never needed anti-poo, but then it all changed, I could smell myself but it wasn't unpleasant. I can smell things others can't and sometimes it's a real nuisance. Hubby can't understand why I go round the house like a bloodhound until I can pinpoint the smell and rectify it if needs be. But since starting HRT 10 weeks ago, I smell awful, like a bin that needs to be put out. Hubby can't smell it, but I can and I can't fix it no matter how much I wash. (and if I don't wash, boy oh boy)

Hi Witches Cat

Could it be your Sinuses are playing up??  Mine were really problematic when I went into menopause and can make you smell things differently.....

Failing that - I would suggest, Sure Maximum Protection - costs about £5 for a cream anti-perspirant but is really good :)  Got mine from Savers or Superdrug....

To be honest the only positive for me in all this meno lark is that the sweats I get do not seem to smell.  This I find very surprising given the copious amount of sweats I get.  Funnily enough until I became meno, I had never really sweated, never needed to buy deodrant in my teens or anything.  If the sweats did smell I would become a total recluse cos I could not stand the shame.  Hopefull I am not deluding myself or have no sense of smell.  My hubby says there is no bad smell but he would probably be scared to say anything else!!!

Post by: Corky on February 28, 2011, 03:51:42 PM
I don't smell either!
I used to get a sweet, rather compelling smell at certain times during my cycle, but absolutely nothing since my periods stopped. I don't even sweat anymore, which is amazing since I was a real sweaty-Betty up until about a year ago. I don't even have to use deodorant every day which, again -for one so formerly given to perspiration - is surprising.

I climbed 175 stairs at the weekend and, despite my heart pumping and legs like jelly, I did not break a sweat.

That said, I do suffer with hypothyroidism and feel cold quite a lot. I am on medication for this and, while my hair is vastly improved, I do still feel the cold.

I have a very good sense of smell too. I can smell what I have eaten in my urine (just from standing over it to flush) and I can smell antibiotics in other people's urine when I go into a public cubicle directly after someone else (freak! I know).

I don't generate any discharge these days either - perhaps that's why I don't have any odour... I don't even have pimples anymore. As great and novel as this experience has been, it has its downside too, which is dry skin.

Come to think of it, I am like a sterile, human substitute, but for my ears...

This could be a whole other thread, but I shall keep it brief: I make an unfeasible amount of ear wax and extract it by sticking hair grips down my ears. This is very dangerous and I am surprised I am not deaf. I know the more I poke the more protective wax I produce, but it is an addictive "hobby"

Corky

I agree, but like modern ovens, 'possibles' are self cleaning and if there is a problem with odour it's more than likely caused by an infection rather than inadequate washing surely?
Title: Re: Oh ERRRR
Post by: Oldteen on May 25, 2011, 06:04:01 PM
My possible smells like roses...

I wonder if it is an infection CLKD? How's your skin? Odour is caused by bacteria, so I wonder if they've gone forth and multiplied? Or maybe a simple change in your brand of antiperspirant would help?

I've just read through the six pages of this thread with interest!

I'm sure you do get more whiffy with age.  Just think how elderly ladies smell (over and under the talc and palma violets).

When I was working in an office, every time I got up from my chair I noticed a funny smell - it wasn't horrible exactly, just "telling".  Quite embarrassing really.

OH agrees that I do sometimes smell under one armpit only (how odd!).  Anti-p does help but I don't find I need to use it every day.

However, I do think that we are a bit obsessed with it all and use far more perfumed stuff than we should on our privates.  And that is probably making the problem worse cos the body is trying to get rid of it!

Title: Re: Oh ERRRR

Shaving under the arm-pits helps as it keeps the area free flwoing  ;)

You have a point there! I don't think I have any kind of condition as I only smell fishy after I've eaten fish! :o

My pubes are getting sparser ( my husband laughs and accuses me of shaving them off) and my underarm hair has all but vanished, but what I do have is longer than it used to be. I also find that antiperspirants give me a rash these days, and the only one I can use is Bionsen, which is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant.

I've noticed that when I nip to the loo, my wee smells unbelievably 'strong'!  I can't place the smell exactly, but sort of herbal, tangy, catches in my throat...?  I've been spraying the air freshener at work after using the ladies, and am getting a bit of a complex!  Also the nice sexy, muskiness of 'down below' that I used to have, has been replaced with something a lot less sexy - Christ, I hate all this.  I feel like my femininity is slowly being stripped away, month by month.

Oh this is cheering this thread - in a terrible kinda way! And why i love this forum...me too. Now do two showers/baths a day, shaving armpits which didn't used to do being a bit of an old 80s why should I feminist kind of girl - also thought it can look quite nice. Use anti perspirant which again never did. Sigh. is no end to the joys of ageing.

Feel very envious of y'all with partners/husbands who share the pain a bit. Broke up with mine 5 years ago (couldn;t keep his d in his ps) Seems no chance at all of ever getting another these sagging whiffing weightgaining sleepless sweating days! Ah me.

Lets hope counterbalanced by wisdom humour etc etc. And can we set up a sister forum for post post post meno as we all move into our 80s.

Yes this is one of our light hearted threads of acceptance, LOL.

I have asked for something from gp for over sweating, i have used it previously but it can burn the skin. Don't know what else to do, my work tunic is polyester and after about an hour i can smell sweat, i have to spray the top with vanish before every wash.

I dont notice any but sometimes wonder if i do imperceptibly? As I certainly could no longer get away without 2 showers a day. Back in the day sometimes I used to just have a wash!

The other thing I notice is that the two scents I've used since in my late teens (both Dior so not cheap) smell "wrong" on me now. Have to find another.

I have tried two different anti perspirants recently that dont have parabens.  Neither of them stop that sweaty smell :(

It said something along the lines of if you havent smelt a smell from another woman its unlikely theybwill have smelt you.

I have a very good sense of smell too. I can smell what I have eaten in my urine (just from standing over it to flush) and I can smell antibiotics in other people's urine when I go into a public cubicle directly after someone else (freak!

I think I smell at the moment, I have been on anti-biotics almost non-stop since February due to a long standing bladder infection and I think they have played havoc with my entire body. My urine smells really strong, perhaps it is the anti-biotics in my urine  :-\

Also my skin smells of vinegar, even when I am in the bath the smell comes out of my pores. My OH says I don't smell though.

I used to smell really nice  :'(

My BO has definitely changed in the last year...didn't realise at the time that it could be a sign of peri, just couldn't work out what was happening.  I've always smelled different when I had my period so I guess it makes sense.  No idea if anyone else can smell it, but I can, even straight after a shower and I HATE IT!!!  People say 'how wonderful' to have a good sense of smell, but it's not great if what you are smelling is horrible.   :(

I'm always ok after a shower but I have to be very careful in the summer to use a good anti perspirant. It's when I wake in the morning that I'm aware that I maybe don't smell so good.
When we have warm weather I need two showers a day just to feel good.

How we smell can also be linked to what we eat   :-\

Oh blimey, yes. THIS. For the brief while I was on Estrogel, it actually smelled worse too! And I believe our sense of smell changes anyway, doesn't it? I know a lot of perfumes these days smell really nasty to me. I don't use them myself (the commercial ones), only nice natural things I get from Whole Foods. A lot of the ones the 'younger generation' (can't believe i'm typing this) use these days just smell like a chemical soup to me. Whatever happened to the sophisticated classics? I have also read that they've messed with these due to new regulations too. I never really liked Chanel No.5 but they've messed with that now as well apparently! Perfume aficionados are now trying to buy up 'vintage' bottles online as they smell vastly superior in their original formulas.

Blinkin' change, everywhere you turn...........{{wanders off muttering}}..........

I have just ordered a deodorant stone & so far, it is working BRILLIANTLY!  You rub it onto damp skin after washing & it's incredible - I have been finding that even 15 minutes after a shower, I can smell my underarms, but now I can go all day with not a single whiff!  I thought I might just be going through a 'less smelly' phase, so after a few days, I switched back to my usual roll-on and the smell came straight back!

 ;D  I hope not!!!

It's a kind of natural mineral salt that works by stopping 'bad bacteria' forming in your sweat (this is what makes it smell).  At least, that's what I understood from the article I read on it!  I read a couple of reviews on various sites and a lot of them mentioned that their stone lasted a couple of years, so I reckon it's worth the bigger outlay at the start (especially as it seems to be working, unlike the other deodorants I have tried!)  If you search for 'deodorant stone' or 'natural mineral deodorant' you should find some.  I got mine from ethical superstore, but I know a lot of different places do it

Perspiration is odourless.  A certain bacteria likes it which causes the smell  ;).

Himself would like me to shave all over  :o but I resist  ;)

I whiff because I haven't had a shower and had a temperature last night, but no one here to smell me so doesn't matter  :)

Oh no!  ;D

Just been watching some Bradley Walsh giggle videos from the Chase, thanks to this thread...so funny has been making me laugh out loud with tears in my eyes ("Contestant breaks chair then farts!" and "Dick Tingeler")

I have a little theory, as in pregnancy when the hormones were crazy the last time, heightened sense of smell etc...maybe it's a hormonal shift in niff perception...I'd like to think so... :o

I think hormones do play a part because my sweat smelled vaguely like a hamsters cage when I first started hrt. Thank god it went after the first few months!
Bradley Walsh, he is such s tonic bless him. I only have to see his face crack into a grin and notice that mischievous twinkle in his eye and I'm off chuckling. I haven't seen the broken chair video, it sounds my kind of thing haha.

Although shaving underarms ( when I was younger and more hairy) definitely made me less sweaty by the end of the day I always use an anti perspirant. I don't think shaving pubic hair would have same effect as some of the bacteria and their breakdown products are different also lots more 'nooks and crannies ' for them to hide. I wash throughly in a daily shower but sometimes not happy with the whiff that I sometimes from that region put it down to coming of HRT and subsequent change in vaginal bacteria.
Sorry to go on but I find this a fascinating subject, but not when it's me that pongs Flutterbyx

Yes that might be an idea CKLD, if I pick the right moment  ;)
I can smell other people sometimes but I am hoping it's only me that can smell myself as its only when I remove my knickers I occasionally get the strange smell. Flutterbyx

As long as you don't have a low-grade infection down there, this too will pass .  I also note that my urine smells of sulphur occasionally or, well I can't describe it.

Yes.  One of the first things I noticed while periods were still a bit awry; a change in armpit sweat smell.  I was never a very sweaty person (I hope!) but this was weird, musky.  No one else ever said anything, including OH.    I don't notice it so much now but I definitely smell differently from my youth!   I seem to remember reading/seeing it as one of the many symptoms of meno (on here probably.)

Have noticed my lovely Mum has a real old lady smell now. Just a sort of mix between old stale perfume on scarves and a slightly musty body smell.

Something else to look forward to huh  :-\

Thank you CLKD, I've been having a bit of a giggle reading through the posts  :D
Luckily mine isn't my pits or the nether regions, it's mainly my chest!! I do have a vague recollection of a vinegary smell but now it's more a damp dog/ fusty washing smell, attractive  :bighug:
I have resorted to a bit of a talcing on the chest (and a lot of the talcing under the boobs) and a light dusting on the inner thighs to ward off the chaff. This seems to do the job for a couple of hours  ::)

Oh my goodness this is a great thread! Thank you CLKD for starting it!

Haven't sifted through all the pages but (warning: totally weird info upcoming) when I started getting night sweats 2 years ago, the sweat that would pool around my outer nostrils smelt like...BBQ-flavour crisps! It was totally gross and this is the only place I've been able to mention it.

My armpits deffo smelt more pungent before HRT. Haven't noticed any difference to my lady garden's fragrance but I'm ready for anything after the BBQ crisp experience!

xxx

Oh that's gross  ;D

There are people that think in colours or hear music with words ........ synsitheseia.

Phermones are important but I really didn't want to smell my own.  I took heart when no one moved from my area in a store as well as DH not noticing ;-)

I have smelly feet. Always have had. 🤷🏼‍♀️
You can’t smell them up next to me, but stick your nose on them, and 🤧😷.  ;D

I’ve tried talc, moisturiser, deodorant. Wash my flip flops regularly, or buy new ones,  and still they have a musty smell. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That could be candida jillydoll.  My Dad's elder brother - you could smell his feet when you went into a room.   Woolly socks washed daily.  Talc etc..  It never bothered me  ::)
