News from the journals 2005: Fishes for flushes!

2005

Some information about effects of a widely used alternative therapy, soy isoflavones,
was reported in Maturitas, June 2005. A controlled trial using soy isoflavones
alone or with the addition of a supplement of polyunsaturated fatty acids
(PUFAs), showed that isoflavone extract alone did not improve hot flushes
compared to placebo but the addition of PUFAs did show a reduction in flushes.
High intake of PUFAs from fish-rich diets or a fish oil supplement have also
been shown from other studies to be beneficial for the cardiovascular system
and, it seems from this study, may also reduce hot flushes. Since this was
a small study, further studies are required to confirm the effect.
