Menopause news
Alcohol and breast cancer risk.
12 November 2007
A study reported in International Journal of Cancer, sought to determine whether alcohol interacts with hormone use on breast cancer risk. 5,035 postmenopausal women from a heart study in Copenhagen were asked about their alcohol intake and hormone use when starting the study in 1981 – 1983 and were followed up until 2002. In total, 267 women developed breast cancer during follow up. Alcohol consumption was associated with a small increased risk of breast cancer, as was hormone use. An interaction was found between the 2 factors - women who took more than 2 drinks per day and took hormones had the greatest greater risk between the groups.
If these findings are confirmed in other studies, the interaction between alcohol and hormones should have an impact on women’s use of hormones and alcohol intake.
