Intrinsa patch

2nd April 2007

Launched at the end of March, the first testosterone patch for women, Intrinsa, is now available in the UK. It is indicated for women who have had a hysterectomy, had their ovaries removed, are taking estrogen replacement therapy and have reduced sexual desire. It is worn on the lower abdomen and should be changed twice per week. Studies have shown an increase in sexual response in women using the testosterone patch compared to those using a dummy patch.
For many years there has been interest in the role of testosterone therapy for women but there have been few options for administering testosterone. It is known that removal of the ovaries leads to a 50% reduction in testosterone production and for some women, this can cause reduction in libido and decreased energy levels and sense of wellbeing. Libido in women is affected by many factors and we should not forget the importance of lifestyle, stress, relationship issues, vaginal dryness, and self-confidence but for some women, this patch will be a useful option to consider.
