Menopause news

News from the journals 2005: Impact of Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Trial.

2005

Concerning risks of HRT, an American survey reported in Women’s Health
Issues describes the major impact that the publication of the WHI results had
on women’s use of HRT and on their trust in medical recommendations.
Of the 204 women surveyed, 54% were taking HRT and of these, 70% stopped hormone
therapy after hearing of the WHI results in July 2002. Further, 26% of those
that had heard of the WHI, reported losing trust in medical recommendations.
Since it is now clear that the risks of HRT shown by the WHI trial were in
fact very small and of minimal relevance to the majority of women who take
HRT for a short time in the early menopausal years to control distressing symptoms,
it is of great concern that the manner in which such results were publicised
was able to have such a devastating effect on the use of HRT.
