For many years it has been claimed that one of the benefits of HRT is to delay
the effects of ageing on skin and many women have noticed an improvement in skin
appearance and texture when taking HRT. A recent study reported in Fertility
and Sterility, August 2005, seems to confirm that this does occur. Although a
small study, it did show that women who used HRT had more elastic skin and less
severe wrinkling than women who had never used HRT, as measured by visual assessment
of severity of wrinkles by a plastic surgeon blinded to HRT use and measurement
of skin rigidity at the cheek and forehead.
It is though, unlikely that HRT would be commenced purely for this effect but
this could be an additional benefit for those women who choose to take HRT for
