Million Women Study results: valid or not?

July 2004

A recent press release by the British Menopause Society states that flaws in the design of the Million Women Study have been highlighted and that any conclusions drawn from the study should now be considered invalid. Concern has been particularly expressed that the study over-estimated the risk of breast cancer related to short term HRT and the statement emphasises the benefits of HRT for both control of menopausal symptoms and for treatment of osteoporosis.

The charity Women's Health Concern, have requested that the Committee of Safety of Medicines withdraw the advice on HRT use which was based on findings from the Million Women Study.
