Stroke risk and HRT use.

January 2005

A report published last week in the British Medical Journal online has suggested an increased risk of stroke with HRT use:

The report is not results from a new study
but describes the findings from a review of many studies, (including studies from 30 years ago using high dose HRT in
men), which have included stroke and HRT use in the results. The alarming stated increased risk of stroke of 29% in HRT
users actually equates to an increase of less than 1 woman per 1000.
This report should not change women's use of HRT, which can still be used for control of menopausal symptoms and for
prevention/treatment of osteoporosis and should still be recommended in women with a premature menopause. When used
appropriately for its licensed indications, the benefits of HRT continue to outweigh the risks for many women. For further
information and comment on the report, read a statement from the British Menopause Society here
