New here and just wanting to write it down
« on: December 05, 2025, 09:00:33 AM »

I am 48 years old, I had an hysterectomy in 2019 leaving ovaries, I also am 10yrs plus underactive thyroid!
Just 10 weeks ago I had an hip replacement and I can only describe these last 10 weeks as hell, mentally hell, the hip replacement pain hasn't even come into it, it is the symptoms I have been having these last weeks have been appalling and im wondering if the major surgery can crash your hormones? Maybe bring about menopause symptoms fast and hard!
My symptoms have been crushing anxiety about health, very very tearful, paranoid about how other people are seeing me, thinking I am annoying folk, feeling forgetful, losing my tread of thoughts, random flushes that seem to start at my stomach and go onto my legs and chest?
The health anxiety though is really very mind consuming and driving me mad! I dont know where i am menopause wise and I rang the drs a few weeks ago and got a call back, talked about all my symptoms with him and he patronised me and ask me where I was getting my source of info from, I told him it was coming from me as the symptoms were in my body! I ended up putting the phone down on him, I know i need to speak to another Dr and I will just need to get mentally in the right frame! I just do not feel myself at all!
Dont know what i expect from anyone here? Maybe just people to say they have and still do feel the same, hope you can get to the end 😀 lol

We hear you!    :welcomemm:

It is possible that a GA will trigger some symptoms but is unlikely to have caused menopause to worsen. Having been starved prior to surgical intervention can cause the body to lack energy for a while until patients begin eating enough.  How is the pain around the replacement area?

Shock however can upset the body and brain, how did U feel when U came round from the GA?  When I had wisdom teeth removed I was shocked but didn't realise until a few weeks later when I woke feeling better.

MayB get an appt with the Nurse Practitioner at your Surgery who should have more time and hopefully more knowledge to discuss.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use to chart progress.

Awww you poor thing, if I were you I’d tell him your info is from this site, many Drs recommend it,because they simply don’t know enough about menopause.
Your symptoms DO sound menopausal.
I had a hysterectomy ovaries left too and believe me, I KNEW I was in peri, all symptoms like yours. Ring back, ask if they have a meno savvy dr or nurse, talk about hrt,it may help you a lot. I’m not on it,so can’t really advise but someone will be along to tell you soon x

Sorry had to answer the front door!

Health anxiety can become problematic through these years.  I would be asking the surgery for an appt with a dedicated menopause clinic, as there are waiting lists. both in the NHS and private sector.

When did U last have a full blood count to include thyroid function and VitD levels?  R U aware that NHS GPs won't do the T tests if bloods are 'within normal limits', even when patients continue to complain of symptoms ; hopefully some1 will be along with more info on that but I do know that some have paid for the 'extra' tests.

You have been put into surgical menopause = no periods.  though the ovaries can pump out hormones which may cause weird symptoms!

Hi

I want to give you a big hug.  As I am too suffering from the mental aspects of peri or menopause whichever stage I am in.

Your body has been through a lot with the hip operation and I honestly dont know if there is a link with your hormones.

Something doesn't sound right though with the symptoms you are describing. Your Gp sounds awful not understanding at all and you are clearly feeling these symptoms and it is affecting your life.

I would defo speak to another GP and sooner rather than later with how you are feeling.

It sounds like its the mental health side that is affecting you the worst?. I am on HRT and also anti ds, fluoxetine as the HRT doesn't appear to be helping my mental health. The crippling anxiety  :'(

Sorry I can't offer more help or advice but I know how draining the mental heath side can be.

Apologies if this dosnent work ive not quoted before,
My op i only had sedation and spinal block, I just know i absolutely didnt have these symptoms before the operation, the wound site is a bit sore at times but its expected only 10 weeks on, I just felt absolutely wretched for a few weeks after and now it just comes in dips and waves, its really not pleasant at all and I just feel on the verge of panic all the time, I feel a full blood panel is needed as possibly lacking something, deficient in something or menopause symptoms are ramping up.i dont even know where my hormones are menopause wise, I need to get a hold of a kinder dr to listen to me.
Thankyou so much for replying

How were your moods and anxiety during your menstruating years?  This mayB your ovaries kicking off as they drop naturally.  Awful symptoms for some ladies!

I have successfully used Bachs rescue remedy mouth spray and my GP has prescribed Propranolol which has eased my anxiety surges.  Also Valium as necessary has been a Life Saver though many GPs won't prescribe, worrying about addiction possibilities.  Better that than being continually anxious?

Is the anxiety worse at any particular time of day?  The early hours are bad for me, feeling better by evening: I'm a different person then and know not to say 'yes' to anything as by monring the anxiety will be back.

My periods couldnt of been better, honestly had bo problems, nice and light and came when they was meant yo, then I got sterilised 2014 and that started everything for me, I had periods so heavy I thought i was bleeding out, I had fibroids cysts and ademyosis, and spent 3 years being gaslit and fobbed off by gynaecology until I got an nternal scan and put straight on urgent list for hysterectomy, I have never taken medication abd was hoping not to have to but cant live like this! Honestly its hard being a woman's! Ive gave myself a pounding headache crying this morning lol

Surgery can have a major destabilising effect both physically and mentally.

It is not uncommon for it to be the straw that breaks the camels back, unmasking problems that were possibly simmering in the background and may otherwise have gone unnoticed at least for now.

Perimenopause creeps up insidiously in many cases however others like you find themselves plunged into symptoms following a seemingly unrelated illness or stressor.

I would definitely recommend seeing a menopause specialist if you can afford to do so. At 48, and having a hysterectomy can hasten the onset of menopause even when both ovaries are conserved, you will be perimenopausal.

Whilst hormone therapy may not be the entire answer to everything you are experiencing, it is certainly a good place to begin, and sensible in terms of your future health.

Fortunately now there are also plenty of companies offering reliable direct to consumer blood testing - I personally use medichecks and forthwithlife - for anything you can't get on the NHS.

I would recommend getting a venous blood test done (many pharmacies offer this) for any tests you choose to have, rather than a finger prick, which often results in a great deal of frustration, a black and blue finger and an unreliable result.

It's The Change - does what it says on the tin.  Many of us thought that menopause was the end of periods and a few flushes!  For many this may be the case, however add daily life as well as a huge operation: do not underestimate how big hysterectomy actually is : the body may well go into shock.

Is it possible to change your GP Surgery?

Yes I feel like the operation triggered something in me and I just no everyday my mental wellbeing was getting worse and it had nothing to do with the hip replacement, that was obviously major surgery but I feel the symptoms ive been having are more centered towards hormones, all i know os i feel absolutely awful and need to get speaker with a different dr to work out what's going on! Thanks for reply

Yes its certainly not a walk in the park any part of menopause, mentally and physically draining, and having to carry on with normal everyday life whilst feeling like this is testament to how strong we women are,
I actually like my surgery despite the dr i spoke to, who i havent ever met, its so hard getting an appointment and you basically get who your given sadly, and thats if you get threw for a callback and then an actual face to face appointment.
