Hello ladies, I hope you are all really well :)

I’m currently sitting at home after a day patient hospital appointment for a hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy, Mirena coil insertion, and polypectomy (that didn’t quite turn into a polypectomy as there wasn’t actually a polyp there apparently…)

Feeling good so far, apart from some minor anxieties about the pathology results from the biopsy (understandable), but I’ve already had a very encouraging discharge letter back from my gynae. However, I’m now looking to our community of wise women for their thoughts on the Mirena coil and its effectiveness in keeping endometrial thickness in check when on estrogen hormone therapy. The reason I’m asking this question is as follows…

Last week I discovered via a follow-up blood test that my estrogen levels are probably still pretty low (caveat - I know bloods are unreliable for ascertaining estrogen levels so I’m not placing too much weight on that). But, I have definitely been experiencing some significant peri symptoms still even on my 3mg Sandrena dose, so know I probably would benefit from an increase in my estrogen dose.

I will be speaking to my meno GP shortly to discuss this and I’m pretty sure she’ll be insisting an increase in dose is important for my peri symptom management and future health. However, as a recent ultrasound showed my endometrial lining to be at the top end of ‘normal’ at 4.2mm thickness, I’m a little anxious about increasing my estrogen dose, as I don’t want that to result in additional thickening.

So, my question ladies, in your experience, has the Mirena (and similar) coils provided better endometrial health management than oral progesterone?

A quick search of the literature demonstrates it’s a pretty effective treatment for endometrial hyperplasia (which thankfully I don’t have at this point). But it would be great to hear about your experiences of switching to Mirena/alternative coils for management of endometrial health and thickness ahead of speaking to my meno doc  :)

Thanks you so much all - I’ve really appreciated your support over the past few weeks since joining the forum as it’s been one hell of a month health/gynae/peri-wise!  :o
