My 13 week old grandson
« on: February 12, 2021, 11:54:00 PM »

Not sure if this is best place for this but an admin lady will keep me right!

On Wednesday 17th my little grandson is having an operation (GA) he has a cleft lip and palate and I’m really worried for him, his mummy+daddy and big brother. I know it’s wonderful what surgeons can do nowadays but my heart drops when I think of the tiny wee soul on that big table and in a big hospital where hugs and comfort is so limited. Please can I ask you to say a little prayer, or just spare a thought for this lovely young family? My DIL sent a beautiful photo of the 2 boys sitting in an armchair, holding hands and smiling.
We can travel to see them for the day and home again by bedtime but none of that is allowed. There are many others worse off than us, as well as the same as us but we could all do with face to face visit right now and it’s not going to happen. I can send cards instead , full of granny love and care xxx

Dear Padine, all babies are special but it sounds like this dear little one, who needs a little medical help and surgical intervention right now, is going to be extra special for you.
Try not to worry too much - as you yourself say, it’s a well established operation and the results are excellent.  Most importantly, he should then be able to feed normally, which will have been a worry up to now for your DIL and your son.
Your family will know that you are thinking of them, and they will be in my prayers, for sure.
By the time this pandemic is over, you can be back to hands on Granny duties and catch up on the cuddles.
Thinking of you all, xxx
PS Have you watched the Cormorant Strike series? I would recommend it.  Very dishy Tom Burke as the lead role (born with a cleft lip and palate, no longer discernible) xxx

It's a worry of course.  But babies are treated like dandelion fluff in these circumstances.  He won't remember the surgical intervention at this age.  Is his Mum with him or has he a dedicated Nurse?  The results are really good as this condition is more common that is realised.

Oh Padine I would worry too.  It’s awful to even think about these things ,  they are brilliant with babies though and will take great care of him in sure.  Natural to worry, that’s what us granny’s do.
My littlest granddaughter had meningitis at 8 weeks, so cannulas, lumbar puncture etc.  It’s awful, there’s no denying.  But they are so resilient and bounce back so quickly.
I hope your little grandson gets a brilliant result and that you can get to see them soon.  Being apart if so hard as you have to rely on phone calls etc .
My thoughts and prayers are with you all xx

Padine, Im retraining to be a speech and language therapist and attended a training day with the specialist cleft lip and palate team on Monday. I just wanted to say that what they do is absolutely amazing and their repairs are wonderful. Additionally, and equally as important,  their attitude is extremely caring. I am sure they will do everything to ensure the physical and emotional welfare of your grandson and his family.

Sending best wishes x

I feel for you. My grandson had a bowel obstruction at a week old over in the USA. My son and his wife rushed him to a hospital an hours journey away as they are first responders, so knew where the best place to take him was. It was one of the worst weeks of our lives and we were so far away. We worried that his early experiences would affect him in some way, but no, he is the sunniest, happy little 2 year old now. You grandson will do well. It’s just so hard to not be there isn’t it?

Thank you all for your replies xx every word means a lot (and will check out Tom Burke too, thanks x)

CLKD, mum will be with him until they both meet with the anaesthetist. We have been so impressed with CLAPA nurse and team, they are amazing. Oh Ju Ju, that must have been an awful time when your grandson had that emergency and that's such good news that he is now as well as he sounds!
One of the few good things of 2020 was this little boy's birth, and hopefully one of the good things of 2021 with be his ops and recovery!

Just to add to all the reassurances, my wee grand-daughter had tongue tie. It was missed initially, so she couldn't feed properly and this was affecting her mother's milk supply. It was a dreadful few weeks of so much stress and feelings of helplessness. Once she had the surgery, it was like the sun coming out. Had she not, there would have been failure to thrive issues or, later, problems with speech. Your wee mite has had this found early and it's going to be fixed! Let's all be pleased he will have a great quality of life after this. Be strong knowing this is the way forward.

Hello Padine

Just wanted to tell you that my eldest neice was born with a cleft pallette. She had the op at 6 months.

She is now 39 years old!, and you'd never even know she'd had anything wrong with her

Sending positive vibes your way, I'm sure all will be well :-*

Hello Padine.

I just wanted to add that many years ago at an evening class I got chatting to a doctor who treated babies with cleft lip and palate. He said that one of the reasons that the procedure was successful was because babies heal fast and the face has an excellent blood supply.  The subject came up because the teacher was telling us about the time her young daughter had been bitten on the lip by a dog but the wound healed quickly without leaving a scar.

I hope all this helps in some way and please keep us updated.

Wishing you and your family well.

He had his op today and mummy sent us photos. He is recovering really well, had some milk and dirty nappies but, and this is nearly unbelievable - he has Covid. Whole family need to self-isolate naturally, I’m praying now that mum and dad don’t get it with a 3 yr old (due back to nursery next Monday) and the wee one.
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers girls, all messages have been very comforting x
