Tailbone / sacroiliac ache and pressure
« on: February 10, 2021, 01:40:23 PM »

I'm hoping some of you lovely ladies can help!

So, back between Christmas and New Year I was in a bit of pain at my bottom, turned out it was an external pile.  I think it probably thrombosed as was really painful and OTC cream didn't work.  Managed to get prescription steroid cream/suppositories from the doc over the phone.  Have had piles before, but this was painful all the time!  Took several weeks to shrink and now I'm left with a skin tag.

However, since then I've really been struggling with a strange sensation at my bum area and pain/pressure at my tailbone when sitting (desk job) and to the right of this.  Such a deep ache and into my right buttock too.  I assumed that maybe I had internal haemorroids too, perhaps, so got an appointment with the doc.  She did a rectal exam and could see the skin tag, all good, and couldn't feel any lumps and bumps inside.  Have had to do a faecal sample for occult blood and get blood tests to see if I'm anaemic.  I was whisked in and out so fast, I didn't get a chance really to say much.  She shrugged her shoulders and said she couldn't understand my symptoms.

As someone who suffers from health anxiety, you can imagine I'm thinking all sorts!  Anyone experience anything similar?

Hi AnxiousSoul, welcome to the Forum.

It sounds like a musculoskeletal thing, as you appear to have the haemorrhoid sorted out. I would think about seeing a Women's Health Physiotherapist, as they are specialists in all kinds of stuff 'below the waist'. You can go privately or ask for an NHS referral if you have the patience to wait that long. Alternatively, an osteopath might be able to help.

 :welcomemm:

Have you ever hit your coccx?  [sp].  I injured mine when I was 13 and had to sit on a cushion for months: imagine that in School  >:(.  When constipated it still niggles and sometimes is too sore to sit for long ....... some find a ring, similar to those that kids use when swimming, will ease pressure on that area.  You mind find something suitable on line from a mobility supplier.

Take pain relief too.

Thank you for the responses.

Yes, I do wonder if it's something pelvic floor-esque.  I had two 9lb babies (one episiotomy and ventouse, the other I had a tear).  Possibly now hormones are a bit less reliable, there may be old aches resurfacing?

I haven't injured my tailbone previously.

I thought it was a bit odd she went straight to a FIT test, kinda spooked me!

AAAHhhh - crickey, that's not delivering a baby that's delivering a toddler  :o  ;)

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.

Hi, I sympathise.  I have chronic coccydynia at the moment. I've tried all cushions, physio, hot/cold but nothing helps. I'm in tears sometimes when I try to stand up. I'm waiting for a steroid injection but thsts all been put on hold, I've been urgent on the list since end of November,  I'm seeing a different consultant next week at a different hospital,  so fingers crossed he can help. I hope you get it sorted soon.  I would be speaking to a different gp.

Have you raised your cushion Penguin99 in the chair which you use regularly so that you don't pull those muscles over the coyxx area?

I've tried it all clkd, nothing helps. I've tried to cushions. I'm just in soooo much pain but I have to wait ( I know there are others in worse situations than me) but everyone has their own pain. I'm hoping this other consultant next week can do something.

Don't think about others.  We each deal with pain differently.  Did U sleep?

Hi there

I have injured my coccyx twice and it is just awful - no comfortable way to sit at all. My pain eventually went after I was prescribed a tiny dose of meds to block to nerve signals. It was a child’s dose of antidepressant which I took for about 6 weeks and the pain was cured. I was shocked at the idea but it was explained that it would help to break the pain cycle and allow my body to become less sensitive to that area. It worked brilliantly!

Everyone is different and it may not work for you but I was enormously grateful.

I used to get pain in my coccyx when standing up after sitting on a hard surface or sitting for a long time. But it seems to have gone (for the moment anyway). Not sure why, but l have been taking turmeric tablets and l wonder if that has helped.

I hope your pain has improved, I understand totally what you're going through.
I had my injection 5 weeks ago,  still very uncomfortable,  slightly better  when I stand up, but it hasn't worked for me and I haven't got the result I'd desperately hoped for. They did say they will inject again if it didn't work, I'm seeing the consultant at the end of the month so hopefully he can sort me out. I'm not going to lie, it was incredibly painful having the injection but I would absolutely have it again. I'm going to ask him about manipulation with the next injection, this was mentioned by the other consultant,  so will see what he says. I've started writing bits down so I don't forget things. I'm still using my cushion.
Best wishes

I’ve just seen a chiropractor for this very thing this morning. Been in pain for a week, can’t sit, bend or tilt my hips without total agony.
He did things to me that made me shout, I’m now sat with an ice pack on it as instructed then I need to walk and keep moving.
I seriously hope this improves it and I feel for you if you have had this for a while, it’s hideous!
