Back to the dentist, pain less acute but constant nagging causing me to feel rough and affecting sleep. Prescribed 3rd set of antibi's , hopefully this finishes the infection off. Only another 12 days until the second root canal seesion!

I am in a lot of pain, thanks for asking. I really thought there was something seriously wrong with me in the night. The pain was acute and radiated up to my temple. Was really scared but not so bad when I got up. I'm going to ring the dentist yet again tomorrow and if I don't get anywhere am going to see if I can make an appointment somewhere else, can't go on like this.

I really think this needs sorting out. When OH was young and foolish he had an abscess and didn't go to a dentist until he nearly passed out from the pain. Dentist pointed out how stupid he'd been and said if it's in the upper jaw the puss can travel up and into the brain. Granted it might have had trouble finding any brain cells but it's dangerous if it does.

So I went to see the specialist root canal dentist today. I was in there 1hr 20 minutes and he was very thorough. However, he could not come up with a definitatve answer. The xrays didn't show anything obvious. After all the tests he said he thought it was most likely the tooth next to the one that had been root canalled. It could have a crack but its not showing up. He said that the root canal tooth could possibily have a 4th root that was missed but he thinks thats unlikely to cause this level of pain. He also suggested there could possibily be a sinus issue. Finally, he said it was  possibile that it was trigeminal neuralgia but he thought it was the least likely possibility as I have no trigger points, but it could be a non typical presentation. Anyway no answers. He's sending me to get a cone scan which may or may not provide more information and he recommeded I get in touch with the doctor and try amatryptilin whilst investigations are ongoing.

You're a mystery!  When will you get the amytriptaline, being it's the weekend?  It's an anti-epileptic drug which supposedly eases spasms.

That’s good to be seen before the weekend. Amitriptyline works like a dream for a friend of ours (who incidentally went through the same scenario which you’ve been through, and I did too).I had amitriptyline to ease my Degenerative disc disease/spinal problems and poor sleep, worked very well. It’s all being attended to now Shropshirelass which is as much as you can do. Take care and be kind to yourself especially right now.

I feel your pain, as i quoted before I had a similar experience that went of for a year. Even after the tooth had been taken out....it could be TMJ or bruxism that is causing the pain. Look them both up. I am now getting treatment for both and the jaw pain is less. It took 3 different dentists to find out what was causing the pain. Like you nothing showed up on x rays. good luck hun x

Im really struggling with the pain, thanks for asking. Still waiting to hear about my CT scan. Rang the dentist today and apparently the referral hasn't even been sent yet. I have a telephone drs appointment tomorrow so maybe they will be able to suggest something.

Hello Dear SL (my headache "buddy")

You have my complete sympathy, dental pain is the worst thing. I suffered for several years with intermittent abscesses due to a grumbly old root canal treatment. When my original dentist completed it, he said it'll probably last you 10-15 years. Well I made it to 20 or thereabouts. A couple of times a year it would niggle me and each time the dentist would say it was probably going to need extracting but through fear I kept putting it off.  I saw a specialist who advised I would probably need an apicoectomy (where they slice the gum open to get to the nerve) but the £600+ price tag put me off at the time because I couldn't afford it, especially when they could not guarantee it would even work and not need extracting anyway.

I ended up having it removed after a really nasty infection and to be honest it was a doddle and a relief to see the blimmin back of it!

One thing they did suggest when I needed pain relief was soluble aspirin (strangely enough it works really well on my headaches as well) and to hold the dissolved solution in my mouth swilling it around the tooth for a bit before swallowing as normal. With an abscess they also said it was likely to throb more if I was laying flat, so the little sleep I got I was propped up a bit in bed. I always felt better cupping my hand round the sore side, so maybe the gentlest of heat? Have you got a microwaveable/wheat pad or anything similar you can just hold against your jaw?

Really hope you start feeling better soon x

That is disgusting that the referral hasn't been sent, after all we have e-mail  >:(.  Or pick up the 'phone and discuss?

Do you know who you are being referred to, mayB ring directly and explain how much pain you are in? Tell them you are now suicidal due to lack of sleep and constant pain.

Still waitinmg, no I don't know who the referral is to so Im pretty powerless and feeling quite pathetic in any case CKLD.

Hi Mogster, thanks. I'll try the aspirin. I did try it for my headaches but it didn't help. How are your headaches? My headaches are much improved. Going on to a conti regime has made a real difference and I still do my neck exercises every day in case that helps.
