Hearing loss
« on: December 08, 2020, 11:23:25 PM »

I did a search as I'm sure we have threads about being luggy  ;D but the search facility didn't kick in.  :(

I have difficulty with my hearing.  Wax was removed about 12 month's ago.  DH tells me that I'm misinterpreting info. from the TV and not hearing all he says.  However he has in recent weeks made statements then denied them  >:( or "You didn't hear me correctly".

NHS web-site ain't much good stating that a patient may be advised to go elsewhere as an appt. may be quicker.  Well if all patients are being sent elsewhere, logic suggests that there won't be much of an NHS Waiting List !

I looked on the Boots web-site and the cost of aids is outrageous when this is something that the NHS should provide?

Any one deaf ?

Hi there.
Yup, I'm very hard of hearing Rt sided and some Lt sided needs too.
I wear an NHS hearing aid when needed although often I prefer the peace. Can't hear the door bell or the phone ring but my dawgs tell me when someone is at the door.
Watching TV I use subtitles all the time... Its ok, I've had a hearing aid for 5 years and I am now 57 but had issues since I was about 50.

You can get an NHS hearing test and NHS hearing aids. I don't know how much better the private one are. I think it depends on your area but here you can get a test in some opticians. Specsavers does them, others available.

Tnx.  I did look at the boots website and the aids that they sell are very expensive  :o

I'll speak to the GP in the New Year.

Perhaps if you asked Father Christmas nicely he could arrange something helpful  ;)

Tnx.  We both had wax removed about 14 months ago.  In the New Year I'll have a chat with our Nurse again.

My father lives with us and is very deaf (90), every 3 months I do his ears, 10 days of olive oil, then use the kit I got from boots to self syringe his ears. I’m amazed how much wax floats out.
It really could just be that CLKD.
Go surgeries won’t do ears at the moment as too invasive with COVID

I was convinced I was going deaf in my left ear. Mentioned this to new GP who had a look "IT'S FULL OF WAX" was the appalled bellowing. Arrange a syringing appointment and use ear drops between now and then was the next, quieter comment. Did so and now all is reasonable ish BUT ideally it needs doing every 5 years or so - Our GP surgery  stopped offering syringing approx 2 years prior to covid.

You are very lucky CLKD if your surgery nurse will do anything to do with ears now.

Small surgery?

Pre COVID they stopped syringing in this area and many others as considered invasive and not necessary. It was done by vibration technique

Gosh CLKD you are blessed. Is the ear syringing service still being offered now under the Covid restrictions. When did you last enquire about it?
