I've had it on and off over the years, but could never find anything that helped. There are, apparently,  exercises that you can do, but for me it was just time. Hope it doesn't last too long for you; it's not pleasant l know.

When did you last see your Dentist?  Maybe send an e-mail to your surgery to see if the dentist has any exercise suggestions?

Do you clench your teeth at night?

Hi feather

I just asked my partner, who is a dentist, and he said:

Depends what the problem is... but the most important thing is to avoid wide Opening, yawning etc.  There are excercises, but after that it’s to wear a night guard. Application of heat over the area and antii-inflammatories can help.  After that it’s a specialist referral.

I can try to explain the excercises if you want, but ideally your dentist or doc should show you

Thanks for the replies- I went to the dentist yesterday and it’s not dental related- I do think I grind my teeth- but there was no sign of wear on them so can’t be too bad. I’ve heard about exercises but not sure if you should do them while you’ve got the pain- in case it makes it worse!

I clech my jaw at night, especially when stressed and its causing a lot of problems. A guard  protects the teeth but not necessarily the jaw as you're still clenching. I'm suffering now with tinintis, inflamed ear cartilage, inner ear fluid and neck pain, apparently  all TMJ symtoms.
My doctor thinks my ear could be damage from  Covid in April (covid long tail) as my main symtoms were in my throat, nose and sinuses, loss of taste and smell for nearly a month. IWaiting for an ENT appointment.
I haven't wear on my teeth, Feather, but i have cracked a tooth before, i just clench them together and its sheer pressure on the jaw. I wake up some mornings and around my ear and side of my jaw can feel numb.
Relaxation and learning to cope with stress is probably the best cure, easier said than done in these times.
If you get any relief with the exercises let me know and how to execise your jaw.

Hi Feather, I started with the pain you describe predominantly in (R) side jaw and constant headache (but different from normal headaches/migraines I suffer it felt like a sinus headache) given diazepam for night short course and went to dentist got a mouth guard. I don't use it every night, usually every third night and it has helped enormously, don't take any pain relief etc for it and pain has resolved over time. x

Sorry to hear you’ve had such a tough time Clio51! For me the pain has subsided  somewhat, bizarrely I wake up about 3am every morning with pain, but it goes away with massage and paracetamol. I do believe this is due to stress- my job is stressful at the moment plus we had a burglary at home . Waiting for an appointment with maxillofacial consultant. Thanks for the suggestion of the heat pad- I’ll have a look on Amazon!

2months on from my original post and I’m much better- been referred to a specialist but obviously it’ll be a while before I get an appointment . I did have a  sudden and serious resurgence of the pain about a month ago- so went back to gp who changed the painkillers I was given- should have had anti-inflamatories- not codeine! Since getting the right thing the condition has got progressively better. Still don’t know the cause but trying exercises to prevent again

 :thankyou:  4 the update.

Most UK dentists should be working now.  Risk assessments etc. done, PPE in place, windows wide open  :o ........
