Agnus castus - vitex
« on: February 06, 2022, 01:01:15 PM »

Anyone had any joy with this???

I'm 45, peri.

I'm now 4 years of horrific symptoms, but just prior to their onset I took agnus castus. I now blame it, or my abrupt stop for my current symptoms.

However, I'm now wondering if I should relook at using it. Nothing has worked for me over the last 4 years. But agnus castus worked amazingly for me for 3 months before that. I now believe I was on a very high dose and I ended up with daily excruciating migraines - so stopped abruptly. I have tried twice over the last 4 years to get back on it, but never feel better and have given up quickly.

When I first took it I had stopped the mini pill and was suffering from tremendous pmt and brain fog. Over the 3 months it took all that away and gave me a libido I have never experienced in my life (hence me so sure it was doing something to me) !! But then came the migraines.

I'm now trying progesterone cream - hoping for same results. No joy yet.

Does anyone have any scietific knowledge of agnus castus??? How it works (I read it increases prog, but it's also a phytoestrogen, so very confusing). Like I say, I can't help feeling I totally unbalanced when I stopped it abruptly.

Hi ChrispyChick,

I used to take this during peri and found it very helpful.  I Also took Black Cohosh, but not at the same time, which was  good to.

Both products I bought from Healthspan.  If you check their website each item gives full ingredients, plus the necessary patient information leaflets, which you can download.  These give details of possible side effects etc.,

Hope that helps.

Thank you Aprilflower.

What made you stop the agnus castus??

I can see the one you took is the 4mg standardised from around 50mg. It is very difficult to understand the dosing. I was taking 800mg of the dried fruit. A herbalist did tell me this was a very high dose though.  ;D

I did try 4mg standardised one last year and also 400mg of my previous one... Never got past 2 weeks. However, feeling how I am at the moment, I'm pretty sure it was having no impact, rather than causing my symptoms, so it may be something I retry.

Hi,

Basically my symptoms improved once I had my last period. Most of my problems were in peri but I appreciate that for others it's more posts meno.

Hi CrispyChick
I’ve been looking into agnus castus a bit and thought you might like this article.

https://labs.selfdecode.com/blog/prolactin-blood-test/

Agnus castus is used to lower prolactin levels in women as can zinc, vitamin e and ashwaghandha.

Women also use it for PMS for two weeks, before and during their period. Apparently you should not take it continuously.

I’m not at all sure though how taking progesterone continuously effects prolactin levels?!

Melatonin can also lower prolactin levels.

Prolactin levels effect the quality of rem sleep. This is something I’m planning to ask my specialist about at my next appointment as she was most insistent that I use low dose melatonin even though I wake after 5/6 hours as she said overtime the melatonin will help balance (I don’t like that word as it’s so unspecific!) my prolactin levels.

Never had mine tested but thinking of doing so.

Lovely day! xx
