Phytosoya and Other Naturals

Many years ago I visited our Health Food shop enquiring after natural supplements/foods to help with all things MP. At the time we were on a low income and the £30 per month which the recommended supplements ie phytosoya and other naturals cost was prohibitive for me. I think I managed 1 month's supply!

Now my GP has suggested I try this Clonidine to help reduce the flushes I am thinking of returning to our Health shop to discuss this once again. We are in a healthier position 20 years on to be able to afford products which work and have none or limited side effects.

Reading thru some of the ex. posts here has got me thinking of adding more super foods to my diet ie avocados/blue berries and sweet potatoes. Our vegetarian son is a mine of information on what is good for you without compromising your favourite foods!

Have any of the members successfully used Soya in any form for any MP issues and if so which ones pls?

Hi Sadie - I haven't been on here for a while so this is a late post in terms of an answer for you but I hope it helps.

I was taking Holland and Barratt's Menopause Mood tablets which are St John's Wort and Black Cohosh (I am perimenopausal).  I was on them for about 8 months, and my instances of flushes and other symptoms were lessening.  I noticed my emotional hormones were all over the place so I reviewed my diet and supplemented with Magnesium which made things much calmer for me.  However, I also decided to give myself a break from the H&B pills to see if I could reset my hormones.  This is where I have to tell you that I did a medical herbalism course in the meantime to support how I treat myself...  Herbs can be taken long term but sometimes it is a good idea to give your body a break and see if it settles naturally. 

Unfortunately while my emotional state is better, my flushes have come back with vengeance and I am having real gastric issues.  So I investigated further and learnt that estrogen supports good stomach acid (mine is low and causing issues), and also calms down cortisol the stress hormone.

So for me, the magnesium is helping my emotional brain chemicals, but the lack of estrogen from the black cohosh is causing me other issues.  I am now back on the H&B tablets and doubt I will come off until I reach menopause.

To treat yourself naturally you can opt for herbs (Black Cohosh or Red Clover - which I also drink as tea), and also eat foods that stimulate or mimic estrogen, such as soya (tofu or just soya milk) and oats.

You don't have to spend a fortune and you do have to be really careful if you take any prescribed medication so absolutely take advice, although if you are interested in going herbal and funds aren't an issue you may want to get a consultation with a qualified herbalist first.

I have started taking Femarelle capsules and I've been tolerating them well and enjoying some positive outcomes.
I generally can't tolerate "menopausal" supplements (and I have issues with many other supplements/medications) so I'm pleased that so far, I'm finding these easy to take every day!
I believe this supplement has been around for quite a long time in Europe but it's now available in America? Anyway, hope this helps.

Interesting to hear that you use Femarelle, solidgrounds.  I also take it but know nobody else who uses it! 

I had been on HRT for 6 years and my GP wasn't keen on me continuing it without seeing a Specialist which was difficult because of Lockdown.  A Menopause Consultant had previously responded to my query about alternative therapies by saying Femarelle was the only supplement that had studies backing it so I decided to give it a go.  I have now been taking it since September when I stopped my HRT.  For anyone interested in the science of it - the one I take ("Femarelle Recharge") contains DT56a which is fermented soy extract, ground flaxseed and vit b6.  I did promise Hurdity ages ago to let you know how I get on with it so here goes: 

I do think it is a fairly good alternative to HRT and will be continuing to use it.  But it does not 100% eliminate hot flushes.  On Femarelle, I get an average of 1-2 hot flushes per day.  I keep a note in my diary.  When I say 1-2 per day, I mean that is how it averages out.  So on some days I might get no flushes whatsoever and on other stressful days, I might get 3-4.  But what is remarkable is that I have stopped having night sweats/flushes altogether.  So I get a better night of sleep.  Another thing I have noticed is that it seems to help with vaginal dryness and dry eyes.  My mood is more even than it was on HRT.  It's a SERM (selective oestrogen reuptake modulator) which means people who have had breast cancer can have it.  Oh and it helps with bone density which for me is a big concern.   

I'm not saying it's a miracle cure.  The negatives points are that it is expensive.  It's annoying to have to remember to take two tablets per day, one morning and one night.  It doesn't 100% eliminate hot flushes.  I have to order mine online which is irritating.  So it's by no means perfect and some people will simply be priced out of buying it.  I'm sure it won't work for everyone.   

So my advice would be stick with HRT if you find a kind that totally suits you and you can get your prescriptions without having to argue with your GP about it.  However, If HRT is contraindicated for you or doesn't suit you then I think that Femarelle is a worthwhile alternative to consider trying.  If you ever do decide to give it a go - you really do have to wait for up to 12 weeks before you know where you are with it.  I almost gave up on it when quite suddenly - around the 10th or 11th week of taking it, my symptoms improved.  So you need to be patient.

Interesting to hear about your use of Femarelle! I don’t take it all the time but as an additional supplement. However, I’m just wondering whether to reorder these capsules or not but I do wish it cost less than it does!
I’m glad I don’t have any side-effects with Femarelle Recharge as I so often seem to do, including lots od water-retention (I seem to be predisposed to this which is very frustrating!).
Anyway, interesting that we don’t know anyone else who is taking this supplement. All the best :)
