Did anyone see the the item of news about the grey squirrel? Some 10 year old kids were found poking it with sticks and kicking it until this man stopped them,he said their parents were all there too  :-\ it beggars belief of what children so young are capable of this these days, anyway,he took it to a nearby animal sanctuary but apparently by law they had to euthanise it as it's illegal to rehabilitate invasive animals, muntjac are also euthanised   :'(

Actually: grey squirrels can be set free with a Licence from DEFRA - go figure.  Best to put them to sleep as they kill our red squirrels  :'(.  Tiggy Winkles had a Licence for several years as do most Vets..

I've been watching yellow wagtails following lambs ......... for small flies!

The only way you can get a DEFRA licence granted is if the squirrel is already a companion animal. Licences held by wildlife rescues and vets have all been revoked.

Yes,Taz that's what the article said,so sad for these rescue centres, must be difficult for them when their purpose is to help the creature

Not a fan of grey squirrels but cruelty is is not acceptable.

However, can't blame the children it's how they have been brought up.  Full blame on the parents.

I'm glad that the Licence has been revoked.  They are not welcome here.  Grey squirrels carry pox which our Native reds can't fight.  They also travel more widely, whereas Reds require corridors of woodland in which to stay safe and breed.  I wonder how many Reds are in the section of Ancient woodland which has been grubbed out for HS2  :'(

I don't know how far back in History one goes but not many critters in the UK are actually Native including deer.

There are many reasons why the red squirrel population has declined. It's sad that I can no longer rescue the greys. Also the muntjac. I'm not sure how far back you have to go to call something native. Everything (including us) came from somewhere originally.

I think until the damage by incomers was realised.  Probably.

Muntjac escaped from Woburn Abbey Park in the 1960s.  Greys - rats with tails ;-).  Deer cause many human fatalities across the UK annually  :'(.

Not many critters evolved to understand vehicle movements  :-\

Like shady says though, still no need for cruelty to a squirrel,at the end of the day,it's not it's fault it's here,we humans are the ones who mess things up  :'(
