Made a hedgehog jump a few moments ago, I went to feed them and it was earlier than me!  It scuttled under some pot plants ..... it will be back.

The gold finches have been on the nyger and sunflower heart feeders today, back and front gardens.  I counted 18 on the phone wires above the house and 3 more on the feeders ...... then the neighbours' cat arrived  ::)

I love hedgehogs.

I saw a fox the other night on our neighbours front lawn (she put lots of bread out for birds). Hadn't  seen one for a couple of years, he was a biggun but scarpered as soon as he saw me twitch the curtain....grrr...

I have lots of ladybirds on the upstairs windows, they are trying to find somewhere to get in and find a place to stay warm over the winter. I didn't notice many around in the summer but have lots now.

It's across the UK - ladybirds everywhere.  I had lots in the window frames last weekend, well they are outside now  ::) .......... still plenty of aphids on the roses ;-)

Hedgehogs were here almost as soon as I put food out, I think they wait in the shrubbery  ;D.  Pond fish feeding well every day.

1 of the small hedgehogs is now waiting outside our back door for meal worms at dusk :-).  It does scuttle away if I make any noise though  ::)

Is there any way you could check the weight of the little hog? If he's small he will need to be overwintered at a rescue centre as he won't survive the winter. They need to weigh around 600 grams.

I could put a fishing net over it .......... if it is still around in the really cold weather we will weigh it.  We can see he/she is gaining weight by the week.

Not sure a fishing net is a good idea as the spines easily get tangled in nets. All you need to do is put a small towel over it and scoop it up. It will immediately curl up. If it's under 600 grams it won't have enough time now to put weight on before the weather turns colder and the food supply dwindles. It won't be heavy enough to have put down the brown fat needed to survive hibernation.  Do you have a local rescue?

Several Taz.   There were 3 here again last night: one large, a medium and 'small' as we call him/her.  I will find a tea-towel and get the scales to hand.  What I don't want to do is frighten it as we are a regular source of live meal worms and fresh water  ;)

We have the camera set on one of the hedgehog huts but nil of note to report.  We know which way they come into and go out of our garden under the fence ........ and I don't think that at night they are far away as once I have put food out, 1/several are there within about 10 mins..

You won't frighten it away. They are ruled by their tummies  ;D

We have discussed and will be keeping a watch and wait regime.  If 'small' continues to be here when the weather turns really cold for days at a time we will re-consider.  There are several places to get advice locally.

Why wait? I don't understand what's to be gained by that? I know you love your hedgies so why risk them coming to harm?  :-\

I couldn't agree more Taz - What is there to re-consider CLKD?  ???

You have had good advice from Taz, we know she knows a lot about hedgehogs & she has made a very wise & sensible suggestion.

Why risk the "small" ones life....sorry but I just don't understand you.  ???
